Alternative Therapies In The Jungle
atlasmb8 September 2020
Self-reflection unlike anything Thoreau ever conceived of is the purpose of this reality show. A group of individuals travels to a remote location in Costa Rica where they confront their emotional problems with the assistance of a team of alternative healers.

This process might be termed "New Age", for it features non-traditional modalities like reiki, meditation, and the use of sweat lodges. The term "non-traditional" belies the fact that many of these techniques predate Western medicine.

Each visitor has defined the issues he wishes to resolve. By attending the retreat, he has---to some degree---bought into the viability of the process, which itself increases the probability that the retreat will help him.

On the other hand, the practitioners often use terms like "magic", and they discuss astrology and auras like they are established science.

This is not so much entertainment as it is instructive for the viewer who can identify himself in the various neuroses and relationship problems. In attendance, for example, are a mother and daughter who have trouble living their own best lives because they spend so much energy dealing with each other. This is something people can identify with.

The first season has not ended yet, but I expect some attendees to leave the resort happier than when they arrived. Taking oneself out of the familiar environment and focusing on personal issues, uninterrupted, for days at a time can only help.

The best part of the show is the presence of the lead "therapist", Chrissie, who is able to cut through the b.s. and keep everyone on the track to better health. Without her, the show would be rife with division and personal power trips.

When all is said and done, the motto might be "own your own -it." That is easy to say, but not so easy to do, with our subjective views of ourselves and our collections of baggage and habits.

This is where the world ends

This is what happens when you get a bunch of the most ignorant, yet confident, people together to stare at themselves in the mirror and love what they see. New age bs, pseudo-Christianity, special foods, and more bs than you'd find at a cattle ranch. Just move along. If you're between 25 and 40, you already know these people.

Irresponsible!
drunvalo-4748818 September 2020
As a healer myself, I had high hopes for this show, particularly that it might illuminate various alternative and holistic healing modalities, bringing them more into the mainstream. Sadly, it feels like it has done just the opposite - highlighting new age cliches, unskillful facilitators, sloppy process, all in an unstable and emotionally unsafe container. It's TV, so I'm not sure what the participants were told ahead of time, but my heart cringes when I see them pushed to open their wounds and bare their souls in such a setting. I imagine many of them may need more healing after participating in this show. Superficial at best, irresponsible at worst. Sadly, a disservice to other healers who work in this realm.

Pretentious, self-absorbed narcissists. And really bad editing.
TripleAAardvark8 March 2021
I was attracted to this premise: people on a journey of self-discovery. Unfortunately, that is not this show at all. The participants come across as fake actors, mostly concerned about their external appearance. And the editing and interviews give you basically zero insight into the actual problems they have. It's vague mumbo-jumbo from everyone. I'm only giving it 2 stars because of the bountiful décolletage on display.

Great new show!

I loved every moment of this show. Perhaps some of the negative reviews have too do with not understanding where the healers were coming from. As a Hypnotist and Reiki Master, I did understand and felt that the show was well done and kept my interest 100% of the time. I truly hope that the powers that be will give this show another chance. It is a winner!

Pretty good, for a 'reality' series...
IdaSlapter17 September 2020
Reviewer 'BigTrain45' is completely missing the big picture, I'm guessing because it doesn't agree with his or her antiquated 'Christian' views of the world, but this isn't 'New Age' stuff at all. This healing work is based on Reiki and other alternative healing modalities that pre-date Christianity by thousands of years. Instead of going to church and pretending everything is okay, they're coached to stop running from their problems and address them.

But what I like about the show is it doesn't feature the heavily scripted -- and thus highly predictable -- stock characters, typically wanna-be actors looking for their 15 minutes of fame.

For the most part -- with perhaps the exception of the Christine (with eyelashes about four times the size she should wear) and her gossipy mother Robin -- these folks seem genuinely just along for the ride, to see how it might actually help them. And some, especially the lutheran minister, seem to be finding that benefit.

I also like how there's no scripted/forced love triangles, none of the crap you get from Big Brother and other shows that are even less watchable.

Give it a try, you might just like it.

Cultural Appropriation

Will never understand the need to steal aspects of other cultures for craps like this show and call it alternative therapy. Smdh

Annoying and self indulgent
yukiusa24 September 2020
I understand the need for people to have periods of self healing in their life but I can't watch the constant wailing and screaming and crying that goes on. I am not sure who wants to watch this. I thought it would be a bit more helpful to the viewer but it's just watching people break down and I can only eye roll so long before I had to turn the channel

Entertaining
wolfmoongal26 September 2020
Despite the low ratings I'm seeing for the show, I actually really enjoyed it! I was excited for new episodes. I only wish the retreats were longer and that there were more episodes.

I really enjoyed it
godsmuse111 March 2021
Yes, some of the people think they are "all that", and they have issues just like the rest of us. It was refreshing to see them getting help outside the box of doctors, pills and hours of sitting in a room spilling your soul to a therapist. I think they are brave to air their souls in front of strangers, much less on national tv. I think the people who didn't like it, saw way too much of themselves in the participants and don't want to face their own reality. From a natural healers point of view, I didn't agree with all the modalities used. Then again I was not there, I didn't see behind the scenes, nor do I know the participants off screen selves. The show did give us pretty good, in depth detail of their lives in the small amount of time. They weren't forced to do anything (which is part of natural healing) but they were encouraged to participate and work through the uncomfortableness of it all. After all, that's how we heal. It was nice to see how different healing techniques could work in a world that wants us to be cookie cutter humans. Again, I didn't agree with them all but it was nice to see the results. I think it's a nice show and if done right, could go many seasons. Sorry, I forgot to mention all the eye candy throughout. 😉

Loved this show
loriwolf-5135411 May 2022
I came on hoping to see that there will be a season 2 and I am so surprised that so many people seemed to not like it, or even hated it. This is one of those shows that I actually got excited before it came on. I loved that it had both people that I genuinely liked (the minister who lost her baby), as well as those I loved to hate (especially that mother). The "love to hate" people always make a reality show fun. Based on these reviews, unfortunately I don't think that there will be another season, and I'm really bummed about that.
