For a writer whose specialty was his mad rush of words — careening, excessive, gloriously offensive and thoroughly “gonzo,” to use a word he may well have coined — Hunter S. Thompson has long been an irresistible image to put on screen. He was played by Johnny Depp in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” Bill Murray in “Where the Buffalo Roam” and a few others, and now it’s Willem Dafoe’s turn in Patricia Arquette’s directorial debut, “Gonzo Girl.”
Rather, it’s Dafoe’s turn to play somebody like Hunter S. Thompson. In the movie, which had its world premiere on Thursday night as one of the opening-night attractions of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, Dafoe is “Walker Reade,” a wild-eyed journalist and author who lives in Woody Creek, Colorado and loves guns, drugs, alcohol and messing with people — not necessarily in that order. The actor makes an underwhelming first feature as film-maker, a thinly etched adaptation of Cheryl Della Pietra’s semi-autobiographical book
There’s a certain image associated with gonzo journalism – daring, confessional, subversive, male. For all its successes and groundbreaking candor, it’s a style conflated with male ego and excess, the extremes of drugs, adventure and eccentricity that men could afford to pursue.
Gonzo Girl, the directorial debut of the actor Patricia Arquette, seems, at least on the surface, to be interested in complicating that image, or at least adding some footnotes. The 107-minute film, written by Rebecca Thomas and Jessica Caldwell and based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Cheryl Della Pietra, focuses on a young female assistant to a stand-in for Hunter S Thompson in the summer of 1992. Like her real-life counterpart, Alley Russo (Camila Morrone) is a bookish recent grad with literary aspirations who takes a gig assisting...

The Toronto Film Festival pulled the curtain off its lineup for this year’s Discovery and Midnight Madness sections with notable titles respectively teeing off both programs’ opening nights: Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl and Borat director Larry Charles’ Dicks: The Musical from A24.
The Midnight Madness section counts 10 features, seven of which are world premieres. The Discovery lineup, which primarily boasts world and international premieres, includes 26 titles. Notably, 13 female filmmakers representing 50% of the total program are featured in this year’s Discovery; that lineup is known for being a window to contemporary world cinema with first and second movies from frosh filmmakers. With Midnight Madness films, it’s anything goes.
“We’re excited to be showcasing new voices, audacious vision, and genre-bending cinema,” said Anita Lee, TIFF Chief Programming Officer. “TIFF’s Discovery and Midnight Madness programs for 2023 will once again prove to be the ultimate destination for tastemakers and experience seekers.

Despite the unpredictability of the last few years, both in Hollywood and beyond, recent years have proven fruitful for female filmmakers. From winning the top awards at the starriest festivals to notching back to back Best Director Oscar winners (for the first time ever for Zhao and Jane Campion) and churning out big-time box office hits, women have been unquestionably on the rise.
Until, perhaps, now. As we do every year, IndieWire is looking ahead at the next two years of studio features directed by women to get a sense of who Hollywood is elevating in still-rarefied spaces. Getting the chance to helm a studio feature is, of course, not the golden ticket for any director.
But it’s hard to deny the power and prestige of directing a big-time movie released by a major studio, even in a world where streaming platforms are making significant inroads into the “blockbuster” space.

Cate Blanchett’s admiration for filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is truly unmatched.
The already heavily accoladed Australian actor made her first appearance in a Del Toro movie in his 2021 thrilling drama Nightmare Alley, alongside her former Carol co-star Rooney Mara and Bradley Cooper.
But, it seems this leading role didn’t satiate Blanchett’s cravings for Del Toro’s creative genius. Instead, her appetite grew larger.
Blanchett now stars in his newest critically acclaimed stop-motion fantasy/musical, Pinocchio.
However, rather than giving her deep-sultry voice to, let’s say, Gepetto, she’s given it up altogether, lending it to Spazzatura, the squawking monkey, which, it must be noted, is the Italian translation of the word “garbage”.
In a behind-the-scenes video, the award-winning director explained how the “surprise” casting came about, recalling: “We were shooting Nightmare Alley. Cate Blanchett and I were having such a good time that she said, ‘You...

Bob Dylan has revealed that he enjoys listening to Eminem and the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan.
In a new interview, the singer opened up about his favourite artists and explained that he usually discovers new music “mostly by accident”.
Dylan, 81, told The Wall Street Journal that he “is a fan of” Eminem and Wu-Tang Clan and praised them both for their “feeling for words and language”.
He also said that he likes listening to “anybody whose vision parallels mine”.
This is not the first time Dylan has discussed Eminem. In 2001, he admitted to Time that he didn’t know that much about the rapper, but said: “I almost feel like if anything is controversial, the guy’s gotta be doing something right.”
In the same interview, 21 years ago, Dylan claimed that he hated most modern music and said that the radio makes “hideous sounds”.

Bob Dylan released his latest book The Philosophy of Modern Song in November.
The book contains Dylan’s commentary on 66 songs by other artists. It is the first book Dylan has published since he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
In a new interview, Dylan explained the unusual dedication in the new book, to coffee and bakery company Dunkin’ Donuts.
“In the book, I thank: the ‘crew from Dunkin’ Donuts’,” he said.
“Because they were compassionate, supportive and they went the extra mile.”
Elsewhere in the interview, he revealed that he was a fan of the TV shows Coronation Street, Father Brown and some early Twilight Zones.
“I know they’re old-fashioned, but they make me feel at home,” he told The Wall Street Journal.
“I’m no fan of packaged programs or news shows. I never watch anything foul-smelling or evil. Nothing disgusting, nothing dog ass.”

Lewis Capaldi is worried German people don’t enjoy his music after he claims that his shows aren’t selling well in the country.
The Scottish singer recently announced his biggest dates yet, visiting venues UK and Ireland, Europe, America, Australia, and New Zealand. UK dates begin in January 2023.

According to the singer, the German dates are the only ones that aren’t “selling well”.
“People in Germany are really not vibing with my music, I have to say at the minute. Ticket sales are abysmal. That’s a word that I don’t get to use often,” he said while being interviewed by Ken Bruce on BBC Radio 2.

Prue Leith has confessed that she’d never heard of her The Great British Bake Off co-star Noel Fielding until he appeared on the show.
The popular judge on the Channel 4 baking series appeared on Lorraine today (Tuesday 20 December), where she shared some anecdotes about her early days as a cook, as well as her thoughts on Matt Lucas’ recent exit from Bake Off.
The comedian shocked fans earlier this month by announcing he was quitting the show after three series. He explained that it had become too much of a struggle juggling his various TV commitments.
“Farewell Bake Off!” he wrote in a statement. “It’s been a delicious experience and I can’t imagine a more fun way of spending my summers. But it’s become clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.

James Gunn has issued a clarification to Ray Fisher after the actor accused him of “using fake grace” on Twitter.
In 2020, Fisher, who appeared in Whedon’s Justice League, alleged that the director had engaged in “gross, abusive, unprofessional and completely unacceptable” behaviour on the set of the 2017 film.
Two years later, Whedon described the claims as “false and unjust” and said that he made Cyborg’s role in the film smaller as his storyline “made no sense”. He claims that test screening audiences found Cyborg’s character to be “the worst” in the film.
Many jumped to Fisher’s defence, including Gal Gadot and Charisma Carpenter, but the actor has pointed out that Gunn, who was recently appointed as the CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, “supported” Whedon.
Fisher, who played Cyborg, accompanied the tweet with a screenshot showing that Gunn had once apologised for liking the tweet that defended Whedon,...

Lily Allen has been posting on social media about “nepo babies”.
In recent weeks, TikTok users have shared their fascination with famous figures from the entertainment industry who they didn’t realise had famous or successful parents, christening them “nepo babies” (short for nepotism).
Actor Zoë Kravitz (daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet) and model and musician Lourdes Leon (Madonna’s eldest daughter) are among those who, in response, have defended themselves over the debate.
Now, singer and actor Allen – daughter of the actor Keith Allen – has weighed in.
“The nepo babies y’all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics,” she tweeted on Monday (19 December).
“If we’re talking about real world consequences and robbing people of opportunity. But that’s none of my business.”

Jessica Chastain has spoken about changing a “deeply disturbing” scene in George & Tammy.
Chastain and Michael Shannon star as country music power couple Tammy Wynette and George Jones in the recently released series.
In the first episode of the series, Wynette is still married to her soon-to-be ex-husband Don Chapel.
Chastain – who also serves as a producer on the show – told Marie Claire that the script initially saw Jones attempt to get Wynette alone by distracting Chapel with an escort.
The scene, however, “disturbed” Chastain to the point that she wanted it to be altered.
“I read it, and I was deeply disturbed,” Chastain said. “[Tammy] was just kind of sitting there. People were creating stuff so she could be caught rather than her making decisions.”
The actor went on to explain how it was important to her that her character be given more agency.
“The song isn’t about being a doorman.

Robert De Niro has reportedly been the victim of a home burglary.
At around 2:30 am Monday (19 December) morning, a woman was reportedly caught in the 79-year-old Goodfellas star’s New York City townhouse, taking presents from underneath the Christmas tree and fiddling with his iPad.
Law enforcement sources told The New York Post that the woman, identified as Shanice Aviles, 30, was a “known burglar”, with more than 25 arrests on her record.
Sources said New York Police Department’s 19th Precinct Public Safety officers had spotted Aviles attempting to gain entry into commercial buildings before successfully making her way down a stairwell leading her to De Niro’s Upper East Side home.
Aviles was apprehended inside the home, where she was found on the second floor.
“She was stealing Christmas presents,” a police official told the publication.
At the time, De Niro was upstairs while his daughter was in a separate bedroom.

“Fairytale of New York” is a drunken hymn for people with broken dreams and abandoned hopes. It is, therefore, a perfect contrast to some of the perkier perennial favourites we wheel out each Christmas.
The song begins with its narrator, an Irish immigrant, being thrown into a drunk tank to sleep off his Christmas Eve binge.
Hearing an old man sing the Irish ballad “The Rare Old Mountain Dew”, he begins to dream about his memories of the female character in the song, and so begins the story of two people who fell in love in America, only to see their plans of a bright future dashed.
Some of the best songs combine uplifting instrumentation with lyrics that are downright miserable, and such is the case for “Fairytale of New York”. It has none of the gooeyness of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” or Wham!

Sam Smith has changed the lyrics to their hit song “Stay With Me” in honour of a federal law signing, which recognises same sex and interracial marriages in the US.
The 30-year-old singer was performing at the White House on Tuesday (13 December), after being invited by Biden to celebrate the progressive change to laws.
The Respect for Marriage Act applies to same sex and interracial couples in the US, and protects their rights as couples by officially recognising their marriage.

“My deepest thanks to President Biden and First Lady Dr Jill Biden for inviting me to perform at the White House, it was a true honour,” wrote the singer in an Instagram post following the event.

A new scheme will launch in London next year to offer free cultural activities for those struggling with the cost of living.
The Ticket Bank will act as the cultural equivalent of food banks, aimed at helping those with low incomes to access music, theatre, comedy and dance.
The scheme will work by offering around 1000 unsold tickets per week for events across London to those who can’t afford to purchase them.
To find those who need access to low-cost tickets, the scheme will partner with organisations such as Centrepoint and the Trussell Trust which runs UK food banks.
Launching in January, tickets will be available for free or as a “pay what you can” type variation.
“Art is a human right. And the tighter things get with people’s finances, the more they will be squeezed out of art,” said Chris Sonnex, the man behind the new scheme, in an interview with The Guardian.

The music executive created the long-running talent competition in 2004 and sat as a judge and mentor for 12 of its 15 seasons.

Despite this, fans of The X Factor have been holding out hope for its eventual return.

“People keep asking me about the show – ‘are you going to bring it back?’” he began, before pointing out the prevalence of new music in the age of social media and streaming. “100,000 new songs are uploaded every day at the moment.
“It’s good but it’s also difficult. I believe you’ve got to get to know somebody.”

Richard Curtis has finally revealed the profession of Juliette, played by Keira Knightley, in the 2003 Christmas classic Love Actually.
Curtis’s daughter, Scarlett Curtis, posted a poll on social media, asking her followers whether they knew about Juliette’s occupation. 96 per cent of her followers said they didn’t, while only four per cent said they did.
In a later video posted on Instagram, Curtis is asked by his daughter what Juliette’s job was intended to be.
Curtis explained that he thought it was obvious, considering the set design of Juliette’s apartment.
"I’m hurt that you don’t know,” Curtis told his daughter.
“I think it’s very clear from the set design, while he’s [Peter, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor] making the phone call to Andrew Lincoln [Mark], that she has worked for quite a long time as an interior decorator.”

Gavin and Stacey star Joanna Page has said that she hopes the show will return for a future Christmas special.
The Welsh actor starred opposite Mathew Horne in Ruth Jones and James Corden’s BBC sitcom, which originally aired from 2007 to 2010 and returned in 2019 for a one-off festive episode.
Appearing on Loose Women on Tuesday (13 December), Page said that, while she’d “love to do another one”, she was unsure of the show’s future.
“I’ve honestly no idea,” Page said. “I’m just the same as everybody else because they don’t tell us. They don’t tell us anything and I’ve never ever asked.
“I’ve never said, ‘Oh Ruth, do you think you’ll do another one or is there going to be more?’ I’m just not that sort of person. I’ve always just thought, we’ll wait and see and if there is,...

Patty Jenkins shared a lengthy statement commenting on reports that her third Wonder Woman film had been iced by new DC bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn.
The news came last week that a proposal for Wonder Woman 3 had been turned down by DC just a day after Gal Gadot told fans she was excited for the heroine’s “next chapter”.
Writer/director Jenkins wrote that she had decided to comment on the reports as she would not allow “inaccuracies” to continue.
“I never walked away,” Jenkins posted on Twitter. “I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”
Continuing, Jenkins appeared to confirm that plans for more Wonder Woman movies were not moving forward.

According to Aubrey Plaza, her White Lotus co-star Meghann Fahy left out the “most important part” of their “Daphne and Harper” moment.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Fahy shared a story about the time she and Plaza got lost on a hike while they were in Italy filming season two of Mike White’s comedy-drama.
In Fahy’s recollection of events, she and Plaza “got so lost” that they ended up “walking down the side of the highway”.
And after running into a “biker gang” who heckled them, Fahy remembered Plaza yelling, “Don’t look at me!” while Fahy flirtatiously said, “Hi!”
“It was a very Daphne/Harper moment,” Fahy explained, referring to their White Lotus characters (Fahy’s ditsy Daphne and Plaza’s stoney Harper).
However, on a later appearance on Meyer’s show, Plaza set the record straight, saying Fahy “left out the most important part,...
