Jean-Paul Vignon, the romantic French vocalist and actor who impressed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic during an eight-decade career, died March 22 of liver cancer in Beverly Hills, his family announced. He was 89.
Performing a repertoire of contemporary pop and American standards, Vignon debuted in the U.S. in 1963 at the famed New York supper club The Blue Angel, where he opened for stand-up comic Woody Allen.
Ed Sullivan would soon showcase him on his Sunday night CBS variety show in eight appearances — including one in which he sang a duet with young Liza Minnelli — and he became a regular guest on Johnny Carson and Merv Griffin’s programs.
Signed to Columbia Records, Vignon released his first U.S. album, Because I Love You, in 1964. Three years later, he had a supporting role opposite William Holden and Cliff Robertson in the World War II film The Devil’s Brigade.

Australian satirist Barry Humphries, known for his onstage and TV drag persona Edna Everage and for his character Sir Les Patterson, has died. He was 89.
The BBC reported that Humphries had been in hospital in Sydney, Australia, and had been suffering from complications following surgery in March.
“A great wit, satirist, writer and an absolute one-of-kind, he was both gifted and a gift,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said following the news of Humphries’ death.
“Rip Barry Humphries – one of the greatest ever Australians – and a comic genius who used his exuberant alter egos, Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson, to say the otherwise unsayable. Also an infallibly brilliant Spectator contributor. What a loss,” said former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Twitter.

By the time “Queer for Fear” gets to Alfred Hitchcock, the Shudder docu-series has already outed Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, “Nosferatu” director F.W. Murnau, “Frankenstein” director James Whale, and Michael Feinstein (as a huge horror fan). Subtitled “The History of Queer Horror,” the four-part series traces the queer origins of the horror genre, from its genesis with Shelley’s “Frankenstein” all the way to “American Horror Story.” Though the methods change over the decades — the otherness of early monsters gives way to Hitchcock’s not-so-subtle subtext which leads to the outright sex appeal of “The Hunger” — the thread is there all along.
Through four jam-packed and fascinating episodes, “Queer for Fear” makes its case resoundingly clear: The history of queer horror is the history of horror itself. That’s something the show’s executive producer Bryan Fuller, creator of “Hannibal,” “Pushing Daisies,” and “Star Trek: Discovery,” suspected all along.

Judy Garland, who would have turned 100 years old this week, wasn’t just billed as “the world’s greatest entertainer” – in her time, she really was.
Garland was much more than just little Dorothy Gale from Kansas who once had an adventure in far-off Oz. She spent 45 of her 47 years in show business, eventually making 34 feature films and more than 200 radio appearances, releasing 80 singles and 12 albums, making 60 TV appearances (including 30 of her own shows), and doing 1,100 concerts.
“She had the amazing ability to convey joy and pathos and humor and sincerity and honesty,” says author and Emmy-winning producer John Fricke (“Judy Garland: A Portrait in Art and Anecdote”), “yet by giving of herself on that level, she had no guard, no protective shield. She was a million percent vulnerable.”

Everything is coming up Judy Garland this year because the beloved performer was born a century ago on June 10th. TCM is making Garland its “Star of the Month” and the Criterion Channel is offering its own retrospective. Warner Archive is releasing three of her films on Blu-Ray: 1941’s “Ziegfeld Girl”; 1942’s “For Me and My Gal” and 1945’s “The Clock.” There are many celebrations taking place around the country in honor of her centennial including at the Judy Garland Museum in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where Garland is now buried. And there’s even a new perfume — “Judy-a Garland Fragrance by Vincenzo Spinnato” — that will be unveiled at a birthday gala in Los Angeles.
I don’t know about you, but I converted to “Judy-ism” at the age of five when I first saw her beloved 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz” on TV.

Liza Minnelli fans were concerned about her health based on her appearance at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, when she presented the best picture Oscar to “Coda.” But today, her longtime friend Michael Feinstein posted an Instagram video that he shot in the car with Minnelli right before the Oscars ceremony, his representative comfirmed. Minnelli appears energetic, lively, and clearly excited to be on her way to the event, breaking into song with the Great American Songbook rarity “(It’s Gonna Be) A Great Day” by Vincent Youmans, Edward Eliscu, and Billy Rose.
Since Feinstein posted his video to Instagram, it’s been reposted on Twitter, going a bit viral among her fans who are heartened to see the artist boisterous and full of life. One Twitter commentator wrote, “The cigarette, the sleeves, the broken broadway voice. This is a visual handbook on camp.”

A longtime friend of Liza Minnelli says the Hollywood icon didn’t need a wheelchair at the Oscars but was forced to appear in one anyway.
Minelli appeared in the wheelchair alongside Lady Gaga to present the final award of the night. Their on-stage banter earned huge cheers from the audience, as did a quiet moment between the pair, when Gaga whispered “I got you” after Minnelli seemed to have a bit of trouble reading the teleprompter.
But according to singer Michael Feinstein, Minnelli never needed or wanted a wheelchair. She had requested a director’s chair.
“That whole thing was — she was sabotaged,” Feinstein said on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show” on Tuesday. “That’s a terrible word to use, but she only agreed to appear on the Oscars if she would be in the director’s chair, because she’s been having back trouble.”

The 2022 Oscars ceremony had been torpedoed more than an hour prior courtesy of Will Smith, but when it finally came time to announce the Best Picture Oscar well after 11:00 pm Et, viewers were equally heartened and also a little stunned to see Liza Minnelli on stage with Lady Gaga.
Minnelli, a 1973 Oscar winner herself for “Cabaret,” appeared onstage in a wheelchair, brought out by friend Lady Gaga, to announce “Coda” as the winner of the night’s final honor. Now, in a recent interview on SiriusXM’s “The Jess Cagle Show,” her longtime friend Michael Feinstein claims Minnelli was “forced” to appear on stage in the wheelchair despite having initially requested to be in a director’s chair.

Grammy-nominated jazz songwriter, singer and pianist Dave Frishberg died yesterday, according to a post on his Facebook page. His wife April Magnusson said he had been battling an illness for several years. He was 88.
Frishberg had a long and varied career that stretched from the Greenwich Village jazz scene of the ’50s to work as a studio musician in L.A. in the ’70s, to cutting his own Grammy-nominated albums and doing music for films and TV.
But his greatest fame came from his involvement with Schoolhouse Rock, a 1973-85 series of Saturday-morning shorts on ABC that used music and rhyme to help kids learn basic facts, with such memorable songs as “Elementary, My Dear”, “Conjunction Junction” and Frishberg’s “I’m Just a Bill”. “I’m Just a Bill” was famously spoofed on Saturday Night Live in 2014.

The series follows three women in three different decades — Ginnifer Goodwin’s ’60s housewife Beth-Ann, Lucy Liu’s ’80s socialite Simone, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste’s present-day attorney (with an open marriage) — who all live in the same house in Pasadena, all deal with infidelity in their marriages, and are all, somehow, involved in a death.
You can sign up for a CBS All Access subscription here. Plans start at $5.99 a month with limited commercials all the way up to commercial free for $9.99 a month,...

"She's original, she's not like anybody else." Abramorama recently debuted the first official trailer for Kaye Ballard: The Show Goes On!, a documentary film about the famed actress Kaye Ballard. This originally premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival last year, and debuts virtually next month. Their description explains: "This charming documentary showcases the career of musical-comedy sensation Kaye Ballard, whose ability to sing and tell jokes was ubiquitous in the late 20th century. Delightful moments are captured in rare archival footage and interviews with Ann-Margret, Michael Feinstein and Ballard herself." After an extraordinary career in the arts, Ballard unfortunately passed away early last year at the age of 93. "The film sparkles with the energy of the era of entertainers whose skills had to bridge vaudeville to theater, radio to film, and television variety shows to sit coms." If you're interested in a fascinating actress, give this a watch.

Judy Garland’s star power has never waned, and her light is shining especially bright ahead of the biopic “Judy,” which premieres today, with Renee Zellweger starring as the iconic performer.
Fifty years since her death, artists still look to the beloved “Wizard of Oz” star as a pinnacle of stardom. Indeed, her legendary performance of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in “Oz” and her Oscar-nominated starring role in the 1954 film “A Star Is Born” arguably would have cemented her legacy on their own. And some 50 years after her death from an accidental drug overdose, her work and her story continue to resonate with millions of people. These stars, whose love for Garland’s work is well-documented, are just a few.
Sam Smith
Smith, who sings alongside Zellweger in the brand-new single “Get Happy” from the “Judy” soundtrack, said in a statement that they were first introduced to Garland when they were 17 years old.

“Why Women Kill” creator Marc Cherry discovered there’s more than one way to murder a husband when faced with developing his main titles. In the series starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Lucy Liu, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste, situations of marital infidelity lead to death in three separate storylines across three different decades. Cherry spoke to IndieWire about trying to encapsulate his tongue-in-cheek mystery series without giving anything away in the opening sequence.
“I had never done this before, but I wrote a main title sequence into the pilot. It was just a series of women killing men,” he said. “In my original conception, I had eight sequences. We were going to shoot it live action, but then we were presented with how big the budget would be to kill different men in different eras, and we were going over it.”

Perhaps inspired and emboldened by Angelina Jolie’s record setting $24.5 million purchase of the multi-acre Cecil B. DeMille estate in the gated and heavily celebrified Laughlin Park enclave in Los Angeles’s ever-more expensive Los Feliz area last year, five-time Grammy nominated multi-platinum entertainer Michael Feinstein, former assistant to Ira Gershwin and self-styled “Ambassador of The Great American Songbook,” seeks to set a new neighborhood record with the gutsy, publicity assuring $26 million price tag he’s hung on his opulently appointed longtime residence less than a mile away in the well-to-do Los Feliz foothills just below The Griffith Park Observatory.
Set nicely above the street on a half-acre corner parcel at the head of a double-gated horseshoe drive where it enjoys an over-the-treetops city lights view and yet is almost entirely obscured behind a high brick wall, imposing iron gates and a riot of trees and foliage, the 15,391-square-foot, 1926 Tudor Revival mansion,...
