With swordfights, corsets, a sprinkle of magic and an array of truly magnificent hats (including one worn by a poodle), new Disney+ original series “Renegade Nell” has more than a touch in common with that other swashbuckling Disney staple “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Both are set at the turn of the 17th to 18th centuries and, as with “Pirates,” the period details in “Renegade Nell” abound. In Nov. 2022, just as the show moved into the final phase of production, Variety was invited to visit Ealing Studios in West London where the wood-panelled Stuart-era sets were studded with quill pens and wax seals while an imposing portrait of Joely Richardson — in costume as the extravagantly-outfitted and wigged baddie Lady Eularia Moggerhangar — hung on the wall.

Anyone who didn’t perfectly predict this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design has a uniquely valid excuse. This applies to all but a tiny fraction of Gold Derby’s nearly 11,000 prognosticators, whose solid consensus ultimately conflicted with the academy’s highly unusual decision to populate both categories with the same five films: “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Since these two craft races have only been completely congruent twice before, it’s especially understandable that very few people anticipated this outcome.
The film that mainly tripped folks up in this case was “Napoleon,” which garnered support from only 49.9% of our users in the costume design race and scraped by with a production design backing rate of just 7.5%. In the former category, many had trouble settling on two of four on-the-bubble candidates, while the latter’s pesky fifth slot...

Daisy Bevan is acting royalty with very big shoes to fill but seems to be living up to expectations. A British actress known for her appearances in Elizabeth (1998), The Affair of the Necklace (2001) and The Two Faces of January (2014), Bevan has never relied on her family name to get roles. She takes pride in doing what she loves and growing her craft based on her inherent skills. Howbeit, the influence of Daisy Bevan’s theatrically inclined lineage on her career cannot be overlooked. The British actress is the fifth generation of a richly grounded dynasty in the movie...

In the offices of Dunder Mifflin (Scranton branch), salesmen, accountants and even Hr got together to decide once and for all: Is Hilary Swank hot or not? They’re referring to her looks, but one could just as easily be talking about her career. At what point was Hilary Swank hot in her career? In 2008, when the episode aired: Yeah. In the years between her Oscars? Not exactly. Now? No. So, let’s take a look and find out…Wtf Happened to…Hilary Swank?
But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Hilary Swank, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning began when she was born on July 30th, 1974, in Lincoln, Nebraska. As a youth, Swank bounced around a bit, going from Nebraska to Washington to California, developing a love for both gymnastics (Junior Olympian; state finalist) and acting (appearing in The Jungle Book at 9 as Mowgli...

Marie Antoinette’s reign at PBS begins on March 19. The public broadcaster’s new series about the infamous French queen stars Emilia Schüle as the young Austrian archduchess who is married off to Louis, the dauphin of France (Louis Cunningham). It’s just the latest on-screen depiction of the legendary royal. Here are five movies about Marie Antoinette to watch before you binge the new show.
Kirsten Dunst starred in Sofia Coppola’s ‘Marie Antoinette’
At 15 she became a bride. At 19 she became a queen. By 20 she was a legend.

Kirsten Dunst played a young Marie Antoinette in Sofia Coppola’s lavish, occasionally anachronistic 2006 period drama Maria Antoinette. It covers some of the same territory as the new PBS series, including the young queen’s awkward early years at Versailles.

Justin Hartley’s first big project released post-This Is Us will be Netflix’s The Noel Diary, a drama set around the holidays and based on the novel by Richard Paul Evans. Today, Netflix released the first photo featuring Justin Hartley and a canine co-star. The streaming service also announced they’ve set a November 24, 2022 premiere date.
Director Charles Shyer adapted the novel with Rebecca Connor and David Golden.
“I wanted to adapt this novel for a few different reasons. The story of The Noel Diary felt to me like one that could comfortably embrace humor and humanity – while at the same time offer great visual and directorial possibilities. A movie that, as Billy Wilder once said, ‘Could make ’em laugh and make ’em cry.’ I chose to cast Justin Hartley from his work on This Is Us.

I didn’t know Christopher Walken had danced in so many movies but it’s a good thing he has otherwise we wouldn’t have this great supercut to show you. He had the moves in Fatboy Slim’s Weapon of Choice video [watch it here] but put them all together with his movies and it’s something special.

One of the more predictable categories of any Oscar year is Best Costume Design given that the nominees are weeded out so thoroughly that the best/most showy of the final five is usually locked and loaded for the win. But looking a bit deeper into the category, it’s one of the few places that has nominees that are the sole representation for their film, as is the case with The Invisible Woman this year.
Yesterday, I wrote about how bad movies in the tech branches have a reasonable shot of nominations due to how voters view these categories. Which brings us to Costume Design, which historically has been a branch that honors all matter of film. Looking at the history of the category, you can see that a single nomination for a film, like The Invisible Woman is incredibly common. But does that...

"In the week where the film industry honor the six decade career of the late director Ken Russell, comes the announcement of the death of Christopher Logue," writes Rhett Bartlett. "Mr Logue wrote the screenplay for Ken Russell's sole film in 1972 — Savage Messiah," a biopic based on the life of French sculptor Henri-Gaudier Brzeska. "One year before his screenplay, Mr Logue appeared in Ken Russell's 1971 bold film — The Devils, as Cardinal Richelieu, the French clergyman who begins the film by influencing Louis Xiii to raze fortified castles and suppress feudal nobility." Bartlett also notes that Logue appeared as the "Spaghetti-eating Fanatic" in Terry Gilliam's Jabberwocky and "made a brief appearance in Jerzy Skolimowski's Moonlighting (1982) and 19 years later in [Charles Shyer's] The Affair of the Necklace. Christopher Logue died on 2 December 2011, five days after Ken Russell."

Simon Denny Baker was born in Launceston, Tasmania on July 30, 1969. He is 5' 10". His parents, Barry and Elizabeth Baker moved to New Guinea in 1972. Shortly after, his parents divorced. His mother later re-married a butcher named Tom Denny and they lived in Sydney with his sister, Terri. Simon attended Ballina High School. After a time, his mother moved to New South Wales where Simon grew up. He did not know that Denny was not his real father's name. Being raised near the ocean developed his love for the sea and all things water-based, such as surfing and water polo. He recalled, "I didn't grow up with money, but I grew up with a lot of space...I was committed to the ocean." After graduating high school he returned to Sydney and intended to become a nurse, but didn't finish his degree. (Nurse Baker has a nice ring to it.) Thereafter he worked in menial jobs,...

It's said, possibly apocryphally (which is a fancy way of saying that it's a clever lie about the past), that when William Gibson saw Blade Runner in the theater, he left halfway through and had a nervous breakdown in the street because the images he saw on the screen were the same as the ones he was seeing in his head while writing the half-finished Neuromancer. Somehow I doubt that he'd have the same reaction to whatever comes out the recent rumors of a remake/reboot/TV series/game show/tentacle fest that is currently in the works for Blade Runner.

Actors have often said that playing a baddy is the most fun they ever had because they can just let loose. No restrictions, no couth, and often no conscience! When women play bad girl roles we end up with characters with behavior running the gamut from harmless rascal to downright dangerous. There’s no denying some of the most unforgettable roles belong to female characters behaving badly.
These characters are vixens, schemers, vengeful, plotting, and femme fatales that are a lot of fun — and shocking — to watch. Whether these females are manoeuvring people like chess pieces on a board, charming the unsuspecting into danger or out of fortunes, getting even, social climbing or just being straight up bad, these female characters are the best of the baddest characters in film.
