Sam is not likable
amberveyt1 November 2019
This episode made me really really dislike Sam Dean. She was annoying, mean and angry at Josh for no good reason. I don't understand why he is trying so hard to find her, she doesn't seem to be worth the trouble.

Sam is too good for Josh
CameronWalker0118 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I find it incredible that people are blaming Sam for Josh's poor behaviour. But then I probably shouldn't be, it just shows you that misogyny is rampant still within our society. Sam's only crime is being put off by his declaration of love when she's only known him for a short time. Did people miss the part where his entire attitude towards her changes as soon as he finds out she's not a virgin? He went from awkwardly, but enthusiastically wanting to be with her, to being stand offish after he knew it wasn't her first time. She rightly asserts herself and puts him in his place, maybe a bit harshly, but she was 100% right. His behaviour at the end of the episode just confirms that yes he really did have an issue with her not being this "pure" virginal type. And blaming her for something that resulted from his decision just shows you what kind of guy he is.

Dickensian Josh
nammage7 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I dreaded this episode before I even got to it. I just don't see what the chemistry is between Josh and Sam. Also, I dislike the character of Josh; he's seen as this "nice sensitive guy" type character but the dude is a huge dickensian (a 'dickensian' is a term taken from low-life characters from Charles Dickens' novels.) He also outwardly portrays himself as a 'whoa-is-me' character -- and he's supposed to be the hero? Sam is somewhat the direct opposite of Josh but also a 'whoa-is-me' person but just because they have that connection doesn't necessarily mean they should be connected to each other. I hope they don't hook up in the end, and while I think KJ could do better than Josh, I found it humorous just a little while before Josh found out that Sam was supposedly dead he's already hooking up with KJ. Dude, the guy has been looking for the supposed love of his life and (figuratively speaking) seconds later he's hooking up with another girl who then, apparently, he doesn't understand how he's being cruel to her. The guy is a dope.

I like the overall premise of the show, and it may be just me and I know this based on a graphic novel (which I've never read) but the love story in this show, in my opinion, is bringing this series down based on the non-existent chemistry between the characters of Josh and Sam. As I said: I like the premise but it's sort of becoming redundant.

Awesome show, only downer episode.
jswope-405101 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I give this show a 9. 10 for every episode but this one. I liked Josh as a character until this episode. Josh became a real POS this episode. He was very judgy & jealous & put all of his despair onto Sam. It felt extremely out of character for him. Glad this wasn't the first episode. I still look forward to another season.

An amazing love story
thanasistoutoglou-3219328 October 2019
Yes its extremely out of the apocalypse story. Yes it may be cheesy or boring cause its a love story episode and doesnt have zombie splatters or backstabing. But its really well placed to understand the full backstory. The reason josh is willing to do anything to find sam. It shows exactly what its like to be the good kid with the perfect scores and the happy face, who doesnt know who he/she really is. Sam has amazing point of view of life and the fact she is balancing between good and bad is what it makes her perfect. It would be 10/10 .

This episode broke the series
blacksw13 November 2019
Up until now the series was great! Funny and clever with good pacing and enjoyable to watch. This episode was long, drawn-out, and painful to watch. The one thing that it definitely succeeded on? Made me dislike both of them equally. Not sure why either of them would want to be with the other.

Interesting view
whereispeadar5 November 2019
It's awkward. It's funny. It's sometimes made me feel it didn't know where it was going. But boy, it did. This episode explored complex topics of love, sex, gender stereotypes, the Hollywood meaning of it all - and the reality of it all. The episode is an entire flashback but is strong in explaining the complex narrative between two of the main protagonists, and I think it's exceptionally well done.

WTF happened?
rrberthelot11 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I agree with everyone else who said this episode brought down the show. Turns out Sam Dean is a manic pixie dream girl with an emphasis manic. Even as an insecure highschioler I would have run screaming from someone that obviously in need of therapy. After watching this episode I'm hoping she doesn't make it through the 1st season. Josh's insecure b.s. doesn't exactly make him more endearing ether, and now I'm questioning his whole driving motivation in the show.

Real
andy_wilks5 August 2022
Not sure why everyone struggled so much on what I see as an integral episode in establishing the relationship of Josh and Sam, the main relationship for the protagonist, as well as some much needed character development. The episode was as real as it gets and took me back to a place in my youth when everything was new and exciting with a relationship. It covered a lot of topical issues and was very current. Great writing and excellent score. Ignore the hate and trust me on this one.

Josh sucks
hirogryn5 March 2020
So the basis of this episode is that Josh is a misogynistic ashole and Sam Dean is bloody amazing. She was to good for him, I really hope she doesn't take him back after he rescues her!

Waste of an Episode
gbeleven17 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a complete waste of time and slammed on the brakes for a show that, while flawed, showed some promise.

A series that had some interesting takes on teenage culture, and relationships became a mean-spirited romantic "comedy" for one episode?

I've never seen a teenage boy get exactly what he wanted in a teenage girl only to, at the last second, turn into a scared eight year old.

I've also never seen a teenage girl turn into a shrewish, middle-aged divorcee that needs her love interest to do exactly what she wants at that exact moment.

Did the writers have some sort of a group stroke? Did the producers just go along with it? Who thought that this episode, in the middle of the series, was a good idea?

Just listen to what Sam says
mdking-4924413 October 2021
I was watching this episode getting really annoyed at BOTH Josh and Sam's behaviour and then Sam said one line in the swimming pool that made me realise why, regardless of what other people are putting in their reviews, that they're still worth rooting for.....

Potential squandered
whilgeman16 December 2019
I get what they're doing here. Started off realistic, I liked the clunkiness of the sex scene, but the conversations turned into long tirades (usually with lots of Josh just staring and not getting a single word in) and it lost the realism quickly. Would've liked the pacing choice if the flashback was more of a realistic dialogue, seeing as...you know, the whole episode relied on dialogue.

Sours the rest of the show going forward
im_notfreddie12 June 2020
Both Sam and Josh have this entire episode to develop their relationship but it ends up ruining them both and making Sam thoroughly unlikeable whilst turning Josh into someone you don't want to root for but instead to die and make the more interesting and fun side characters.

Wow
dirtybizcut13 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I've been binge watching this show and have become a huge fan. That being said, I really wish I would have skipped this episode. The tone of this episode was really different compared to all the episodes so far. If the point was to make you hate two of the main characters then they achieved their goal as far as I'm concerned. They're really going to have to put in work to change my opinion, especially for sam dean.

Whiplash going from the last episode to this one
daveo-295-25351810 December 2019
Loved the last episode, didn't like this one at all. Josh and Sam's characters and their relationship are not the strongest aspects of the show because they are very tropey. Making the whole episode revolve around it and then make the twist depend on an immersion-breaking, unrealistic decision (I guess it's more important for mom to be as cryptic as possible rather than get a response, even after 10 failed attempts to reach her son)... it doesn't work. Also, this episode just didn't mesh with the emotional tone of the last episodes at all... it's a big swing going from mumbling Turbodaddy with subtitles and farting pledges to pure teenage drama. It just doesn't work when binging episodes on netflix.

Still and underrated show so far, but oof this episode was hard to get through.

Garbage Episode

A flashback episode that is a complete divergence from the rest of the season. If you want to be Dawson's Creek make a different show.

Unrealistic
Realistic_Maybe31 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Sam came across as an arrogant girl. Why would a boy chase after someone like that? If the show was trying to potray girl power then I think they got it wrong. She was exposing herself to the pizzaboy infront of someone that she is in a relationship with? WTF? Overall I thought the series was good until this episode, which was ****..

Pretty pretty bad
jellerstudios1 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Going into this one I was excited to learn some backstory, but the whole episode was garbage. The tone of everything just totally shifted. I stopped watching about 2/3 in and just went on to the next one. Wish I had known that you could've skipped this episode.

They tried to pull something with having Josh actually be a douche, but then Sam totally turns on him too? Like, I get pulling a reverse on the audience, but after the episode I really didn't like either of them.

Completely ruined Josh for me!
yathman29 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I mean why blame Sam for not talking to your mom or for not calling your dad? Its not her fault you had been ignoring your mom texts/notes!

She's been nothing but tolerant of all your stupid actions!!

I agree that the tantrums she threw in the swimming pool were a bit weird but the desire to not be looked upon as the perfect girl and the pressure arising due to the judgemental eyes of the society is understandable, especially in the teenage. However, she still wants to be with you!!!!

And what do you do? You act like a f*ckin child!

I mean she could be with anyone! But still she chose to stick with you. She sees something in you and all you do is complain, whine, be sheepish, be insecure, be decisive, blame her for your stupid doings, sleep with KJ not long after getting to know she's dead and also, break her nose.

You just ruined it for me! The "nice-guy-with-a-sad-life" b.s. Is not working anymore.

You need to step up your game and act like a grown up. You are not 8 anymore.

And Sam is your girlfriend, not your mom. Do something for her too! Don't just sit and let her do everything.
