With the annual ceremony of The Oscars comes the understandable hype and speculation of who will be winners on the night. Despite there not being a Video Game category in the awards ceremony, there are still links to the industry itself with none other than Steven Spielberg.
The titan of the film industry is no stranger to academic recognition and has seen various accolades over the years. However, some people may be surprised to learn that despite his distinguished career in the film industry, he has also had a well-recognized influence on the gaming industry and is responsible for some well-known classic titles.

Everyone is aware of how talented director Steven Spielberg is, however, not many people know that the director is equally influential in the gaming industry. In 1999, the director created and served as a producer for a first-person shooter video game, Medal of Honor, which was developed by DreamWorks Interactive and published by Electronic Arts.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond
The Medal of Honor franchise was quite popular in the 2000s, however, the competition from franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield slowed it down. In 2020, the franchise made a strong comeback with Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. It was certainly a remarkable game as it became the only video game to win an Oscar. The game includes the short documentary Colette, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject at the 93rd Academy Awards.

When a game like Helldivers 2 hits the market, the demand for a PvP mode is inevitable. After all, it has a lot of guns, already features squad-based gameplay, and requires an active internet connection (even for solo play sessions).
Since you are already playing with people all over the world, why not add the option to play against them as well, right? Well, it seems the developers are strongly against this decision. So much so, that we will never be getting a PvP mode to the game unless someone can create some sort of mod for the PC version.
The Devs of Helldivers 2 Are Against PvP Modes Due to Toxicity
Squad-based Helldivers 2 will never get a PvP mode
Confirmation for there never being a PvP mode for Helldivers 2 came directly from the top boss at Arrowhead Games, Johan Pilestedt. He shared this decision during a conversation on X. Pilestedt was...

International superstar Yoshiki has auctioned his beloved crystal piano to raise money for earthquake victims, with the winning bid reaching 40 million yen when the 4-day auction ended on January 16.
Yoshiki announced the auction on January 9 at his ceremony at Tcl Chinese Theatre, where his cement handprints and footprints were unveiled at the forecourt of the Hollywood landmark. Yoshiki is the first Japanese star to receive the rare honor from the Chinese Theatre since the tradition began nearly 100 years ago.
The classically-trained pianist and composer’s Kawai Cr-40N piano had been used for recording in his Los Angeles studio and for tours. On January 4th, Yoshiki donated 10 million yen to the Japanese Red Cross through his 501c3 non-profit organization Yoshiki Foundation America to support areas affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake.
Yoshiki said, “I was back in Japan at the end of the year for several TV appearances, and through the news reports I saw the damages caused by the earthquake. It is very painful as I think about the feelings of the many people who are suffering so much in the disaster areas. I thought about what I could do and made a donation. The reason I announce these donations each time is to attempt to expand the circle of support even a little. Exclusive: John Patton Ford is writing to direct an untitled film for Netflix with 21 Laps producing. Ford wrote and directed the Aubrey Plaza starrer Emily the Criminal.
The drama follows a mysterious Union spy named James Andrews who, along with infantry volunteers, stole a Confederate steam engine and planned to destroy the entire Confederacy’s supply line to end the war.
Racing along at speeds up to 60 mph, they destroyed track to the main Southern supply route behind them and shut down communications by cutting telegraph lines, all to disrupt the Confederacy’s supply line. The six surviving raiders became the first to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded by Abraham Lincoln. The caper also would be the historical basis for Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent film The General.

Roger Corman's 1960 feature films "House of Usher" was the first film in a long series of Edgar Allan Poe-based movies at American International Pictures. From 1960 to 1964, Corman directed eight Poe films, with all but one of them starring Vincent Price. After "House of Usher," Corman made "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Premature Burial," the anthology film "Tales of Terror," "The Raven," "The Haunted Palace," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Tomb of Ligeia." Technically, 1963's "The Haunted Palace" isn't a Poe movie. It was named after Poe's 1893 poem but was in fact based on the 1927 short novel "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" by H.P. Lovecraft. Poe, it seems, was a bigger marquee name than Lovecraft, so the latter author's story was merely folded into Corman's short-lived but well-remembered Poe subgenre.

Portraying Parker Caine in the first two seasons of Charmed was the charm Nick Hargrove needed in his career. Movie star John Wayne developed a strong understanding of what audiences wanted to see from him in the roles that he chose. However, he also kept a finger on the pulse of the type of films that his peers starred in, and he certainly wasn’t afraid to speak his mind about them. Wayne didn’t care for a Gary Cooper movie that he called a “mockery of America’s highest award for valor.”
John Wayne prioritized movie morals John Wayne | Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images
Wayne held the belief that the movie industry should be a “family business” of sorts. He detested the notion of a ratings system that allowed adult feature films with extreme violence and sexuality to hit silver screens to rely on human curiosity to make money.
The Oscar-winning actor refused to accept notable roles in movies such as High Noon and Blazing Saddles because of their morals.

I know that this is going to sound strange, but I sometimes feel like the Sony PlayStation doesn’t get enough love. Yes, it was an incredibly successful console, but it was also a console designed and supported by a lot of people who were trying to figure things out as they went along. That approach led to a lot of big swings and big misses, but it also resulted in a shocking number of games that were truly ahead of their time.
Actually, the PS1 may just be the ‘90s console that ended up having the biggest impact on the future of the industry. While its status as such is a testament to its technological innovations and library of great games, it also speaks to the many PS1 games that somehow feel more relevant now than they ever have before.
Before we talk about those games, though, here are...

Director Kari Skogland is a little relieved to have her Disney+ series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” completed — now she can actually talk about its complexities free from the fear of spoiling anything. “Obviously with any creative project you never know how it’s going to land,” Skogland said in an interview with IndieWire. The show’s themes, including racism and systemic inequality, were always going to be tough for a Marvel series to tackle, but Skogland is satisfied at the end of the day.
Skogland believes that with the one-two punch of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests of the last year the series only becomes more poignant. “From very early on we were in this conversation. We were in a racially charged, emotional conversation about not just racism [and] intolerance, but justice and elitism,” she said.

Video game players might be familiar with Colette, a short documentary film that features a 90-year-old former member of the French Resistance and appears inside the virtual reality adventure Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. Movie buffs may know the project from its distribution by the U.K.’s The Guardian newspaper.
Others, meanwhile, have no doubt noticed the film’s inclusion amongst the Oscar nominees at the 93rd Academy Awards. It is the first Oscar nomination for writer and director Anthony Giacchino and producer Alice Doyard, as well as for Electronic Arts’ Respawn Entertainment and Facebook’s Oculus Studios, the gaming companies that co-produced ...

The legacies of Medal of Honor and Saving Private Ryan have gone in wildly different directions since the late ’90s. The latter is still thought of as one of the most influential and memorable movies ever made. The former is sometimes referred to as a “Did You Know?” piece of Call of Duty‘s history or maybe just proof the PS1 had a couple of good first-person shooters.
It wasn’t always that way, though. There was a time when the fates of Medal of Honor and Saving Private Ryan seemed destined to be forever intertwined. After all, Medal of Honor was essentially pitched as the game that would do to WW2 games what Saving Private Ryan did for WW2 films.
That never quite happened, but the ways that the fates of those two projects began, diverged, met, and ultimately split helped shape the future of gaming in ways you may may not know about.

“Humanity needs to remember these things in order to survive,” declares Anthony Giacchino, the director of “Colette.” The documentary about an elderly woman confronting a traumatic past has been nominated for Best Documentary Short at this year’s Oscars. The film was originally featured as part of the “Medal of Honor” video game franchise and is the first film from the video game industry to receive an Oscar nomination. Watch our exclusive video interview with Giacchino and producer Alice Doyard above.
The film follows Colette Marin-Catherine, a member of the French Resistance whose brother Jean-Pierre died in a German concentration camp during World War II. A young history student named Lucie joins Colette as she travels to Germany for the first time in more than seven decades. The movie documents Colette’s emotional struggles as she visits both the concentration camp and the crematorium where her brother likely perished.
