A Very Dangerous Friend
Hitchcoc4 May 2015
This recycled plot has a man way past his prime who has the rank to order young soldiers into battle when they had no business being there. The soldiers know what is going on but don't feel they have any power. This man is a decades long friend of Potter and while the old guy knows he has to do something about it. He starts off defensively but soon comes to his senses, though he is inflicting pain. In another plot, the classical music Charles plays is driving B.J. crazy. He is stuck in the Swamp with a sore foot and can't escape the works of Mahler. Some interesting things develop along the way, with Margaret a part of it. B.J., who often comes off as a master manipulator, sets things up to his advantage, but makes a bit of a mistake.

Jamie Farr moves up, Roy Goldman appears
safenoe17 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is Jamie Farr's directorial debut and it's a shame he didn't direct more episodes of this fine series.

Roy Goldman has a brief speaking part. I mention this because his son was a very engaging guest on the M*A*S*H Matters podcast. We learn lots about Roy, and his shyness as an actor, which explains why he doesn't have many lines in the series.

Better served as an episode early in the series

Warning: Spoilers
After years of working and carousing together, one would expect that the characters have learned to not only tolerate each other's differences, but to resolve them without bickering or conflict. Yet, here they are squawking...for the umpteenth time.

I would understand if BJ merely offered a half hearted groan to Winchester, but his loud, angry outburst at his music was old and stale. Same for Margaret. I was never a fan of her god-awful shrieking and over-the-top name-calling at her fellow officers' expense, but come on, man. This was 1983.

Potter immediately offers a loud, angry retort towards Hawkeye's concerns about his careless friend. Not only is it refried beans, but his anger sounds oddly out of character.

A lot of old, meaningless anger and bickering in this episode. For all the great episodes they created, they created just as many stinkers. This is one of those.
