It seemed obvious enough at the time: After breaking out with his first lead role in F. Gary Gray’s 2015 biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” earning acclaim and awards for his note-perfect portrayal of rap royalty Eric “Eazy-e” Wright, actor Jason Mitchell was about to become a huge star. Usually, that sort of attention means that actors can cherry pick roles from bountiful offers.
That’s not what happened. Instead, Mitchell landed a handful of small roles in mostly underseen indies like “Barry” and “Vincent N Roxxy,” and started to worry that “Straight Outta Compton” was a one-time thing.
Two years later, the tide has turned again, with Mitchell garnering accolades for his turn in Dee Rees’ hard-hitting historical drama “Mudbound.” Ironically, he still has “Straight Outta Compton” to thank for a part that seems poised to earn him even more awards.

A Cure for Wellness (Gore Verbinski)
The asylum-based film is a fairly interesting mini-genre to deconstruct. The days when every independent filmmaker worshipped at the altar of Quentin Tarantino are, for the most part, behind us. It’s been long enough that a good old-fashioned ’90s-style ultraviolent crime thriller now seems like a nostalgia trip, orgies of violence and long pans around a dinner table and all. That’s certainly the case for Chicago-born filmmaker Gary Michael Schultz’s sophomore feature, Vincent N Roxxy, which suffers from many of the same shortcomings that plagued tough-talking Tarantino homages in the late ’90s but distinguishes itself with a satisfying climax.
Promotional materials for the film make it sound like a Natural Born Killers-style “criminal lovers on the run” road-trip movie, but most of it actually takes place in the small town where Vincent (Emile Hirsch) grew up. (The film was shot in Louisiana, but the setting is clearly meant to evoke run-down burgs in the rural Midwest...

"I always felt trapped in this town..." Vertical Entertainment has debuted the trailer for an indie crime thriller romance titled Vincent N Roxxy, telling the love story between two lost souls. Zoe Kravitz stars as Roxxy, an "inner city girl in trouble", who's attacked on the street in broad daylight. Emile Hirsch plays Vincent, who tries to save her, but ends up falling in love with her and the two go on the run from their pasts and the dangerous people after them. The cast includes Zoey Deutch, Emory Cohen, Scott Mescudi, Beau Knapp, and Jason Mitchell. While this obviously seems like an updated, modern version of Bonnie and Clyde, or even Sid and Nancy, they're trying to make it unique with developed characters. This doesn't look that good, and I prefer American Honey anyway, but this might be worth checking out. Watch below. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for...

Four features under his belt (2004’s Malachance, 2006’s Drama/Mex, 2008’s I’m Gonna Explode and 2011’s Miss Bala) and Gerardo Naranjo‘s only history with the Sundance film festival is as a jury member. That might change come next January. One that I consider the odd man out among filmmakers from the Mexican film renaissance that commenced back with Iñárritu’s Amores Perros, from lovers on the run, beauty queens on the move and young adults hitting the road, there is a lot of chaotic displacement in his films. Since his sophomore feature, his films are high value festival items and since this is a U.S. shot project, Viena and the Fantomes could very much land a coveted Premieres category showing to make bidders. Naranjo’s Un Certain Regard section selected thriller Miss Bala seriously made the rounds, so this eighties punk era set film has a certain...

Best known for his stumbling car salesman and poor choice of a husband in the Coen Bros’s Fargo, in his almost four decade career William H. Macy has seen his share of Park City red carpet treatment, including his directorial debut in 2014. While Rudderless might have been true to the film’s title, the filmmaker got right back into the saddle this past May for his sophomore project. What is being referred to as an American road trip sex comedy, despite some noteworthy comedic folk within this set of players (Alexandra Daddario, Kate Upton, Matt Barr, Matt L. Jones, Rob Corddry, Kal Penn, Molly Shannon) this doesn’t feel as Sundance-y as his previous effort.

Troll Hunter director André Øvredal has had to weather the usual changes and delays for his new indie thriller The Autopsy Of Jane Doe. While Martin Sheen was once attached to star, the film will now feature Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox, which seems like a fair trade. The pair is set as father-and-son coroners who receive the body of a mysterious murder victim, a beautiful young woman. The fact that she’s unidentified is just the first puzzling thing. There’s also the fact that her body shows no apparent cause of death. As they dig into the mystery, they unearth a series of increasingly bizarre clues that in turn lead them to her terrifying secrets...Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing wrote the script for this one, with Øvredal gearing up for a shoot in London at the end of this month. Fingers crossed it works out this time.
