'Professor Marston and the Wonder Women' Director on the Superhero's Kinky Origin Story (Exclusive)
If you saw Wonder Woman this summer -- and the record-setting $800 million worldwide box office indicates a lot of people saw Wonder Woman this summer -- then you know the story of how Diana, Princess of Themyscira, became the superhero Wonder Woman, protector of mankind. How Wonder Woman ended up on the pages of comic books in the first place is a story unto itself however, told in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women: In 1941, Dr. William Moulton Marston (played by Luke Evans), his wife, Elizabeth (Rebecca Hall), and their lover, Olive Byrne (Bella Heathcote), created the character to save the world...through psychology. Director Angela Robinson (D.E.B.S.) could never have predicted, though, that her Wonder Woman indie would arrive in theaters mere months after one of the biggest movies of the year.
"I'm getting a lot of credit for having the foresight to know that in the summer of 2017, the 75-years-in-the-making, long-gestating Wonder Woman movie would...

When it debuted earlier this summer, "UnREAL" was already a pleasant surprise, by virtue of being a compelling and nuanced drama airing on Lifetime, a channel that's had quality scripted shows before ("Any Day Now"), but not in a long time. In the weeks since, whatever surprise came from finding a show this good on this network has been replaced by the sheer pleasure the series — half-satire of "The Bachelor," half dark drama about the morally-compromised individuals who work at such a place — has offered. It's knotty and absorbing in the way we've come to expect from the better cable dramas of this era, and has two knockout performances at the center from Shiri Appleby (as a producer who hates how good she is at manipulating the contestants, even as she keeps on doing it) and Constance Zimmer (as Appleby's frightening but human boss). So it's great to hear that Lifetime has ordered another season,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Even when I watched far more reality TV than I do now, I had zero patience for dating competition shows. And I haven't watched a Lifetime show regularly since "Any Day Now" ended waaaay back in 2002. Yet I've already set a DVR season pass for "UnReal," Lifetime's new drama set behind the scenes at a thinly-disguised version of "The Bachelor." That's how good it is. "UnReal" (it debuts tonight at 10) was created by TV veteran Marti Noxon (whose Bravo show "Girlfriends Guide to Divorce" debuted earlier this year) and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, adapting Shapiro's short film "Sequin Raze." The show aims to pull back the curtain on reality TV to demonstrate just how much of a role production plays in manipulating and/or altering events to turn complicated human beings into two-dimensional character types (the bitch, the virgin, the desperate cougar) who can fill familiar roles in the same old storylines.

Read More: Watch: 'Inherent Vice' Costume Designer Mark Bridges Takes You Into The Closet Film Independent hosts a wide range of educational seminars for its members throughout the year. The ongoing "Know Your Crew" series examines the filmmaking process through the vantage point of different crew positions. Indiewire sat in on last week's installment of "Know Your Crew," which consisted of a presentation by costume designer Samantha Kuester. Her credits include the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award-winner "Any Day Now" and the 2015 Netflix-Dreamworks Animation-AwesomenessTV series "Richie Rich." Kuester, who described herself as a cost-conscious designer who is meticulous about the budget she is given on a project, shared instances in which filmmakers should spend or budget more upfront in order to save money in the long run. "The more money you can put into the department, the better it is because you will be surprised...

Nick Lachey loves being a daddy, and it shows! On Sunday, the 41-year-old Sing-Off host Instagrammed a picture of himself giving 2-year-old son Camden a sweet kiss. Dad pointed that he knows "one little man excited [The Sing-Off] is back this Wednesday"—and that's not all Cam's got to look forward to: Any day now, he's going to be a big brother! Vanessa Lachey is pregnant with baby No. 2—a girl!—and as Nick told E! News last month, "it's anybody's guess" when little lady Lachey will arrive. "We're probably looking at the end of the year, beginning of next year—somewhere in that time frame," he said. And is Camden excited to have a baby...

The Walking Dead season 5 is all about showing the effects of loss and grief. Here's Ron's review of the year's penultimate episode...
This review contains spoilers.
5.7 Crossed
The Walking Dead has shown an admirable ability to focus on one particular storyline at a time this season. There'll be some splitting up, but we'll get a Bethisode or a Carol and Daryl caper, or something else focusing on one particular group of our scattered survivors, and very little of what the show did in its second season—split everyone up, then split every episode up. That split style works for something like Game Of Thrones, which features divergent enough cast members and settings to help the viewer keep up with who is where.
That doesn't work quite as well with The Walking Dead, because if you've seen one post-apocalyptic zombie hellscaape, you've seen 'em all. However, the characters look different enough...

Paul Thomas Anderson’s next star-studded caper, the druggie mystery Inherent Vice, is priming audiences ahead of its December release. Following on from its debut at the New York Film Festival, which led to a torrent of critical praise, the wheels are in motion to ensure the word-of-mouth continues. Today, a triple whammy of new goodies has landed in the shape of a new UK trailer, banner poster and a rundown of the film’s official soundtrack.
We’ve already witnessed the first full-length trailer, which honed in on the movie’s comical angle. This newest preview, however, crafted for UK audiences by Anderson himself, goes one step further. As well as drafting in new footage of Joaquin Phoenix’s stoner private eye Doc Sportello, the trailer goes on to reveal details of a special preview screening set to take place in London this coming week. For filmgoers in the UK capital,...

Jonny Greenwood has once again provided the score for a Paul Thomas Anderson film after scoring both There Will be Blood and The Master previously and details on his Inherent Vice score as well as the songs featured on the film's soundtrack have been made available via Film Music Reporter along with a new banner for the film as seen above and a new picture featuring stars Joaquin Phoenix and Katherine Waterston. The soundtrack will be made available on December 15 (preorder here), three days after the film's limited release on December 12 and it features nine new tracks from Greenwood along with tracks from Can, The Marketts, Radiohead, Minnie Riperton, Kyu Sakamoto, Neil Young, Les Baxter and Chuck Jackson. I have gone ahead and created a Spotify playlist featuring the tracks available right now, which means everything other than the new Greenwood composed pieces and the track from The Marketts. Netflix released the new season of "Orange Is the New Black" last night, and I offered some early thoughts on the season yesterday. My plan is to review the season two episodes at a time, at a pace that may be weekly or may be more irregular than that, just to see how things go given the collision of the Netflix distribution model with the weekly discussion model. Thoughts on the first two episodes coming up just as soon as my mom tells me my birth story... "I think I've moved beyond stress into something more deeply disturbing." -Piper Like I said in yesterday's review, I'm impressed by Jenji Kohan responding to all the acclaim for the show's deep ensemble — and the ambivalence of many towards Piper (even if there are very passionate Piper/Alex partisans) — by returning with an episode that features only Piper (plus a little Alex). A...

In grey Victoria's Secret sweatpants, a flannel shirt tied around her waist, and a form-fitted white top, the R&B star, 28, looked like she was ready to pop. In late March the "Love Sex Magic" singer celebrated her baby shower with her A-List pals like Kim Kardashian and Lala Anthony. Ciara returned the shower favor on May 10 when [...]...

Kids and families flocked to The Lego Movie and the Captain America sequel while teenagers embraced Divergent and adults checked into The Grand Budapest Hotel last weekend.
All told it was a buoyant frame as nationwide takings improved by 6% to $18.25 million and six titles each earned more than $1 million.
Animated comedy The Lego Movie eased by 10% to $5.1 million in its second weekend, propelling its haul to $14.4 million, according to Rentrak.s estimates. The Village Roadshow Pictures/Warner Bros. co-production looks set to reach $28 million, if not $30 million, and the worldwide cume hit $US425 million.
Superhero adventure Captain America: The Winter Soldier grabbed $3.6 million despite falling by 40%, to elevate its 11-day total to $12.2 million. However the Marvel franchise isn.t tracking as strongly here as in the Us, where the film starring Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and Samuel J. Jackson has rung up $US159 million in 10 days.

Kat Graham is content with leaving all the drama on "The Vampire Diaries," and plans to have a "low maintenance" wedding.
"The Vampire Diaries" star revealed to E! News that her wedding planning with fiancé Cottrell Guidry is pretty much over. "I planned the wedding," Graham tells the site. "We're basically done. We just did everything in two weeks. I'm low maintenance. I'm like, 'That's looks cute! Why not? That's great!'"
Graham and Guidry have been engaged since October 2012, and Graham says that wedding bells could be chiming sooner than you'd think. "Next time you see me I might be a married woman," Graham teases. "Any day now."
Now if only Bonnie's love life could be as easy and happy as her portrayer's -- although that certainly wouldn't be as interesting to watch on the small screen.

Ridley Scott's 1977 debut, The Duellists, proves a welcome addition to Netflix in a difficult week for the company
Ah, January: the month that sparkles with revived possibility and unspoiled options. Unless, of course, you're a Netflix subscriber. Groggy revellers browsing the streaming service in search of hangover entertainment from New Year's Day onward will have found the selection somewhat smaller: owing to licensing expirations and financial constraints, nearly 500 titles, ranging from Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps to Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream, had vanished from the virtual shelves by 5 January.
The addition of 80-odd new titles, many of them disposable, doesn't exactly cushion the blow. Still, there are some welcome new arrivals, among them Andrea Arnold's stunning formalist revision of Wuthering Heights, Lee Daniels's lovably lurid potboiler The Paperboy and this week's clear streaming highlight: Ridley Scott's The Duellists. Julie Taymor’s (Frida) stunning 1999 cinematic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s first tragedy, Titus arrives on Blu-ray for the first time in January, 2014.

Stewart Alexander is a Canadian actor and writer based in London, England. He was born and raised in Lachine, Quebec, and moved to the UK shortly after graduating from McGill University. Having made a number of short films on Super-8 in college, he embarked on a self-appointed apprenticeship assisting in the lighting, sound and editorial departments for a number of production companies in the UK. He also wrote and directed a short film called, “The Leather Jacket,” which was shot on 16mm, and edited, in a pre-digital age, on a Steenbeck. After meeting Kerry Skinner while studying to be an actor, he wrote the stage-play “Body Checks,” which they co-produced to considerable critical acclaim, and then adapted into a screenplay.
Now Alexander and Skinner have co-directed their first feature, the comedy-drama Common People. The film weaves together six stories and over thirty characters to present a dramatic, humorous and sometimes magical tale of romance,...

Following a summer season dominated by animation and action blockbusters, cinemas welcomed a more grownup programming mix after kids and teens went back to school after the long holiday. The reliable Richard Curtis delivered another box-office chart-topper, About Time, thanks to a debut of £1.76m, including £385,000 in Wednesday/Thursday takings. That's almost dead level with the opening salvo of 2009's The Boat That Rocked: £1.80m, including £471,000 in previews.
The Boat That Rocked was an expensively made film that ended up with a weak £6.2m total in the UK – a massive disappointment after the £36.8m success of 2003's Love Actually. About Time suggests itself as...
