It may not be too much of an exaggeration to say that Jim Henson came up with the concept for an immersive video dome long before Sphere bubbled up in Las Vegas.
In the mid-1960s he developed an idea for a nightclub he called Cyclia – “the entertainment experience of the future” – that would feature crystal panels throughout the ceiling, floor and walls onto which films would be projected.
“Once an hour, a woman in a white leotard would rise from a pedestal in the center of the floor to have film projected on her body as she danced,” writes author Brian Jay Jones in Jim Henson: A Biography.
For better or worse, the psychedelia-inspired concept never became a reality. But it’s an example of the restless imagination that propelled Henson throughout his life. The incredible range of Henson’s creative urges come into focus in Ron Howard’s documentary Jim Henson Idea Man,...

It is always nice whenever past creatives are highlighted for how they helped shape not only their careers but also the lives of others around them. One of those creatives was Jim Henson, a pioneer in children’s entertainment and puppetry. His life and career are the subject matter of an upcoming documentary, Jim Henson Idea Man, which just released its first trailer.
The upcoming Disney+ documentary will explore Henson’s early days crafting puppets by hand to having his name become one of the biggest in family entertainment. Interviews with his fellow creatives, actors, and family all shed light on his life and career.
Jim Henson started working on things such as the infamous Wilken’s Coffee commercials. He would eventually craft several characters who eventually became the cast of the world-renowned Muppets. Many of the characters would appear on various talk shows and sketch comedy shows before eventually becoming their own brand.

Dolly Parton got her big break on The Porter Wagoner Show. During her tenure on the program, she became a country star and set herself up for a lengthy and fruitful solo career. Though it was a helpful part of her rise, it was not always an easy one. Parton once joked that she could understand how Kermit the Frog felt after her years with Wagoner.
Dolly Parton said work with Porter Wagoner wasn’t easy
In 1967, Parton began appearing regularly on The Porter Wagoner Show. While his audience initially resented her for replacing singer Norma Jean, they eventually welcomed her with open arms. Soon, she began recording songs and traveling with him. They had such chemistry that rumors began to fly about an affair between them. Behind the scenes, though, their relationship was a constant challenge.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" might be considered the most lighthearted show in the vast canon of "Trek." It's a series that returned to an episodic structure, allowing its stories to conclude at the end of an hour, rather than stretching them across an entire season -- and sometimes well past their breaking point. The old-world structure has allowed the showrunners to experiment with genre in ways not previously tried on "Star Trek." One episode may be a body-swap comedy, while the next is a terse horror tale. There are a few steely, soul-crushing wartime dramas sprinkled throughout, but their headiness is leavened by lightweight time-travel stories, party-animated crossovers, and an episode in which Spock becomes a human and eats too much bacon. The most notorious "Strange New Worlds" episode is likely "Subspace Rhapsody," a full-on musical.

When Simone Ashley chatted with The Hollywood Reporter at the Sundance Film Festival alongside her 10 Lives co-star Mo Gilligan and director Chris Jenkins, she revealed a hidden talent.
Ashley stars in the animated film as Rose, a student who is a doting cat mom to Beckett (voiced by Gilligan). For 10 Lives, the Bridgerton star used her natural voice, but she’s looking forward to the opportunity to show off her knack for impressions.
“I would love to do a character one day with all these different kinds of tonalities in their voice. Like Stitch. She then took on Stitch’s voice perfectly, impressing Jenkins and Gilligan.

The third "Muppets" feature film and, sadly, the last one that creator Jim Henson and puppeteer Richard Hunt worked on prior to their untimely deaths, "Manhattan" sees Kermit and the gang graduating from college and headed to New York City in the hopes of turning their humble little stage musical, "Manhattan Melodies," into a Broadway sensation. “Stop Making Sense,” the Talking Heads concert film breathlessly directed by the late, great Jonathan Demme, is returning to theaters this fall, newly restored for its 40th-ish anniversary (the movie actually came out in 1984 but was filmed in 1983).
While a re-release of “Stop Making Sense,” overseen by A24, is exciting, perhaps even more exciting is the fact that the band will reunite at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, September 11 for a chat moderated by Spike Lee. Lee directed the filmed version of David Byrne’s “American Utopia” for HBO.
Byrne will be joined by Jerry Harrison and the still-married Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth on stage. The chat will be live-broadcast for a special Global IMAX Live event that same night; the movie will then be in IMAX theaters exclusively on September 22 and everywhere September 29 “in a pristine new 4K restoration,” according to A24.

But no, instead the baton seemed to fall primarily to people whose management didn’t get the memo that this was the most uncool gig ever: Americans!

The Masked Singer made its American debut in 2019 after getting its start in South Korea. The show, which features celebrities singing songs while wearing head-to-toe costumes, hosts panelists who interpret clues in order to try and guess the singers’ identities.
The show has been a huge hit since its premiere, winning or being nominated for numerous awards. But concealing the singers’ identities until each reveal takes an extraordinary amount of effort. This includes some rather bizarre rules.

Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus‘ 2017 collaboration “Rainbowland” got 86’d from a first-grade spring concert setlist after school district officials in Wisconsin deemed the track controversial.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the parent of a first grader in Waukesha, Wisconsin, was excited about the Parton-Cyrus collab, along with some of the other songs slated to be part of the spring concert, which included Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World and Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie.
As for why the track that celebrates acceptance was banned from the spring concert, one parent told The Times that “the school district of Waukesha has really cracked down on anything LGBTQ” and that “this song being an ‘issue’ has not in any way come as a surprise.”

As for why the track that celebrates acceptance was banned from the spring concert, one parent told The Times that “the school district of Waukesha has really cracked down on anything LGBTQ” and that “this song being an ‘issue’ has not in any way come as a surprise.”

“All my friends have worked with the Muppets. Everybody I know has done a thing with the Muppets and I always felt a little bit left out,” Michael Caine told Et in 1992 on the set of The Muppet Christmas Carol, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. “But they only did half-hour television shows and I got to do a two-hour movie, so it's great.”
While Caine donned the trademark robes and night cap to portray Ebenezer Scrooge, the reimagining of the Charles Dickens classic also featured Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Fozzie as Mr. Fozziewig (modified from Fezziwig), Miss Piggy as Mrs. Cratchit and Gonzo as Dickens, who hilariously narrates the story with Rizzo the Rat. Despite the recognizable names and faces, some voices of the characters would sound a little different to Muppet fans.

Sounds like Chrissy Teigen might have gotten under Kermit the Frog’s skin a little bit, figuratively if not literally. The “Lip Sync Battle” host and the “Sesame Street” icon got into a mild social-media spat on Thursday, after Teigen declared that she was glad she never had the famous frog’s image permanently inked onto her body. The semi-heated back-and-forth began when Teigen told her 7.5 million Twitter followers that she dodged a lifetime of regret when she opted not to get a Kermit tattoo when she was younger. When you think of Quentin Tarantino, classic films like “Reservoir Dogs,” “Pulp Fiction,” and “Django Unchained” certainly come to mind. But what about the critically reviled “Saturday Night Live” sketch adaptation “It’s Pat”? Or the Michael Bay Alcatraz action movie “The Rock”? Tarantino’s fingerprints have been all over the movies ever since his breakout debut in 1992, and some of his projects are way more bizarre than others.

Steve Whitmire voiced Kermit the Frog for 27 years — and now, he’s concerned about the future of the beloved green Muppet.
Whitmire, 57, was let go by Disney in October due to what officials claimed was “unacceptable business conduct.” Family members of the late Muppets creator Jim Henson have also spoken out about the firing, with Jim’s son Brian telling The Hollywood Reporter that Whitmire used his status as the famous frog to make “outrageous demands” and often “played brinkmanship,” which he was told to stop as far back as the mid-1990s.

It really isn’t easy being green, apparently.
Kermit the Frog will sound slightly different next time you hear him: Longtime voice actor Steve Whitmire has left the Muppets and will no longer provide the voice of the iconic green frog after 27 years on the job.
Disney’s Muppet Studio confirmed the news to Muppets fan site ToughPigs, stating that “Steve Whitmire is no longer working with the Muppets. Matt Vogel will be the new performer for Kermit the Frog.”
As a puppeteer, Whitmire first joined the Muppet family back in 1978 with the original Muppet Show. When creator Jim Henson passed away in 1990, Whitmire took over as the voice of Kermit the Frog. Most recently, he voiced Kermit on ABC’s short-lived sitcom The Muppets, along with characters like Beaker, Rizzo the Rat and elderly heckler Statler.
Vogel has been with the Muppets since 1996, and is currently the performer behind Camilla the Chicken and Sesame Street‘s The Count.

We talk to Frank Oz and the other original Muppeteers about creating characters, watching them evolve, and giving them sentience.
After a few moving documentaries about individual puppeteers, this year’s SXSW debuted a new documentary directed by Frank Oz called Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets of the Show the Whole World Watched. The film is an hour-long free form discussion with Jerry Nelson (The Count, Mr. Snuffleupagus), Dave Goelz (Gonzo, Bunsen Honeydew), Fran Brill (Zoe, Prairie Dawn), and Bill Barretta (Pepe, Tree-Face-Guy) loosely moderated by Oz. Because it features so many of the key personalities that have been only briefly touched upon in spotlight docs on Big Bird or Elmo, it’s a must-watch for any Muppet Show obsessive who wants to hear about what it’s like being buried in a room under a fire pit so they could perform a song with John Denver.
You wouldn’t know it from the way they talk...

Filmed in 2012 but proving timeless, Frank Oz’s loving and free-wheeling “Muppet Guys Talking: Secrets Behind the Show the Whole World Watched” is a must-see not only for Muppet fans and the people who made them, but for anyone seeking insight into the power of creativity.
Its title is nearly longer than its 65-minute runtime, but that’s a fine length for a doc that plays like a snappy conversation between pals. Oz assembled said “Muppet Guys” (Oz plus Muppet maestros Jerry Nelson, Dave Goelz, Fran Brill, and Bill Barretta) for an unprecedented gabfest, all filmed and assembled into a satisfying inside look at the people behind (and sometimes under) the world’s most beloved puppets. In his introduction, Oz promises a look at “the spirit of The Muppets,” and “Muppet Guys Talking” delivers on that claim.

Here are a couple of great clips from an episode of The Muppet Show in 1977 with the legendary Vincent Price as a guest on the show. He and Kermit the Frog talk about how he is able to turn into a vampire. It’s hilariously charming and at one point Kermit turns into a vampire and attacks Price.
I grew up watching Vincent Price horror movies, but I had never seen this clip before now. I just thought it was the coolest thing, so I had to share it with you in case any of you haven’t seen it either. Enjoy!

When most people think of the best puppetry filmmaking has to offer, they usually think of the whimsy and heart of “The Muppets” or “Sesame Street.” The Jim Henson Company’s work is revered worldwide, and the feeling Kermit or Elmo can give to an audience as they perform a tune or dance a number is nothing short of magical.
Becky Sloan and Joseph Pelling are aware of this feeling. Their web series, “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared,” which just released its sixth episode, subverts the Henson musical experience. Under the guise of that cheerful tone, they tell stories with puppets who discover the world and become uncomfortable, disturbed, and, well, scared.

Last month, I spoke with new Muppets showrunner Kristin Newman about her plans to bring the characters back to their roots. Those ideas all sounded promising, but how well were they executed? Well, tonight's episode was the first she was involved with from beginning to end (though she did some rewriting on the last episode to air back in December), and I have some thoughts on whether it lived up to expectations coming up just as soon as I sell oven mitts on Etsy... Self-awareness has always been a key part of the Muppets formula. The Muppet Show was a backstage showbiz comedy, The Muppet Movie featured the characters making and watching a movie about how they first met (and the script for the movie itself becomes a plot device), Kermit and the others in The Great Muppet Caper commented about what part of the movie they were in, and...

Take a look at an early clip of tonight's episode of "The Muppets", where Dave Grohl and Animal go head-to-head in an epic drum-off. Dave Grohl, the lead singer of the Foo Fighters and the former drummer of Nirvana, guest stars on "The Muppets" this week, along side actor Joseph-Gordon Levitt. Grohl can be seen facing off against Animal in the clip below. Dave Grohl previously appeared in "The Muppets" 2011 movie as Animal's replacement drummer. The last time a drum-off was featured on a late night show was in May 2014, when actor Will Ferrell and Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer Chad Smith drummed-off to "Don't Fear the Reaper" on the "Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon". The new Muppets series has drawn some controversy for its 'adult' tone, but series co-creator Bill Prady has insisted that the intention was "to very much honour" the original Muppet Show.

"The goal here is to be exactly the same and completely different," Prady told Digital Spy. "That is what we are trying to do. [Our intention] is to very much honour The Muppet Show – but at the same time, do something that is contemporary and works on television now."
Fellow series boss Bob Kushell said that his and Prady's "very clear vision" was to appeal to both Muppets newcomers and long-time fans.
