This article marks Part 2 of the Gold Derby series reflecting on Horror Films at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the spine-tingling movies that earned Academy Awards nominations, including the following films from the 1960s and 1970s.
Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Psycho” (1960) was met with enormous critical and commercial success upon release emerging the second-highest grossing film of the year, just behind Stanley Kubrick‘s “Spartacus.” Alas, the film was also greeted to a somewhat cool reception at the Oscars. “Psycho” did muster four nominations, in Best Director (Hitchcock’s fifth and final career bid), Best Supporting Actress (Janet Leigh), Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. Notably absent was Anthony Perkins, unforgettable as Norman Bates. Leigh, who won the Golden Globe for her performance, was ultimately defeated by Shirley Jones (“Elmer Gantry”). The film also failed to win on any of its other three nominations.

Most people think that snobby Oscar voters through the decades have turned their backs on the horror genre. Not so. True, far more horror flicks have been nominated for Oscars — including many Alfred Hitchcock movies — than have won. Hitch was nominated six times for Best Director and never took home a gold statue, which is why he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1968. “Thank you,” he said, and walked offstage.
We scoured the record books to find 25 Oscar-winning horror movies, and herewith rank them for you.
After heated arguments among the IndieWire staff, we threw out a dozen or so monster movies (“King Kong,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Jurassic Park”), ghost films (“Ghost”) and scary psychological thrillers like Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” that just didn’t feel like horror flicks to us.
Defining a horror movie is subjective. Is it about gore and guts and supernatural beings, or how it makes you feel?...

A&E has released a fantastic new trailer for the fifth and final season of Bates Motel, and we are in for one hell of an intense season! The new trailer offers up a ton of crazy and exciting new footage from the upcoming season including our first real look at Rihanna as Marion Crane. It looks like this final season will end up taking us through the events of Alfred Hitchcock's film, and it will be interesting to see how they portray the legendary shower scene. We know it's going to be in the series, but will it take a different approach than Hitchcock's vision or will it be a shot-for-shot remake of what Hitchcock did? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
This is a great trailer, and I'm so excited to see this series come to a close. I've also included a full synopsis...

That wait is now over.
Originally unveiled by EW, two new images of Rihanna as Marion Crane have been revealed, as well as a teaser trailer that features fresh looks at familiar faces who will cross paths with Norman in season 5, including Caleb, Chick, and Alex Romero.

The first trailer for Bates Motel season five has been released and it's definitely got an unnerving creepy vibe. It looks like this final season is going to finish off the series strong. I love this trailer as it's the perfect set up for what's to come! A&E also released a full synopsis that offers us some intriguing details, like the fact that season five is set two years after the events of season four, and a lot has happened. Most importantly, Norman has descended deeper into madness.
Bates Motel Season 5 concludes the contemporary prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Fans watched as Norman’s dangerous transformation came full circle when he methodically murdered his beloved mother, Norma, in the final gut-wrenching episodes of season four. Now,...

I must confess that I was unfamiliar with Marilyn Sotto’s work until I received an e-mail blast from her devoted nephew, longtime Disney Imagineer Eddie Sotto, about her recent passing. I was so touched by his tribute that I asked if he would allow me to share it with a wider audience on my website, and he agreed. Here it is: "It’s with great sadness that I pass on that yesterday, October 27, at 4:12 pm, my Aunt, ex Disney Costume Designer Marilyn Sotto-Erdmann lost her fight with Cancer at age 82. As you may know, Marilyn brought us skills she honed after several decades in the film industry working as an illustrator for costume designers Edith Head, Jean Louis, Norma Koch and...

Norma Bengell controversies (photo: Norma Bengell in Walter Hugo Khouri’s ‘Eros’) (See previous post: “Dead at 78: Norma Bengell, First Actress to Go Full Frontal in Mainstream Films.”) Norma Bengell found herself embroiled in numerous controversies throughout her life. For instance, besides her not infrequently "scandalous" anti-establishment screen roles of the ’60s and ’70s, she took to the streets to protest against both censorship in the arts and Brazil’s military dictatorship. At the 1985 edition of Rio de Janeiro’s Fest Rio, Bengell got into a verbal match with American actress and fellow jury member Ellen Burstyn (Oscar winner for Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore) following alleged improprieties at the festival’s awards ceremony and Bengell’s role in the jury. Presumably to justify her worth as a jury member, the native Portuguese-speaker Bengell bellowed in Spanish: "I am a great actress!" Norma Bengell: Controversial filmmaker In later years,...

It was an unpredictable night in several major categories: In addition to The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels taking home the trophy for Best Actor in a Drama and Boardwalk Empire’s Bobby Cannavale winning for Supporting Actor, Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever were surprise winners — Wever was so shocked that she practically ran off the stage without delivering an acceptance speech.

Maybe, just maybe, Louis C.K. can do it. Bring home the Emmy for Best Comedy Series, that is.
Comedian Louis C.K.’s free form FX show, Louie, got six Emmy nominations with its biggest score in the category for Outstanding Comedy Series. Us horror fans have a tendency to glamorize what we like to refer to as "the good old days", and rip on anything that came after those days passed by. We're constantly ranting and raving about how things "aren't what they used to be", and wishing we could travel back to a time when it was more awesome to be a horror fan.
While it's true that a time period like the 1980s was more suited to folks like us, there's no denying that there is no better time to be a collector of horror movie inspired toys than right now...in this very moment. The market is absolutely flooded with highly detailed miniature plastic versions of some of the most beloved characters in horror, both past and present, and that my friends is a beautiful thing. No, you may not be able to head out to your local Toys...
