Wow!

Brilliant acting, beautiful cinematography, crisp and tight plot. While watching this show, it feels as if nothing gets wasted (in terms of plot). Every small action is important. If you like shows where they show you a small unimportant thing that later turns out to be important, this show is fillied with such scenarios. Grim but also somehow wholesome. It's a show where you'll feel and care for the characters. Every person is important. And the attention to details even in dialog is something that I can't stress enough upon. Take this exchange for example:

Junior: Sir I have a theory, this will work.

Senior: you don't have a theory, you have a hypothesis. You haven't proved it yet, so don't call it a theory.

I mean, the writers and makers have kept so many similar dialogues which other shows won't. They chose to focus on small details without compromising in pace and story. No unnecessary heroism, no melodram, just pure logic and emotions.

I'm on episode 4 and so I haven't even touched my remote. I'll say it again: ACTING & CINEMATOGRAPHY!!! One of the best Indian OTT shows so far. Just marvelous.

An amazing web series to watch
xabirs19 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
After a long time, I found very interesting that, Every cast on this series has a huge role to play. Each and everyone played their role superbly.

The story didn't strengthen and directed very nice and smoothly. The storyline is exceptionally well. We all know that what an pandemic can be and here they make a story about another pandemic which can cause epidemic again. The doctors, police, journalists doing their own job.

The only saddest thing which I didn't liked at all is, Jyotsna shouldn't die like this. Ik they make a very tough ending for viewers but it can be anything but not this. Anyways, a nice web series.

What a wonderful surprise on Netflix
crash3s22 October 2023
This is an intense, wonderfully constructed series that pulls no punches.

Kaala Paani is the smartest and most intense reflection on what happened during the Covid-epimedic with people and those that carry the responsibility to govern them. The story centers around the outbreak of a deadly infection that happens on the Andaman and Nicobar islands, which are a part of India.

The story follows characters on all levels of society. Tourists, that are caught unaware by the epidemic. Doctors that try to fight it. Public officials who try to manage the situation or try to exploit it for their own gains. Corporate executives who try to cover up their role in spreading the disease. A group of natives who play a very special role in fighting the disease.

The writers of Kaala Paani created wonderfully rich and layered characters, each of them with their own meaningful challenges, flaws and abilities. And as a viewer, I was heavily invested and interested in their individual fates.

Kaala Paani has a meta-theme that glues together all these story elements. A meta theme that is introduced with a little side story at the beginning of the second episode: Which decision will you take if there are only bad solutions, you have the power to choose between those bad solutions and whatever you choose, the result of your decision will be the loss of life (the "trolley problem").

Most of the characters we follow - whether they are people in power or everyday people - are confronted at some point in time with such a decision, some of them even more than once. And in Kaala Paani those decisions have stark consequences. People we viewers might assume are "save", because they are essential for the story will die. The actions of seemingly unimportant side characters might have ripple effects that can change the whole scenario.

In short: Wonderful story telling :-)

Side note: As someone who has never been in India, I highly enjoyed this small window into Indian culture and society that is given by this series. Thanks a lot to the creators and writers of this story.

Final Verdict: Watch this series if you enjoy intense and gripping character drama that centers around the outbreak of a deadly disease and is set up on a beautiful island archipelago.

Cinema as an Art

This is one of those works wherein makers are not actually behind making it big in Bollywood and running behind box offices and hundreds of crores. This is pure hard work, talent and most importantly the makers understand that the people of country understand good and special content. Not that we havent watched a series or movies based on communicable or contagious diseases, but this one is special, it is commendable the way it has been executed. Kudos to all the characters in the Series, all are awesome. From TVF's short videos to This amazing work, you guys have come far and doing a good job.

Best Indian series ever made!
UmeshAditya23 October 2023
Must must must watch!! What a brilliant conceptualization!!! Survival of the fittest - Wanna understand it? Watch it, the best fiction writing ever. A story that revolves around epidemic similar to COVID. The last 2 episodes are intense emotional roller coaster. You will see all facets of human lives in this. You will only end up wondering what did I watch? It hasn't yet ended n can't wait for the second season. An impeccable storyline with intense depth characterization. Everything about this is a top notch. Don't miss this. You will only end up craving more n more for it. My ratings 10/10!!!

Master piece
amiyagangopadhyay24 October 2023
Biswapati Sarkar, just look at the number of shows this man has created with his masterful storytelling and screenplay. Nothing feels out of place in the show. Cinematography to acting to background score - everything blends into the story. The small tricks of making an insignificant event significant, at some point later, are not cliched.

A good story makes the viewers emotional without making the characters emotional. Kaala Pani's writing and direction will definitely give you that experience. The acting skills of Sukant Goel, Amey Wagh, Vikash Kumar needs special mention. Good to see Ashutosh Gowariker after so many years. If not for these shows, the acting skills of many of these so called failed Bollywood actors would have gone unnoticed for ever.

Thanks to netflix as I firmly believe Bollywood would never have backed up a project like this. A definite watch.

Brilliant story, Brilliant screenplay, Brilliant dialogues
prajjawalbanati21 October 2023
If I start talking about this series I will not stop praising about it. Everything is so good and properly put down like even the names of the episodes and how they relate with the story, everything is so well connected, presented and written.

We all know the show runners and writers of this series. They are ex-TVF stakeholders and I would say they are one of the best minds out there.

Biswapati Sarkar, Sameer Saxena, Amit Golani you all deserve a big shout out and appreciation. People should realise that actors do not make a film a hit or flop. Its the writers, screenplay, editors, directors who actually create a backbone for a series.

Selecting good actors is always required and the famous ones can be exhempted if you have a good story and this series proves it.

HATS OFF !!!!!!

POSHAMPA PICTURES.

This is by far the best indian series I have watched!!!
dj_jibrel18 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Excellent acting by all characters, very detailed pieces of direction, really can connect to your emotions and feelings while watching. Every scene is interesting. It's has a story which was not screenplayed by any directors.

Its talks about love of a father to his family, a son who is not beneficial to his family, a low inferior complex doc who battles with her fear, a selfish businessman, selfless friend who made sacrifices, lovers who waited for many years to get back together, caste system, indegineous people , sacrifices, survival of the fittest and alot more. All this were very nicely fused together and could not predict the sequence.

It's a must watch indian series. No vulgarities and no intimate scene. Perfect series for adults.

*Can be disturbing especially scenes that will connect with you emotions.*

One simply cannot skip on this..!!
ansh-141981 November 2023
It is by far the most remarkable show of 2023 that i have seen. Not for once it felt like a fiction, it was like witnessing a real life event that was unfolding before my eyes. Characters were not acting, they were living it. But out of all the characters brilliant performances, my heart goes to Santosh Salva played by Vikas Kumar for personal reasons. The depiction of struggles that a common man faces while dealing with such situations just couldn't get anymore realistic. His character arc and transformation from a loving and timid father into becoming something he thought he was never capable of, a RUTHLESS SURVIVOR..!! Doing whatever it takes to be alive and keeping his family safe is simply impeccable. Actors bring versatility by playing different roles, Vikas made it happen by Santosh Salva..!! A rising star indeed..!! Truly amazing performance and a must watch..!!

Start is ok, mid is good and then it drops dead.
sonusingh-zeus29 October 2023
The first episode was just bearable. From 2nd episode it becomes little bit interesting and then at last two episodes it just drops dead. It concept had a great potential but lost the opportunity.

The characters are somewhat unlikeable. You will never able to find a character you can relate to or fall in love with. The acting is great to worst at times. Storyline is something that can keep you on a hook that to ruins it at the end otherwise there is nothing else going on for the series.

Only watch if you have nothing else to watch and want to just pass the time. Could have been a easy 9 out of 10 but it deserves 6.5 out of 10.

They know the science.
laveenabachani21 October 2023
A bingeworthy show, with great cast and amazing direction. What I love the most ka they got the science correct. Especially around the gene theory. Great dialogues. A lot of the comic reflects the TVF shuttle comedy.

Some flaws were food chain stuff they said. Small animals don't die first. Food chain exist all at once. Nothing comes before or after. We exist all together. Another point was you don't detect compounds like peptides under Microscope.

But overall worth watching indian series after long time. Another hit from panchayat creators. More power to posham pa films. I will wait for second season.

Not an easy watch
dseemalhar22 February 2024
It's a survival drama.

When a mysterious illness descends upon the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a desperate fight for survival collides with a race to find a cure.

Well written story, screenplay and characters. Cinematography is good. Everyone performed well.

Mona Singh in 1st episode is 1st class, good to see Ashutosh Gowarikar as an actor, Sukant Goel n Vikas Kumar done exceptional job. Amey Wagh is as always good specially in the last episode, when he realized, he is in love, that was hilarious.

This series is drak, ominous and not an easy watch. I think, it'll come back with 2nd season.

Makers have attention deficit
rammanoharrai30 October 2023
Setting is Andaman and new type of disease. You would expect the film makers to focus on ecology and disease. But the makers of series can't save themselves to touch upon every problem that exist on earth. Too much emotional drama. And science is lol. Poor understanding of evolution. No one gets genetic immunity by consuming stuff but they get it by mutation enabling not dying due to disease. I see a golden opportunity to introduce the unique Andaman tribal and their issues missed. Ecological impact of development is handled haphazardly. Characters development is hahazard. Some of the actors have poor acting skill.

Best writing
vnaveen-402614 December 2023
I have to say " This story is the best , we're like reading an fantasy book but with the real situation". The great thing about this series is writing , and the screenplay , It keeps the spectators to wonder , what gonna happen next , and That is the best part here, The director handled the characters very well and Each of them Nailed It . It does have Twist , turns and plots , which is very well scripted and they have done it without any issue . The dialogue are well written. And Last but not the least , the Cinematography , the whole series was travelling in an Island , and they have showed some wonderful Shots and some of them are mindboggling. I would suggest Please take your notes and add this series to your list . Please must watch it also delivers how people are selfish nowadays. They haven't done yet , the next season is coming soon , and I hope , they will not let down this hype.

Brilliantly written must watch
krushna-patle19 October 2023
The story about an epidemic on the island and the survival of the people. They made the story very well and each one done their part beautifully. How humans can never change their greed and do anything for their survival explain well. Each character got interlinked well with progress of series and you never know what will happen. No one is the hero of the story everyone of their part to play in series. It shows how the inner human animals came into picture when the person care about himself and his family. The Switch. Who will you save 4 hundred or millions. The conservation and human encroachment shows very well. Must watch. Hope they will make next season soon.

One of the best from India
Abhinavamber3 November 2023
The show has everything going for it. Didn't expect too much from the looks of its trailer, but word of mouth brought me to it.

The actors, the writer and above all the director, all of these guys have performed geniously (Every Single One Of Them).

Sukant Goel and Vikas Kumar deserve Oscar's for what they did on screen.

The show is directed on international standards, can easily compete on World level with all the great netflix shows out there.

Thanks to Sameer Saxena and Amit Golani have for creating this, to Elevate the standards of Indian blockbuster series.

Kudos to the complete team.

What makes Kaala Paani different from others?

Its not predictable. No idiotic surprises that does not goes with the flow of the film, but naturally drawn around the subject, that has a very true possibilities of happening.

Amazing story plots, amazing acting by the actors. After some time, you fill feel like its a documentary that has real life characters. Its that real when it came to acting. Amazing cast, and its so good to see that we are finally here, where we act and show films with maturity and keeping reality in check.

Its a must watch!

Dark, Haunting, But Beautiful
Tira-Yashi29 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Imagine someone who was the main head of comic sketches like 'Barely speaking with Urnabh' and wrote and created TVF shows mainly dealing with comedy and slice of life dramatic moments, decided to go completely dark and create one of the darkest human survival series ever, forget just being most darkest in India. Yup, this is literally coming from team of TVF, the writer Biswapati Sarkar, show runner Sameer Saxena and producer Saurabh Khanna! No wonder this isn't a TVF production but Posham Pa Pictures after the split. Kaala Paani, set in Andaman Nicobar is easily amongst the best series made in India yet.

In this year itself we've seen many terrific series coming out, be it Asur 2, Scoop, Jubilee, Farzi, Guns n Gulaab, Aspirants sequel and spin offs, now Kaala Paani. Biswapati Sarkar has taken a complete dark turn and wrote something forget from TVF guys making this, even Anurag Kashyap couldn't think of making something so depressing. The lightest and perhaps most TVF part of this series was its first episode, with some gags around and then the gags disappear and everything else gives us COVID lockdown feel, except in an island and caused due to water issues. The LHF bacteria symptoms also seemed horrifying, to the extent it freaked me out whenever someone had hiccups or even looking at water how terrifying it would be. Only major plot hole I could say was why didn't they show what would happen if the water was boiled.

Nevertheless the dark and Ominous atmosphere put everyone in terrifying situations, almost every character had a dark back story, some of the part seemed unnecessary and some characters were sidelined which too should've been avoided. Nevertheless other parts were beautifully shown, especially the Oraka Tribes and the faith they have, why they're worshipped and what happens to them in the end was truly unexpected. But what really stands out besides Andaman and Oraka tribes are the characters complexity portrayed. You could feel for some characters, despise others and some places even question for such minor actions can cause major consequences. The cinematography and setting might give some people a reference of Dark, the grounded approach and unimaginable situations for the protagonists, except unlike Dark that takes sci fi turn this one remains as grounded and humane approach as possible. Another thing that stands out is the social message, saying in the end it's the Nature and Humanity that will win over everything. Also flipping the switch analogy even gives us a choice what would we do, a bad decision or lesser bad decision. The themes were beautiful.

Performances wise almost everyone did a pitch perfect job, it was all about how characters were treated. Mona Singh was the Main Character in this series, whatever anyone says just for one episode she deserves at least best actress nomination. Yes I said one episode because she was given a Ned Stark treatment in this Kaala Paani, except it happens in first episode itself! The world was shocked seeing Ned Stark die in first season of GOT, Mona Singh's death is even more shocking killing her in first episode itself! While Mona Singh was developed as the lead, doesn't mean any other character gets side lined later on, as every other supporting characters take center stage and become the leads. If Mona Singh is Ned Stark of this show, Vikas Kumar as Santosh Savla is the Walter White to Heisenberg, except in lesser timespan even more extreme. Reason because in the start of the series Santosh was afraid of asking for water in the plane, the introvertness was relatable especially coming from my own experience or getting publicly humiliated by your own son. Just because of someone else's selfishness Santosh finds himself in worst situation possible, losses his wife Gargi(Sarika Singh another great but short performance), loses his innocence, from pure vegetarian to killing a snake just to eat its egg and then finding himself cremating his own son not as his father, the character arc went even more menacing and killed the very person who saved his children's life. While Santosh goes through the most depressing and horrifying situation, Vikas' acting was commendable as well, watch out for the scenes when he cries his heart out, or a heartfelt scene with his son Gucchu who hates being called that and prefers Parth, knowing his wife is going to die, to learning of Parth's death, to finally getting to see his daughter Kaddu and finally killing Jyotsna, the arc was deadlier than Bre Ba did. The other best written character was Sukant Goel's Chiranjeevi, how he was introduced as an extremely flawed character, even in dire situation seeking to extort money from Savla family to seeing his friend die, later learning about Oraka tribes and then his own origins and why his family dedicates their life to Oraka. While I was satisfied by his character getting complete arc, I wish there were more scenes of his and his brother Vineesh, who deserved more scenes with Jyotsna as well. Coming to Arushi Sharma as Jyotsna, definitely she had darkest backstory, some of which seemed unnecessary like divorce part or her friend dying. Maybe her leaving her profession was only sensible backstory needed because it took her only one episode to overcome her inner demons, but her saving Gucchu and Kaddu was heart wrenching as well. While it was needed for Santosh to go full breaking bad, Jyotsna shouldn't have got killed, especially when Vineesh and Ritu were depended on her and the plant later turned out to be Jyotsna's plant she had planted in childhood. The other major character was Ritu, again and unneeded backstory but her being the savior was needed as well, I'm glad Ritu who was almost overlooked and dismissed as junior was improved upon and developed better. The other antagonizing character who changed for good was definitely Amey Wagh as ACP Ketan Kamat, the Marathi police officer who seemingly had a backstory why he turned from good to evil till you realize he can never be a good person and was always villainous. Only if he hadn't bribed his way out for powerful businessmen in this the entire series hadn't had taken place, and how he was the absolute evil guy, till he learns the actual reason for the bacteria to comeback and his change of heart especially for Ritu turned him into positive guy and got himself beaten up. Finally he got his favorite masala jazz flavor was what symbolism really meant. Hated him in the start and loved him in the end. Only problem with Amey Wagh performance was it seemed way too similar to Ritiesh Deshmukh's acting if Ritiesh was young, which shouldn't be a complain but Amey should have his own identity instead of mimicking Ritiesh. Ashutosh Gowarikar, almost had no change in character arc had only one conflicting scene that was the last episode. Not much about him is needed yet his small one dimensional role was good and subtle, yet standing tall. Rajesh Khattar, another one dimensional typical rich evil business tycoon had some meaty performance in last episode when the big reveal comes just to land the helicopter how such a big pandemic broke out was unimaginable yet seemed to make sense due to how COVID came out. Sarika Singh as Gargi, Poornima Indrajith, Chinmay Mandlekar and other supporting cast having smaller roles but leave impact one important scenes

There were many performances that I might've missed to mention, especially cast from Oraka Tribes, they all were short but exceptionally well. Kaala Paani has some plot holes but it is definitely the amongst best series made this year. Going with 8/10.

Chock-full of scientific misinformation
NewYorkDude22 October 2023
This series is full of scientific misrepresentations and misinformation. For example:

* Throughout the series, they use plastic masks. The speaker's voice too is muffled as a result. Why even use masks at all?

* Peptides aren't suddenly inherited just because they were obtained from a plant for generations.

* Extracting CSF doesn't even require entering the brain, and is mostly safe. It is extracted from the spine. Certainly this procedure won't kill anyone.

As an aside, the series kept dragging on the story at a glacial pace that was too slow to maintain interest. I found myself watching at 1.25x and 1.5x speeds, fast-forwarding as I went along, until I ultimately abandoned the series when I lost interest completely.

Entertaining, but acting is poor
sudipan-saha22 October 2023
The series is overall entertaining. The plot is good and nicely brings out the human misery. Furthermore, what makes the series interesting is that it is centered around a pandemic. I expected much more movies and series centered around such themes after the worldwide pandemic that we experienced in the last few years. However, very few has been made. This is one of the very few series that exploits this theme. However, what is definitely missing is a good piece of acting. Most actors seemed amateur and series is full of overacting. This makes it often boring to watch. Would have been better if the series would have ended in 1 season.

The storyline, set in the year 2027, explores societal changes and governmental responses post the COVID-19 era, presenting a reflection of our current times.

The series boasts some of the most well-crafted and complex characters in recent memory. Each character is multi-dimensional, making the audience question their allegiance and keeping them engaged throughout. The portrayal of characters like Ketan Kamat and Santosh Savla is particularly captivating.

The series delves into deep societal issues, addressing the inner workings of government, law enforcement, healthcare, and capitalism. Kaala Paani showcases adept filmmaking techniques, especially in editing and cinematography. The series manages to balance visual storytelling creatively, oscillating between past and present seamlessly. The pacing is spot-on, ensuring every episode remains engaging.

The cast delivers stellar performances across the board. Amey Wagh, Sukant Goel, Mona Singh, Vikas Kumar, Arushi Sharma, and others bring their characters to life convincingly. Each actor contributes to the overall impact of the series.

While it may have a slow start, Kaala Paani ultimately delivers a compelling narrative that engages viewers on multiple levels. It is a must-watch for those seeking a thought-provoking and well-executed medical drama with a societal impact.

Good drama but unrealistic and without logic
nakul-mohan449127 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The series has a good drama but there is no connection to reality when it comes to fighting a disease. In fact the side stories and drama are the main priority of the series. Finding a cure is like 10th on the list of everyone's priorities Also seems like India and rest of the world just abondons the whole island and let them die and everyone fate depends on two doctors who can't agree on basic things and a private company with more power than the whole country.

Frankly it started with a lot of potential but it seems like they have added tragedy, drama and hopelessness just for the sake of it. And that's what makes the series mediocre at best.

Netflix on its peak!
chawlachawla-6851523 October 2023
This series is captivating on so many levels and layers of human emotions and philosophy that even expressing that isn't easy in words.

First of all, there is no "one" main character, rather all character give a significant weight to the story.

The character development graph of IPS Ketan without powerful dialogues or impressions, the encapsulation of casteism, importance of tribal communities in helping maintain the balance with nature and their tradition generational tangible knowledge, the attention to detail to each and every word in every dialogue, the policy complications reflected, and most importantly , the porytrayal of survival instincts of Santosh as a human and the parental instincts of a human, driven back to animals, going to unrecognisable depths to save their offsprings, risking everything else. The careful use of personification of human emotions, everything about this piece of content satisfied me as a viewer inside out. The touching of story on capitalistic interests, administrative delicacies, environmental complication, their relevance, and most importantly the unwinding of story in such a complicated but highly immersive way is what makes this best so far i have seen in 2023. Despite some minute loopholes about medical standard procedures chosen to contain a waterborne bacterial disease exactly same as an airborne viral one, this is a MUST watch for all those who admire dark themes of human characterism.
