Early Charles
kellielulu31 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think it's keeping in character of Charles Winchester early on. He still had more range than Frank did who had a few character traits they emphasized without much depth. Charles is shown to be more formidable than Frank but he's all about himself in the early episodes. That however starts to change before the end of the season . He's more than two or three things and we see that over time.

Hawkeye meanwhile fulfills a promise to a patient and Father Mulcahy gets a surge of confidence by a plea he makes over the intercom.

Meanwhile Klinger is planning to get out of the Korean War by getting into West Point! Potter and BJ give him the exam .

A Matter of Exchange with Change
Hitchcoc29 March 2015
When the Army decides that an exchange of scrip must take place, Charles realizes that the locals have lots of Army cash. He decides on an enterprise of his own. To pay them 10 cents on the dollar and then "legally" exchange the scrip. He makes 90 percent. Meanwhile, an MP who has been saved by Hawkeye trusts him with 400 dollars and during a fight, the money is stolen. The boy put a plan in action to not allow Charles back into camp with his filthy lucre. Anothe interesting event involves Klinger trying to take a test to get into West Point (joining the Army to get out of the Army). It's a fun adventure. Klinger, instead of answering questions, rails on the insanity of how the characters in the questions act.

Winchester tosses red script
foxazon3 September 2017
Spotted Winchester is handed red script from Hawkeye. Then the scene with Hawkeye. Afterward throws red script away like it's worthless. At this point blue is worthless. He also smashes box with greenbacks. I don't see this blooper anywhere. I agree this episode seems mean. The Koreans should have been reimbursed.

Old Frank Burns script?
shelaghc6 July 2009
Most of Winchester's dialogue and actions smack of Frank Burns.

In particular the comment about the local Koreans learning proper English was quick obviously the kind of thing Burns would say.

Additionally, the unabashed crassness of Winchester's attitude are more than a little out of character but very much in keeping with Frank Burns.

After seeing the recent airing in syndication, and knowing this episode was filmed just a few months after the departure of Frank Burns, I'd say it's a better than even chance the script was originally written before Larry Linville decided to leave the series and a few adjustments were made so they could still use it.

Winchester
sprynx7 February 2015
I could see why some would think that this could have been a storyline stockpiled for Burns but at the same time I believe these antics generally fit the early Winchester character. He was after all the

new antagonist of the series in spite of the writing of the show gradually changing so that everyone was more dimensional and shown in shades of gray. Winchester did have a condescending attitude towards Korean peasants and he did hold money in a much higher regard than the other characters so I would say that this early Winchester episode fit the bill. Not to mention the fact that he was still bitter of being transferred to the unit and basically didn't care much for being liked by the others. As the seasons progressed I would definitely agree that this would be out of character for Winchester.

Peter Riegert makes his second (and final) appearance as Igor
safenoe28 September 2020
It's currency exchange day at the 4077th, with blue notes being exchanged for red. Hilarity and just desserts ensue with Winchester being hoisted by his own petard big time.

Peter Riegert makes his second (and final) appearance as Igor. It was also before Peter made it big in Animal House. Jeff Maxwell returns as Igor in the next season.
