A warm reminder that there were fanboys before the generation made famous by Kevin Smith and The Simpsons' comic-book guy, Frank Dietz & Trish Geiger's Long Live the King interviews a slew of older King Kong fans about the character and his many, many incarnations. Most of the interviewees went into the movie-magic biz themselves — notably Joe Dante, who made a little creature feature of his own called Gremlins. But interviewees both famous and obscure are united by their monkey-love in this humble but enjoyable production, which may do well in one-off bookings but would make the most sense...

Ever wanted to see a John Waters movie scored by Gene Belcher? That’s The Greasy Strangler. Chaos and perversion reign in premium fashion, almost challenging audiences to walk out on Jim Hosking’s “daring” feature debut. Non-continuity purists should throw their hands in the air and praise their new god. Life as you know it, does not relate to The Greasy Strangler, yet somehow all the dick-waving and throat-collapsing works (against all odds). Each line of ludicrous lingo and disgusting act of deprivation. All the vulgar descriptions of cum-drenched partners and atrocities against morality. No single scene is suitable for general audiences, so strap in for the weirdest cinematic watch of 2016 – or ever.
Sky Elobar plays Big Brayden, a walking disco tour guide who lives and works with his father, Big Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels). There’s a murderer on the loose dubbed The Greasy Strangler (because he covers...

Beyond Fest must have their check in the mail, because ol' Jack Burton himself is coming to the festival for a 30th anniversary screening of Big Trouble in Little China. Filmmaker James Gunn will be on hand to discuss the cult John Carpenter movie with the beloved actor, and that's only one of many events fans will want to mark on their fall calendars.
Taking place September 30th–October 11th at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles, Beyond Fest 2016 will also feature screenings of Phantasm: Ravager, Phantasm: Remastered, George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in 3-D, Martin, In a Valley of Violence, The Wolf Man (1941), The Bad Batch, Raw, and City of the Living Dead.
A 4K restoration screening of Romero's The Crazies will also take place, as well as a live performance by composer Fabio Frizzi and his orchestra during a showing of The Beyond: Composer's Cut.

The Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival heads into its 14th edition this July, and unlike any of us, it is gliding into adolescence with remarkable style. We've already reported that festival Guest of Honor will be former Beauty and the Beast writer George R. R. Martin (what has he done since then?), but today we have the pleasure to announce the full festival lineup, and boy is it a doozy. Joining Martin at the lakeside festival is indie staple and newfound horrormeister Kevin Smith, who will be feted with a special tribute, and will be screening his own work and some of his favorite films. The International Competition reunites two of our very favorite films out of Cannes, David Robert Mitchell's spookily inventive It...

Alright, hold on, let me put down my copy of Cryptozoic Man and pull up a Wikipedia page. You guys are here for some Dynamite history, right? Ok. Here we go.
Dynamite was founded in 2005 by Nick Barucci. The company is run out of Mt. Laurel, New Jersey, a town that (as far as I can tell) is known only for being the home of Dynamite, and for being sort of near Philadelphia. They published a few Army of Darkness limited series through Devil’s Due before starting their own publishing operation. Dynamite dedicated itself, for some time, to publishing only Army of Darkness. Eventually they began to branch out, releasing a Red Sonja series that was so well received that it immediately positioned Dynamite to be a force in the industry.

If the first three days of Comic-Con look to be a whirlwind of previews and panels, the last two days don’t slow down at all. There’s more exclusive sneak peeks, blood-sucking star-crossed lovers, the new show from Jj Abrams and Jon Favreau, Showtime’s family of drunks, a double shot of Seth MacFarlane, a high school singing club, outlaw bikers, Bart Simpson, a Time Lord and Kevin Smith. Like the first few days, some stuff will likely change and unexpected stuff will emerge, but Deadline has the breaking small-screen news covered. Here’s what to look out for at the convention on Saturday and Sunday. Hulu has a YouTube channel. The internet’s premiere online video streaming service “that offers a selection of hit shows, clips, movies and more at Hulu.com, numerous destination sites online, and through [an] ad-supported subscription service, Hulu Plus” launched that channel on March 3, 2008 and has since populated it with no less than 175 videos. Those videos include Hulu commercials and Super Bowl spots, teasers for Hulu original series (like that Kevin Smith show and the one from Morgan Spurlock), and clips from The Simpsons and Family Guy (which are meant to tease the full episodes, which you can watch in their entireties on Hulu). And people watch those no less than 175 videos. In fact, people watch them A lot. Hulu’s YouTube channel recently received its 1 billionth (with a “b”) view, making it one of the latest inductees into the video sharing site’s Billion Views Club. It crossed the threshold sometime in early April,...

On March 24, 2002, not only were the 74th annual Academy Awards ceremony held at its brand new venue, the Kodak Theatre, in Los Angeles, but the Oscars made history when Halle Berry won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Monster’s Ball. Berry was the first African-American performer to win in the Best Actress category and only the second African-American actress ever to be honoured by the Academy. The first was Hattie McDaniel, who won for her supporting role in Gone With the Wind (1939).
Following Berry’s win, Denzel Washington became only the second African-American man to win in the Best Actor category. It was the first time that African-American performers had taken home both of the year’s coveted top acting awards. Sidney Poitier, the first African-American Best Actor winner Lilies of the Field (1964) received an honorary Oscar that night.

I think the teaser below the headline is more than enough to get across my opinion of the prequel films in general. If there has ever been a film I made excuses for when I first saw it, it was Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. I don't remember what my first impression was of Attack of the Clones and then I gave Revenge of the Sith a B- when I reviewed it, a grade that still seems about right considering it is the only one I have rewatched since seeing any of them in theaters... At least, it's the only one I have been able to entirely rewatch as I have tried to watch the others but become too frustrated to watch them in their entirety. Yet, I am somehow interested in seeing The Phantom Menace in 3D. Not interested enough to pay for it myself, but...

What's old was new again as Disney's iconic "The Lion King" became the #1 movie at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $29.3 million with a souped-up 3-D redo of the 1994 original.
"Drive," one of the year's best-reviewed films, was #3 in its weekend debut, while the poorly reviewed remake of "Straw Dogs" and Sarah Jessica Parker's even-worse-reviewed "I Don't Know How She Does It" both flopped in their debuts. Last week's #1 movie, "Contagion," dropped to #2 this week.
"The Lion King" 3-D re-release earned more than the other three new releases combined. The film's original-run, IMAX re-release (back in 2002) and the past weekend's numbers pushed "The Lion King" from #25 to #17 on the all-time domestic box-office chart, according to Box Office Mojo. The animated tale,...

They were once cutting-edge comics with talent to burn; now they're sharing screen time with CGI co-stars and corny critters. Ellen E Jones reports on the family comedy club
For musicians, it's 27; the mystical age at which the unlucky succumb to the consequences of their career-dictated lifestyle. For movie stars, it's more like 49. And for them, it's not heroin, or booze, or depression; it's family comedies. You want proof? This weekend you can witness Jim Carrey, esteemed star of The Truman Show and Dumb & Dumber, and six CGI penguins breakdancing all over the grave of his serious acting ambitions in Mr Popper's Penguins. Carrey turned 49 in January, and the film marks his ascension into a not-so-exclusive fellowship of once-intriguing actors who now make family comedies.
Remember the 33-year-old Steve Martin who made The Jerk in 1979? At 49, he made the dismal Sgt Bilko and now mostly diverts his genius into Cheaper by the Dozen sequels.

Most people know film know the name Wes Anderson. He's a brilliant director who has influenced scores of films since he Bottle Rocket. And yet, the average box-office take of his six films is $21 million. Kevin Smith is an even more popular director. The average box-office of his nine films is $20 million. Martin Scorsese's average is $39 million. Woody Allen's average is $13 million. Danny Boyle's is $30 million. The Coen Brothers average around $45 million. David Lynch: $12.3 million. David Mamet: $6 million.
And yet, if you are a film fan, those are all names that you know. You probably know them well. You've probably seen some or most of their films. And yet, you probably have no idea who Steve Carr is. In the last decade, Carr has made 6 films. The box-office average of those six films is $80 million, better than the average of either Tony or Ridley Scott.

This is the one day where the comics and films align properly at Comic-Con, mainly because you get the Marvel and DC presentations of their upcoming features. That's right, this is the awesome Saturday schedule for Comic-Con, and it's about time.Need your fix of the "Green Lantern"? Well it depends on what kind of medium you want the DC creation in. Of course you can attend the massive Warner Bros Pictures panel that not only shows off "Green Lantern" but Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". If you want it more along the comic sector, then you can go to panels like Green Lantern: Emerald Empire. That's not the only thing that DC is dishing out. Other “festival favorites” include Waking Sleeping Beauty, a behind-the-scenes documentary about Disney animation from 1984 to 1994 directed by Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn, and Tony, a Slamdance selection and psychological thriller about a serial killer.
Skateland, starring Ashley Green, is also getting another look from festival goers, as well as the raved-about short film from Spike Jonze titled I’m Here. Plus a Doors documentary narrated by Johnny Depp. I’ll be reviewing and covering as many of these films as I can.
Below is a full list of the additional titles screening at the film festival, which runs from March 12th through the 20th in Austin, Texas.

Now that Comic-Con is over and done with, it's time to look back and determine what lessons we can take from the experience. One of the many benefits of being present in their biggest, most movie-centric room, the notorious Hall H, is that you get to witness all sorts of craziness. Sometimes it's from the shellshocked celebs, taking in their first glimpse of what they're about to get into by being in a Comic-Con friendly movie. Sometimes it's from the fans, who never disappoint in providing amusement during the Q&A portions.
Here are 10 things I've learned at this year's Con.

1. Don't spoil your movie during your own panel
Comic-Con is a great place for surprises, but generally one wouldn't expect a panel to spoil the major plot point of a movie it's promoting. Even after Richard Kelly showed an extended scene and trailer from the film, even after talking a lot about it,...

Photo: Warner Bros. Yesterday Matt Selman, a writer and exec producer on "The Simpsons", wrote up a review of Watchmen on Time.com's Nerdworld blog. I haven't read the review but based on descriptions from others I understand it to be Highly positive. Jeff Wells at Hollywood-Elsewhere refers to Sellman saying he is "a completely prejudiced and unreliable shill. He's an invested pre-believer, a suck-up, an emotional pushover -- his word means absolutely nothing." Mmmmmkay... Devin Faraci at Chud gets upset for a different reason. Devin's upset because Sellman is breaking review embargoes under the guise that he is not a journalist. "Make no mistake, this is a review," says Devin. "And make no mistake, despite what [this] reviewer and Simpsons executive producer says, he's a journalist in this case. He's blogging on the Time magazine website in a Time magazine-sanctioned blog, for the love of God! [And] I'm going to guess...
