Visually spellbinding but charmless family fare
TheLittleSongbird3 December 2010
When I first heard of this film, I was both curious and overjoyed. The Nutcracker by ETA Hoffmann is one of my all-time favourite stories you see, and I am deeply in love with the ballet music by Tchaikovsky. However, when I heard there was 3D I wasn't as enthused. So what were my overall thoughts after seeing it? That of bitter disappointment, that's what.

The Nutcracker in 3D isn't without its virtues though. The film is visually spellbinding with wonderful sets and exquisite costumes particularly at the beginning and with the snow fairy. Also Elle Fanning is very good as Mary, instead of being obnoxious and annoying, she is heartfelt and believable.

However, I wasn't so taken with the effects, which brings me to a point I made earlier. I think the 3D was unnecessary to be honest. When I think of The Nutcracker, 3D is the last thing you expect. Sadly, it wasn't that good, it needed more clarity and sharpness and distracted rather than enhanced.

I also had mixed feelings on the songs. The music itself is outstanding, well it is Tchaikovsky what do you expect, with elegant and poignant melodies. The problem lay in the lyrics, even for Tim Rice they were really quite dull and insipid. The only songs that didn't leave me completely cold were My Secret World-while too short the melody based on the beautiful and nostalgic 2nd movement of the 5th symphony was amazing- and The Rat King's song which was quite wacky.

My main problems though with the film were with the story, writing and acting, also with the direction. Andrey Konchalovskiy said he had wanted to do this project for years, somehow that fact didn't come through loud and clear enough. The action is also very clumsy, and the pacing is much too rushed. Consequently the story instead of magical and charming like it promised with a touch of darkness and austerity to emphasize the reality is convoluted and messy particularly when the film's tone shifts, while the script especially with Uncle Albert and the "Nazi rats" is terrible with no sense of wonder or care.

The acting on the whole is pretty dire, which is very disappointing considering how good the cast looked on paper. Fanning of course gives a great performance, which is more than I can say for her co-stars who either give up half-way through or come across as wasted talent. Nathan Lane in particular tries hard but his spirited performance is hampered severely by the film's worst dialogue and the patchy accent. John Tuturo, with a David Bowie-like wig, fares a little better but does verge on overracting. It is not entirely his fault as the script lets him down terribly making him come across as cartoony. Likewise with Frances DeLa Tour. I liked the Snow Fairy though, she was beautiful and suitably mysterious. Shirley Henderson is okay as Nutcracker, but I didn't find Nutcracker heroic enough, and the message seemed to originate from Uncle Albert rather than Nutcracker here. Worst is the Prince, his wooden acting makes marionettes more animated. At the end of the day, I only cared character-wise for Mary.

Also, I think the film is 15 minutes too long. The Nutcracker works better in my view as a 75 minute film, because of the length there was a lot of filler that perhaps didn't need to be there. I wish to say before I am told I am being unfair that I am well aware this was an untold story. Also I didn't mind whether it was the story or not, so long as it stuck with its charm and magic. And that was my main problem with The Nutcracker in 3D, it didn't do that. I didn't think much of the title either, something like Nutcracker:The Untold Story would have been much more fitting.

Overall, in my personal opinion The Nutcracker in 3D is this year's biggest disappointment. It had all the ingredients for a worthwhile Christmas cracker, but it came across as rather charmless family fare with a convoluted story, poor acting on the whole and the unnecessary inclusion of 3D. 3/10 for the production values, Tchaikovsky's music and Elle Fanning, and I also think if Hoffmann or Tchaikovsky were alive to see this they would ask for a letter of apology. Attention to detail please
impact201130 December 2010
I saw this movie with my wife and daughter (7) in America recently, we are from Ireland. We were excited to go and see it as it is the only story written in which my daughter name is used. Unfortunately we were very disappointed when we realized the main characters name was changed to Mary. In the original story and ballet the little girl's name is 'Clara', in future productions please pay attention to the small details. As for the movie it was entertaining the story follows the ballet version to a point but is let down by the lack of music. The main focus seemed to be placed on the special effects in which the Nut Cracker and Clara are transported to the princes world, The Rat King played by John Turturro was well done he is a very fine actor. The make-up on the rats and the rat king was more akin to 'The Grinch' movie starring Jim Carrey than something more original. What was good was the color used, the sets and the overall production it had the Christmas feel to some degree. The movie unfortunately is let down by the lack of music, the acting and particularly the connection between Clara and the Nut Cracker. Overall this movie is not great.

Good visuals, but despicably tasteless and tone-deaf
suzukinathie18 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has a few redeeming qualities. The effects are decent, the visuals are impressive, and most of the adult actors play their part well. The story, though convoluted and somewhat confusing, isn't particularly boring, and for the most part manages to keep the audience interested.

But, with that said, these still do little to salvage the film.

This movie is perhaps the most cruel, bad-taste, tone-deaf film I have ever seen in my life, mixing a distorted version of the Nutcracker story with allegories to Nazi Germany, genocide, and the Holocaust. The antagonist Rat King and his rat soldiers wear Nazi-style uniforms and proclaim the foundation of a "thousand-year empire" - an obvious allegory to Adolf Hitler's "thousand-year Reich".

But the Nazi-esque rat imagery isn't a simple "bad guy" motif. No, they go the whole way and have the Rat King declares that, in due time, he will exterminate all non-rats and toys as part of his "RATification" policy (again, an obvious reference to the "Final Solution").

And if that wasn't bad enough, the Nazi rats actually round up toys by the thousands, pile them in the city square, and burn them in ovens - smokestacks, slave laborers and all - while dancing and singing to renditions of Tchaikovsky's music.

Talk about bad taste! I think my jaw hit the floor when I saw that scene! I've seen movies that are tone-deaf, but this is something on a whole different level!

And that's not to mention the other disturbing visuals, such as the rats ripping off someone's head and playing catch with it, or the grotesque rat-teeth effects (which would surely frighten any young child unfortunate enough to watch this film) or the fact that one of the main protagonists has a disturbing and borderline-psychotic habit of breaking and burning toys for no discernable reason.

Way too dark and way too disturbing for any kid's movie - let alone a Christmas movie and especially the Nutcracker story.

In short, "Nutcracker: The Untold Story" should have really stayed true to its name and remained untold.

What were they thinking!!!
killb-9418 November 2011
I'm sure there's been the occasional viewer that wonders why I do get so angry about movies sometimes. Well, films are something that I'm very passionate about, every movie that I've seen goes from that is praised with comments or hate with every cell of my brain.

And speaking of the literal Devil, we have ourselves "The Nutcracker in 3D"!!!

...This is the worst movie I've ever seen!!!! First of all, Anderi Konchalovsky directed this crap! He previously directed "Runaway Train" and the TV-movie "The Odyssey". I can't accept this!!! How is that possible that he went from a groundbreaking movie and a cult fantasy film to This?!?

What's the point on making a movie with Nazi Rats (They are Mice in the original story, you idiots!!!) that burn toys like how they did to the Jews?!?

OK, if Konchalovsky wanted to make a despotic movie with Nazis represented like greedy rats and other political animal-alike allusions that's OK! It's interesting! ...But leave the classic story of the Nutcracker alone!!!

It would be like... If I make a movie about the tale of Aladdin, where Aladdin is Obama, Jafar is a Bin Laden, Agrabah a New York-alike city destroyed by terrorist attacks and The Genie be an incarnation of Uncle Sam! Oh, and all this weird despotic crap pretended to be a "kids movie". No!No!No!!! That's not how it works!!! I'll describe the two scenes that mostly offended me: the Rat King, after performing a bad-choreographed musical number, kills a shark inside a tank by electrocuting it with a light!!! The second one, the Rat King suddenly rips off the head of a living Drummer Boy with bare hands and for a few seconds he plays volleyball with his Nazi-soldiers using the head of the poor guy and than replace it and act like nothing happened! You know, for KIDS!

But of course, these are the images that comes to your mind when you think of the Nutcracker! ...Nazi creatures that burn toys, kill sharks and play volleyball with the head of their victims HELLO?!?

The movie is an awful waste of money and talent(...If there was ANY!!!), and it sucks balls because for the unappealing Nazi characters, the awful 3D effect and for turning Tchaikovsky's music into horrendous songs that makes "Marry the Mole" look like Bohemian Rhapsody!!!

And I'm not the only person who thinks this "movie" in an abomination: 0% on Rotten Tomatoes! And Roger Ebert said: "The Nutcracker in 3D is one of those rare holiday movies that may send children screaming under their seats." In fact, no kid went to see this movie! The Nutcraker in 3D was a giant NUT-BOMB at the box office!!!

This movie is one of those rare movies that can insult the intelligence of Anybody. Do not watch it.

A waste of time
fvault_dweller4 December 2010
Disappointing in most respects. Inconsistent plot, poor lyrics, poor music adaptation, unconvincing acting for most of the movie. Like most reviewers will probably acknowledge, the visual effects are OK, but have no cause to serve. The film is a waste of nice animation, exactly what I wouldn't have expected from Koncealovski. And now, for a few upsetting details...

It is very difficult to become attached to any of the characters, because they are so superficially introduced. I don't get the real feeling of a backstory, which actually damages the whole universe of the film. Mary is the only character which seems alive, for better or worse. Otherwise, they are all pale and unconvincing.

The techno-fairy tale / political satire mix doesn't help either. I'm thinking of loads of splices you'd be able to make, starting from an original fairy tale, and I can't understand why you'd combine a Disney style dramatization with an oppressed-toys(and humans)-against-evil-nazi-rats uprising. It's not fun enough for adults, it's not simple and clear enough for children. And it doesn't have so much to do with the original...

And talking about the original, the use of Tchaikovsky's music is uninspired, to say the least. The adaptation sounds simplistic, and voices may not have been a good idea. First of all, because it used to be a ballet and, call me a rigid type, but I'd have loved to see it developed on this line. Second, because the lyrics are dull, and the actors' voices sound really bad at times (ok, try to make it sound natural but do follow the notes!). Third, because the modern orchestration further reduces the charm of the original, turning it into a sort of kindergarten party song. As far as the musical part goes, I'm taking Sweeney Todd as a reference. And, compared to this, Nutcracker is way below.

Bottom line? Don't see it, even if the other guy is paying. It's plain loss of time and a poor reference about the classics, if you have any children.

Awful.
mumandkids4 December 2011
Even the kids hated it. At end daughter asked if we could put it in the rubbish. I wanted to stop watching by halfway.

Holocaust themes, dark and violent for younger children, and lots of rat teeth.

To be fair, make-up and costumes were alright plus Elle Fanning is gorgeous and a talented actress but even as the main redeeming feature she was unable to support this holocaust-themed bastardisation of a ballet. Tim Rice may be good at lyrics but the breaks into song were un-natural and whole thing forced, boring and dreary. Composers would be turning in their graves. I truly hope I never watch this again!

Objectively Bad Film
alexjsanchez22 December 2011
Make no bones about it, this movie sucks. It does have some meriting factors--interesting set design and production. And that's pretty much it! Writing, directing and acting: ham-fisted at best. The songs are TERRIBLE, the film's themes are all over the place and forget about any sense of continuity. Inexplicably, the main character's uncle is Albert Einstein who deigns it necessary to sing a dreary diddy about relativity and the rats are Nazis because... who knows?! The biggest disappointment: the stupid looking Nutcracker (who goes by NC!) that looks like an unimaginative Pinocchio. Glad to see this film bombed at the box office, hard.

Among the worst films ever.
jenandjoe16815 February 2013
I don't usually do this. I don't really care enough to post on here, but for this travesty of a movie I had to register. This film has: horrible acting, horrible plot, horrible script, rotten to the bone.

I have no idea for whom this movie was made, in appropriate for children boring and immature for adults. The only saving grace is that they spent 90 million on it and only got back a few grand. Anyone associated with this piece of crap should be ashamed of themselves.

PS: I'm willing to bet money that anyone giving this a positive review is either associated with the film and has no soul, or has recently been the victim of a horrible TBI.

It's so weird, I Recommend seeing this dumpster fire.
irishboy14125 October 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the best So-bad-it's-good films of all time.

The film has everything;

Nazi rats with strange illusions to the Holocaust (even though it's set in the 1920s, a decade before the Nazi's rise to power). Albert Einstein is here for no reason and does weird 4th wall breaks, the music, the effects are horrendous (despite a 90 million dollar budget), the toy characters make no sense, there's weird imagery that'll give kids nightmares, oh and John Turturro plays a mixture of Andy Warhol and Adolf Hitler. It's jaw dropping how dumb/weird the decisions are.

The set design for Vienna is surprisingly stunning, all the money must have gone into the sets and props.

As bad as it is, I recommend seeing it for the sheer oddness on display. It's such an odd little duck.

Not perfect but enjoyable
gsiverson3 December 2010
I watched this movie several times in spite of some very negative reviews. I must say some, not all of the criticism is valid.

I think Charlie Rowe is superb. His facial expressions and body language are right on and not over acted. They range from amazed joy to quiet reminiscence as well as outright dejected disbelief. I felt every one of his emotions with one look at his face. Now try and tell me that isn't acting. On the other hand the Snow Fairy, all be she very beautiful, was rather flippant and maybe even glib. Probably because her lines could have been phrased better. All the other characters were believable and enjoyable in their own ways. Except for my personal dislike for Uncle Albert's fronts to the audience. Just my personal preference, you are welcome to enjoy them.

Apparently the movie was not shot in 3D but enhanced in post production. As far as I am concerned that was a waste of good money. Even if some of it may have been spent in Vancouver Canada. (I know some VFX was done here. Whether for the 3D or not I don't know.) Perhaps movies originally shot in 3D would come across more natural.

It is obvious a lot of the movie is on the cutting room floor. If this ever comes out in DVD I hope they publish the full director's version. If they do I will definitely pay premium price to add this to my collection.

Will I see it again? Yes, if it ever comes here again. Love the kids, the Rat King's antics, his Mother's expressions and the ending.

I found the Nutcracker entertaining and dramatic without being sickly sweet
susansolly11 December 2015
This film has received some negative reviews but in comparison with many of the Christmas offerings which offer schmaltzy sentimental rubbish this has some drama and tight spots and you are drawn into the action. The nut cracker when returned to life lacks charisma which the toy seems to have through only the voice. The contrast between Mary and her brother Max is nicely realised.

Of course there is a sense of history and some scenes are reminiscent of the book burning under the Nazis and the dating of the plot as the 1920 can tend to emphasis this.

The special effects are good and the rat faces well made

The title was accurate but deceptive
Nozz7 June 2014
If I understand correctly, the lengthened title "The Nutcracker: The Untold Story" wasn't used till the movie had already failed under the simple "Nutcracker" title. I can understand that "The Nutcracker" by itself leads to false expectations. As a matter of fact, I ran into the movie on TV just as it was ending, the kid was singing to the music of Tschaikowsky's piano concerto, and I said to myself, "Wow, they've run through all the beloved Nutcracker music and they've had to add even more Tschaikowsky!" So I made a point of catching the movie again, from the beginning this time, and where were the Nutcracker tunes? Quite absent most of the time, although when they popped up they were sometimes interestingly reworked. They would have made a nice addition to a movie that was not expected necessarily to include them, but they were rather pitiful in a movie that you'd expect to be much more Tschaikowskian than it was. Although the nutcracker belongs originally to Hoffmann rather than to Tschaikowsky, and the basic elements of Hoffman's story aren't all thrown away for the movie, it's not Hoffmann that people care about these days. Keeping the nutcracker out of the title might have been too much to ask, but I think that adding to the title was the right idea. "Mary and the Nutcracker" or some other variation might have warned people that this is far from your standard version. On its own overall merits, rather than just its musical merits, I think the movie deserved to do better, although as others have pointed out, it can't be recommended for kids of all ages and between those too old for the formulaic rescue-the-kingdom story and those too young for the shock moments, the demographic of the target audience is kind of slippery.

will make you nuts. . .
vishal-1823 December 2010
One of the worst movies I have seen in the recent times. Usually i would try to find some good point in a movie, but no matter how I crack (no wonder I just watched nutcracker!) my head . . . nothing. Well, I do not want to take the credit away from the character of Mary, which was the only respite due to which at least I am rating 2 out of 10. When you go for such movies usually plot is not up for critical review, but this movie beats the lowest of the standards. Music is terrible, actors (except Elle) are worse, the flow of the movie allows anybody to keep jumping out for some popcorn. One might expect at least some 3D effects to feel compensated for the time, but clearly the movie (except for the first few scenes) are much late adaptation for 3D and literally makes you feel cheated. Usually, such movies that are targeted towards younger audiences manage extra chuckles from the young ones in the theater, but this movie succeeded in getting yawns from them!.

This Movie Isn't for Kids or Anyone
MockeryD8 May 2014
Okay, I'm all for taking a classic tale and retelling it. It has been done extremely well (e.g O Brother Where Art Thou) and Disney has made millions on taking classic tales and giving them a different spin.

Then you have the Nutcracker in 3D.

I'm not sure where this idea came from. The original story seems to be glossed over completely. Yes, there is a Nutcracker in the story but he isn't really much of a hero. It's not that this idea couldn't have been done will but it gets bogged down with some much uselessness.

First, Albert Einstein is in this movie. Yeah, that makes sense! Kids love German-born theoretical physicists! Then, we get the beautiful Nutcracker music that is given extremely awful lyrics. Add some racist caricatures, a heavyset character that is only there for fat shaming, Nazi rats (not joking) and loads of plot points that go nowhere.

Now this is suppose to be a kids movie right? Well I don't know about you but I wouldn't show this too kids. In fact, I wouldn't show this too anyone. It's way to dark and terrifying for kids to enjoy while it also too nonsensical and pointless for adults. Maybe if they had tried to do an original story inside of tacking on the Nutcracker characters, it could have been somewhat decent.

So in short, skip this CGI, surrealist nightmare.

Glad I didn't see it in 3D
ericstevenson17 December 2017
It's the little things that make this movie so bad. I've seen a lot of Nutcracker movies, especially now for Christmas Month and honestly. I think Care Bears did it best. The rating's pretty high there! This movie is notorious for its ugly looking CGI. The worst part is seeing those rats with human faces. That seriously drove me nuts. Speaking of nuts, there's even a crotch joke in this movie.

This movie just makes no sense. There's one scene where the Queen Rat strengthens her powers by drinking this juice causing the nutcracker prince to turn back into a toy. What does that have to do with anything? There's obvious Nazi analogies and it's way out of place for a kid's movie not to mention one taking places before Nazis even existed. The Rat King looks hideous with his teeth. That scares me as an adult!

The nutcracker has this really bad voice and for some reason jumping on a pillow grows him to human size. The characters are especially annoying. There's this one kid who betrays his sister for absolutely no reason. I think it may have been influenced by the Narnia movie that came out at this time. The toys look awful with their CGI, especially the dancing ones. It's a terrible Christmas movie and terrible movie in general. *

An insult to the senses.
viggenpower21 December 2018
This movie is the classic example of how NOT to adapt a story. With elements of Monty Python and Dad's Army, it fails to deliver any of the charm or comedic timing of either. Instead you are left with an absolutely terrifying assault to the brain. Why are there Nazis? Why are there crematoriums? Shock value needs to have a point. It needs a purpose. In this film it's simply gratuitous. It's a disgusting insult to film, and a bigger insult to the memory of the Holocaust.

This movie was so horrible it compelled me to write my first movie review. This movie is unfocused from the start to the end. Their is no character back story or introduction. The viewer is thrown into a bizarre post apocalyptic world of odd technology and awkward humanoid beings for 1.5hrs.

good intentions
Kirpianuscus1 May 2018
A dark adaptation. far to be awful but not enough for seduce. for adults, it has many good details, from the status of political satire to the references to Christmas and Grinch, reasonable performances and good occasion to discover Sigmund and Albert in not expected context. for children, it is real difficult to say if the film could be useful. because the ambition of director seems chaotic. and the lead desire, after its end, is to read to child the book of Hoffmann. the basic sin of film - it is a Konchalovsky one. and not only the expectation is high but the desire to meet a decent adaptation. sure, 3D and special effects are good points. but not exactly the convincing arguments. for children it is a too dark movie, for adults is far to be the version of the well known tale. it seems a moment of circus. many illusions, no crumb of truth. or emotion. and that is a real sad detail.

Quirky delight
sm-lang9 December 2022
Old themes that are relevant today. I not a fan of musical movies mostly, but this one seems only to jar occasionally. The mix of cast is interesting and the story meanders nicely.

The bad reviews are definitely a bit off. Worth a watch for sure and maybe even more than once. Young Fanning is a natural.

The dolls house characters are oddly funny as are the rat faced Germans lol I suspect a few kids would struggle with the scary bits and the plot. It kind of stands out if the are a quirky movie fan. People who like the formulaic film format will most likely hate it.

There are a couple of flat spots, but these are good opportunities to poor another drink :)

Almost 2 hours of my life I just want to forget
inessiiviton25 September 2019
So this was horrible. It came to Netflix and for a second I was quite excited of a movie adaption of the beloved and truly magical ballet. Little did I know that after watching this I would want to die.

The storyline is inconsistent and does not respect the original stories or the storyline we know from ballet. It's supposed to be an adaption, I get it, but with the nazi rats and very, very creepy Nutcracker it felt like I was warching a parody rather than a serious movie version of the original Nutcracker.

Tchaikovsky's music was horribly butchered via poorly constructed lyrics that only acted as a temporary distraction from the horrible storyline. The attempt was maybe to make this into a musical but the occasional songs did not exactly create a consistent musical effect. I will say that Elle Fanning is a charming and talented actress but even she couldn't support this bad of a movie.

So please, please don't watch this, it's not a cute version of a beloved christmas story, it's a weird and disturbing movie with a lot of II World War references that don't really serve a purpose in this movie. I hated it so much that I created an account here just so I could say just how vad this movie is.

Now I want to forget this movie.

Definitely worth watching!
posiedon18 September 2011
I think the reviews posted against this film are definitely too harsh. This is a fantasy film and the special effects, the creativity, the imagination and the characterization are all simply fantastic! This movie may not be a Harry Potter but it is surely a delight for any child and even entertaining enough for an adult. Waiting for the DVD release to pick up a copy for my kid.

The film is basically about a young girl whose boring life takes a dramatic turn when her toys come to life! The Nutcracker doll takes her into his own world and she helps him fight the evil Rat King.

With a stellar star-cast (award-winning actors like Nathan Lane, John Turturro, Frances De La Tour) and superb acting by the kids (Elle Fanning, Charlie Rowe), directed by Emmy Award winning director Andrei Konchlovsky, and 8 songs by Oscar award winning lyricist Sir Tim Rice, you cannot go wrong with such a great team!

The worst movie ever made. Poor, poor Elle Fanning.
chaseengland-4705114 February 2020
There are good movies. There are bad movies. There are terrible movies. There are movies so bad, they can be entertaining. And then... there's this.... whatever it is. Doug Walker was right. It's almost as bad as Garbage Pail Kids, Mulan 2, Foodfight, and so, SO MANY other awful movies out there.

I also pity Elle Fanning. She tried her best, but not even she alone could save this awful, horrible, very bad, miserable mess. Thank goodness for Maleficent 1 and Maleficent 2 where she was given much better material to work with. In all honesty, I don't even know, if I was part of the film's production, if I could have saved it. It's awful in so many ways. Not even in a so-bad-it's-good way. It's just saddening in its awfulness.

I never knew this movie existed and have never seen it. Thank goodness. For the parents and children who had to witness this monstrous abomination, I'm sorry. As a Generation Z kid who was born in 2001, I'm sorry this movie exists. But it does and now we all have to find a way to live with that fact. I promise to write a fantasy story that, hopefully, will be nothing like this. Good day and God bless you all.

Three-Dimensional Smoke
Vezon12330 January 2011
Today I will be brief. Do not think - I have not decided to join United Russia, no. Just what I saw today on the screen of your monitor and what I've read on the same screen a little earlier a few slightly earlier does not correspond to one another. But - in order.

What is read.

The film "The Nutcracker and the Rat King" in runet became famous even before its premiere in Russia, because originally it was in the U.S., and with a budget of 90 million green gathered only 200,000 of these. If someone does not understand - it's not even a failure, it's just a total, deep, and the final Paye, who basically scared to imagine any producer or investor. This is not "Imminence Nikita Mikhalkov, where" money on the screen, it's something more disastrous.

Also about the film was known that the role of voicing Phil Kirkorov, Pugacheva, and other reptiles, listen to which there is no special interest. Well, everything else, Konchalovsky gave some great, but terribly incoherent interview on the film, which was unable to properly answer a single question in the style of "And what you have here leshego rat-fascists? And what do they sing? ". And finally - U.S. critics have not understood the film and called it a dark horror movies, but not children's tale, and American children, according to reviews, write, and fled from the hall. I will say about it.

In the meantime, I'll tell you - "The Nutcracker" is certainly very far from a true masterpiece of the national tale, an animated cartoon "Our Masha and the Magic Nut", about which so beautifully told us someone Madison. In the commercials shows a good half of the cartoon, so it is strongly recommended for viewing, in order to estimate the extent of idiocy. Unfortunately, the full matyugov.

Thus, in preparation for viewing this opus, in my mind swarmed different thoughts about deterrence gag reflex. Given the fact that the film is a fairy tale - and I hate children, and all have been associated with, or rather do not like it when something is explained by "a child", and even more do not like when the children sing. Second in the film as expected, because this child fairy tale musical. So that was prepared in a plastic bag, trash and narkomovskie program.

What he saw.

And here's a beautiful outcome of all this. Funny that what I saw on the screen, did not cause me to outright disgust, which, in theory it should be. That is, the aversion was caused, but the. Besides, I make allowances for the very nasty children who play major roles, as well as the terrible voice acting voice.

The rest - on solid three points with a plus. The film, of course, filmed in a clear style sort of surrealism - apparently trying to imitate the "Alice in Wonderland" as the most severe in the contemporary film genre, Konchalovsky too far with the images. Clearly borrowed from Warhammer towers emerge from their rat-fascists, the Nazis themselves rat on dzhetpakah - it's still bearable, but when it turns out that the rat-fascists living by burning toys, and all the toys as soon as said in the beginning, LIVING ... In short, I do not envy the kids who watched this movie. Of course, this is a very interesting method to tell about the Holocaust, moreover, that in America a lot of supporters who are very fond of this theme ... ahem ... I'm clearly behind those words have been sentenced to death publicly in Aileu usr '... Well, okay.

So, the rats in the film really live by burning toys, smoky black smoke that veiled the sun, which is the main enemy of the rat - the type, the forces of darkness and all that. Given that the main voice of the rat says Kirkorov (sorry the original is not Michael Jackson), then you can deploy the theme of Good and Evil, but we will not go into details of the local mythology. In short, rats live as a working population is suffering, getting them toys. Gestapo is not asleep, the rats on dzhetpakah overlook the neighborhood and knocked the guerrillas, well, everything. Damn, I can not ... Really - look already own. I further impressions.

Thoughts and Conclusions.

Go tell that good in the film. Good exactly one thing - the beauty and special effects. Yes, yes, do not laugh. All sustained relatively nice eyes does not hurt, though a miserable modelka Nutcracker of two polygons initially infuriates, but then he turns into a kid and everything is normal. Around all shiny, all fabulous, all the color and foolish - in a word, eye pleasing.

Bad that the horrible actors. Children cause aversion, especially the girl who somewhere has already played - in serials, I think. In the House, for example. It is unclear why there is a mandatory negro character - a boy, a drummer who looked like a son of Bob Marley. Where in the original tale was told about blacks? Silly question. Incidentally, among rats, the Negro is not. Paradox.

Bad domestic licensing voice. Not bad, just awful. As I said earlier - the characters speak like morons. It is strange - why earlier baby voiced movie fine, but now - whether children believe idiots, or that - but spoken of as the chair read the poems. Slowly, loudly, with emphasis on the word. Darkness.

Bad songs. Especially since there are and original music. Texts of course - mascara lights, here again comes to mind "Our Mary" - a level the same. In short, ladies and gentlemen - the film is not really recommended for viewing, especially children and the children. They may like, and they grow by the Nazis. Black humor.
