Groundhog Day (1993)
Enjoyable light, but possibly doesnt stand test of time
Watching this for the first time, the plot was obviously enough to keep me going, and it's fun to see how Bill M keeps using the day in different ways.
Beyond that though, I struggled with a lot of this. Murrays character is genuinely an a**, manipulative in a way that just isnt fun to watch 30 years later.
Worth a watch once if you havent yet, but probably not worth a repeat
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Wow! I only regret not watching this as a child
One of my movie blindspots from my childhood, came into this with an open mind, prepping myself to maybe not enjoy so much as it is a children's film essentially.
But I was very wrong. The humour was on point, had me giggling, and no doubt would have had child me in stitches.
But I wasnt prepared the emotional warmth - the bond between boo and Scully is genuinely heartwarming, and the end scenes had me welling up.
Any film that mixes emotional depth and comedy so seamlessly should get high accolade, and even more so as an animated film. Bravo!
The Terminator (1984)
Possibly awesome at time, but nearly 40 years later?
My take from this was a film that's key draw is the cinematic experience and thrill of the chase of being chased down by a futuristic cyborg. Like many things though, the cgi ages massively, even if that's an unfair criticism to make (though star wars earlier than this, shows it doesnt need to be the case). Towards the end sequence, this really shows.
Only thing I'd say is the protagonists arent the most likeable characters, so it makes it a little bit harder to root for them which is I guess the aim of the narrative.
But overall it's an enjoyable and simple hollywood watch, and sure it would have been even greater at the time.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
Can see why it's a classic!
I went into this expecting a macho, Eastwood-esque shoot gun film, but pleasantly surprised.
The plot was interesting to keep me hooked, but simple enough as to not distract from the real draw, that is the dialogue which was on absolutely on point, and general ambience of the film.
Would definitely recommend, up there in my faves from this era
Aladdin (1992)
Enjoyable enough, though not a true Disney classic
I revisited this film as an adult, having watched as a child but forgotten how it went. That made sense as I rewatched, it's a pleasant film to watch, with a simple enough plot, and the genie definitely is largely responsible for that.
Its short, and as a result does the job of a nice easy watch. I would say also it hasn't aged incredibly well from 1992, e.g. pretty superficial and can see why it can give a damaging message to children on body image and status and what not.
