Not many people seem to like Paul Thomas Anderson's latest tale of human drama, which isn't surprising given the entirely different and untraveled paths he takes in many of his decisions on the film. The plot takes a backseat to its characters, the story arc is largely abandoned in favor of the human drama of the film, and its characters are often so elusive that many will be hard pressed to fully figure them out.
It's all of those things and more that make The Master such a brilliant film. It breaks its own model, it journeys into wholly unnerving territories, and does so with a skillful execution that many directors can't even begin to attain.
