Who Are the Heroes, Anyway?
Hitchcoc28 April 2015
A former heavyweight champion is visiting the 4077 on a publicity tour. As he travels he has an entourage. He is an edgy, self-centered man, but he does take time to talk to the kids recovering in the hospital. While he is being honored, he suffers a fatal stroke. As he lies in a coma with no chance of recovery, the press moves in on Hawkeye because he is the surgeon of record. These media jackals (thank you Governor Ventura) make it really hard to do the real work of the MASH unit. BJ and Charles start to get jealous over all the attention Pierce is getting from the press. There is an especially touching moment with Father Mulcahy and the Champ before he dies. There is also a remarkable use of a makeshift defibrillator by B.J. which has interesting implications.

The nature of fame
safenoe6 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
One underlying theme of this episode is what constitutes fame and the link to sporting stars. In many ways this episode was far ahead of its time in the way sporting stars are worshipped and how this rubs off on those who treat them. Here BJ and Winchester team up in their jealousy of Hawkeye as he becomes a media star, many years before Instagram and Youtube.

Celebrity
ygwerin120 September 2023
M. A. S. H. 4077 receives the accolade, of hearing that a real life celebrity is due, to breeze into their 'Little Town', non other than one 'Gentleman Joe' Cavanagh.

His visit is part of what transpires is a veritable, media circus as an integral Celebrity Tour, of the entire Korean Police Conflict zone.

The downsize has an up of a Colonel Wilberforce Memo, a U. S. Army Aladdin's lamp to get the, best possible grub for the 'Champ'.

'Champ Cavanagh's' impending arrival brings with it the Media Circus, with more reporters in train, than that covering the entire Peace Talks.

However much the entire 4077 medical team, endeavour to continue with any semblance of normality, Cavanagh's celebrity status overwhelms it, especially when he succumbs to a serious illness.

The media ensemble ever keen to seek 'Celebrity' causes bruised egos amongst the key surgical staff, they show their true nature and real purpose in being there at all, by deliberately ignoring a potential medical breakthrough, on the grounds of it not being sufficiently 'News worthy'
