The American Psycho episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Horror can take many forms and its high time we talked about something firmly in the psychological realm. Author Brett Easton Ellis is known to broach subjects that are uncomfortable or outright horrifying, but it is with his 3rd book that he went for the throat so to speak and tackle a more traditional genre topic in a thoroughly nontraditional way. American Psycho was quite controversial upon its release in 1991 and the film based on it in 2000 (watch it Here) was divisive then and it’s divisive now.
Take a look at the craftsmanship on that card as we find out what the f*ck happened to this adaptation.

Bret Easton Ellis’ latest novel “The Shards” goes where only Bret Easton Ellis could possibly go: back to 1981 Los Angeles with a 600-page book, largely unedited, that’s mostly about himself.
That’s partly because the main character is named Bret, a nihilistic, 17-year-old, bisexual San Fernando Valley trust-fund prep-school brat who’s writing a book called “Less Than Zero.” Yes, this is literary-horror autofiction from the author of that aforementioned 1985 debut and shocking postmodern novels like “American Psycho.”
“The Shards” is also a more-or-less direct transcript of the Patreon serial Ellis launched in late 2020, and its unwieldiness means it’s well-matched for a long-form, flashy series adaptation at HBO. As IndieWire has confirmed, “The Shards” is now being set up at the premium cabler with Ellis as the sole writer while executive producing with Nick Hall (Emmy-winning executive producer on “The White Lotus”) and Brian Young (an executive producer...

“Trainspotting” writer Irvine Welsh and “American Psycho” author Bret Easton Ellis are in final talks with the U.K.’s Burning Wheel Productions to co-create a dramatized series based on the national tabloid press culture in the U.S.
With the working title “American Tabloid,” the series will unspool over decades and follow events from a weekly publication where political correctness, morals and ethics are unheard of.
The deal is expected to get confirmed in the coming weeks, with a development schedule to follow.
“To do this production justice we always knew we would require writers who don’t hold back and go way further than most would dare,” said Shelley Hammond of Burning Wheel. “We are just beyond delighted that we are ready to agree a deal to make this happen with the incredible talent of Bret and Irvine. Screenwriter and author Bret Easton Ellis claims free speech is being muzzled in the current political climate and that Hollywood has become “more uninteresting” as creativity is stifled.
Speaking to Rolling Stone, the author of the generation-defining book Less Than Zero and screenwriter for American Psycho awaits a Hulu version of Less Than Zero that just wrapped.
He said the recent stifling of speech in the current political climate means “everyone feels muzzled now, and it comes down to how much you can take. Can I talk about what I’m feeling and say my opinion? You get to a point where there’s a break, a fissure, and you either decide to go through it and be yourself, or you decide to hide. I don’t know what kind of life it’s like to hide. I feel more comfortable expressing myself as a completely transparent man now.”

Warner Bros will only halt talk of its superhero movies being in trouble by rebuilding trust with audiences and critics – enter Ben Affleck’s The Batman
Bret Easton Ellis may well go down as one of this era’s epochal novelists, a singular essayist on the icy inhumanity of 20th- and 21st-century living, delivering grim librettos on the emptiness of privileged youth. As a film-maker, his legacy is less assured, as anyone who has seen The Informers will be aware. But that has not stopped Ellis joining the merry band of blowhards who enjoy giving Warner Bros’ DC expanded universe (Dceu) of superhero movies a good kicking at every available opportunity.
“I was having dinner with a couple of executives who know other executives who are working on the Batman movie, The Batman,” Ellis told The Ringer. “And they were just telling me that there are serious problems with the script.

Bret Easton Ellis has been active in cinema in the last couple of years, even if he hasn't been behind the camera himself. His screenwriting attempts for Paul Schrader's "The Canyons" starring Lindsay Lohan and Gregor Jordan's "The Informers" (which was based on his own book), didn't turn out so hot. Aside from those films, Ellis has been pretty quiet on the cinematic front, opting instead for his books to be adapted by various directors. Read More: Review: Paul Schrader's 'The Canyons,' Starring Lindsay Lohan & James Deen Some of these adaptations have been very successful, such as "American Psycho," which has become a cult classic over the years, with director Mary Harron sharpening the satire that made the novel so brilliant (a musical based on the book opened on Broadway last week). Through numerous adaptations of his work, such as Less Than Zero, American Psycho, and The Rules of Attraction, novelist Bret Easton Ellis has become a familiar name to film fans over the years. In 2008, however, the novelist stepped into the film realm himself, co-adapting his book The Informers for the big screen. He followed it up with an original screenplay in 2013 for The Canyons, and his next foray into features will see him adapt another person’s novel.

Angela Sarafyan, a television-based actress who had a couple of stabs at indie gigs such as Gregor Jordan’s The Informers and followed this up with Matt D’Elia’s American Animal and then saw her cred rise with a small part in the final Twilight film and has since added a slew of indie films to her resume (along with one major production opening this week in Paranoia) has, according to The Wrap (and tweets from the actress herself) picked up the part of the antagonist in scribe Max Landis’ directing debut, Me Him Her. Sarafyan will play a character named Heather Frost. Filming is underway in Los Angeles.

Bret Easton Ellis‘s novels have had an interesting path to the big screen: the only novel that fully captured his writing is The Rules of Attraction, a movie that divided audiences; American Psycho is a cult favorite that Ellis isn’t entirely pleased with; Less Than Zero, although featuring a great performance from Robert Downey Jr., is a terrible adaptation; and the less said about The Informers, well, the better. However, The Canyons is a film Ellis had a very different relationship with. The La noir is one of many original scripts he’s written, but it’s the only one that has made it to the screen with the help of Kickstarter, producer Braxton Pope, and director Paul Schrader. The movie is as much a statement about filmmaking as it is anything else, and Ellis had his own statements to make about modern cinema culture and adapting the unadaptable. Is...

Lindsay Lohan. James Deen. Bret Easton Ellis. Paul Schrader. It isn’t so much a case of one of these things not being like the other, as much as none of them sharing a single common strand of DNA, such that a film involving all of them will invariably go one of two ways – an alluring curio, or an unmitigated train-wreck.
This $250,000 experimental film, rolling out on VOD platforms this week, is one which scribe Ellis himself has decried as a “languorous” interpretation of his screenplay, yet the director’s inexplicable effort nevertheless allows the perceived misogyny of the author’s work to run painfully amok throughout.
Self-reflexive to a point, The Canyons examines the lack of actual creativity that drives Hollywood, as the future of a movie project hinges on the whim of sexually possessive movie producer Christian (Deen). He casts young up-and-comer Ryan (Nolan Gerard Funk) in a role,...

Apparently Lindsay Lohan is still an actress, and acts in movies and such. Her latest is “Cat People” director Paul Schrader’s “The Canyons”, which you may or may not have heard a little bit about in the press (or the gossip sites if you peruse such places). The film’s big draw seems to be, well, that it stars Lindsay Lohan. That’s still a draw, right? For others, it could be that it’s from Bret Easton Ellis, the guy who wrote “American Psycho”, “The Informers”, and “The Rules of Attraction”. So yeah, he knows about messed up people. Anyways, check out your first look at “The Canyons” starring Lohan. I’m not sure what the movie is about, but it’s apparently a “violent, sexually-charged tour through the dark side of human nature”. And Lindsay Lohan may or may not take her clothes off in the movie.

In a provocative collaboration, writer Bret Easton Ellis and Taxi Driver director Paul Schrader pulled in controversial actress Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen for a sultry, sexy film called The Canyons. Early hype for the film included stranger teaser trailers themed around Los Angeles, infused with grindhouse traits, thrown back to the 1950s and another one that went even more retro with a 1930s vibe. Now an official trailer has arrived to give us a better idea of this film's style and story which follows the haphazard youth, glamor and sex of their lives and how it will eventually unravel the sanity. Watch below! Here's the first real trailer for Paul Schrader's The Canyons, originally from Apple: It’s not The Hills, it's The Canyons. Nicholas Jarecki makes his feature directorial debut with Arbitrage, the thriller that earned Richard Gere a Golden Globe nomination for his leading performance.
The film debuted at Sundance last year to positive early reviews, and was released in the States last year. Damen was impressed by the film when he saw it last year – you can read our review here – and it looks to be a promising thriller landing in just a few weeks’ time.

We've seen teaser trailers for the new film from writer Bret Easton Ellis and director Paul Schrader that have taken on the styles of grindhouse horror, the 1950s and just a simple location centric teaser spotlighting Los Angeles. Now the final "parody" teaser with Lindsay Lohan has arrived and it takes on the 1930s. As the Facebook page (via The Playlist) says, "People wanted images from the film and I didn't want to do anything definitive until a distributor was on board so these teasers were an interim solution." We're assuming the "I" is Schrader. Here's the final teaser trailer, and we'll see when the film gets released. Young people doing bad things is a familiar trope in indie flicks, featuring in everything from "The Rules Of Attraction" to "Cruel Intentions" to "The Informers" and more. Amber Heard has already been down that path as the star of "The Informers," and once again it looks like she'll be in a film where everyone seems just a little bit crooked. Following the arguably amateur-ish trailer released last month, a few more pics from "Syrup" have landed online. Co-starring Shiloh Fernandez and Kellan Lutz, and directed by Aram Rappaport, the story follows Scat (Fernandez) who discovers the idea for a new soda beverage named Fukk Cola. "The fucking American Dream in a can," he says. He pitches it to 6 (yes, that's her name, and she's played by Heard), the production manager at Coke, who agrees that it has massive potential to make them rich. But Scat's roommate Sneaky Pete sees this opportunity for wealth and.

A movie trailer billing itself as a “controversial motion picture” starring Lindsay Lohan? Nope, this is not the buzzy Liz & Dick, which stars the actress as Elizabeth Taylor. It’s Lohan’s other (and seeimingly much more) controversial film, The Canyons. The trailer hit the web on Monday.
The Canyons features Lohan and porn actor James Deen as young Los Angelenos discovering the dangers of sexual obsession.
The movie takes place in the present, but this dialogue-free trailer went for the vibe of a campy ’60s thriller. Check it out below:

We don't see Kim Basinger up on the big screen all that often anymore. In fact, it was two years ago that she last popped up in the Zac Efron vehicle "Charlie St. Cloud." Before that movie was another two year gap, with 2008 seeing her in three pictures: "The Burning Plain," "The Informers" and something called "While She Was Out." But the actress is coming out of the woodwork once again, for a movie that will likely be more worth her time than most of her recent resume. Basinger has come aboard the solid ensemble of Paul Haggis' next film, "Third Person," joining Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Mila Kunis, Adrien Brody, Casey Affleck and James Franco in the picture. She'll be playing the wife of Neeson's character who is a writer of some kind. She then gets taken in Budapest....oh wait, wrong movie. While the plot details have...

Amber Heard and movies based on cult novels don't seem to fit so well together. "The Informers," based on Bret Easton Ellis' book, was largely ignored, while "The Rum Diary" didn't manage to bring much life to Hunter S. Thompson's work. I was going to kick off by saying “It’s been some time since Kim Basinger really graced our screens” — but that’s technically not true. While she hasn’t made an onscreen appearance in about two years — itself not such a long time — it was in the relatively successful Charlie St. Cloud, and that only came a few years after parts in The Informers, The Burning Plain, and The Sentinel. Even if you didn’t see those, there’s a fair chance you’ve heard of them. Shouldn’t that count for something?

The Canyons, billed as 'contemporary La noir', pairs Lohan with former porn star James Deen and sees the maverick storyteller writing directly for the screen for the first time
You might think that any film-maker taking the brave step of putting Lindsay Lohan and porn star-turned-thespian James Deen in a movie together might want to ensure at least one of them was front and centre in the debut trailer. Not so Paul Schrader, director of The Canyons, which is scripted by Bret Easton Ellis, perhaps because the film has only been shooting in La for a couple of weeks, after the project recently secured funding via the crowdfunding site Kickstarter.
Instead, the trailer delivers a scattershot montage of California images, set to the Dum Dum Girls' Coming Down, suggesting, perhaps, that the City of Angels will be as prominent a cast member as either of the film's more obvious draws.

Despite a weird and kind of funny title, Arbitrage, a financial thriller starring Richard Gere, picked up some pretty impressive notices at Sundance, with many critics saying it was one of the best films at the festival. With an early Fall release date planned, we now have the first trailer, which looks kind of alright.

Arbitrage, the feature-directing debut of writer Nicholas Jarecki (The Informers, The Weight), is a taut and alluring suspense thriller about love, loyalty, and high finance. Troubled New York hedge-fund magnate Robert Miller (Richard Gere) desperate to complete the sale of his trading empire makes an error that forces him to turn to an unlikely person for help.

The supporting cast: Tim Roth as a Detective, Brit Marling as his daughter, Susan Sarandon as his wife, Josh Pais, Laetetia Casta and Nate Parker in a key role. Everyone in and out of Hollywood has been hate-reading, love-reading, fantasy casting, parodying and talking non-stop about Fifty Shades of Grey for months now, but we’re still pretty surprised about who has turned out to be the biggest fan of them all: best-selling author Bret Easton Ellis. Since last week the American Psycho scribe has been tweeting about how much he wants to adapt the Twilight-fanfic-inspired Bdsm trilogy for the big screen. He’s contacted his agent and everything. Nor does this seem to be a fleeting obsession: Last night, when he could have been tweeting about his real decision to cast Lindsay Lohan opposite porn star James Deen in his movie The Canyons, he was armchair casting Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele instead. His ideas weren’t groundbreaking, but now we’re starting to wonder if they’ll really start gaining traction.

The last few years of Lindsay Lohan’s life have been turbulent. Despite well publicized, personal troubles and her ostracism from Hollywood, the estranged, former child star has pressed on in her attempts to revive her career. Now, it looks as though she could be rewarded for her efforts after landing the female lead in the upcoming Bret Easton Ellis/Paul Schrader, Kickstarter funded project The Canyons. Fans of Bret Easton Ellis will note that the controversial author has had a mixed bag when it comes to screen adaptations of his work, from the brilliant American Psycho, to the truly average The Informers. Now it seems, fed up with the dilution of his ideas via the cinematic process, the writer has teamed up with Taxi Driver writer, and reputed director, Paul Schrader to make the film as pure and true to his vision as possible. Despite a recent car accident that may have her in legal trouble, and might jeopardize her upcoming Lifetime movie Liz and Dick to boot, Lindsay Lohan has picked up a new film role-- and one that will unite her with a porn star, no less. After raising the budget through Kickstarter, Bret Easton Ellis's thriller Canyons is ready to start shooting in July, with Paul Schrader attached to direct and Lohan joining James Deen in the lead roles, as characters named Christian and Tara., This all comes from Ellis's Twitter feed, where he's also been campaigning for the job of adapting 50 Shades of Grey to the big screen, for what that's worth. The basic plot structure of The Canyons, which "documents five twenty-something's quest for power, love, sex and success in 2012 Hollywood," sounds a good bit like the most recent movie based on a screenplay by Ellis, The Informers,...

Easton Ellis is teasing Twitter with ideas on casting, directors and screenwriters (himself) for the adaptation of El James's erotic novels. Is he serious?
Maverick novelist Bret Easton Ellis has put himself forward to adapt erotic literary sensation Fifty Shades of Grey for the big screen with an enthusiastic Twitter splurge.
El James's tale of bondage and domination has become the fastest-selling book of the year, prompting a rush among publishers to develop their own take on the emerging "mommy porn" phenomenon. Studio Universal won the screen rights in March and plans a trilogy based on the novel and its two sequels. Angelina Jolie was at one point tipped to direct following the critical success of her debut film In the Land of Blood and Honey. Easton Ellis, however, has other ideas.

Most people were of the opinion that Billy Bob Thornton and Angelina Jolie were an odd match during their three-year marriage. Unfortunately, Billy Bob was one of those people, and it pretty much ruined everything. “She has one way she wanted to live her life and I had another way to live mine,” Thornton tells ABC’s Nightline in an episode set to air tonight. “I was just too insecure.” Of course, the non-stop gossip about the couple’s 20-year age difference and, uh, relative attractiveness didn’t help matters either. According to The Informers actor, he felt “like the Phantom of the Opera hiding in the catacombs” compared to Jolie. “People actually said that I didn’t deserve to be with her,” Billy Bob shares. Oh boy…were we one of those people? Jeez, we’re sorry. All those Phantom of the Opera jokes were just too good to pass up!

Writer Bret Easton Ellis has earned a reputation as one of the literary world's most controversial satirists. His books have been turned into films before - most notably Mary Harron's excellent adaptation of American Psycho back in 2000 - and the novelist himself made the difficult transition to the movies with his debut screenplay, The Informers, back in 2009. He's finally working on another film, The Canyons, and is keeping the controversy alive by expressing a desire to cast 25-year-old porn star James Deen as the lead in the movie. THR points us to a tweet from the writer that says filming begins this summer. Read on!
