As Phoebe Cates’ character Kate Beringer in Gremlins famously monologued, the holidays tend to drudge up painful memories and sorrow for many. In the spirit of unhappy holidays, the 4th day of Creepmas is dedicated to Christmas horror movies that aren’t afraid to showcase the grimmer side of the holiday season.
Forget about holiday cheer; these holiday horror movies – in order from somber to soul-crushing (and skin-crawling)- will make you give thanks that you’re not in the protagonists’ shoes.
The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 4 grim Christmas horror movies that will leave you feeling hopeless for the unhappiest of holidays.
Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Back in 2012, Bloody Disgusting acquired Lucky McKee’s critically acclaimed The Woman after a firestorm of controversy that began at the Sundance Film Festival with a woman allegedly passing out in shock and this man losing his cool over the startling and uncomfortable content.
“This film outta be confiscated [and] burned. There’s no value in showing this to anyone,” he exclaimed.
Now, the film is coming back to us via Arrow Films and is now streaming on our very own Screambox alongside the film’s prequel, Offspring, both featuring a standout performance by Pollyanna McIntosh.
Evil lurks behind a suburban American family in this darkly disturbing film that at once outraged and thrilled critics across the country. Three horror classics have just landed on the Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox streaming service, which already is celebrating a massive August that kicked off with the Ghostbusters-inspired Ghastly Brothers.
Richard Attenborough’s Magic (1978) starring Anthony Hopkins and a psychotic ventriloquist dummy is the first of three movies added to Screambox, courtesy of Shout! Factory.
“Written by William Goldman, adapted from the novel he also wrote, Magic revolves around a ventriloquist seeking to renew a relationship with his former high school sweetheart,” Meagan Navarro previously wrote about the classic. “The only problem is that his dummy is the jealous type. That ventriloquist, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins. Unlike most killer doll horror movies, Magic favors the psychological, and Hopkins brings intensity to this twisted love story.”
She notes that this movie served as an inspiration for Don Mancini’s original Child’s Play screenplay and is currently celebrating its 45th anniversary!

My to-be-read pile is shamefully big, but that never stops me from adding more. I cherish getting lost in a good book, but a novel is more of a commitment than chipping away at movies on my to-watch list. The conspicuously titled 101 Horror Books to Read Before You’re Murdered may make that stack of books to read even more intimidating, but it also helps narrow down which tales of terror are worthy of being moved to the top.
Following a foreword by Bird Box author Josh Malerman, writer Sadie “Mother Horror” Hartmann explains why you should trust her choices implicitly. As the owner of the horror fiction subscription service Night Worms and the editor-in-chief of publisher Dark Hart Books, she’s an unassailable authority on horror literature — even if she’s a self-proclaimed scaredy cat who rarely watches genre movies.

Cannibalism has emerged as the genre du jour in horror. With the success of last year’s Fresh and Bones and All as well as the second season of Yellowjackets finally digging into the human flesh, everyone seems to be exploring this taboo topic. From nightmare survival scenarios to narcissistic serial killers, these films follow humans or humanoid monsters who consume human flesh in one way or another. Some butcher and cook the meat, while others eat it from the bone, but all cannibal films offer a window into a world of depravity and a fascinating blend of horror and revulsion. We not only fear being eaten ourselves, but we often find ourselves imagining what the meat would taste like should we dare (or be forced) to take a bite.
Films about cannibals may seem like a rare delicacy, but a closer look reveals that the pickens are not so slim.

Ahead of the UK digital release of his feature film Monstrous (read our review here), writer/director Chris Sivertson talks about the joy of working with Christina Ricci, monstrous inspirations and why horror films are our modern-day fairy tales.
What drew you to take the helm on Monstrous, given that you usually direct films you’ve either written or co-written?
Christina Ricci was already attached to the script when it came to me so that was a huge draw. I’ve loved her as an actress for decades and have always admired the interesting choices she makes in material. Then I got even more excited when I read the script. I just thought it was a beautiful and emotional story and it clicked perfectly with my sensibilities. I saw pretty clearly what I could bring to it as a filmmaker.
You drew a magnificent performance from Christina Ricci. What was it like directing her?...

Of the many wonderful things found in writer/director Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift last year, chief among them was the return of star Angela Bettis to genre movies. Once a prolific presence in indie horror—thanks in large part to her frequent collaborations with writer/director Lucky McKee—the Texas-born Bettis had stepped away from horror for several years following her turn in McKee’s The Woman and a brief role on Tom Holland’s anthology Twisted Tales. She continued to act, but was sorely missed in the genre. Thanks to Grant and 12 Hour Shift, Bettis is back.
It’s the aforementioned working relationship with Lucky McKee for which most horror fans probably know Bettis best. A working actor on television, film, and even Broadway for several years before she was cast in May in 2002, it was her role as the title character in McKee’s feature...

Genre star Pollyanna McIntosh has been tied to Jack Ketchum’s feral ‘Woman’ for the best part of a decade by this point, first taking on the character all the way back in 2009. And whilst this third outing for the particularly likeable, if nameless cannibal sees her take something of a narrative backseat, this lean, mean, teen-focussed horror drama is actually all the better for it.
That isn’t to say that McIntosh’s many talents aren’t put to good use (Darlin’ marks her feature debut as a writer/director), but this is a particularly timely film that draws its dark laughs, shredding tension and just general all-round nastiness, from a very different well to its precursors.
Darlin’ instead focusses mostly on the eponymous daughter of the Cleek family (those chirpy suburbanites from McKee’s film), years-on from the massacre that’s left her following in the footsteps of McIntosh’s savage tribeswoman.

The sequel to Lucky McKee's 2011 film The Woman, (itself a sequel to 2009's Offspring) sees Pollyanna McIntosh returning to the role of The Woman, as well as taking up directing and writing duties. The films are based on a series of Jack Ketchum novels about a clan of violent feral cannibals who roam the northeast coast of America, clashing with so-called 'civilised' people - and often exposing them as the real monsters. Darlin' tries to capture some of the grim satire and feminist rage of McKee's film, but ultimately fails to live up to this promise.
In The Woman, McIntosh's eponymous cannibal was captured by an all-American family and chained up in their barn. It didn't end well for them. Now, it's eight years later, and we find McIntosh and her teenage '...

Though his books were seldom issued by major publishing houses, recently deceased author Jack Ketchum has become one of the big screen’s more frequently adapted U.S. novelists. “Darlin’” isn’t based on a Ketchum tome, per se, but it does have a through line to his work: It’s a sequel to Lucky McKee’s 2011 “The Woman,” which followed Andrew van den Houten’s 2009 “Offspring,” whose print source was a sequel to Ketcham’s 1980 debut novel “Off Season.” Ketchum earned writing credits on both films, and “Off Season” was the start of a series about a cannibalistic clan in the woods of rural Maine. At the end of “The Woman,” the titular feral captive of a “civilized” family kills her keepers and returns to the wilderness, the family’s children in tow.

With SXSW now in full swing, it's about time that some of the hotly anticipated features start to share teases to whet the appetites of filmgoers. One of my must-see films this year is Pollyanna McIntosh's directorial debut, Darlin'. A sequel to Lucky McKee's The Woman and the third part of a series based on a Jack Ketchum novel that began with The Offspring, Darlin' partially follows the further adventures of McIntosh's title character from the former and picks up a new character in Darlin'. The PR describes the film thusly: Found at a Catholic hospital filthy and ferocious, feral teenager Darlin' (Lauryn Canny) is whisked off to a care home run by The Bishop (Brian Batt of Mad Men) and his obedient nuns where...

Before she was Jadis (aka Anne) on AMC's The Walking Dead, Pollyanna McIntosh was The Woman in Lucky McKee's 2011 movie of the same name, and for her feature-length directorial debut, McIntosh will continue the story of The Woman with Darlin', which is teased in its first trailer ahead of its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival.
Written and directed by Pollyanna McIntosh, Darlin' stars Lauryn Canny, Bryan Batt, Nora-Jane Noone, Cooper Andrews, and McIntosh, who will reprise her role as The Woman from the 2011 movie of the same name. Darlin' is produced by Andrew van den Houten and executive produced by Jack Ketchum, Lucky McKee, Malik B. Ali, Badie Ali, Hamza Ali, Greg Newman, and Travis Stevens.

Jack Ketchum was a well-known writer of horror fiction. Examples of his works range from Off Season and The Girl Next Door to Red and The Woman, both of which have been turned into movies. Unfortunately, Ketchum passed away on January 24 of 2018, having succumbed to cancer at the age of 71. When it came to writing about the horrors of real life and the human monsters that walk among us, there was perhaps no one better than author Jack Ketchum, aka Dallas Mayr, and we're sad to share the news that Dallas has passed away at the age of 71.
Jack Ketchum's official website confirmed the news of Dallas' passing, and fellow author and close friend Christopher Golden also shared the news on Twitter, mentioning that Dallas had been fighting cancer for a long time.
When it came to writing visceral prose that pulled no punches, Dallas was a master. Whether writing about cannibals in Off Season, an old man seeking revenge for his dog in Red, or a pregnant woman trying to survive demented kidnappers in Right to Life, Dallas dug deep into tormented psyches and harrowing situations, shining an unforgiving light on both the humanity and depravity of all-too-real horrors...

MaryAnn’s quick take… My anger that women filmmakers doing a horror anthology is seen as a novelty almost overshadows my disappointment that these short films aren’t very scary. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies by and about women
I’m “biast” (con): I’m not much of a horror fan
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I’m looking forward to the time when the work of four women filmmakers coming together in a horror anthology is not considered a novelty, but we do not live in that world yet. So that is the motif that connects the segments of Xx: they were written and directed by women. (Imagine how ridiculous it would be to try to sell an anthology on the fact that all the segments were made by men!) I’m always glad to see women filmmakers working,...

If the saying "no guts, no glory" holds true, then there's a serious discrepancy happening in the world of horror. Though women -- your scream queens, your final girls -- have so often offered up their guts to genre films, men are still predominately pulling the strings behind the scenes. That's not the case with Xx, a horror anthology featuring four killer tales by four female directors: Annie Clark (aka rocker St. Vincent, making her directorial debut), Jovanka Vuckovic, Karyn Kusama and Roxanne Benjamin. The story of how Xx came to be -- and how it hopes to upend the horror industry -- is best told by the women behind it.
Magnet Releasing
A director and student of horror maestro Guillermo del Toro, Vuckovic conceived Xx after noticing that despite the horror anthology's extensive history, female creatives have been virtually absent. She partnered with producer Todd Brown of Xyz Films to change that.

Xx – an all-female directed horror anthology – couldn’t push against genre representation at a better time. You’d think those involved would come out fiery, focused and full of appropriate rage given current gender voicelessness. This was a chance for horror to champion female filmmakers, yet assertions are tepid at best. Even past the failed settling of gender scores, Xx lacks horror establishment of the basest engagement. Only one chapter stands out (victorious because of competition), while three more efforts drag their feet without enthusiasm. No statement is made, no mic is dropped and no lasting message lingers past the credits. Enjoy another mixed bag of spooky stories that do no bumping in any night.
Please note, such disinterest isn’t because my feeble male brain can’t comprehend a different perspective. Three of the four main characters are mothers, all caught in family dilemmas. That’s not where my disconnection stems.

Horror anthologies can be a tough feat to pull off, especially when you’re trying to pull together different filmmakers’ visions into one cohesive experience. That being said, Xx, which recently celebrated its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, succeeds in delivering four wildly distinct stories from several female directors, featuring the talents of Jovanka Vuckovic, Karyn Kusama, Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent), and Roxanne Benjamin. Beyond just its historical significance, Xx stands out as one of the more successful anthologies we’ve seen as of late, regardless of the gender of its directors.
Xx starts off with Vuckovic’s contribution, The Box, which is based on a story of the same name by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum. In the segment, we follow Susan (Natalie Brown), a mother who watches helplessly as an unknown force literally consumes her family after her son, Danny (Peter DaCunha), takes a peek inside...

It’s unfortunate that when many fans hear the names “Lucky McKee” and “Sundance” mentioned in the same sentence, the first thing that comes to mind is an incident in which an audience member had a total public meltdown after the festival screened McKee’s fourth feature (fifth if you count Red, which he co-directed), The Woman, in 2011. After the movie—an adaptation of a novel of the same name he co-wrote with Jack Ketchum—premiere as part of Sundance’s Midnights program, an irate man stood up and began shouting that the movie was “disgusting” and that it degraded both men and women. The freak-out was caught on video and went viral within the film community, garnering The Woman a reputation as a piece of art so potentially transgressive and shocking that it would warrant such a response even before most people saw the movie.
