“This is the only person to run a studio who knows how to make a movie,” director Allan Arkush exclaimed, hailing his former boss Roger Corman in front of a sold-out crowd at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica Saturday evening.
Now 97 years old, the unbelievably prolific Pope of Pop Cinema was the guest of honor at the genre-focused Beyond Fest, in partnership with American Cinematheque. Corman joined for a panel with Arkush, fellow directors Ron Howard, Joe Dante and Amy Holden Jones and producer Jon Davison — all of whom Corman helped launch into Hollywood under his independent production and distribution company New World Pictures, founded in 1970. After directing more than 45 features, Corman decided to create his own banner, which would go on to help jumpstart the careers of Jonathan Demme, Curtis Hanson and countless other talents.
“I made a picture for American International that made too much money, ‘The Wild Angels.

The Beach Boys will kick off a year-long celebration of their 60th anniversary in June with a vastly expanded edition of their greatest hits comp Sounds of Summer.
When it was initially released in 2003, Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of The Beach Boys contained 30 of the group’s biggest hits; the box set for the new reissue — out June 17 — bumps the tracklist up to 80 songs and three discs (or six LPs), pairing Brian Wilson and company’s best-known singles alongside dozens of fan favorites like “Til I Die,” “Sail on Sailor,...

Don’t be fooled: the Foo Fighters’ “Studio 666” is not some extended music video gimmick put out by Dave Grohl and company. It’s a real horror movie with a legit runtime, a plot and a script. And though they’re amazed the movie actually got finished and exists, Grohl isn’t fooling himself that they’re suddenly real actors either.
“First of all, it wasn’t that much of a stretch to be the Foo Fighters. You throw us backstage in a room, and we are a comedy troupe everywhere we go, that’s just what happens, for the last quarter of a century,” Grohl told TheWrap in an interview, the second part of which will be published Thursday. “And nobody is going for an Oscar here, by the way. It’s very much like, ‘Hey let’s get f—ed up.’ It was nice to be relieved...

Dave Grohl got in touch with his demonic side for “March of the Insane,” a thrashy new death-metal song attributed to the fictional band Dream Widow. The track, which surfaced on Foo Fighters’ YouTube page, claims to come “from their never released self-titled album.” Although the exact musicians who play in “Dream Widow” are unknown, it’s safe to assume Grohl had a hand in the track given his collaborations with members of Celtic Frost, Mercyful Fate, Motörhead, and Venom years ago on his Probot project.

“He’s a talker” is a phrase that has never been used to describe Brian Wilson, then — in the Beach Boys’ original 1960s heyday — or especially now. So director Brent Wilson might have been taking on one of the more quixotic filmmaking quests of all time when he set out to make a documentary that would consist primarily of pulling thoughts and memories out of one of the great musical geniuses of the past century, whose shyness with interviews and mental health struggles are well known. That such a movie — “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road” — not only exists but provides real windows into its subject’s inner world seems almost incalculable.
Today, Brent Wilson (no relation) is in Brian Wilson’s upstairs music room in a house overlooking the San Fernando Valley, holding court to talk about the doc and some new music therein. The singer, who has had multiple...

I love Joe Dante. He has directed some hugely entertaining films and is an aficionado of the same genres I adore. Additionally, like most film directors, he is highly versed in cinemaspeak. My introduction to his work came in 1983 when I bought his werewolf classic The Howling (1981) sight-unseen on RCA’s now extinct Ced system and immediately took to it. That failed stylus-based videodisc format was severely limited to only several thousand titles, so I had to rely on VHS to catch up with his Hollywood Boulevard (1976), Piranha (1978), and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School (1979) in the mid-80’s following theatrical viewings of Twilight Zone: The Movie in 1983 and Gremlins in 1984. For some reason, his July 12, 1985-released outing Explorers, which concerns the escapades of three young boys making their way through the battlefield of junior high school, escaped my list of...

Without Brian Wilson, the world would be devoid of West Coast anthems like “California Girls,” “Good Vibrations” and “Surfin’ U.S.A.”
The musician and record producer, who founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl, as well as their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, is the subject of a new documentary, “Brian Wilson: Long Promised Road.”
Directed by Brent Wilson, who has no relation to the singer, the film is premiering at this year’s Tribeca Festival on June 15. “Long Promised Road” features guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Elton John and Nick Jonas and gives the Beach Boys icon an opportunity to reflect on his life and music.
In an exclusive clip of “Long Promised Road,” Wilson discusses his songwriting process with Rolling Stone’s editor Jason Fine, his longtime friend, on their way into the recording studio.

Hail! Hail! Rock 'n roll! In celebration of director Allan Arkush's seminal rock 'n roll opus, Rock 'n' Roll High School, starring the greatest band there ever was - Ramones - home entertainment heroes Shout! Factory will be releasing a brand new 40th anniversary Blu-ray steelbook edition of the film this November 19th. Initially released on Blu-ray back in in 2010, RnRHS's previous HD incarnation left quite a bit to be desired. However, this new release will be struck from Shout!'s recent 4K restoration from the original camera negatives and keep all of the original disc's bonus material while adding a brand new retrospective with much of the surviving cast and crew. But that's not all! Perhaps the original release's most crucial flaw was the...

Happy 2018, dear readers! With a new year comes a new batch of home entertainment releases, even if we only have a relatively quiet week of titles to look forward to. Scream Factory is kicking off 2018 right with their Collector’s Edition of Hell Night, and Umberto Lenzi’s Seven Blood Stained Orchids is getting a brand new Blu as well. If you missed it last fall, The Houses October Built 2 comes home this week, and cult film fans should keep an eye out for Miss Zombie from Redemption Films, too.
Other January 2nd releases include Bigfoot Country, Dystopia, Anna, Death Island Paranormal Retribution, No Solicitors, and The Body Tree.

Before he came face to face with Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Peter Barton faced a different kind of cinematic killer alongside Linda Blair in Hell Night. With the 1981 horror film coming out soon on a Collector's Edition Blu-ray / DVD with a new 4K scan from Scream Factory, we've been provided with an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip to share as a special treat for Daily Dead readers.
In the behind-the-scenes clip below, Barton reflects on a humorous time when it was difficult for him to maintain a straight face during filming, and he also talks about the high level of energy that goes into a performance when actors are playing characters who are fighting for (or fear for) their lives.

We have a high-def clip from Fred Olen Ray's Alienator to share with Daily Dead readers ahead of the film's Blu-ray release on June 13th from Scream Factory!
Alienator Blu-ray: "In deep space, the deadliest animal is still woman!
It's a futuristic fight to the finish when the Commander of a space station prison (Jan Michael-Vincent, The Mechanic, White Line Fever) takes on galactic archvillain Kol (Ross Hagen, Avenging Angel). When Kol escapes, on the verge of his execution, the Commander has no choice but to unleash the Alienator – a ruthless android hunter with one unstoppable purpose: terminate Kol at any cost!
Kol's shuttle crash-lands on Earth and the Alienator is hot on his trail. She is determined to capture her prey – even if it means blowing away everything and everyone in her path.

When you think of a slasher film, images of summer camp and college campuses might dance in your head, but in her first feature film, B.C. Butcher, Kansas Bowling uniquely sets a slasher story in prehistoric times. With Troma set to release B.C. Butcher next year, we caught up with Kansas to discuss making her first movie at the age of seventeen, shooting on 16mm, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to converse with us, Kansas. Your debut feature film, B.C. Butcher, is a slasher movie set in the prehistoric era. How did you come up with this unique plot?
Kansas Bowling: Thank you so much for showing interest in my film! My friend Kenzie Givens and I came up with the idea when we were in high school. I was 15. It seemed like something easy to do on a tiny budget and it was something that had never been done before!

With nearly 3,000 fans in attendance, Dread Central hit this past Sunday’s 10th Annual Johnny Ramone Tribute at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA, and we got an eye and earful. Read on for our report, photo gallery, and a video clip from the event.
The show was hosted by musician/filmmaker Rob Zombie and his band, who played a blistering five-song set of Ramones tunes set inside the facility’s Masonic Temple, which included "Blitzkrieg Bop," "Rock 'n' Roll High School," "Beat on the Brat," "Lobotomy," and Motörhead's tribute song to the same, "R.A.M.O.N.E.S."
With the show simulcast on the cemetery’s mausoleum wall to the throng of music fans who picnicked on the grass outside, Zombie’s set was followed by a jam session made up of guitarist Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, Duff McKagan of Guns N’ Roses, singer Billy Idol,...

We have him to thank for The Little Shop of Horrors (1960), The Trip, Bloody Mama and a half-dozen Poe adaptations. His producer credits include Piranha, Boxcar Bertha, TNT Jackson, Rock 'n' Roll High School and Sharktopus. (Perhaps best to disregard that last one.) He's notorious for shooting movies on little money in less than a week using sets from other films he'd just completed. Actors/filmmakers who worked on their earliest movies with him include Jack Nicholson, Dick Miller (pictured above in A Bucket of Blood), Robert Towne, John Sayles, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante and Martin Scorsese. Roger Corman has 56 director credits and 409 producer credits on IMDb, and he's still producing.
And Austin Film Society programmer Lars Nilsen had to narrow it down to four features -- plus a bonus documentary on Dick Miller -- for the latest Afs Arthouse series: "Films of Roger Corman." The series, screening Fridays and Sundays at the Marchesa,...

Hard to believe that The Rolling Stones, half of The Beatles and The Who, and a dozen more bands that started a full decade before The Ramones (1974) have outlived them, and in many cases are still touring. They were one of my favorite punk bands ever... and with the recent death of Tommy Ramone (nee Thomas Erdelyi), all four original members of one of New York's finest bands ever, we are not "glad to see you go." The first three -- lead singer Joey (nee Jeffrey Hyman, died 2001), bass player Dee Dee (nee Douglas Colvin, died 2002), and guitarist Johnny (nee John Cummings, died 2004) -- all died only within six years after calling it quits.
They did not go gently into the night. Their off-stage dramas kept them from maintaining their once shared friendships.
Ironic isn't it? The original Ramones, the guys from "Rockaway Beach" that wanted to be sedated, are all gone.

In case you didn't know, Gremlins director Joe Dante is working on a biopic about legendary B-movie producer Roger Corman, the man responsible for films like Wasp Woman, The Raven, Pit and the Pendulum, Piranha, Rock 'N' Roll High School and Death Race 2000. At one time, Colin Firth was going to play the producer in the film called The Man with the Kaleidoscope Eyes, but now a really surprising casting change has taken place. The Telegraph (Bleeding Cool) recently spoke with Corman, who revealed that director and occasional actor Quentin Tarantino will be playing Corman in the developing biopic. Though there's not an exact quote from Corman explaining the casting, he does divulge some story details: "It’s the story of how I made The Trip in the 1960s about LSD. It starred Jack Nicholson in one of his first roles and I took LSD so I knew what it was all about.

"High School Musical" (2006): The Disney Channel movie exploded into a phenomenon. Just the "HSM" backpack invasion made its tween fans look like an army. The breakthrough roles for Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, who became an item, had them auditioning against the bizarre brother/sister act of Sharpay and Ryan (Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel). Of course the good kids win. Two of the songs, "We're All in This Together" and "Stick to the Status Quo," could have been the theme songs for the actors who then found themselves in the sequels.

Roger Corman is a Hollywood legend. The Oscar-winning producer might be the single-most prolific filmmaker ever with over 300 movies to his name. Along the way, he provided a big break to Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson and many others. His "cheap and fast" approach to sci-fi, horror and action has given us timeless cult classics like "The Little Shop of Horrors," "Death Race 2000," "Caged Heat" and "Galaxy of Terror." However, Corman is hoping to top himself yet again with his first 3D movie, "Attack of the 50 Foot Cheerleader." The film is about young cheerleading-hopeful Cassie Stratton (Jena Sims), who's so desperate to excel at the sport she subjects herself to a radical new drug that is supposed to increase her athletic abilities. Naturally, it all goes disastrously wrong and Cassie grows to gigantic proportions. If that wasn't bad enough, her mean girl rival, Brittany (Olivia Alexander), steals the formula,...

Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.
The latest film to head back to class is "21 Jump Street" (review here) the big-screen reboot of the '80s TV show, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as youthful-looking cops who are sent back to high school in order to bust a drug-running ring. While you might assume this to be another lazy remake, you'd be very wrong, as Tatum, Hill, co-writer Michael Bacall,...

It's hard to overestimate Roger Corman's significance. As the director of low-budget fare like It Conquered the World and Creature from the Haunted Sea, Corman is often regarded as a schlockmeister. And though that may be true, Corman is also a groundbreaking filmmaker without whom the landscape of contemporary cinema would look very different.
Thankfully, to remind us of Corman's immense importance to Hollywood comes Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel, an in-depth new documentary from Alex Stapleton — and I cannot think of a better Christmas gift.
Corman got his start back in the 1950s, working extensively for American International Pictures, the independent production house responsible for so many of the B-movie drive-in flicks made during the '50s, '60s and '70s.
Along the way, he shepherded the careers of budding filmmakers such as Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese.

Clint Howard is a great actor, and I don't care what anyone else says. In fact, I may go as far as to say I like him more than his more successful and famous brother, Ron. I first saw Clint in the fantastic Rock 'N' Roll High School, and felt his performance as Eaglebauer was top-notch. I saw him in a few other works since that movie, but in almost none of the movies did he have a starring role, which he so rightfully deserved. That's when I caug…...

Holy cow! Junk Food Dinner is one-year-old! To celebrate our one-year anniversary we're dropping a 2+ hour behemoth of an episode on your fragile eardrums!
Up first we take a minute to thank all the people who have contributed their time and talents to Junk Food Dinner over the past year and read some e-mails and hear some voicemails from some friends and fans of the show (if you find this boring, you know how to fast forward, pal!).
Then we recall the year that was and recount our top 5 favorite and least favorite movies we've covered over the last 365 days of the podcast.
Then we bid bon voyage to year numero uno by taking a look at three widely regarded cult classics.
Up first, we re-live our adolescence and rock out with The Ramones when we attend Rock 'n' Roll High School from 1979 with P.J. Soles, Paul Bartel, Clint Howard and Jfd favorite Mary Woronov.

This coming Sunday, the annual tribute to the late, great Johnny Ramone will feature some groovy retro cinema action that the beloved punk-rock icon would have loved himself: the all-star ceremony will conclude with a drive-in-style screening of the Roger Corman classic Rock 'N' Roll High School – the unforgettable cinematic showcase for Johnny and fellow Ramones Joey, Dee Dee and Marky – as well as the James Whale classic The Bride of Frankenstein. For the most part, this week's DVD releases consist of a handful of forgotten releases from the beginning of the year including Daybreakers, Edge of Darkness and Legion... it's open to debate whether or not they were overlooked or just plain bad. There's also a dose of late '90s nostalgia in the form of Daria: The Complete Animated Series, and some '80s memories as well with both The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II out on Blu-ray. Other Blu-ray releases include the Criterion Collection for Fritz Lang's M, and a trio of Mel Brooks flicks. Do you see anything worth buying or renting this week? Daybreakers [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Edge of Darkness [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Legion [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) North Face [7] Malice in Wonderland [8] Tidal Wave [9] (+ Blu-ray [10]) Legend of the Tsunami Warrior [11] (+ Blu-ray [12]) Art & Copy [13] P-Star Rising [14] Daria: The Complete Animated Series [15] The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: Complete Fifth...

I'm watching Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979) again this week, and I'm finding that it's such a peculiar movie. If it had been made with a slightly different tone, it would have been a total failure, a complete collection of clichés and supremely awkward moments. But it does have just the right tone, a weird combination of realism and surrealism, joy and satire, wisdom and naiveté, just like the music of the Ramones. Just when it seems like it shouldn't be working, it tips over to the other side and does work. And in my eyes, it's the second greatest rock 'n' roll movie of all time (after A Hard Day's Night).
Who's responsible for this? It could be director Allan Arkush, who had more success on television than in movies (Caddyshack II). It could be co-screenwriter Joseph McBride, who I know as a professor of film at San Francisco...

We've got a pretty bland line-up of new releases on DVD this week with such middling films as Leap Year, Tooth Fairy and Nine hitting store shelves, but there are a few other odds and ends that may be of interest to Film Junk readers including Francis Ford Coppola's Tetro, Kiyoshi Kurosawa's Tokyo Sonata and Never Sleep Again, a feature-length documentary on the A Nightmare on Elm Street series. Also out this week is a re-issue of Joe Dante's long out of print Matinee, new editions of Rock 'N' Roll High School, Doctor Zhivago and Dirty Dancing, and on Blu-ray, Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan, Kathryn Bigelow's K-19: The Widowmaker, and John Carpenter's Escape from L.A.. See anything worth picking up? At UCLA's Billy Wilder Theater this past Saturday, Boston Phoenix critic and filmmaker Gerald Peary confessed to a crowd that included David Ehrenstein and David Ansen and filmmakers Mel Stuart (the original "Willy Wonka") and Allan Arkush ("Rock 'n' Roll High School") that it's been 16 years since he's last been in Los Angeles. Here's hoping the discussion that followed, coming after a screening of his doc about film criticism "For the Love of Movies," doesn't scare him from coming back.
On a panel moderated by Anne Thompson, Peary sat idly by for most of the lively hour-long talk that involved Vogue's John Powers, former L.A. Weekly and current NPR critic Ella Taylor, former Christian Science Monitor critic David Sterritt and current Csm critic Peter Rainer. But it was now-retired Time critic Richard Schickel who took center stage, both literally and figuratively, with his admission that he never really loved movies,...

It should come as no surprise to learn that there will be a new DVD of the original Piranha to go along with this summer's 3-D remake; that sort of release is nothing new, especially if you're a horror fan. But what is particularly exciting, provided you're a fan of horror, schlock, and/or Roger Corman in general, is this: In just a few months the fine folks at Shout! Factory will be unleashing all sorts of Cormanized craziness.
In April we'll get a long-awaited re-issue of Joe Dante's Piranha, which is arguably one of Corman's finest productions -- even if it is a thinly-veiled Jaws wannabe. Your choice of standard special edition or blu-ray. Yes, that's right: Piranha on blu-ray. Pinch me. But don't pinch yet. It gets better: In the following weeks Shout! Factory will also dole out Humanoids from the Deep (yes!), the beloved Death Race 2000 and its follow-up Deathsport,...

With featured roles in Brian De Palma’s Carrie, John Carpenter’s Halloween, Allan Arkush's Rock 'n' Roll High School (featuring The Ramones), and Rob Zombie’s The Devil's Rejects, P.J. Soles has appeared in some of the most iconic cult/horror films of all time.
She's also an accomplished comedic actress, appearing in more mainstream fare such as Ivan Reitman's Stripes and Howard Zieff's Private Benjamin. (Okay, maybe Stripes and Private Benjamin aren't the genre movies Dread Central usually covers, but I think we remember them as well – especially P.J. displaying her comedy chops with Bill Murray).
Ms. Soles sat down with writer and horror fiend Heather Buckley for a lively interview about her acting career (which spans over 30 years, including television), her current musical endeavors, and one actor's insights into the differences between being directed by master of the macabre John Carpenter and suspense maestro Brian De Palma.

Howard Stern and producing partner Larry Levinson are planning a remake of the 1979 classic Rock 'n' Roll High School. The script is actually being written by Bill from Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, aka in real life as Alex Winter, who has gone on to write and direct in addition to acting. Stern and Levinson are also remaking Porky's, with both films being personal favorites of Stern's. No director has been attached yet, but Winter explains "I've now done so much stuff in music videos, and the Napster movie, that the chance to bridge music and comedy was something that intrigued me. This movie seemed so ripe for a remake." Really? Ripe for a remake? Maybe after Paramount announced School of Rock 2! The original 1979 comedy was directed by Allan Arkush and starred P.J. Soles, Vincent Van Patten, Clint Howard, and Dey Young. The film is about a group ...
