Leland remains free... Ben doesn't
Tweekums20 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After Maddy's murder at the end of the last episode it looked as though Leland would soon be behind bars however as this episode opens he is still free and explains to Donna and James that she headed home earlier in the day. This leaves Ben Horne as the prime suspect in Laura's murder and with his brother acting as his lawyer his chances of proving his innocence seems slim... after all as far as he knows his alibi is dead. He later learns that Catherine Martell isn't dead when her husband comes in with an offer to help... for a very large price. Away from the case Norma's mother turns up with her new husband; a man who would rather she didn't know he'd been to prison; no doubt Hank's silence will have a price.

While not as exciting as the previous episode this was still quality entertainment; Ray Wise does a great job as the increasingly mad Leland Palmer; his dancing in the Great Northern is just surreal. It was a pleasant surprise that his character remains free to keep that storyline going a bit longer. As always there was plenty of humour; the highlights being when Cooper listed all the reasons why Jerry Horne wasn't the sort of lawyer you'd want representing you and the arrival in town of Lucy's sister Gwen who acts just like her.

The Dancing Master

After an episode that could never be topped, we have some amazing things going on. Ray Wise as Leland Palmer is stunning. First of all, he is out on bail after admitting to the murder of Jacques. Truman and Cooper seem to love the guy and have given him an awful lot of rope. Meanwhile Ben Home resides in jail, based on his connection to One Eyed Jack. It's interesting with all the interest in Laura Palmer that there are numerous other things that could lead to prison: e.g. the kidnapping and drugging of Audrey. We also have some big realizations taking place when the chubby Japanese guy is revealed. We have the continuing saga of Leo, who is in a vegetative state (or is he?). And poor Shelley! She does deserve more, but she is being capsized in some sort of Devil's agreement. Norma's mother shows up with a new husband, but at the end we find out that there is something untoward going on. I don't know where to even start, so I will sit back and enjoy.

Warning: Spoilers
Well here we go again. That was a brilliant ending which once again shows that this stupid soundtrack has come full circle, because it actually went really well with it despite it not being humorous in the slightest. The ending was very dark in fact, and it looks like this is the show's reset as it were. The job now is a to somehow do that reset without just repeating everything until now. BOB, who I'm assuming is now permanently Leland and has been since his hair went white, is an exceedingly creepy character and evidently very precise and careful with how he deals with the crime scene and whatnot. Mike is equally unsettling, and I hope we see more of him. It's looking more and more like he's gonna somehow get away and go hunting for BOB. I suppose I should take this opportunity to say, because I haven't for a while, that the camerawork and cinematography continue to be terrific, which is down to lighting, framing, everything. Everything is carefully planned out with this show and it's not hard to tell. The soundtrack is also brilliant, despite it being about the same four tracks most of the time. It is sometimes ambient, though. Catherine's return last episode was unfortunately spoiled for me but it's nice to see that she's back to her scheming ways, I actually do quite like her as a character. Btw I was very surprised to find out that Norma's mother in the show isn't actually the actress' real mother because the resemblance is mad

Soap opera done suspensefully right

One of the best transitional episodes of the show. It's quieter than the previous but it's a little bit greater than others. We all know who the killer is and watching that person on the loose makes this outing. The next episode is going to be the ultimate one I feel.

Suspicions and wrong tracks

So we folllow Leland and how the identity disorder still got him and hide Maddie even if they will found her at the end. Audrey admit that she just wanted a father who loved her. Horn get trapped by Catherine. Bobby find a tape.

Still nice episode. The plot continue to deliver some interesting moments: emotions, funny, intriguing, mysteries, love, investigations. The recipe continue to work and the wrong lead that the police are in right now make us want to see if Leland can get away despite his problems. Horne seem pretty innocent but we need to see more to find out. Cooper and Audrey seem to be more close again and that will be interesting to see how their relationship will evolve. Need to see more.

When you think the cringe couldn't get worse, Lynch surprises you again. I'm talking about Lucy's sister Gwen showing up. Like one of her wasn't one more than I can handle. Haha.

Cringeworthy

So far, I've watched this series for "so bad it's good" value. Plods like an anemic snail. Cheesy. Hokey. Maudlin. Like a unrelenting, slow motion acid trip. Contemporary soap operas were Oscar winning dramas by comparison. High ratings for this show must be the product of shroom or pre-blackout, too much grain alcohol-in-the-punch parties.

Made enough of an impact on my mom, though, that she still remembers "log lady" despite her advanced dementia.

So ... this episode. Painful to watch the totally self-absorbed weirdness. Really liked Leland better as the angel in Fargo. In this series he's just sadly weird ... especially through the big reveal.
