Aubrey Plaza is a charming actress and delightful comedian, but what catches the attention of her fans the most are the very quirky characters she often chooses to portray. In her breakthrough role in Parks and Recreation, the actress is deadpan and sarcastic, while in her latest The White Lotus’ the actress is known for her cynicism while battling marital tension. Even in the upcoming Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, the actress plays an ambitious power-hungry journalist.
Aubrey Plaza in Parks and Recreation
So, what is it about the actress starring only in such unconventional roles? Plaza states that it is just her way of making the world a better place by accepting characters that one normally would describe as outsiders.

Jason Statham is someone who is admirably unpretentious and genuinely grateful for his success, and within that, he has a definite preference of films that can predominantly define his career. Earlier this year, Statham was seen in The Beekeeper, a seemingly usual action B-movie fare with the star, but the movie from Suicide Squad director David Ayer would throw in some bold conceptual curve balls to the normal vengeance tale. Deadline has now reported that Statham will be working with director Baltasar Kormákur for his next action film.
Kormákur’s resume features such credits as Contraband, 2 Guns, Everest and the recent Idris Elba lion attack film, Beast. According to Deadline, “In the currently untitled pic, Statham will play Mason who lives in isolation in a remote Scottish island. Exclusive: The in-demand Sydney Sweeney, coming off hit rom-com Anyone But You and horror pic Immaculate, is shifting gears again as she is set to portray trailblazing boxer Christy Martin in a new biopic which could be a knockout for buyers at the Cannes market where Black Bear will be launching.
Under the direction of Oz filmmaker David Michôd, known for visceral movies such as Animal Kingdom and The King, the currently untitled project will chart the true story of Martin’s rise to become America’s most well known female boxer in the 1990s — the “female Rocky” in the words of the film’s producers. A naturally gifted fighter, her life transformed in 1989 when she met her manager, and later husband, Jim Martin. Breaking boundaries, she became the first woman to sign with iconic promoter Don King, and the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

With Covid lockdowns and shuttered cinemas and the dual wallop of the writers’ and actors’ strikes, it’s been a rough few years for independent movies. But the end of strike action last November has triggered a rebound in the indie market. After a strong showing in Sundance, buyers and sellers are looking to Berlin’s European Film Market to provide proof this recovery has legs.
Early signs are promising, with a flood of new projects across all budgets and genres. CAA Media Finance alone has half a dozen finished films on sale and around 20 big packages, including sci-fi actioner Afterburn with Dave Bautista and Samuel L. Jackson attached, selling together with Black Bear; the drama A Big Bold Beautiful Journey from After Yang and Pachinko director Kogonada, featuring Colin Farrell and a post-Barbie Margot Robbie, that 30West and Neon International are jointly handling, and the Michelle Yeoh action thriller The Mother alongside AGC International.

Sydney Sweeney is starring as a twisted Virgin Mary in horror film “Immaculate.”
The “Euphoria” actress leads the Michael Mohan-directed feature, re-teaming with her “The Voyeurs” director. The official synopsis reads: “Cecilia (Sweeney), an American nun of devout faith, embarks on a new journey in a remote convent in the picturesque Italian countryside. Her warm welcome quickly devolves into a nightmare as it becomes clear her new home harbors a sinister secret and unspeakable horrors.”
The trailer shows Cecilia realizing she is pregnant despite her nunhood while fearing the sinsiter potential of the baby growing inside her.
Andrew Lobel penned the script for the Neon film, while Sweeney produces with Jonathan Davino under her Fifty-Fifty Films production banner.
“Immaculate” marks many reunions with Sweeney’s past collaborators: Sweeney and director Mohan first worked together on the Netflix high school comedy series “Everything Sucks!,” while producer David Bernad was behind “The White Lotus.

Neon has acquired North American rights to “Immaculate,” a religious horror film starring Sydney Sweeney.
Sweeney, the star of “Euphoria” and “The White Lotus,” also produced the movie with Black Bear and Middle Child Pictures. Neon is planning a theatrical release on a yet-to-be-determined date.
Directed by Michael Mohan and written by Andrew Lobel, “Immaculate” follows Cecilia (Sweeney), a woman of devout faith who is offered a new role at an illustrious Italian convent. But her warm welcome to the European countryside is soon interrupted as Cecilia discovers her new home harbors some dark and horrifying secrets.
Principal photography wrapped earlier this year. Simona Tabasco (“The White Lotus”), Alvaro Morte (“Money Heist”), Benedetta Porcaroli (“Baby”) and Dora Romano (“The Hand of God”) round out the cast.
Sweeney produced “Immaculate” with Jonathan Davino for Fifty-Fifty Films, alongside Middle Child Pictures’ David Bernad, who developed the project with Sweeney following their work together on “The White Lotus.

Méridien Blues
It was a bumpy start to the AFM’s tenure at new home Le Méridien Delfina. Most industry we spoke to were unhappy about something venue-related whether it be the noisy strikes that took place all week, cost, size of rooms, “maze-like” structure, slow lifts (the fire department was reportedly called Friday to help guests stuck in one of the two lifts serving the hotel’s lobby), parking issues, location or general aesthetic. Talk of alternatives continues to bubble. Miami and Las Vegas were mooted destinations among disgruntled industry. But a reimagined fall market has been a long-running point of discussion and many still think Los Angeles offers more than most cities. AFM organizers IFTA told us they have a multi-year deal with the Méridien so it may be a case of listening, learning and improving where possible.

Daisy Ridley stars as a woman harboring a terrible secret in the feature film adaptation of Karen Dionne’s bestselling novel The Marsh King’s Daughter. The gripping trailer teases a little too much of the plot, so if you want to go in completely unaware of Ridley’s character’s past, don’t click play.
In addition to Daisy Ridley (the Star Wars franchise), the adaptation stars Emmy Award-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Screen Actors Guild nominee Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), Caren Pistorius (Unhinged), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), and Gil Birmingham (Yellowstone).
Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith adapted Dionne’s novel and Neil Burger directed. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon, and Mark L. Smith served as producers. Michael Heimler, Charles Miller, Cliff Roberts, Robert Simonds, Adam Fogelson, John Friedberg, and Samuel J. Brown executive produced. Black Bear provided the finacing.

Adapted from the 2015 novel by Katherine Center, Netflix’s “Happiness for Beginners” largely takes place in the wilderness, where different kinds of people are forced to bond while braving the elements as they hike the Appalachian Trail. Led by “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “The Office” alum Ellie Kemper, the gaggle of goofballs provides laughs of all kinds as well as some heartfelt moments.
Zealous camp guide Bennett (Ben Cook) keeps everything interesting, especially when he scolds Helen (Kemper) for her careless mistakes on the hike and praises Jake (Luke Grimes) for all of his perfect moves in setting up and taking down camp. Nico Santos and Gus Birney even more humor to this romantic comedy story.
Here’s who plays who in “Happiness for Beginners”:
Helen (Ellie Kemper)
Ellie Kemper portrays Helen, who wants to start over after she divorces her husband. She experienced infidelity and a miscarriage during their marriage.
