Doom (2005)

Part DOOM, part something else
4 February 2006
*Warning* This review contains mild spoilers to the GAME, but not the movie.

A dig in the nevada desert have found a portal to an ancient city on mars. Since then, scientists have struggled 20 years to find out more about the civilization that built the city and why they disappeared.

Apparently they found something. In an emergency transmission sent from the science facility on mars a head scientist explains that there is a "level 5 breach" and quarantine procedures must be implemented immediately. A squad of elite soldiers are sent to the science facility on Mars to protect and retrieve property and make sure quarantine is kept. What they find is naturally more than they are trained and equipped for.

This is another game that made it into the silver screen, and the DOOM franchise isn't exactly known for it's multi-depth story lines. This made me seek out and watch this movie with plenty of ice in my stomach, ready to forgive the producers for mistakes they made.

And mistakes were made. The greatest one was of course to change the entire plot. As a gamer who put more value in story than the action, I would personally say that the DOOM3 storyline was better than the movies (completely changed) storyline. In the game the city plays a central role. In the movie you never leave the work areas, you never get to see the old ruins. The city isn't even mentioned beyond the intro. Beyond 2 <10 second scenes, you do not see the Mars exterior. You barely register that these events take place on Mars, not on earth. The artifacts that played a central role in the game is not mentioned or present in the movie. The entire "Hell is loose" plot was completely cut away, the events of the movie blamed onto something *COMPLETELY* different. The theme "one man against hell" became "a few men and their issues". The ghost of the little girl (one of the games scarier parts) did not make it to the move.

DOOM3 was also a horror experience playing both on achluophobia (fear of darkness) and Monophobia (fear of being alone), this was an aspect missing in the movie where areas was lit and the characters was always going at least two and two. I almost think the movie could have been better if they hired less actors and put more money on storywriters.

Another aspect completely gone is the ambient red tone of being on mars, something that could have added a more artistic flavor to the movie. Except for very short moments in the beginning of the movie you never see that these events in fact take place on mars.

I was not happy to see the storyline almost completely changed and the horror downscaled to almost not scary at all with nothing better added to it. There are no deep questions asked here, no philosophical submessage to the audience to go home thinking about. This is a lighthearted actionmovie and that's it.

The most faithful part (to the game) is the labs and the monsters. he developers who made the game gave the areas/monsters/weapons an unique design that wouldn't have been right to move away from. If you care zero about the plot, then yes this is DOOM.

There's also the first person sequence in which we get to follow a series of events through the eyes of a soldier when he runs around and shoot monsters in corridors. It was fun, although I would say that it failed to capture me. I was mostly annoyed with the choice of music and it could have been more scary.

I see some ways this movie could have been made better with the material it's based on, but I did not expect it. At least the action is well done. If you want 2 hours of entertainment that wont change your world, DOOM offers just that. If you do not watch many movies and want some extra quality when spending time on one, you can jump this one.

Game-movies so far are between "awful" and "ok". This one was "ok".

Exactly what the first should have been, and I want more!
30 September 2005
This, my friend, is Dungeons & Dragons. This is not a cinematic masterpiece. This is not Shakespeare. The storyline wont change your future. But it's 1:45h of real entertainment for any Dungeons & Dragons fan.

Unlike the first movie, D&D:Elemental Might go back to the book. Many fantasy movies have wizards and fighters, but I believe the creators actually focused on really bringing the things we recognize from the D&D world into this one. There's a real "party" with classic Dungeons & Dragons professions represented and they really do what is to be expected by their roles. There's real dungeons... There's dragons... and there's even a few unique D&D monsters that is recognized from the books. The villain is more evil. The good is more good. There's heaps and heaps of magic, and even divine magic (which is unique to D&D) plays a great role this time around.

If you ever played D&D and you can accept some budgetcuts on bringing your fantasy to life, get ahold of this movie. If you never played D&D but you are a general fantasy fan, get this movie because it's the most fantasymovie you have seen since Lord of the Rings. If you are neither a fan of fantasy or an oldtime fan of Dungeons & Dragons, you can probably forget about this one and watch something else.

I will buy it and I want to see more D&D movies in the future!

Unforgettable
24 September 2005
I have no words. I do not know where to begin writing a comment for this movie. This is an unique experience. A visit into the future of movie making. At the time writing there's just one other like it and that's the other FF movie, but this leave it's predecessor far behind. Before I continue though, FF and FF:AC have nothing to do with each other. I am only saying predecessor because FF was the first full-length 3d movie with human-like main characters.

Where FF tried to capture perfect 3d modelled humans though, FF:AC focus on beauty and action. Even if the characters are more anime like (large eyes etc) they move more fluid than the stiff characters did in FF. The action is fastpaced, or rather... it's extreme, or rather... it's like a redbull flavored double espresso with crack inside.

So far I have written about the looks. It's because I look at this movie as a milestone in artwork and movie-making. Because of this, the story comes second. Unfortunate, the story is confusing for someone who have not played Final Fantasy 7 (the console game that can be considered the true prequel to FF:AC). Keeping up with the story and what the (¤!¤!¤ is going on is difficult to say the least. Do not expect any realism. The movie even resembles the computer game in how the characters fight. It's also played like an anime, or comic book, as how it "stops the camera" for a second or two in the middle of the action, let the image sink in, and than continue.

If you have played FF7, see it for the story and the visuals. If you have not, see it for the visuals. It's an unique and unmatched experience that make you all bubbling with excitement about the movies of tomorrow. This is like seeing the movies of tomorrow, today.

Not to be taken seriously.
13 November 2003
(english is not my primary language)

This is a movie that tries to be fun. It isnt Narc, Training Day or Dark Blue. It would never win an oscar for script or acting... but it doesnt try to either. If you dont take it seriously, this movie is entertainment that may cheer up a bad day. And its really a piece of eye candy. The director is also involved in "FastLane" and you can see one true connection between the two - colors. McG defenitly likes colors. Everywhere through the movie you see scenes that are filled with shiny, colorful vehicles and clothing, oddly lighted or color-enhanced scenes.

The name of the movie "Full Throttle" couldnt be more true. I do not believe that there are any other movie with such supreme actionscenes and humanly impossible moves. Its so filled with unrealism, that you either must ignore it quickly, or turn off the movie in the first ten minutes. If you do that, you are no fun. Actionscenes involve things like standing on your head of a motorcycle in air, releasing both arms, draw two guns, fire a couple of shots, grab the handle again, and get down on the motorcycle before it reaches the ground. Or what about being pulled by a rope up through the cealing, and taking one of the boards that comes free (in air), and use it to "skate" down a rope on the outside.

Besides the computerenhanced/trickfilmed superactionscenes, this is a comedy. Many scenes are just there for laughs, as when Alex's (Lucy) boyfriend (Matt LeBlanc) tries to explain to Alex's father (John Cleese) what she is doing for a living. Naturally it all sounds like she is an extreme prostitute.

If you like comedy, or unrealisticly beautiful actionscenes, then watch it. If you are looking for a deep psychological drama, ignore it like ebola.

One of the funniest movies ever made
3 October 2002
I loved George of the Jungle first time I saw it, and it still remains one of the funniest movies I have ever seen.

If you are the guy that cant laugh and watch a movie purely for entertainment, this movie is not for you, but if you can loose up and just laugh, this is one of the best.

This movie is of the type that doesnt take anything seriously. Unlike other "cracy comedy" movies like "The Naked Gun", GotJ have a very warm and child-friendly humor that even adults can laugh to.

GotJ is in all a parody of tarzan. A boy is rised by apes, a woman ends up in the same forest, they meet, and fall in love. Adding to the story GotJ is filled with loveable characters (except for George himself). We have the elephant that behaves like a humongous sized dog, the over intelligent talking gorilla, three swahilian carries that always mock the bad white guy (fiance with the woman).

George himself is played by Brendan, mostly fame for his Indiana Jones Lookalike character in "The Mummy". Somewhat beefed up (lots of muscle), not to bright, but an oh so wide happy smile all the time.

I give this movie a 8 of 100. Its not a classic among movies, but it is a classic among comedies.

Formula 51 (2001)
Snatch, Lock Stocking and 51 State
25 May 2002
If you are a fan of Snatch and Lock Stocking, you will defenitly recognize the ingredients of this movie. We have a bunch of people on the wrong side of the law. The characters are divided in pure idiots, insane people, and thoose that just have no luck at all, and everyone speaks a unique accent...

51 State is about a skilled chemist who created the ultimate drug, and becouse of a bad relationship with his first buyers he decides to sell the drug in liverpool. From then, everything flips, everything goes wrong, everywhere, and the chemist is generally more lucky than the rest of the sad bunch of people involved in the plot.

The movie doesnt really reach the instant classic award as Snatch and Lock Stock, but I defenitly disagree with those that ever call this movie inoriginal. If you forget the similarities to Snatch and Lock Stock, you cannot find a single movie that contains so much originality. Besides, its fun. I laughed several times while watching it.
