For the first time in a while, Netflix is adding no new titles today, so let’s instead take the opportunity to recap what’s gone up on the streaming site over the past week, from Saturday, August 1st to Saturday, August 8th. As that encompasses the first day of the month, there was a huge amount of fresh content added to Netflix’s library over this period. To be exact, there were 49 movies and 24 TV shows.
On the film side of things, this haul includes many an acclaimed or cult favorite flick from across the decades in all kinds of genres. The highlight is probably the entire Jurassic Park trilogy, which has proved popular with Netflix users as the first two entries have been hanging around the top 10 most-watched movies list almost ever since arriving. 80s classic fantasy flick The NeverEnding Story and its sequel were added on the 1st as well,...

This could be a really fun match up. THR is reporting that John Cena will join Jackie Chan in an upcoming action thriller to be directed by Need For Speed's Scott Waugh. Cena is reportedly replacing Sylvester Stallone who was slated for the role. Under the working title of Project X, Chan is playing the role of a security contractor who is called to the Middle East to extract workers from the Chinese-run oil refinery when it comes under attack. He teams up with an American and former Marine, played by Cena, when he learns that the attackers intend to steal a fortune in oil. Arash Amel (Erased and The Titan) wrote the screenplay. From the description above it sounds like it has borrowed elements...

Chicago – Opening Night at Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc) Season Six was extra exciting on March 13th, 2018, as popular Japanese film star Yuki Furukawa came to the Windy City to represent his starring role in the magical romance “Colors of Wind.” The film, a co-production of South Korea and Japan, was directed by Kwak Jae-yong and co-starred Takemi Fujii.

“Colors of Wind” is a highly romantic film about the “doppelganger,” the notion of twin souls in the world. In this case, it is Furukawa portraying Ryo, a heartbroken man who has lost his lover Yuri (Fujii). Before she left, she spoke of going to Hokkaido, a wintry town in Northern Japan. There Ryo finds Aya (also played by Fujii), who is an exact twin of his lost love, but she has lost a lover of her own.

The first film set I ever visited was for John Carpenter’s Starman. I was 13, and the film was shooting just outside Chattanooga, Tn, where I lived at the time. When I was leaving the set at the end of the day, the unit publicist (the great Peter J. Silbermann) gave me a copy of the script by Bruce A. Evans & Raynold Gideon and Dean Riesner, the first actual film script I ever read. It could have been anything I read first, but I’m glad that as I started try to break down structure and character and the crazy magic trick that is writing words on a page that then come to life on a film set, it was that script which I was studying. It’s a lovely piece of writing, and there’s a reason Jeff Bridges got nominated for an Oscar playing the lead role of...

Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy is on the verge of helming Columbia Pictures’ Starman remake, based on the John Carpenter sci-fi classic of the same name.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, it’s understood that the studio has drafted in Arash Amel (Erased, Grace of Monaco) to pen the screenplay, shifting the tale into the modern era. Michael Douglas, meanwhile, is attached to produce alongside Levy after working on the original more than three decades ago.
First released in 1984, Starman orbited around the story of a mysterious alien that responds to Nasa’s far-flung spacecraft Voyager II. After careering into Earth with the intention of paying a visit, the extra-terrestrial assumes the form of a woman’s dead husband, eventually directing her toward a strange rendezvous site before it perishes. Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen anchored the ’80s feature, with the former earning an Oscar nomination at the time...

If Jeff Nichols' excellent "Midnight Special" spurs Hollywood to make more Amblin-esque, '70s/'80s era science fiction that's as big on character as it is concept, that would be a great thing. However, the industry is still in the business of redos, so while getting an original concept like Nichols' picture made will still likely involve jumping through a lot of hoops, Hollywood is just going to do another version of John Carpenter's "Starman." Read More: The Essentials: 7 Great John Carpenter Movies THR reports that Shawn Levy, the guy behind "Night At The Museum," "Real Steel," and the "Pink Panther" remake, will helm the picture. Arash Amel ("Erased," "Grace Of Monaco") will pen the script that follows an alien from another world who takes the form of a woman's dead husband and falls in love with her, all while on the run from the government. It's high-concept stuff,...

Screenwriter and producer, Arash Amel, who wrote Erased and Grace of Monaco, claims to have some interesting intel regarding the Wonder Woman solo film set up at Warner Bros. According to what he knows, WB has hired six screenwriters to write six separate scripts for the film. The idea behind it would be for the studio to pick the best script or several elements from the scripts for Michelle MacLaren to direct.
Is this the best idea for WB to get the best possible Wonder Woman movie? I think it's kind of a messy way of doing things, and Amel also goes on a crazy rant about the way the studio is handling the film's development. He seems pretty pissed off, and you can read his series of tweets regarding it below.

Producer/screenwriter Arash Amel, who wrote Erased and Grace of Monaco, and is currently scripting the Marie Colvin biopic has shared on Twitter that he's heard an intriguing bit of gossip regarding WB's Wonder Woman movie. Reportedly, Warner Bros. has hired not one but six screenwriters to write six, separate Wonder Woman solo films. Presumably, WB will then pick the best script or pick the best elements from each for Michelle MacLaren to direct. Amel views this practice with disdain (as any screenwriter should) but as comic book fans, hoping for the best Wonder Woman movie possible, what's your take on this tactic? We've been hearing talks about a Wargames remake going back all the way to 2011 when Horrible Bosses-helmer Seth Gordon was attached to make the movie, but now the film is finally ready to move forward again - albeit with a new writer and director. New reports say that Dean Israelite, the filmmaker behind the upcoming time travel thriller Project Almanac, and Arash Amel, the screenwriter behind the Aaron Eckhart thriller Erased and the upcoming Grace Kelly biopic Grace of Monaco, are now in talks with MGM to start working on the reboot of the 80s techno thriller. The news about the guys taking care of things behind the scenes comes from Deadline, but The Wrap also has info on the actors who are being considered for the lead role, played by Matthew Broderick in the original: Ansel Elgort The first name on the list is Ansel Elgort, who you...

"Is this a game or is it real?" Here we go again. MGM is apparently still intent on remaking the classic 80's computer hacker movie WarGames, and has picked up development again by hiring a brand new writer and director. Since 2011, The King of Kong's Seth Gordon was attached to direct, however the project never seemed to go anywhere (meanwhile MGM's other 80's remake, Red Dawn, flopped). Deadline is reporting that they're "close to signing" up-and-coming director Dean Israelite for the remake, a name we're not yet familiar with has his first film, a time travel sci-fi titled Project Almanac, was delayed from release this year. There's not much known about the WarGames reboot, except that MGM seems intent on finding a way to make it happen (especially in the digital world we live in today). Instead of picking up with Seth Gordon, they're looking at Dean Israelite instead.

Grace of Monaco has had some serious highs and lows, just like its central figure Grace Kelly. But as it approaches its world premiere at the illustrious Cannes Film Festival, the biopic about the movie star turned princess has finally unveiled a meaty trailer that gives a sense of its scale as well as its central drama. Penned by Erased scribe Arash Amel, Grace of Monaco focuses on what Grace Kelly's life was like after she left the spotlight and stardom of Hollywood and stepped into the politics of Monaco by marrying Prince Ranier III. The film picks up in 1962. Film roles in Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window, Dial M for Murder and To Catch A Thief were long behind her. She and Ranier have been married for six years. But Kelly hasn't made a seamless transition from the mansions of Hollywood to castles of Monaco, and struggles to reconcile...

Now with a handful of brightly lit baubles of films to his name since beginning as a music video director, McG can add another title to a mounting filmography that has yet to sport something of a healthy shelf life with 3 Days to Kill. Co-written and produced by Luc Besson, this could technically be considered McG’s foray outside of Hollywood, but many expecting to see something along the lines of Taken—and if that’s what you seek, there may be something for you—then rejoice, as here Liam Neeson is replaced by grizzled Kevin Costner and ham jammed into Paris to reunite with the expat wife and kid he left there due to his career with the CIA. Originally due to be released late last year, in awards contention, Olivier Dahan’s Grace of Monaco is finally going to have its debut at one of the biggest platforms of the year, making its bow at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.

Warner Bros. launched a beautiful first teaser trailer back in September, assuring us that something rather stunning is coming our way soon.

Though he’s usually known for his roles in dramatic or comedic films, actor Aaron Eckhart has been looking to change that in recent years. 2011 saw him star in Battle: Los Angeles and the year after he put out two more efforts in hopes of solidifying himself as a bonafide action lead: Erased and Olympus Has Fallen.
Now, Eckhart is getting ready to release his newest movie, I, Frankenstein, which marks his most physical role to date. In the film, based on Kevin Grevioux’s graphic novel, Eckhart portrays Adam, the creation of scientist Victor Frankenstein. Due to the secret of his immortality, Adam finds himself caught up in a centuries-old war between gargoyles and demons, as each side wants to use him to gain an advantage over the other.

Following in the stellar tradition of Aaron Eckhart.s Erased and Nicolas Cage.s Stolen this appears to be an effort to re-frame an older leading man as an invincible action badass not unlike Liam Neeson in Taken, mixed in with a little Crank just for good measure. Opening on February 21st, this Relativity release sees Costner as a suave international spy looking to get out of the game. But in movies, spies never quit, and his retirement is interrupted by a steely boss (Amber Heard, naturally) who injects him with a cocktail that ensures he.ll die in three days. That is, unless he completes one final high octane-mission, one that sees him pursuing an...

However you spin it, the writing’s on the wall for Lionsgate’s upcoming supernatural action thriller I, Frankenstein. Of course, expectations for the film, adapted from a graphic novel by Underworld writer-producer Kevin Grevioux, were never very high. For one, it’s set for release in the frozen cinematic wasteland of January. Additionally, the film’s first trailer impressed I, Frankenstein‘s visual flair without managing to clarify its convoluted plot or convince me that anything about the film can separate it from similar flicks like Underworld and Van Helsing. Unfortunately, the new poster for I, Frankenstein does little to alleviate my concerns about the film.
From the focus on the film’s CGI creations to star Aaron Eckhart looking out over a Gothic city, everything about this poster screams “Underworld.” And though that series is far from the worst current action franchise out there, it’s certainly not...

Blumhouse Productions, the folks behind James Wan’s “Insidious” and other low-budget/old school horror movies, has its new planned franchise — one about exorcism that will star Aaron Eckhart called “Incarnate”. “Incarnate” would find the former “Dark Knight” star playing “an unconventional exorcist who can tap into the subconscious of the possessed who meets his match when a 9-year-old boy is possessed by a demon from his past.” Eckhart’s certainly got the grizzled face to play an “unconventional exorcist”. And after coming off leading man roles in “Erased” and the oft-delayed “I, Frankenstein”, Eckhart could certainly use a sure-fire hit. These days, you don’t get more sure-fire than the Blumhouse boys, with their miniscule budgets and big-time returns on investments. What's It About? Brian Helgeland's biopic tells the story of baseball great Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman) and the legendary manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford. Rickey made history by breaking baseball's color line in 1946 and signing Robinson, while Number 42 went on to made history on the field.
Why We're In: While Helgeland's film is in no way groundbreaking, it is still a dedicated and endearing tribute to two great heroes of American sports. Boseman, an unknown to the big screen, stands out for his commendable portrayal of Robinson, and Ford gives one of his best performances in years.

It seems like I’ve been writing about “Tomorrow, When the War Began” director Stuart Beattie’s “I, Frankenstein” for the last couple of years. This movie feels like it’s been in production forever, and I’m getting this very bad feeling it’s either going to get dumped onto VOD/DVD when it finally opens next year (after originally being set for 2013), or it’s going to get a very limited release (with only perfunctory advertising) and then dumped onto VOD/DVD. Which, if that happens, will make it star Aaron Eckhart’s second movie to get that treatment, following in the footsteps of “The Expatriate” (which was eventually renamed the very generic “Erased”). Anyways, until we do see something from “I, Frankenstein”, here’s a scan featuring Eckhart as the titular Frankenstein monster in the latest pages of EW. Yeah, not much of a Frankenstein there. Shouldn’t he be,...

Erased
Directed by Phillip Stölzl
Written by Arash Amel
USA, 2013
There’s a few distinct brands of action/thriller movie, and the most popular has always been “They Messed with the Wrong Man” (see also “Normal Guy becomes an Action Hero” and “Waaaarrrrr”) and Erased seems like an archetypal example. From the trailers and other advertisements, it looks like an absolutely hum-drum, boilerplate action/thriller of this mold, but there’s always hope that it’ll turn out to be one of those rare surprises that offers something new or interesting or is at least expertly made. Erased….is not one of these films.
The basic setup is this (stop me if you’ve heard this one): Aaron Ekhart plays Ben Logan, ex CIA badass now working for a company testing security systems in Brussels. Because his wife died of unspecified-itis, Ben’s also raising his tweenage daughter Amy,...

After a weak spring dominated by three indie hits that went wide quickly, "Frances Ha" stands out a potential arthouse success. This film could stay in limited release for a while, unlike quick-breaking multiplex players "The Place Beyond the Pines," "Mud" and "Spring Breakers," which will all likely pass the $15-million mark. Coming on the heels of decent starts for "Stories We Tell" last week in New York, and "What Maisie Knew," and ahead of the anticipated big performance for "Before Midnight" opening next Friday, specialized numbers look to improve to decent levels--even if so far nothing has risen to the levels of last May's major successes "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." Three films for significant distributors failed to report numbers, including Weinstein (its VOD offshoot Radius opened "Erased" with Aaron Eckhart), Ld's 2012 Sundance genre entry "Black Rock" (also VOD), and most significantly Music Box's "Augustine," which received both favorable.

The rare sort of actor who can swing between Harold Hill-type independent film character work and credible, B-list leading man action hero, Aaron Eckhart has, in his latter incarnation, matched wits with aliens, terrorists and the disastrous effects of climate change. So it makes perfect sense that he’d want to tackle a chance to go full-on Jason Bourne. In “Erased,” he plays ex-cia agent Ben Logan, who discovers that his high-tech security job in Brussels has been a sham. Marked for termination, Ben escapes with his teenage daughter Amy (Liana Liberato), and tries to stay one step ahead of his dangerous adversaries while also unraveling a wide-ranging international conspiracy that [ Read More ]

Aaron Eckhart (who’s already had one action hit this year with Olympus Has Fallen) is apparently out to claim Liam Neeson’s mantle: Just like in the Taken films and Unknown, he’s playing an ex-black-ops guy who has to protect/save/find his family in this Europudding action thriller. The title, Erased, even sounds like a Liam Neeson film. (It was originally called The Expatriate, which was presumably nixed because Americans won’t know what the hell an expatriate is.) Five years from now, it’ll be an inevitable source of confusion: “Wait, what was that Liam Neeson movie? Abducted? Disappeared? Vanished? Erased?” “No, dummy, Erased starred that other guy…what’s his name?”I kid, I kid. Actually, for its first half, Erased is pretty solid — absorbing, suspenseful, even poignant. Eckhart plays Ben Logan, an American living in Belgium working for a security company, devising ways to defeat its own security systems.

Some actresses work their way into the public consciousness as much through tabloid shenanigans as any of their actual on-screen performances. Only 17 years old, Liana Liberato is opting for hard work, thank you very much. In director David Schwimmer’s underrated “Trust,” she delivered a stunning turn as an innocent 14-year-old suburban girl lured into a sexual liaison via online chatting — an act with ruinous consequences for her and her parents (Clive Owen and Catherine Keener). In her new film, the “Bourne”-inflected “Erased,” she stars as Amy, the crafty daughter of ex-cia agent Ben Logan (Aaron Eckhart); the two try to escape a contract rub-out and outsmart their hunters [ Read More ]

Mix a dollop of The Bourne Identity, a dash (or two) of Taken, and a pinch of the spy classic Three Days of the Condor (1975), stir it all together, and you get Erased, a thriller whose storytelling ingredients are so familiar that one could watch it with the sound off and still know what's going on. Aaron Eckhart is Ben Logan, a recently widowed private security analyst living in Brussels who awakes one morning to find his office empty, his co-workers in the morgue, and his personal identity wiped away. With his rebellious teenage daughter, Amy (Liana Liberato), in tow, Ben begins dodging assassins. As luck would have it, he's a retired black-ops agent, so, game on. German director Philipp Stölzl proves adept at staging fight scenes in confined spaces,...

Chicago – Two talented stars – Aaron Eckhart & Liana Liberato (“Trust”) – do a remarkable job of finding the depth in paper-thin, clichéd dialogue and generic contrivances but they can’t quite pull “Erased,” now available On Demand and opening in Los Angeles tomorrow, from its B-movie trappings. If you’re a spy thriller fan or love the perpetually underrated (and in need of a better agent) Eckhart, you may be surprised. Everyone else has a better alternative this weekend.
Eckhart plays Ben Logan, a CIA Special Ops agent who has left the world of spydom behind to take care of his daughter Amy (Liberato) and work for a private security firm in Antwerp (the movie was called “The Expatriate” in its international release last year). Before Ben can realize he’s in a Robert Ludlum plot, the company that he works for is liquidated, all evidence that he worked for them...

Just once, it'd be nice if the couple fleeing from a trigger-happy hit man through, say, a crowded hospital, would yell out -- "Run for your lives!" And if the hospital's in Belgium, say, it'd be nice for them to yell it in French.
"Erased" has such a scene, where Aaron Eckhart, as a security contractor whose company, bank records and recent history have been "erased," is fleeing with his daughter (Liana Liberato). And you can't help but feel for the innocent doctors, nurses and patients on gurneys who catch a bullet during the mayhem. Don't they deserve a warning?
"Erased" is a run-of-the-mill "Bourne" imitation in which covert operatives are desperate to tidy up a scheme in which American expat Ben Logan may be the only witness. It's an exposition-heavy thriller with that generic Euro-thriller blue-grey color palette and duller-than-grey villains, all chasing the good guy and his daughter through scenic Brussels and Antwerp,...

Hitting theaters in a limited release this Friday, director Philipp Stölzl's Erased stars Aaron Eckhart, Olga Kurylenko and Liana Liberato in an action-fueled thriller with a script from A.E. Amel. Eckhart plays Ben Logan, a former CIA operative now working as a security consultant in Brussels. Tensions are high between Ben and his daughter, Amy (Liberato), who would much rather be living with her mother. When Ben heads into work one day and finds that every trace of his company has been wiped from existence, both he and Amy become targets for a massive conspiracy that would like nothing more then seeing both Logans dead. ComingSoon.net sat down with Eckhart to discuss his role in the high-stakes thriller and the process by which he and Liberato built a father-daughter bond for...

Aaron Eckhart has quite a diverse body of work to look back on -- in the last two years alone, the actor has brought to the table both a complex portrait of a grieving father in the lauded "Rabbit Hole" and a more workman-like turn in the less-lauded "Battle: Los Angeles." "Erased," also known as "The Expatriate," has been kicking around since fall of last year -- its delayed release has been blamed on piracy concerns -- the film being especially sought out by pirates who would otherwise gorge on blockbusters. This is a good bit of press for a little film, a compact Belgium-set thriller that tweaks the "Taken" formula ever so slightly and lets it rest on Eckhart's capable shoulders. The actor, gaunt but still retaining his good looks, here plays Ben Logan, an expat with a mysterious past. Making a home in Belgium along with estranged daughter (of course) Amy,...

Untaken Legacy: Stolzl’s English Debut a Clunky, Derivate Actioneer
Originally titled The Expatriate, German director Philip Stolzl’s English language debut gets the dumbed down title of Erased, which unfortunately only makes it an easy target for jokes concerning what the film does with your time. While the film manages to avoid being completely asinine, nicely packaged and more smartly written than your general fare in the Taken vein, Stolzl’s film can never quite manage to feel like an original concept, instead feeling like a European tinged, anemic subset of the Jason Bourne franchise.

Director Philipp Stölzl’s “Erased” is certainly not bad. It’s not great, either, mind you, but in terms of sucky cinema, it’s not that. It’s a bit derivative, and aside from the film’s central father and daughter characters played by leads Aaron Eckhart and Liana Liberato, respectively, the film features some stunningly generic and one-dimensional people. Even an attempt to inject humanity into one of the villains comes across as flat and pointless, not to mention tacked on. Go big or go home, boys. They decided to meander instead. As a “Taken”-esque, “Bourne Identity”-ish actioner, “Erased” is not an entirely bad film. Set in and around Brussels, Belgium, the film stars Eckhart as Ben Logan, a former CIA badass (aren’t they all?) who has relocated to the European country to start a new life with his estranged daughter Amy (Liberato). We eventually learn...

He's the president in Olympus Has Fallen, and a fine, fine actor. Aaron Eckhart spared us some time for a chat about his movies...
Note that the following interview contains mild spoilers for Olympus Has Fallen.
When the dust finally settled after the endless casting speculation for Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, there was one name above all others that really fired up my anticipation for the movie: Aaron Eckhart. It’s now been well over a decade since I first discovered his work, and ever since the glorious slice of B-movie joy that is The Core, I’ve remained a steadfast fan, with the diversity in his work always drawing me towards films I would never normally consider. Yet to my mind he still remains very much underappreciated, regardless of his talent and some truly memorable performances amongst some great movies.

The actor certainly likes a good chat – about cigars, women, 70s action heroes, Twitter, self-healing and his new role as a Us president. But he does have a weak spot
Aaron Eckhart's day began as they all do: an hour in the gym, then same again with a cigar. Jetlag cannot disrupt that, snow can throw no spanners. "I was outside at 6am smoking with my hood on, watching everyone come to work, freezing my ass off. That's how dedicated I am."
Then breakfast, another cigar, four hours of interviews and lunch in his room, Moby on the deck, steak on the plate. "I ordered it medium rare. I got it medium beyond." Did he finish it? "Oh yeah, every little bit. I am a carnivore." Then another cigar. He'd like to be puffing on one right now. At least three more will get sucked before he sleeps.

Spring Breakers (18)
(Harmony Korine, 2012, Us) Selena Gomez, James Franco, Gucci Mane. 94 mins
The new American dream/nightmare of the endless beach party is both celebrated and satirised in Korine's woozy Florida tale. The story is fittingly loose – four naive teens turn to criminal means to fund their hedonism – but it's more of an experience: a dubstep-tracked collage of neon, Day-Glo and tanned flesh, all facilitated by Franco's fantastically watchable gangsta rapper.
A Late Quartet (15)
(Yaron Zilberman, 2012, Us) Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener. 106 mins
A respected New York string quartet is struck by an excess of issues here: terminal illness, infidelity, professional jealousy, you name it. Without the distinguished cast, its highbrow melodramas would seem ludicrous.
