It’s rare for a studio to become a brand, but A24 has managed it. Since its humble beginnings as a New York-based distribution company founded by Daniel Katz, David Fenkel, and John Hodges in August 2012, A24 has become synonymous with quality for film lovers, the place that releases the must-see indies everyone is talking about.
A24’s first film was the little-seen and little-loved “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” from Roman Coppola, which hit theaters in February 2013 to muted fanfare. But the movie that really put the company on the map was “Spring Breakers,” Harmony Korine’s wild crime comedy that hit theaters in March that same year and established many of the conventions fans associate with the brand: artful neon cinematography, shocking content and stylized violence, and cool-kid cleverness suffused in every frame. That’s not to say every movie that the company distributes...

It is a rare thing when just the studio attached to a movie can get butts in seats, but that is just what Independent Film Company A24 has done since they were formed in 2012. From humble beginnings with the Roman Coppola directed A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III to break out hits like Ex Machine and The Witch. More recently the studio became the first one to ever sweep the top six awards at this past years Oscars when their films Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Whale took home Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. As their latest film Talk To Me continues to put up impressive numbers at the box office, we wanted to know: What A24 releases has been your favorite? We compiled a pretty comprehensive list, but if you don’t see your favorite listed,...

In the slew of awards season events that have enshrouded “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert in recent months, a grinning, bespectacled face often lingers on the sidelines. That’s producer Jonathan Wang, the Daniels’ close confident for the past 11 years, and the third nominee for Best Picture alongside the filmmakers.
While the success of the multiverse movie has positioned the Daniels as Hollywood disruptors, the key role that Wang (pronounced “Wong”) has played in guiding the quixotic storytellers to such an unexpected outcome has been less scrutinized. “I do think that oftentimes I’m just like the third leg of the Daniels wheel,” Wang said in an interview with IndieWire over Zoom this past week. “It’s definitely been a long road.”

While writer-director Wes Anderson deserves the credit for his chain of impressive features — and his latest, the stop-motion “Isle of Dogs,” marks one of his most vividly charming — he has long relied on a man whom Anderson calls his “Swiss Army knife”: screenwriter Roman Coppola. Anderson and Coppola’s collaboration led to their Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for “Moonrise Kingdom,” but Coppola’s contributions are often lower key; Anderson said he often relies on Roman to keep him on track.
“Roman and I have worked together for many years on an awful lot of movies,” wrote Anderson in an email, “first on ‘The Life Aquatic,’ where he shot numerous strange and complicated shots. Then ‘The Darjeeling Limited’ which we wrote with Jason [Schwartzman]. Then on ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ Roman helped me sort of find a story that I had somehow completely lost track of — and we then dreamed up the whole rest of the movie together.

Hollywood is soulless. Everyone knows that. A24, a relatively new entertainment company, isn’t, though. That’s not just because it’s based in New York, but because it seems to genuinely care about the movies it’s putting out. Even if you don’t know the name, you’ve likely seen one of the movies the independent studio has ushered into cinemas: Cult hits like Spring Breakers and Swiss Army Man; Oscar contenders and winners like Moonlight, Room, and Amy; and even bombs like Sea Of Trees and A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III.
It was that last film, actually—a forgotten, ill-timed comedy starring a post-meltdown Charlie Sheen—that was A24’s first big get. A new, comprehensive oral history from GQ outlines both this amusing story—Sheen didn’t even show up to the premiere—and the swift rise of the distribution company in...

Let's get one thing straight before we begin. Bill Murray is the King. There are better actors. There are people who have better filmographies. There are even funnier people, although not many. But Bill Murray is, all things, considered, the King. I've dedicated much of the last 45 years working this out scientifically, and I am prepared to finally share the findings with you, free of charge, right here at HitFix. Ostensibly, we're doing this because of this weekend's release of "Rock The Kasbah," but that's just an excuse. The truth is that it's important that we rank all 55 of Bill Murray's film performances, with a special focus on the top 25. We are not including his television work here. There are films on this list we have not seen, but not many. We decided to leave those films unranked, so here is that list: Unranked "The Hat Act" "Pass The Buck: Expo '74...

"Did you know that Bill Murray doesn't have an agent? He just has an 800 number and answering machine." I remember exactly where I was when I heard about how Murray manages his career, just like some people remember when they first heard about Keith Richards snorting his dead dad's ashes. It's one of the best pieces of Bill Murray folklore, right up there with how he's always crashing house parties. But it hasn't helped his work much. Just look at his recent filmography. If you forget about his work with Wes Anderson and flukes like Get Low and Zombieland, it's been a pretty dire stretch since 2005's Broken Flowers — The Lost City, Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, City of Ember, The Limits of Control, Passion Play, Hyde Park on the Hudson, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, The Monuments Men, and his latest, the treacly dramedy St. Vincent,...

In March, Evan Kindley asked a compelling question about musicians and their like-minded descendants: “Why is it that the kids of cult folk musicians (e.g. Kristy MacColl, Rufus Wainwright), often go on to respected solo careers while the offspring of major rock stars (e.g., Jakob Dylan, Julian Lennon) are more often one-hit wonders flashes in the pan?” As Kindley and his responders note, there is no scientific basis in this observation, just a sense that the rules of cultural value apply differently when it comes to the offspring of marginal artistic figures – and, seemingly more often than not, those offspring find success in arenas more conventional than their parents. The world of filmmaking is similarly full of dynasties that produce children who seem to inherit opportunities (if not success) not immediately available outsiders. When the American Zoetrope logo introduces Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, for...

Every Friday, Indiewire's Springboard column profiles up-and-comers in the indie world who deserve your attention. Select profiles will include photography by Daniel Bergeron, exclusive to Indiewire. Today we talk to director Gia Coppola. It seems that at a certain point in the Coppola family you’re given a camera and a typewriter and tasked to go out and make your own film. Gia Coppola is the sixth member of her family to get behind the camera, following grandfather Francis, aunt Sofia, and uncles Roman ("Cq," "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III") Christopher ("Deadfall"), and Nicolas Cage ("Sonny"). It’s quite a legacy to live up to, but the youngest Coppola’s new film "Palo Alto" shows that she’s a talent worth watching in her own right. "Palo Alto" has a similar dreamy quality to Sofia’s "The Virgin Suicides," but it stands out for its strong...

Having the last name “Coppola” doesn't automatically make you a filmmaker of note — Exhibit A: “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” — but first-time writer-director Gia Coppola does the family name proud with “Palo Alto,” a compassionate examination of bewildered suburban teens. Adapting the book of stories by the ever-busy James Franco (who appears here in the supporting role of a soccer coach who gets too involved with one of his students), Coppola doesn't let these kids off the hook for their stupid decisions, of which they make many, but she's not judging them for their...

Coming off the back of his acclaimed sophomore feature, All Is Lost, J.C. Chandor is about to go back behind the camera for his anticipated third film, A Most Violent Year.
Out in Park City, the film market has been heating up in recent days, and one of the biggest companies to make their mark so far has been A24.
The distribution/production company has been very much on the rise since their debut last year with Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, with releases including Ginger & Rosa, Spring Breakers, and most recently The Spectacular Now.
So it should come as no surprise then that they are keen to cement their status, announcing that they have acquired U.S. rights to Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, led by Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.

The most memorable aspect of Sofia Coppola.s Lost in Translation for me is that Bob and Charlotte don.t wear their feelings on their sleeves, allowing audiences to wonder about the other aspects of their lives long after the film is complete. Coppola will be working with another pair of complex characters for her next project, an adaptation of Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father from author Alysia Abbott. The book.s rights were obtained from W.W. Norton & Company by production company American Zoetrope, founded by Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. It.s interesting that the press release doesn.t mention Coppola directing the film, but that she.ll be writing the script with Andrew Durham, a photographer and frequent collaborator with Coppola. She.ll be producing it with her screenwriter brother Roman, who directed the 2012 comedy A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. Considering...

No stranger to the small screen—he’s directed quite a few ads this year along with Arcade Fire’s cool TV special—Roman Coppola is helming a comedy pilot for Amazon and he’s found his leading man. Deadline reports Gael García Bernal—who stars in Jon Stewart’s forthcoming directorial debut, “Rosewater”—will lead the Coppola, Jason Schwartzman and Jason Timbers-written project as “an enfant terrible who’s utterly devoted to his art as a conductor - but also to his image.” Based on the Blair Tindal memoir, “Mozart In The Jungle” will feature “sex, drugs and classical music and shows that what happens behind the curtains at the symphony can be just as captivating as what happens onstage.” Sounds like a spiritual successor to his last feature, “A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III.” At this point, Amazon has only ordered a pilot, which will presumably be.

★★☆☆☆ Roman Coppola, the oldest heir to the family filmmaking dynasty, ventures back into the directing chair, following his debut from over a decade back (2001's little-seen kitsch sci-fi homage, Cq). Unfortunately, on the strength of this follow-up, little sister Sofia has little to fear in being surpassed in the directing stakes. If her films are sometimes criticised for their style of content, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III (2012) is the absolute embodiment of that. Swan (Charlie Sheen, back from the brink it would seem) is a successful graphic artist with his own agency and a penchant for the finer things in life.
Swan's current squeeze Ivana (Katheryn Winnick) has just left him, and so begins a downwards emotional spiral as he reflects on his time with her through a series of vignettes and flashbacks. Ultimately, Swan must confront some ugly truths about himself if he is to...

If you’re reading this out in the Us, then consider me jealous for being able to see The To Do List this month, which more than earns its spot as one of our most anticipated movies of the month.
Promising to be one of the funniest films of the year, the movie features an absolutely stellar cast, with Aubrey Plaza returning to centre stage following last year’s flawless Safety Not Guaranteed and Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III earlier this year.

Roman Coppola has contributed significantly to three Wes Anderson films--as the writer of Moonrise Kingdom and The Darjeeling Limited, and as second unit director on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Darjeeling--and it's clear that those collaborations informed his narrative choices and directorial style for his offbeat and entirely strange drama A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. While the first act of the story is jumbled and takes time to figure out what kind of story it wants to be, the most unclear aspect of the film is whether or not Charlie Sheen's presence in a story about a man who's having a mental breakdown over a lost love feels weird because of Sheen's own recent meltdown or if it's entirely to the credit of Coppola's script and direction that the tangible awkwardness of it all feels so natural. It becomes an enjoyable romp once...

Charlie Sheen has credited his A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III co-star Bill Murray with changing the way he views acting.
Sheen revealed in a promotional interview for the film that he was constantly amazed by the subtlety that Murray brings to his characters.
"He changed the way I looked at the world through his work," the Anger Management actor said, according to USA Today.
"His brain opens up in like six different hatches when they call 'action'... His rhythm is very bizarre.
"You don't know if he's forgotten his line. You're working with him and I've known him for an hour, you don't want him to quit because of you, but you're about to interrupt him seven times in the same scene."
A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III stars Sheen as a ladies' man whose life begins to collapse when he is dumped by his girlfriend.

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, a comedy starring Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray about a graphic artist who goes through a weird breakdown after a breakup with his girlfriend, isn't based on a true story, strictly speaking. Writer and director Roman Coppola, however, was inspired by the real life of a graphic artist by the name of Charles White III. He's not an instantly recognizable name as a poster artist like Drew Struzan, but the two were actually good friends and collaborated together on a special Star Wars poster for the film's rerelease in 1978. The result is one of the coolest Star Wars posters around, and Lionsgate has given us an exclusive clip from the Blu-ray featuring the real Charles White telling the unique story of how it...

Cloud Atlas The Wachowskis and co-director Tom Tykwer tackled some interesting things with Cloud Atlas and it had one of the best scores of last year, but I can't deny the fact I really have no interest in returning to it. The Blu-ray does have a large number of features to explore and perhaps a little more discussion could improve my impression, but after seeing it in Toronto last year, and discussing it there, I'm not sure there is much that could be revealed to change my opinion that much.

With the support of his loyal pals Kirby (Schwartzman) and Saul (Murray) and his sister Izzy (Patricia Arquette, TV’s...

Amidst six-second snippets of blurry concert footage and showcases of your latest meal, the mobile app Vine has infected the film industry with a vengeance. The results have been severely mixed: Oscilloscope "released" their David Cross comedy "It's A Disaster" on Vine last month as part of a promo stunt, Film District has been hankering for audiences' quick (positive) opinion on “Olympus Has Fallen,” and "The Wolverine" teased its first trailer via the new social media toy. Luckily, cousins Jason Schwartzman and Roman Coppola have managed to make something a bit more clever. Fresh off promoting his latest Charlie Sheen-starring feature, “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III,” Roman Coppola has struck quickly again with a brief, simple back-and-forth with Schwartzman. Premiering on Nowness, the clip is entitled “A Quick-Witted Love Letter From Indie Hollywood's Favorite Cousins,” which pretty much suits the results...

In this second part on the color grading of the movie A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, Chris Martin of Spy describes his work to complete the final grade, the workflow, and the color look of the picture. Chris is a senior colorist at Spy, a post house in San Francisco that does both commercial and narrative feature work. Spy is a visual effects house, but they also have their own Di theater. Spy has been owned by FotoKem since 2009. The first half of the grading process is described in: Color Grading A Glimpse Inside the …...

Like most motion pictures, Roman Coppola’s latest film, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III was color graded in a Di theater at a post house. Unlike many films, this final grading only took two days; extensive “pre-grading” was done using Resolve Lite at American Zoetrope’s own facilities, while the final grade was performed at Spy using the full version of Resolve. With color grading taking place in two facilities and by two people, the facilities had to work together to calibrate equipment and create a consistent workflow. In part 1 of this series, VFX artist Ryan Bozajian …...

Love Sick Love is an upcoming horror thriller comedy which comes from director Christian Charles and has quite interesting cast on board. It is the tale of love gone bad, or if you prefer – a complex and suspenseful journey into the darker side of passion (that explaines this loves me not part of the story). Today, we’re here to share the first trailer & poster for the whole thing, hope you’ll enjoy! Christian Charles directed the film from a script written by Ryan Oxford, which centers on a boy meets girl romance that quickly turns into a twisted thriller. In other words, the movie... The first question that comes to mind is: how on Earth did they find time to do this? With Wes Anderson spending most of last year stumping for "Moonrise Kingdom," and now in production on "The Grand Budapest Hotel," while his frequent collaborator and pal Roman Coppola (who co-wrote 'Moonrise') also ushered his film, "A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III" into theaters, it seems they have found a brief window within in which to work together again. The duo paired up to make a short film for Miuccia Prada, and the first teaser promises something expectedly quirky and beautifully designed. French actress Lea Seydoux ("Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," "Sister") takes the lead playing Candy, who will apparently be courted by two very similar looking dudes. Granted, it's a twelve-second teaser, which is barely more substantial than a puff of the perfume the fashion house is selling,...

It was a very good weekend for upstart distributor A24 Films. After a disappointing box office performance from their debut release "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III," A24 released their second and third films this Friday and the numbers ranged from extraordinary ("Spring Breakers") to promising ("Ginger and Rosa"). Both films have notably already outgrossed "Charles Swan III" -- with clearly plenty more where that came from. Let's start with the juggernaut: Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers." A24 very smartly waited until many folks were on actual Spring Break to release the film, which debuted to a lot of buzz at Venice and Toronto last fall, and then got another buzz boost at SXSW last week. It paid off. "A cultural phenomenon was officially launched this weekend," A24's Nicolette Aizenberg said. "The film sold-out shows throughout the weekend in both NY and La where screens continued...

The Intouchables I'm not sure you need to buy it, but I would say you should most definitely see it. The Intouchables is a great movie, that for a while almost made my top ten list of 2012. The film is based on a true story of a wealthy quadriplegic (Fran?ois Cluzet) who hires a young man from the projects (Omar Sy) to be his caretaker. Their relationship becomes the center of the story and it's extraordinarily well done. It's also France's highest grossing film of all-time, pulling in over $420 million worldwide.
Wreck-It Ralph If you want to get into "should haves", Wreck-It Ralph probably should have won the Best Animated Oscar over Brave, but that's just my opinion and in the end it doesn't really matter, it doesn't change the quality of the film and this is a rather good film. I can't say I would consider it a must buy,...

Independent distributor A24 may be less than a year old, but they're already building a clear brand image -- if it's stylish, name-heavy and young-skewing, they're interested. Though they've been making their presence felt with high-profile festival purchases since last fall, but they're only just beginning to venture out into the real world. Roman Coppola's critically panned "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III," starring Charlie Sheen and Bill Murray, was their first theatrical release three weeks ago -- it's left them much room for improvement. That'll come in two weeks' time with the simultaneous release of Sally Potter's...

Accomplished screenwriter, actress, and mother, Gloria Laino is a true Renaissance woman. Born in the beach town of Guanica, Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, Laino spent her early adult years in Jordan before moving to Miami to pursue her career in acting. Having appeared in numerous roles on Spanish and American television, as well as theater and film, Laino is most well known for her role on the acclaimed series “Weeds” and as “The Mexican” on the award winning drama, “American Horror Story: Asylum”. She can most recently be seen in Roman Coppola’s new film, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III.
I recently had a chance to speak with Gloria Laino about her career and her new role. She discussed how drove her to become an actor, learning to speak Arabic in three months, and working with Charlie Sheen.

Chicago – Roman Coppola, Oscar-nominated as you read this for his great work co-writing “Moonrise Kingdom” (he also co-wrote “The Darjeeling Limited” with Wes Anderson) brings us the truly odd “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III,” now available On Demand and opening this Friday in Chicago. The film proves two things – that Charlie Sheen is a better actor than his public persona and stint on “Two and a Half Men” may have led you to believe and that he needs to find a character to prove that instead of this riff on his real-life drama.
Charles Swan III does not coincidentally have the same initials as the man who plays this troubled character, who we meet after a break-up with the lovely Ivana (Katheryn Winnick) sends him into an existential and intoxicant-filled tailspin. We wander through this egotist’s hallucinations (in one, he wins an award for Best Bullshit,...

A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III
Written by Roman Coppola
Directed by Roman Coppola
USA, 2012
Opens Feb. 15 in Toronto and Montreal
In the opening scene of A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, the titular Swan (played by Charlie Sheen) is given a psych evaluation, wherein the screen is cluttered with bursting pop-art collages that consist of 30% nonsense and 70% T&A. Everything about the character is revealed in this scene; all of his fears, desires, fantasies, anxieties. Within the opening minute, the concept promised to us by the movie’s title is already fulfilled. Job done, fade to black, credits. This is not what the movie does, unfortunately, and it’s a doggone shame that it doesn’t. For an 86-minute movie, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is about 85 minutes too long.

With few significant new openings these days and competition for multiple adult-appealing Oscar contenders still significant, "Lore" and "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" both posted just average opening grosses. The snow in New York likely had some impact on box office there (both films opened only in NYC and Los Angeles), but the reality is 2013 is starting off slowly in terms of debuting releases. Though not expanded yet beyond their initial limited runs, last week's documentary openers "The Gatekeepers" and "Koch" held up well this weekend. "Quartet" and "Amour" both expanded their respective still less-than-wide profiles, with the former showing a good deal more appeal despite its lack of any awards love. Opening "Lore" (Music Box) - Metacritic score: 73; Festivals include: Sydney 2012, Toronto 2012, Hamptons 2012 $31,000 in 6 theaters; PSA (per screen average): $5,133 ...

The specialty box office had a slow weekend, likely in part due to the arrival of Nemo on the East Coast. Three films made their limited debuts -- A24's "A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III," Music Box Film's "Lore" and AMC Theaters' "Lost in Thailand" -- though none managed averages in the five figure range. The only film to do that was Sony Classics' Oscar-nominated documentary "The Gatekeepers," which held very strong as it stayed static in 3 theaters. It grossed $42,449, averaging $14,150. That was the highest average of any film in release, wide or limited, and bodes well for the film's expansion in the coming weeks. As for the newcomers, A24's inaugural movie "A Glimpse Inside The Mind of Charles Swan III" had the best per-theater-average, taking in $12,000 from 2 screens for a $6,000 average. Starring Charlie Sheen, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman, A24 noted the film increased...

Title: A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III Director: Roman Coppola Starring: Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Katheryn Winnick, Patricia Arquette, Aubrey Plaza, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Dermot Mulroney, Richard Edson, Stephen Dorff, Colleen Camp, Angela Lindvall Crafting a movie around the notion of Charlie Sheen as a louche womanizer experiencing some sort of midlife crisis is hardly the stuff of imaginative brilliance, but as filtered through the prism of Roman Coppola’s mind’s eye, it at least remains intriguing enough to qualify “A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III” as a playful lark. There are more great scenes in A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III than there are in most films in theaters today. Unfortunately, there’s also a gaping hole in the middle of it all, and its name is Charlie Sheen. Surprising, too, because you’d think that the role of a womanizing fuck-up would be one for the ages for the troubled star — the perfect vehicle for a redemptive comeback. He gives it a shot, but cool insincerity can only take you so far.Written and directed by Roman Coppola (son of Francis, brother of Sofia), Charles Swan unfolds as a series of colorful and impeccably filmed genre-hopping set pieces, in what feels at times like a kind of mixed-media free-for-all. It opens on hotshot designer Swan (Sheen), face obscured partially by a fedora and sunglasses, being interrogated by an offscreen voice. (“Not sleeping well?” “No.” “Hard...

Early reviews have not been very positive but it is still expected to be an easy win at the box office. The only major competition comes in the form of Steven Soderbergh's (final?) film, the pharmacology thriller Side Effects starring Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara. Tony Scott's Top Gun also gets an 3D re-release on approximately 300 screens, and in select theatres we have Roman Coppola's A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III and the critically-acclaimed holocaust drama Lore. Any film with a title as obnoxious as A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III seems resolutely unconcerned with actually getting wide audience acceptance. I've watched the film, and even interviewed the director, and still have a hell of a time keeping the title straight. That said, it does give you a sense of the film, a warped, manic, sometimes offensive and sometimes surprisingly effective tale of a resolute prick coming to terms with the breakup of his relationship with a younger, more attractive girl. The Swan in question is played by a real life Charlie, this being Charlie Sheen's first big-screen role since his infamous "winning" phase and very public meltdown. The script and direction is handled by the Coppola scion Roman, whose...

Plot: A seventies graphic designer, Charles Swan III (Charlie Sheen) tries to sort out his life after being dumped by his girlfriend (Katheryn Winnick). Review: A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III was a film I really wanted to like.
