We’re in the last remaining days of October, meaning many of us will be trying to cram in as many horror movies as possible between now and Halloween. For my last round of Shudder picks this month, I thought I’d go with a much looser theme: there’s nothing that ties these titles together except that they’re really good movies I think you should watch. Some you may recognize, others may be less familiar to you. All of them are worth streaming on Shudder.
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, dir. James Whale) It’s not officially October without the Universal Monsters, so big thanks to Shudder for adding most of the big ones to their expanding library of streaming options. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to the classics, but I’ll make the case that Universal never got better than The Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale...

MaryAnn’s quick take… An exquisite miniature puzzle-box pop-up-book of a movie. All is color and light and exhilaration here, a fantastical lark that is sheer mischievous joy. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

When we think of summer movies, we usually think big: action and explosions, superheroes and supervillains. But here’s another kind of perfect — absolutely perfect — summer movie: the exquisite miniature puzzle-box pop-up book that is Lost in Paris. This fourth film from the Belgian clown duo of Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon (who wrote and directed as well as star) pits her hapless Canadian visitor against his insouciant tramp in the City of Lights as she tries to find the elderly aunt (Emmanuelle Riva: Amour) who has run away in order to avoid the social workers who want to plant her in a nursing home.

Bleecker Street has released new photos from the upcoming film Megan Leavey. See this movie – it’s a great film.
From director Gabriela Cowperthwaite (Blackfish), the upcoming drama based on the powerful true story of a marine’s best friend opens in theaters everywhere June 9.
Megan Leavey is based on the true life story of a young marine corporal (Kate Mara) whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. When she is assigned to clean up the K9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive dog, Rex, and is given the chance to train him. You had me at “scary doll.” I don’t do horror movies with scary dolls. That’s pretty much a rule. Ever since Chucky I think I’m permanently scarred. However, far be it from me not to share this incredibly creepy new poster for Annabelle: Creation. For all of you who don’t know, this film is the next (4th) chapter in The Conjuring universe. The story is focused on a dollmaker and his wife, whose daughter died twenty years earlier, as they decide to open their home to a nun and several girls from an orphanage that has been closed. We're into the dead cold of winter, and there's no better place to escape than at a Cineplex theatre.
Luckily, there's tons of great new films to watch in theatres this month. It's a wide variety too, from erotic romances just in time for Valentine's day, action thrillers if that's more your style, and even satirical horror films. What a time to be alive!
We also are still catching up with Oscar contenders, which will be a big part of our watch list leading up to the big ceremony on February 26th. If you're feeling a bit nostalgic, you can also check out our Flashback Film Festival that has...

Most of us know what to expect from a documentary. Mix archive footage, talking heads, maybe some embedded action or sincere agit prop. Laurie Anderson, who directed her own 1986 concert doc "Home of the Brave," has been roaming the world for decades with various performances and installations packed with multimedia. With "Heart of a Dog," the artist-performer is adept at combining her mellifluous narrator voice (remember "O Superman"?) with a wide range of images and music (she decided to provide a score at the last minute) culled from her lifetime of performing. But this is no hodge-podge. She manages to thread a through-narrative, starting with her beloved late dog and reaching an emotional climax involving the losses of her mother and husband Lou Reed, while ruminating and asking deep questions along the way. See this movie (Abramorama, October 21), which is Oscar eligible, and watch our interview, which is a...

We live in a vastly changing cinematic universe. As more and more films steer further away from a release schedule that focuses on an actual in-theater run, the world of video on demand has become a landing ground for bigger and bigger pictures. Once the home of small independent releases trying to make a splash in niche markets, today even studios have begun shortening the theatrical window for specific films, looking to grab a hold of the ever growing VOD market. And now, Netflix may have just given the film world a true game changer.
Ostensibly going date and date, the mighty streaming service juggernaut has teamed with Bleeker Street to give the world a new film entitled Beasts of No Nation, arguably the biggest example of this changing theatrical landscape to date. No, that’s not Immortan Joe in the picture above – it’s jacked-as-hell Ethan Embry painting while being overtaken by satanic influence in his new thriller, The Devil’s Candy. He delivers a powerhouse performance as a father who unlocks an inner demon upon moving into a new home, but Embry’s latest film brings even more clout with the return of director Sean Byrne, who has been quiet since 2009’s The Loved Ones - and what a return it is.
The Devil’s Candy is all about seething, brooding tension, as Byrne builds a demonic story that’s begging to explode in a fiery fury of hellish horrors and heavy metal, but its restraint is even more impressive. The Devil’s Candy is one of those horror films that grips you by the throat and enjoys watching you squirm, dragging you down into a depths of Hell as Metallica riffs usher you in.

The trailers for "Edge of Tomorrow" look cool as heck, but let's just admit it: We're all a little bit skeptical about a new Tom Cruise action movie, especially one that's been bouncing around since 2010 or so.
But not so fast! The embargo has been lifted on "Edge of Tomorrow," and so far the reviews have been really positive. It was a smart move on the studio's part to let journalists start sharing their opinions with readers well in advance of the movie's June 6th premiere. That's the same weekend that "22 Jump Street" comes out, and it looks like "X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "Godzilla" will still be strong competitors at the box office. If the Internet could have damaged Cruise's career, maybe it can bring him back, right?
Here are just a few tidbits from tried and true sources.
Meredith Woerner at io9 enthused, "See This Movie. Go And See This Movie Immediately.

As its title indicates, a single shot sets off a string of chaotic events in the new movie starring Sam Rockwell and William H. Macy.
"A Single Shot" depicts a deer hunter (Rockwell) who accidentally shoots and kills a woman, then discovering she was carrying a suitcase full of money. He grabs the cash and runs, attempting to cover up the murder, only to find out the money belongs to a group of criminals.
David M. Rosenthal ("See This Movie," "Janie Jones") directs the thriller, with Macy starring as the lawyer the hunter hires for representation during his divorce suit with his wife (Kelly Reilly). The film also features Jeffrey Wright, Jason Isaacs, Ted Levine and Melissa Leo.
"Shot" saw its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival and made its way stateside at the Tribeca Film Festival. It will be released Aug. 20 on video-on-demand and Sept. 20 in theaters.

Do you remember your first movie?
Hmmm. My mom is a Wizard of Oz obsessive, so I'm sure it must have been this (on the small screen). Back before there was even VHS (ahhhhh!), I remember she would let me and my two younger brothers stay up late and stage a slumber party in the living room as we attempted to make it to the end. I fully credit my cinephile status to my mom. She made movies feel alive and transcendent.
What's your movie going diet like in a typical year?
Unfortunately, I am your typical cold-weather binge consumer. I blame the studios for this, and no point...

In this job, one of the most rewarding experiences is discovering a new filmmaker who bursts onto the scene with a film seemingly out of nowhere and one which exceeds all expectations.
This year, first time writer/director Meera Menon along with writer/producer Laura Goode debuted their film Farah Goes Bang to audiences at the Tribeca Film Festival. The verdict: a smart, modern coming-of-age tale that pleases on multiple levels.
The film tells the story of Farah, an introverted young woman who sets out on the road with her friends K.J. and Roopa to campaign for John Kerry in the 2004 U.S. Presidential election. Farah, a virgin, struggles in her own skin and is unaware of her own natural beauty. Along the way, she finds things within herself and awakens a dormant confidence she never knew existed.
There’s a veracity to Farah that people seem to automatically connect with.

When the original Grown Ups hit cinemas in 2010, I wasn’t impressed..to say the least. The review included the following… Sometimes, I wonder how movies get the green light? Do you ever wonder how a movie actually got the funding to be made? Well if you never have pondered that question, Grown Ups will change your train of thought. And… There’s no story, there’s no laughs, there is nothing here. I hate to say, given there’s a pretty strong cast here, but Do Not Go To See This Movie. It’s pointless, meandering drivel and a more entertaining time is had by pushing a shopping trolley! Proving that cinema audiences don’t really listen to critics (and sure why would they?) Grown Ups went on to gross a whopping $271, 430, 189 worldwide. With that in mind, a sequel was inevitable. And here’s the trailer for it. I...

I'm still seeing signs for Gangster Squad everywhere, and I'm sick of not indulging my fetish for gay listmaking. So, here's my way of getting a fix: These are the nine hottest hotties of gangster films, and I hope we can agree that a gangster film can either be a classic shoot-'em-up thriller of the 1930s-40s with mensches like Jimmy Cagney and Paul Muni or a stylized modern version that's more about dress-up than White Heat credibility. I've included both versions in this list.
Here are your gangsters, ranked and dapper as hell.
9. Ryan Gosling, Gangster Squad
Forgive me -- I am obligated to include the impossibly debonair Gosling since he makes every suit, glance, and cigarette puff a libidinous delight in Gangster Squad. How does he achieve such angles? I fear he has taken a sander to every pane on his face. I can't explain what he's achieved.

While we still have yet to hear details about the next series of Star Wars movies, we can only hope they will be better than the prequels. That's not to say there weren't some things I like in episodes I-iii (the lava battle between Obi Wan and Anakin remains my favorite duel), but on the whole I think it can be done better. The following list is just a breakdown of three logical advantages and disadvantages I think the next three films will have that the prequels lacked. Enjoy and post your own thoughts below!
Advantage 1: Limited Lucas Involvement.
For fans of the original trilogy who still weep over the fact that Han shot first, then Greedo, then they both did or hates blinking Ewoks this is a huge plus for the new series. Good or bad, George Lucas can't change s*** once it's out. His limited involvement also...

'The Impossible' is a heart-wrenching tale of one family's survival in the most impossible conditions. Bring your tissues if you go see The Impossible because you will cry! But it will be worth it, because it is a truly amazing movie. Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor star in this true story about a family who were vacationing in Thailand when the 2004 tsunami hit. Against all odds, they survived to tell the tale. Five Reasons To See This Movie: #1 Naomi Watts While Ewan does a fantastic job playing the father of a family who were devastated by the tsunami, it is Naomi who steals the show. To be fair, she does get more screen time playing Maria Bennet, the matriarch of the Bennet family. She is severely injured when the tsunami hits the tropical resort she and her family are staying in. Yet, throughout her horrific ordeal, she...

Chicago – Director Mark Andrews is a part of the one of the most important creative brain trusts of the last twenty years — the men and women at Pixar. He was one of the story supervisors for Brad Bird’s “The Incredibles” and took over the directorial reins from Brenda Chapman on this week’s “Brave.” He sat down with Producer Katherine Sarafian to discuss his new film, a Scottish fable about a headstrong young woman named Princess Merida (Kelly Macdonald) and the problems she faces when she asks a witch (Julie Walters) to change her mom (Emma Thompson). I’ve been lucky enough to speak a number of Pixar pioneers and they are all engaging, passionate people — just what you’d expect from such a landmark studio.

Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) gets pulled back into a criminal life in thriller movie Contraband.
Rated R, the film follows Chris Farraday (Wahlberg), a former smuggler who was the best at his job before he gave it up to be with his wife (Kate Beckinsale, Underworld). But when drug kingpin Tim Briggs (Giovanni Ribisi, Columbus Circle) threatens his family, Farraday agrees to do one last run.
Ben Foster (The Messenger) and Lukas Haas (Red Riding Hood) also star in the R-rated movie.
Contraband grossed a decent $65 million in theaters, but got mixed reviews from critics.
New Yorker‘s Den Denby called the film, “perfectly absorbing once it gets going.” But Rolling Stones‘ Peter Travers says, “Wahlberg could sleepwalk through this role, and does. See this movie and you’ll surely follow his lead.”

Entertainment Weekly just released a couple new Exclusive Dark Knight Rises stills. Our usual reaction to new Batman photos, trailers, or new viral promotional things (www.whatistheBATMANmatrix.com) is to look at them, say “cool,” and continue waiting Six More Months for the actual movie to come out, but today, let’s take the sunnier approach of most other websites and treat these three new Dark Knight stills with Incredible Awe and importance, as though anything could possibly come out between now and July that would make me want to see this film any more or less. Let’s excitedly read into some new photos!!! 1. Bane Bane’s arms are crossed and he’s looking downwards! This can only mean one thing: There’s a scene in Dark Knight Rises where Bane goes on a speedslide. Oh Man, maybe he blows up a water park? How do you blow up...

Okay, so The Darkest Hour may not technically be a horror movie, but the science fiction genre has always been a pretty closely related cousin. My guess is that a lot of us horror-lovers also keep a close eye on sci-fi releases, particularly those with an alien invasion or end-of-the-world premise. My hope with this review is to save my fellow Bidites the price of a ticket to a 3D movie with a heartfelt bit of advice: Do Not Go See This Movie.…...

There are the movie-movie pleasures of The Help, the stuff of simple cinematic entertainment, the stuff we go to the movies for. The magnificent performances. The fresh narrative we haven’t seen ten thousand times before. The unsentimental direction that lets you feel your own emotions instead of having them dictated to you. Honestly, these aren’t things that are all that hard to do, and yet their rarity -- particularly found all together all in one film! -- means we should cheer all the harder when we do find them... and we should be sure to see them, too: See this movie! As plain and straightforward, Hollywood glossy storytelling-for-your-enjoyment goes, The Help is a breathtaking success. But there are other things at play, too: the politics of Hollywood, in which race and gender aren’t a factor unless the race isn’t white and the gender isn’t male.

"Now in its 15th year," writes Manohla Dargis in the New York Times, Views from the Avant-Garde, opening today and running through Monday, "has undergone a growth spurt since 2010 and has added a fourth day and enough titles to make your eyes tear from the ecstasy of excess or just exhaustion…. The titular monarch of [Ken] Jacobs's contribution, Seeking the Monkey King, appears to be the American greed and corruption that have sent the director into an agony of despair, if happily not a paralyzing one. Set to the music of Jg Thirlwell, this digital video largely consists of valleys and hills of what look like crumpled foil that Mr Jacobs, through his manipulations, has turned into landscapes that shift, undulate and seem to pop off the screen as if in 3D. Often tinted golden yellow and blue (colors used in the silent era usually to denote day and night), the...

Nothing says "See This Movie" quite like text on a black background. If you're headed to the San Diego Comic-Con looking for some Total Recall-themed eye candy, that's all you're gonna get!
The movie ditches the Martian storyline from the original pic and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai. Colin Farrell's Douglas Quaid is a factory worker in the latter who begins to believe he is a spy — although he doesn't know for which side.
Joining Colin Farrell and John Cho in the film, which is shooting in Toronto, are Bryan Cranston as the villain with Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel as the female leads, Quaid's wife and revolutionary girl friend, respectively. Bokeem Woodbine portrays Quaid's best friend, Ethan Hawke is on board for a cameo, and Bill Nighy landed the role of Kuato, the leader of the resistance.

With Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs, and Attack the Block hitting theaters on the packed weekend of July 29th, Warner Bros. thinks it can rival some of the biggest films of the summer. At the beginning of the year the studio moved its romantic/comedy/drama Crazy, Stupid, Love. from an April release to this date, citing “overwhelmingly positive test screening results” in which “audiences loved” the film. With its poster debut (via Yahoo) after a very promising trailer, we take a look at the facts thus far to see if this could be more than just your average rom-com. Check out the poster below followed by many more details and screening impressions.
Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, who helmed the severely underseen I Love You Phillip Morris and scripted Bad Santa, the ensemble cast includes Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, John Carroll Lynch, Marisa Tomei,...

"Bridesmaids" is almost here, and it looks like director Paul Feig is getting some pre-wedding jitters, if his recent tweets are any indication. Of course, he's got nothing to worry about — early buzz is very positive, with many members of the Twitter-Wood community already rallying behind the Kristen Wiig comedy.
But critical acclaim doesn't always translate to financial success, of course. Hollywood producer Jeff Katz hopped on Twitter and went over the latest tracking data for this summer's hottest movies, and some of the results may surprise you.
Plus, if you thought Sarah Michelle Gellar's anti-"Buffy" reboot stance would slow the movie's progress down, you're in for a rude awakening: screenwriter Whit Anderson says it's very much still on track.
I'm @roundhoward and this is Twitter-Wood for May 12, 2011.
"Bridesmaids" Jitters: @paulfeig In honor of opening weekend, my nose has presented me with an enormous new zit. Thanks, nose!

Fast And Furious 5: Rio Heist is the fifth instalment in the long running Fast & Furious franchise. The first film came out in 2001 and kick started a bit of a genre revival. Biker Boyz anyone? The usual suspects are all present and correct. Brian O'Connor (Paul Walker) and Dom Toretto's (Vin Diesel) uneasy friendship being one of the main focus points of the films. Uneasy because O'Connor used to be a cop and also because he's now dating Dom's little sister Mia (Jordana Brewster). And of course the stars of the film, the cars.
The set up is quite simple. Not having seen Fast & Furious Parts 3 and 4, it's safe to assume that Dom was arrested at the end of the last one.The prison bus kind of gave that away. Obviously the best course of action is to bust him out of his imminent incarceration. If you aren't laughing within the first five minutes,...

20th Century Fox has changed the title to their Plant of the Apes prequel yet again. At first it was called Caesar, then Caesar: Rise of the Apes, the studio settled on Rise of the Apes for awhile, but today they decided to change it to Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
What the hell is up with movie titles these days? Most of them really suck, and this Rise of the Planet of the Apes just seems like to much. I guess Fox just wants the title to have more of a connection to the previous Planet of the Apes films. The next thing you know it will be changed to Rise of Caesar of the Planet of the Apes of Please go See this Movie.
The film was directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), and it stars James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Andy Serkis and Brian Cox.

At the end of the latest trailer for the highly anticipated blockbuster-to-be "Super 8", the announcer mentions that the film has not yet been rated. But, we think the preview needs to come with a different warning: Will Most Certainly Cause Goosebumps And A Dire Need To See This Movie Rightthisinstant.
After all, here's a good, old fashioned movie that's not only produced by one of the masters of cinema, Steven Spielberg, but it's written and directed by J.J. Abrams, a man who has made television an event over the past few years, helped make "Star Trek" cool for a new generation, among other amazing achievements.
From the teaser and full-length trailers, we've come to learn that "Super 8" surrounds a group of kids in 1979 who witness a horrendous train accident while they're filming a movie on their super 8 camera. Some very strange things start to happen in their small...

Sam Rockwell is good in everything. There, I said it. It’s on the internet now, and thus irrefutable (right?).
Rockwell in Duncan Jones' Moon. See this movie immediately.Anyway, because he is good in everything, anything he signs up for is at least worth watching, if only to see him in action. And if Cogan’s Trade wasn’t already shaping up to have a strong cast as we reported earlier this month, we can now say that Rockwell is, for all intents and purposes, officially in as the film’s star. But with Brad Pitt already on board, will writer/director Andrew Dominik complete the trio he formed in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford?...

Corey Haim's last film, American Sunset, is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Haim died way to young and his films are a lasting memory of his contribution to cinema. Below is a video of Haim talking about his role in the film as well as a trailer for the movie.
Synopsis:
American Sunset unravels a mysterious conspiracy with numerous spellbinding plot twists revolving around a kidnapping ploy that robs a devoted husband of his true love, while playing a game that prolongs her safety by correctly responding to the kidnapper’s riddles. One wrong answer means fatal consequences. As the pursuit to save his wife plunges Haim’s character deeper into a corrupt world, the greedy, deceptive and immoral motives become increasingly obvious; this is not just a random kidnapping for money, this is deadly personal.
Here is what the film's producer had to say about Corey's performance.

“Machete don’t text.”
Danny Trejo is Machete, a former Federal agent who’s organization completely betrayed him. Their leader Torrez (Steven Seagal), killed his family and left him to die. Machete isn’t going out that easily. He resurfaces as a Mexican laborer just as a revolution is brewing. The local senator (Robert DeNiro) and his gang of renegade bandits (Lead by Don Johnson) are trying to stop immigration by any means necessary. This includes investigating a local taco stand that they believe to be the headquarters for an immigration ring, lead by Luz (Michelle Rodriguez). Machete is now being hunted and targeted by the bad guys, while being encouraged to fight for his people. Mix all of this together and you are in for one hell of a ride.

Consensus amongst the Movie Geeks is that Winter’S Bone is damn near perfect! The film is batting .1000, so to speak, two-for-two in it’s star rating of 5 out of 5, and the movie hasn’t even opened in most theaters yet. While attending Sundance 2010, the film was reviewed in overwhelming favor, and while attending SXSW 2010, I reviewed the film with unparalleled admiration. So, now that Winter’S Bone is opening in Saint Louis on Friday, June 18th, 2010 — I urge anyone and everyone to Go See This Movie!

What leads us to seek revenge, when we’ve been wronged? How can a revenge film be touching and hilarious, and in the end, satisfying to all that watch it? Jean Pierre Jeunet attempts to answer these questions in one of my favorite films that I had the honor of seeing while at this year’s SXSW in Austin, Texas.
After an accidental drive by shooting leaves our hero, Bazil, with a bullet lodged in his skull, he sets down a path that will lead him to the doors of two arms manufacturers, who essentially led to the death of a family member, as well as the bullet he carries with him, and cannot remove, lest he risk his own life. On this journey he is taken in by a rag tag, group of misfits, living in what is essentially a trash heap, but in reality is the largest swiss army knife at their disposal.
