A strong start!!
and_mikkelsen21 August 2022
After the absolut mad dash final season of GOT i was a bit skeptical with this show! After watching the first episode i can say that my fear is gone and expectations are raised!

The episode had its moments that took me back to the first seasons of GOT! The actors does a great job of making us invest in the new characters! Great to see Kings Landing doing Targaryen rule! Soundtrack, strangely good and great cinematogrophy!

The first episode shows potential, now we can only hope that the quality of this episode is carried throughout!

Solid start!

Nice start to an opening series. Definitely had my attention from the beginning to the end. Remember, this is a marathon, not a sprint. This episode laid down a great foundation for episodes to come.

Has potential to surpass Game Of Thrones.
sagargiri4621 August 2022
The first episode gave me chills. It gave a feeling of watching Game Of Thrones for the first time. A lot of things happen in the first episode but sets a very promising premise for upcoming story in future episodes.

There's violence, gore, action, nudity and politics. The actors gave justified performance to their characters and it felt good to experience that.

Just crossing my fingers that the future episodes are equally good.

As a book reader, this was everything i could have ever hoped for and more!
barron-42021 August 2022
House of the Dragon had a lot to prove, thanks to a lukewarm ending to Game of Thrones, but also the fact that it's based on a book that isnt a traditional story but more of a history book of a fictional royal family. Many (myself included) were worried about things such as dialogue, sub plots, exactly what are they gonna do to fill in the gaps? So many people have a bad taste in their mouths after that botched ending? Well, If this episode is any indication, i can breathe a huge sigh of relief. Episode 1 was everything i could have ever hoped for and more, beautifully written, beautifully acted, tragic, thought provoking, and eye opening. Paddy Considine gives a very nuanced portrayal of King Viserys I. Milly Alcock is fun as the fiery Rhaenyra Targaryen, but i believe the real stand out was Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, im going to have a blast watching him this season. Even the smaller roles carry huge emotional weight, the woman playing Aemma Arryn (forgive me, i dont know the actress' name) gave a touching performance despite limited screentime.

Wildly impressed with this premiere! CGI was everything you've come to expect with game of thrones but even BIGGER. Everything feels like its on a grander scale than before, this is truly the Targaryens in all their glory.

If you had any doubts, i hope this premiere episode will put them to rest, i am so happy to be back in Westeros again!

Spot on!
toxx_style21 August 2022
Dialogue absolutely spot on, effects spot on, action spot on , drama spot on. It feels like a Game of Thrones episode from season 1,2 or 3. First episode kept me glued to the screen. Hopefully they can keep it up!

The premiere of House Of The Dragon was stunning in cinematography while also keeping the same energy as GOT, overall this show will definitely make amends for the devastating goodbye we gave to Game Of Thrones. I cant wait for this new adventure, as it's only just begun.

Another HBO show, another great start!
diwakarmishraemail21 August 2022
Everyone please stop review bombing the show! Just three days ago I saw the same thing happening with She Hulk and now House of The Dragon?! Don't develop hate before even watching it and stop giving one star reviews. Just don't judge it on the basis of the ending of Game of Thrones and watch first!

When House of The Dragon was first announced,I had doubts as to whether it would be good. But as more and more trailers came out, they got me excited.

And then I saw the first episode, and it was an amazing way to start the series!

It does a pretty good job of introducing the characters! The pacing needs to get better The acting, cinematography and CGI are all amazing! The dragons look very realistic.

I hope that it gets better and better with every episode and become one of the greatest shows of all time because it has the potential.

It's good to be back in Westeros.

The series got off to a good start. The costumes, venue designs and cgi are perfect. The casting choices were also very good.

In short, the series made a very good start.

The House of the Dragons lives again!
GomezAddams66622 August 2022
Man, the Targaryen family are monsters, but this series is amazing.

It truly fulfilled all my expectations, the story is amazing, the acting is great, and the FX looks like HBO is not messing around.

The only bad thin is I have to wait a week for another episode.

House Targaryen lives again!

They kinda eased into it and it just got better and better. Sure some unnecessary woke moments with shots of some kid and all that.

It was better than I expected and the characters, I love em. But I got to say that Matt Smith steals the show ! And I was very surprised by Paddy Considine (The King) from posters and what not I didn't think he looked like a Targaryen but I fell into George R. R. Martins story and universe rather quickly. For me it was a great start of the show and I am already looking forward to next Sunday ! :D <3.

Solid start
XTheXXTruthX22 August 2022
A solid start.

The 1s and 10s in the ratings are baffling, it's neither great nor bad.

Takes a while to get going.

Matt Smith is excellent, potential there for a very memorable character.

I don't really get the complaints about the diversity, this doesn't feel forced the way some modern shows are (yes Sandman, I'm looking at you).

There's someone on here calling the show a masterpiece. After 1 episode.

There's another clown complaining about the sex, when that was one of the main reasons GoT became the phenomenon that it did, and we all know it. No-one wants some watered down poor imitation of the predecessor; if you don't like it go watch Wheel of Time.

This is sadly what HBO are up against, the advice would be to ignore the minority of offended balloons and focus on what made the first 4 season of GoT must watch television.

The fast food version of GoT
scott-9046123 August 2022
I did not particularly enjoy watching this. I feel it takes some of the worst aspects of the original series and shoves them at the audience. Needles graphic castration, check. Gross out shots, check. Prop dragons, check. Unnecessary and overly gratuitous sex scenes, check and check.

The cast is much smaller this time around and many of the scenes are the lesser for it. I feel like there should be more people at court. If you study our own history you see that pre-modern royals had A LOT of kids. Six to ten children are not uncommon for medieval English or French kings and that's just the ones that lived. Think about it, no birth control. These people are married at 14. Having one child for a king is unusual. Take all of Ned Stark's kids. Then when you consider all the men at court would have their large families with them, I'm just saying there should be a lot more people in these scenes. It feels like the production is a bit cheaper on this one. Maybe they spent too much on the dragons to be able to hire more actors.

As for the the actual characters on this one, I just don't find them interesting. They're all royals, all British. I personally don't find shows about aristocracy compelling. This is essentially a royal soap-opera fantasy. It's not helped by the fact that they all have this ridiculous white hair. I don't think the graphics are very good on white haired royalty lording it over the commens.

It's amazing.
Hello_ByeBye21 August 2022
Very impactful episode, lays out the plot for the entire show. Aemma Arryn is a character not given much detail in the book, but she's more prominent in the show and we'll fall in love with her. The acting is phenomenal and so are the visuals, this is a great start to House of the Dragon. Westeros will make its way into our hearts once again.

Great start
balci-songulpinar21 August 2022
There is nothing missing from the game of thrones. It's really successful. An unforgettable series has started again. Acting is also great. I saw the characters fit their personalities. I think it would be beneficial to read the book without watching the series. Comparative viewing is more useful. I've done this in Game of Thrones and have seen a lot of differences. So far it is going very well.

I'll review the episode only
TheMelancholySpirit23 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Why would I watch one episode of a series and rate the series, not the episode? People you know there are options right?

So this was... well, what was The Heirs of the Dragon? It was certainly something. It was not great, those giving it 10/10 are divided between those who just realllllly love this world and want so much to give it a 10/10, or those deluding themselves into thinking it is anywhere close to the heights of GoT at its best. Or even worst? While of course we all give our own difference of opinion, did you see how many reviews went onto fanboy over this as if it were some greased up Chris Hemsworth asking for a selfie? Or some Game of Thrones nudity scene they'd asked to reenact with Emilia Clarke? Pfffft. Calm down people. It was one episode, we have barely seen a tenth of what is to come. You're acting like we just saw Battle of the Bast*rds part 2. This was not that. I definitely don't agree with those trying to bring down the rating either though. Whether for the sake of it cuz they just like to snivel and wipe their nose and see its score be brought down and point at their screen and ghoulishly shout, "Ha, ha, I did that! Look mommy, I did that!" But to those genuinely loving this already, I'm happy for you. To those genuinely finding problems and being honest with this episode and they do not like it, I feel for you. Here's hoping by its end, the tenth episode, we'll have had something that we can look back and actually say, "That was good. That was really good."

Me? I'm somewhere in the middle. While I like the set pieces and designs, some cool camera shots, the atmosphere, the costumes and overall look of the show, I also like a few of the actors as I go into viewing. Matt Smith was never my favourite Doctor Who but he had his moments, for sure not the worst doctor. And I've been familiar with his works now, since Doctor Who for years, making that 12 as of this year. And I always liked Rhys Ifans. The cinematography has been mostly good looking as well. And for what it's worth, they didn't hold back on the gruesome carnage and death scenes, oh no. Was this wise? I guess they're aiming to bring in the old audiences and it is an old GoT standout, is it not. Ridiculous bloody killings and overuse of the word "cun*". It is like it never left us, is it not? Well, you be the judge of that. I didn't like some of the acting, maybe even their acting cast/choices, namely the new lead character princess, Rhaenyra. At angles, she makes you reminisce to Emilia Clarke's lead as Daenerys. There were oftentimes a bit too much in terms of airy, and colourful looking, shots. The dragons? Well I am definitely unconvinced seeing Daemon's. Also Daemon gives me serious Ramsay Bolton vibes. I was thinking Joffrey at the start, but no, definitely Ramsay. His character banished, well, uh, being sent away is gonna be a major conflict and will obviously stir up something plot wise. And some convoluted one at that. That was awful looking. The story is what gets me most. The writing. Again we are merely an episode in, so I give it the benefit of the doubt. But what's.. the point here? Why should I care? Why should I be invested? Especially after watching all of GoT and reading what I have, from everything I know. I- more importantly, WE all know the way this plays out. It's just a matter of seeing it unfold on big-screen? Which is fine, however the premise isn't doing much for me.

It might be one episode, sure. But in that, you're supposed to be given reasons to come back for more, to bring you in. GoT had this, with the end alone of Brann being shoved from the tower. This is because he sees something important, and we have just witnessed a seemingly very important character possibly killed already, and we don't know why? Well, we do but we really don't. And of course, the beginning with the White Walkers. What are they? Who? Why are they there? So a beginning, an end, and throughout enough to engage, evoke and keep the viewer interested while connecting the dots slowly in that one hour, which, I got to add, on its cheaper budget then, looked better than this one, now. Is that enough? There was also a more intriguing, like, basis/episode-based story, at least to me, given Jon Arryn had just been killed and it starts while Robert is king, so hand of king having been killed, Robert traveling to Ned and the Starks being brought into it with the Lannisters, the letter written to Catelyn, the dire wolf pups and how they came to be with the Starks, and finally across the sea we have introduction to Daenerys - so this all playing out was interesting, and they definitely did the whole tournament thing better when it comes to that too, unlike this episode where I just felt they did it for... whatever.

The pros: most of its camera work, cinematography, atmosphere, set pieces, acting is more good than bad but isn't a major pro for me

Cons: music isn't really a con, but it's pretty much copy pasted. It's the same. The lighting at times too bright, and then effects weren't amazing. The characters are meh. The writing and ideas until they get better, if they do, definitely remain here as well.

Really hope they improve. I guess what keeps me coming back in the meantime are the pros I've listed.

So I just watched HOTD episode 1 and wow...
nyxstrix21 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So here's my thoughts :

* it was INCREDIBLE * Ryan Condal adapted Fire and Blood perfectly * HOTD is much more cinematic than GOT * there was no intro * it was very fast paced (they could have really used longer runtime for telling this much story) * acting was perfect * **HOTD storytelling is much different than GOT ( GOT is character driven story, you experience the events with the characters . HOTD is plot driven story it's a live action history book , you watch event after events from above like a history book which unfortunately prevent you to emotionally connect with characters )** * poor Aemma Arryn

I just had one gripe with the episode:

The tournament (melee) was way too violent, it's not supposed to be such a bloodbath of lords and nobles. Propre jousting and melee rules weren't respected and in the Dunk and Egg stories they were. It looked a bit like our stereotypical view of gladiatorial fights (and even these weren't bloodbaths).

Other than that great episode!

I didn't think it was possible to make such a great pilot, most people can't finish watching the first episode of GoT but the HotD pilot was just perfect and masterfully done, the universe is correctly built, there are enough action scenes and "talking" scenes and the pacing is great.

Overall I loved it very much I give it 9 out of 10. I wish they could have spend more time on characters rather than jump to the next event in the plot (like what was Rhaenyra's reaction to her mother's death )

Calm down folks...this is only the pilot
pepo-4579322 August 2022
It was nothing extraordinary. The characters are still being developed. GoT was known for its twists and surreal plots. This one is just starting. I read a lot of other reviews and people are going overboard.

We are just watching the 1st hour of a 10 hour movie.

One bright thing is that. Benioff and Weiss, the two individuals that screwed up GoT are not even remotely related to this prequel. This is promising.

Miscast and lazy
Narmer722 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Many characters are cursorily introduced at the same time, many fleshless names are shot at the audience, and nobody has a bit of charisma.

The plot is not only dull, but also unfocused. For example, it would seem there's going to be an important conflict between Daemon Targaryen and Ser Criston Cole, but that is very sloppily prepared. And if there won't be any conflict, Daemon's defeat in the tournament is pointless.

Another example. The scene of Daemon's killings and maimings is poorly conceived: we are told the victims are criminals, but we haven't seen any public disorder or unlawful behavior.

One more example. The sore in the king's back should be supposed to mean something ominous, but there's no sense of foreboding and the scene is wrapped up carelessly.

One last example. What is the idea behind Alicent's night visit to the mourning king? Beside the fact that such a visit is outlandish, does it imply something sexually charged? We would have expected so, but the scene leads nowhere. Sure, the widowed king may well marry Alicent later on, but are we presumed to believe that she opened up the path to the marriage by striking him with her compassionate soul?

To sum up, nothing more than a botched attempt at resurrecting Game of Thrones.

A Step Above Game of Thrones
RGKeith21 August 2022
Yes, there is a multitude of characters, just like in GOT. But what HOTD does better is convey a lot of information about the characters and who they are in a natural way.

This episode is well written. It spans several years, but somehow stays focused. There are highs and lows: there's a lot of grandeur and heartbreak, and of course, dragon.

The acting has never been a strong suit for GOT. But in this episode, we're introduced to a strong ensemble with mountains of chemistry. I'm eager to see more.

This may appeal to the Crown and Succession crowd, though, more so than those wanting acting and fast paced adrenaline rushes, though if it's anything like the books, those scenes will come.
