To paraphrase former White House Chief of Staff Tom Card, whispering in the ear of George W. Bush: a second Cronenberg offspring has made a movie. Whereas her older brother Brandon Cronenberg has more openly sought to replicate the visceral, satirical body horror of their father’s earliest work, offering some delightfully nasty thrills with the likes of Antiviral and Infinity Pool––even as he remained comfortably within his dad’s shadow––Caitlin Cronenberg couldn’t be accused of simply conforming to the expectations that come with her family’s brand-name recognition. The biggest surprise with her directorial debut Humane might be just how comfortably this could sit alongside Blumhouse and Screen Gems shlock at your local multiplex: a well-engineered, single-location thriller that prioritizes bloody, gut-punch twists and turns over the more thoughtful introspection that typically accompanies this in a Cronenberg effort.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first. We previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy, who was recently seen on season 2 of The White Lotus, and now Deadline reports that Fahy is being joined in the cast by Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson. Deadline notes that child actor...

Jason Blum now has his hands on The Blair Witch Project, and a big screen reboot is on the way: more here.
By this stage, we can tick the popular horror franchises off as they take their place in the reboot queue. At the time of writing, The First Omen is in cinemas. We’ve had Scream reboots, a new Salem’s Lot is (finally) on the way, and decisions are being made as to the next direction for The Exorcist. Now? Let’s add The Blair Witch Project to the pile, a series that thus far covers three films, the last of which came from Adam Wingard back in 2016.
Lionsgate and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse company have just been working together on the release of Jeff Wadlow’s Imaginary, and now they’ve inked a fresh deal to oversee a new Blair Witch film. Likely lots of new Blair Witch films.

On the heels of their collaboration on the horror film Imaginary, Lionsgate and Blumhouse today announced that they will partner on the development and production of a new The Blair Witch Project as the first film in a multi-picture pact with Blumhouse reimagining horror classics from the Lionsgate library.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, and Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, made the announcement today.
Based at Universal Pictures, where it has a first-look deal, Blumhouse has generated blockbuster results from a string of modestly budgeted films, including the Paranormal Activity franchise, Insidious, The Purge, Sinister, Halloween, Five Nights at Freddy’s, and M3GAN, along with award winners Get Out and BlacKkKlansman. Blumhouse films have grossed nearly $6 billion at the worldwide box office.
Jason Blum will team with producer Roy Lee on the new The Blair Witch Project; Lee previously produced the 2016 film Blair Witch.

Frank Grillo, who played a tough villain in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, is asking Marvel’s co-president, Louis D’Esposito, for a favor. He wants his character, Crossbones, back in the Marvel movies before he gets too old. The 58-year-old knows time is ticking, so he’s keen to jump back into the role while he still can.

This post contains spoilers for "The Purge" franchise.
2013's "The Purge" introduced an intriguing premise: in a near-future dystopia, all crime is legal for 12 hours once a year, allowing people to indulge in their most violent instincts. Written and directed by James DeMonaco, "The Purge" takes the home-invasion route, where a wealthy family unit finds themselves cornered by a bloodthirsty group of murderers itching to commit crimes without any consequences. The overwhelming success enjoyed by the film contributed to the making of an expanding franchise, with later entries retaining this core concept while introducing new socio-political facets to enliven their narratives.
While it is perfectly acceptable to watch the "Purge" franchise by the order of release date, following this format introduces some chronological issues, as later entries serve as prequels or expand the universe with some ties to the film franchise. Although we will be focusing exclusively on the movies,...

The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

All of the best horror films are traditionally more than just "a horror film." George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" is a zombie movie, yes, but it's also a satire of consumerism and an exploration of how close the crumbling of societal norms is at any given moment. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a masterpiece of practical effects, but it is also a sci-fi body horror film examining themes of paranoia, identity, isolation, fear of the unknown, and masculine hierarchies in survival situations. Despite what naysayers may cry out these days, horror has always been political, but one franchise has consistently been a lot more "in your face" about it.
I'm talking of course, about "The Purge" movies. Created by James DeMonaco and introduced by Blumhouse in 2013 with "The Purge," the films take place in an almost "Twilight Zone" alternate reality of America, where the country enjoys...

"The Purge" and its four sequels represent perhaps the greatest Trojan horse in modern horror cinema.
It starts with that indelible high concept premise: a near-future America run by a totalitarian regime that has seemingly eliminated crime by allowing crimes to be legal for one night a year. Purge Night. A chance for interested folks to work out ... everything they need to work out. But the thinly veiled subtext of the first film — that the Purge exists to allow the wealthy, powerful, and often complacent to systemically wipe out the poor, the disenfranchised, and the non-white — becomes the literal text going forward. Casual horror fans lulled in by a thrilling elevator pitch found themselves watching the angriest, most progressive, and yes, most blatantly political movie franchise of the past decade-plus. Come for the scary masks, stay for the ... civics lesson? Naturally, some fans still insist these movies are just big...

From Robert Johnson’s alleged deal with the devil to Alice Cooper’s monster-filled performances, rock ‘n roll has always had a foot in the horror genre. “The Home” has found a home at Lionsgate, TheWrap has learned. The Santa Monica-based studio snapped up domestic distribution rights to the Miramax horror thriller. Pete Davidson headlines while James DeMonaco helmed the feature. The picture is about a former foster child who begins working in a retirement home. Even though that’s -39% off from Nun 1‘s $53.8M, it’s wonky times with the pic’s lead stars Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid and the studio unable to truly splash this event-wise, etc due to the actors strike. Acclaimed horror production company Blumhouse is bringing two new live entertainment experiences – “The Purge: Dangerous Waters” and “Blumhouse: Behind the Screams” – inspired by some of its blockbuster films, to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, Bloody Disgusting has learned this afternoon.
It’s been a decade since The Purge first declared all crime legal for 12 hours as part of the government’s annually sanctioned Purge and an iconic horror franchise was born. Now, for the first time, “The Purge: Dangerous Waters” takes the blockbuster film franchise into an entirely new environment…open waters, in an all-new live show.

Titled “The Purge 6,” the upcoming horror-action movie is currently in development, and while the release date is yet to be disclosed, fans are eagerly anticipating its arrival.
The film’s screenplay and direction are in the capable hands of James DeMonaco, who has been the driving force behind the entire franchise, having written all five previous movies and directed the first three.
The franchise’s journey began in 2013 with the release of the first Purge movie, which faced negative reviews initially but surprised everyone by claiming the top spot and grossing nearly $90 million on a modest budget of $3 million.
Following its success, three more Purge movies, both sequels and prequels, continued the franchise’s success with impressive profit margins.

The Forever Purge had been marketed as the franchise’s *final* movie, but creator James DeMonaco eventually walked back those statements with the suggestion that he may actually have one more Purge story in the tank. The plan, last we heard? To bring Frank Grillo back as Leo Barnes, his character from The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year.
“I think I’m going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it,” DeMonaco told Daily Dead back in 2021. “Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it’ll be five years after [The Forever Purge], but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore.”
DeMonaco explains to Variety in a new update this week that he finished the script “about eight months ago.

Almost two years have gone by since Purge franchise creator James DeMonaco let it be known that he had an idea for The Purge 6 that would get him back into the director’s chair (after handing The First Purge and The Forever Purge over to other directors) and see Frank Grillo reprising the role of Leo Barnes, the character he played in The Purge: Anarchy and The Purge: Election Year. But as time goes by, it was seeming less likely that this sixth Purge movie was going to happen. Earlier this year, Grillo indicated the shot-callers at Universal and Blumhouse weren’t sure they were going to move forward with this one. But in a new interview with Variety, DeMonaco seems confident that The Purge 6 is going to happen.
Today, June 7th, actually marks the tenth anniversary of the release of The Purge, which is why Variety got in contact with DeMonaco.

Over five low-budget box office hits and a two-season TV series, “The Purge” saga — which portrays a not-too-distant-future America where all crimes, including murder, are legal for one night a year in order to satiate a bloodthirsty public — swelled into a $450 million franchise. But the first chapter was almost never made.
While the film became the defining hit of writer and director James DeMonaco’s career, he says the script was passed over “40-50 times” for being seen as “too anti-American.”
“I had this little, strange, dark indictment of American gun culture,” he said. “I hate guns. To me, the scariest thing in the world would be a night where everyone was armed and it was legal to use these firearms. To me, there was nothing scarier than that notion.”
Ultimately, the film got the attention of super-producer Jason Blum, who “saw something bigger in the conceit,” said DeMonaco. Soon,...

German distributor Dolphin Medien has partnered with U.K. horror production house Red Shadow Studios on horror films based on public domain children’s properties Winnie the Pooh and Peter Pan, it was revealed at the ongoing Cannes film market.
“Winnie the Pooh: Death House,” described by the makers as “The Strangers” meets “The Purge,” is a stylized serial killer slant on A.A. Milne’s beloved character, which recently entered the public domain. The film is written by Red Shadow’s Adam Stephen Kelly and is directed by S.J. Evans (“Dead of the Nite”). The story centres around an unexpected school reunion in a remote country mansion – an event orchestrated by members of a cult who were mercilessly tormented by the guests as children. Now, years later, they’re out for gruesome revenge. Filming is underway at U.K. locations.

It feels like we’ve been waiting ages for Ahsoka, a Disney+ live action series that was first announced in 2020. Finally, we have our first proper look at the show being helmed by Dave Filoni, who is bringing many of the animated characters we know and love to live action for the very first time. That includes Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, and Ezra Bridger, as well as the return of Rosario Dawson as the fan-favorite Jedi warrior, but that’s not all that’s happening on Ahsoka.
As you’ll see in the trailer below, which was released at today’s Lucasfilm Studio Showcase during Star Wars Celebration Europe, Ahsoka is also bringing back quite a bit of Legends stuff to canon. Someone even references Heir to the Empire…

Veteran industrial act Godflesh have announced a new album, Purge, set for release on June 9th. The LP marks the UK band’s ninth album overall, and first in nearly six years.
Godflesh originally formed as Fall of Because in 1982 before changing their name in 1988. They are considered one of the pioneers of industrial metal, and are still led by longtime members Justin K. Broadrick and Ben “G. C.” Green.
According to a press release, “The title alone — Purge — references directly how songwriter and creator Justin K. Broadrick utilizes Godflesh’s music as a temporary relief from his diagnosed autism and Ptsd. It’s the next stage in a journey he has been on since he began creating music, feeling alone and like an outsider in any scene or group, from childhood through to adulthood.”

The Purge franchise started out as a uniquely conceptual suspense-filled horror thriller that was a scaled down, home invasion flick. Then, the sequels started exploring more and more of the concepts that surrounded a dark holiday in which people can act out their darkest desires without legal repercussions. The star of the sequels, and action movie journeyman, Frank Grillo, was kind enough to speak to JoBlo for his latest film, Little Dixie, where he spoke about the possibility of closing out the series.

There have been major changes going down at HBO Max because of Warner Bros. merger with Discovery, and animated titles have been a major casualty. A whole slew of shows were removed from the streaming platform without any real reasoning or warning, and fans were shocked and dismayed. It turns out that fans weren't the only ones blindsided by the loss of these shows, but the creators behind them were completely surprised as well. Many creators took to Twitter to voice their frustration at having their hard work made inaccessible out of nowhere, but one showrunner went a step further. "Infinity Train" creator Owen Dennis shared a lengthy blog post that explained what happened to his series as experienced from the inside.
"Infinity Train" was a wildly imaginative series that helped teach its viewers how to process complex feelings like grief and trauma, and its lessons are vital to young people everywhere.
