The end has come too soon.
ljs379918 June 2014
Oh why...

Finally, there was a show that was perfect for me. I love the wait of a week between each episode and especially with this type of series, where cliffhangers are oft-repeated. Finally, I had something to look forward to on a Tuesday.

But now, it has ended..

But what an end it was! Shock and emotion are the two things this finale provoked in me. The shock was ironic because I knew I would be shocked, nevertheless it came as a surprise, if that makes any sense. I especially loved the use of tense music in various acts, where the only sounds to be heard were sudden abstract sounds, which increased the enjoyment as it made me feel so much more uncertain and uncomfortable about the whole situation, in the best possible way.

In the end, justice was served and the characters got what they deserved, in the good way as well as the bad way.

This was definitely one of the best series of 2014 and one of the best criminal drama/comedies of the last 10 years.

Please, please, please let there be Season 2.

Explosive closure to one of the greatest mini-series in recent history!
deltaop18 June 2014
When this series started, I was skeptical about how much it would achieve. Now, after 10 pitch-perfect episodes, I stand corrected. This series has done the impossible. It has crawled out of the shadow of the Fargo that gave birth to it and has carved its own identity. This is Hawley's Fargo.

Gripping and satisfying, the finale was brilliant throughout. Some part of me was expecting the appearance of a wood-chipper somewhere but Morton's Fork had more poetic ends in store though still with their fair shares of blood, gore and unrelenting suspense.

What I really liked about this series was the juxtaposition. One one hand the life is calm, unassuming, almost naive in the small town of Duluth and on the other there are dark forces prowling through the residents of this town who are oblivious to these forces until the very end.

The bloody game of chess between Malvo and Nygaard utilized these people as pawns and was very satisfying but I must add that the checkmate left a little to be desired.

All in all, I loved this series. The acting, writing, cinematography and, of course, the music were all top-notch. One of those series that I would gladly rewatch over and over again until I get bored, which I probably never will.

So so perfect
doogal-6885019 May 2017
I so loved the Fargo movie. It never gets old. This series carries on the vibe and black humour of that movie but it is its own presentation. The writing is first class. To take on the movie and turn it into a series takes a lot of guts. Billy Bob is simply magnificent in this. He is cool as Bad Santa but a lesson should be learned when writing screenplays. You don't have to swear to be menacing. I wish Hollywood would get that because they have put out a lot of dross lately. Bad Santa 2 being a prime example IMHO. Just filth meant to be comedy. At least the original had a bit of heart. But I think this is Thornton's best work. Martin Freeman is incredible. Also his best. I always love his work but he has shown if he is challenged with material he can really step up. He got huge Kudos for Sherlock and he has even gotten better as far as I am concerned. Alison is wonderful as Molly and is a character similar to Francis McDormand's Oscar winning role. She does the role proud. In this episode two things stood out. Bob Odenkirk's speech about how he felt and his future. He is one hell of an actor. Molly's speech to Lester about throwing the second glove out of the train. If you get that you get the pair. Lester was confused but this was saying if you get either Lester or Lorne you get both. Really brilliant writing and I am in awe. I am about to watch Season 2 and I am drooling at the thought.

Season 1

Review By Kamal K

Love it. Wanted to binge the whole season in one sitting! Decided to savor one episode a day. Billy Bob Thorton was phenomenal! His performance was simply brilliant. Like a force of pure evil and genius coming over this small town and it's residents. Freeman is equally captivating as we watch the evolution of his character Lester from unlucky, passive, and inconsequential to sociopathic ego maniac. It's also hilarious and wickedly clever. Outstanding!

Season 1: Consistent and confident, delivering a cold, odd, tense, funny, charismatic blood-soaked 10 episodes
bob the moo7 December 2014
I let this show go past me at first, since when I heard of it I didn't know if the idea of remaking a movie and stretching it out to 10 hours was a good idea. Hearing good things later, I took a look and was more positive when I saw that it was not a remake of the film, but rather another set of stories happening within the same universe – albeit with some overlaps and connections to the events of the film. While this is the case that it is not a direct lift for television, it is clearly meant to replicate the world of the Cohen brothers' films, in particular Fargo but there is a lot in here which connects to their more general tone. The risk with this is that it would serve to not only remind how great Fargo and other films from the siblings are by virtue of how far off the mark it falls; fortunately though, although it is not quite at that standard, it never really disappoints on its own or by comparison.

Using the world of Fargo along with elements of Blood Simple, No Country and others, what we get is a story where the influence of a hired killer spreads through a much simpler community, bringing out the worst in some and spreading fear and death through others. In doing this it also mixes the odd with the comic, with the dark, with the violent, and with the tense. It is a very effective mix and it works very well throughout this season. It is most clear as to how well it works because, even as some aspects are weaker and a lot of the plot actually doesn't make logical sense, but it all still engages because of how well delivered and sold it is.

The cold, slow tone is very effective at building tension and a sense of foreboding, and this is played well throughout the 10 episodes. There are some elements where the narrative reaches beyond what works, and some characters are maybe a bit too broadly drawn; but at the same time the sense of the odd and the tension continue to work to keep you with it regardless of what happens. The dialogue at times is a little off the Cohen's best, but considering it has 10 hours to deliver and does so mostly consistently, it can be forgiven for not always clearly the bar as well as it does in the majority of scenes. Technically the look and feel of the film add to the cold tension; the slowly moving camera is perhaps overused but it never really got old for me because one could not be sure when it was leading to something or when it was just hanging there with the suggestion. The slow-burn approach is often cleverly applied and it was hard not to be impressed by the way it thinks nothing of staying out of the building and showing 2 minutes of walls while inside the biggest action sequence of the season plays out.

The casting is very much the cherry on the top of all of this. Thornton has worked with the Cohens a couple of times now, so he knows the approach and he draws heavily on their iconic still "force of nature" killers. He is very enjoyable throughout, with a sense of charisma and menace which works in context really well. Freeman may never top Macy in a similar role, but he is mostly pretty assured and sells his character well. Tolman and Hanks are very engaging, with good performances and without the distraction of them being quite as well known as others. The use of Carradine is great and he brings a lot to small scenes – in particular the one he shares with Thornton is very well played. Odenkirk is a very good bit of casting and he plays his comical sheriff in a way that is funny but also has heart. The casting continues with roles for Goldberg, Howerton, Platt, Key & Peele, and others. I will not say all of them work as well as others, but generally the casting works.

I think the show has been a bit over-hyped, because it is not without weakness, and there are aspects that you need to go with; however generally it does deliver and engage with such consistency and confidence that the viewer is more than happy to go with it. I was genuinely surprised by how well it "does the Cohens" and just how strong, entertaining, tense, fun, horrific, inventive, and fresh so much of the season felt. Well worth seeking out.

Review of the 1st season: Overall 9/10
8512225 August 2015
Greetings from Lithuania.

"Fargo" (2014-) is definitely the best series i saw in a while (probably from the last season of "Breaking Bad"). Script is simply amazing - realistic, plausible yet very entertaining and involving. It has great characters, very involving plot, shocking scenes, terrific cinematography, directing and everything a great show should have. Pilot of "Fargo" was pure 10/10, while next 9 episodes were solid 9/10.

Overall, "Fargo" 1st season is great one. Everything here works so well that you will be glued to your screen during whole 10 episodes. I will definitely look forward to 2nd season.

It's refreshing for once not to have a cliffhanger. Warning: Spoilers
Cliffhangers season endings have become really become clichés, especially in the last few years when they've been over used to give already rabid fans one more reason to stay hooked. That was not the case with FX's excellent series FARGO, which wrapped itself up in a episode that left nothing hanging; everyone got what they deserved.

But it was a great ride getting to this last episode in a show filled with unusually well detailed and compelling characters, most of whom we would have enjoyed spending more time with. If this episode lacked the plot twists and turns of earlier installments, it made up for it with a sense of resolution and payoffs that made sense.

Going in, there was no certainty that the good guys in Bemidji were going to win, for Lorne Malvo and Lester Nygaard had proved themselves to be the most cunning and devious of villains, and we really worried about what would be the fates of Molly and Gus when the inevitable showdown came.

In the end decency and community won out over toxic evil. Many thought Lorne Malvo to be the embodiment of Satan himself (that goatee helped); a hit-man who thought that humans were nothing more than predators and that the law of the jungle was all that mattered. Through every episode we had watched him prove himself more than a match for anyone unlucky enough to cross his path; in the end I'd like to think the wolf who guided Gus to Malvo's cabin was the agent of a higher power that had said enough was enough.

If Malvo was the personification of Satanic evil, than Lester was his equal in cunning and selfishness. "Is this what you want?" Malvo asked him last week in their fateful elevator confrontation in Vegas, and the arrogant Lester, who had gotten away with so much, just couldn't say no. The final image of Lester, literally running out of thin ice, was poetic justice indeed.

What ultimately did in Malvo and Lester was that they simply could not understand that goodness, decency and community could be every bit the equal, if not superior, to predatory evil and cunning.

All praise to the actors, who simply did the best work of their careers; we've seen Billy Bob Thornton do a lot of bad guys, but there's been nothing like his Lorne Malvo (was it short for malevolent?); unlike Dexter or Walter White, nobody was rooting for him. Same can be said for Martin Freeman's Lester Nygaard, our hate for him grew with each episode and yet he made us want to spend time this loathsome character just to see how he was going to get out of another tight spot and stay ahead of Molly.

And were there ever two more likable heroes than Allison Tollman's Molly and Colin Hank's Gus; they might have appeared average in every way, but looks were deceiving. Tollman is truly the breakout star of the show, and I can't wait to see what she does next.

There were a few faults with this finale: after Molly's dogged pursuit of Lester, it seemed odd that she didn't play a bigger part in the take down at the end. And I would like to have seen a wrap up of some supporting characters from earlier in the season, like the deaf Mr. Wrench. I would like for the writer's to have had Oliver Platt's super market owner Stavros hook up with Kate Walsh's Gina Hess, because those two deserved each other. Then there was Gina's two punk bully sons, what about them?

All in all, it was a fine reworking of the Coen Brothers movie masterpiece, nearly 20 years old now. Will there be another season? Will we see Molly and Gus again? Don't know and don't see how they'll top season 1. Maybe they shouldn't try.

I Am So Pleased!
Hitchcoc8 October 2015
Warning: Spoilers
For the past year, I have had friends tell me I have to see this show. Since I missed the first few episodes, I chose not to start it. When it became available on Hulu, I thought I'd give it a shot. Now I am hooked for the second season opener next week. I am a Minnesotan and have been to Fargo many times. My daughter is a graduate of Bemidji State University. I'm not one of those people that gets all bent out of shape concerning the accents and the bucolic atmosphere. There are actually people who speak that way. It's just not as pervasive as they make it out to be. Anyway, "Fargo," the original movie is in my top ten. It is black humor to the highest level. The television series has almost trumped the movie, although it doesn't matter to me one way or the other.

The final episode is priceless. I loved that we weren't left with a narrative hook at the end, forcing us to wait to see how things get sorted out in the next season opener. These are ten tightly crafted and carefully plotted pieces. Some have complained that there aren't a bunch of surprises in the last episode. But this is where the characters have the last word. The new Lester, who couldn't leave well enough alone, puts in play the endgame, by confronting Lorne in Las Vegas. We see two examples of evil: Lorne, who seems beset by devils and Lester, who throws away his own humanity and betrays those who love him, so he can save his own skin. We have the usual assortment of careless, trusting people, who have no idea how ingenious Lorne Malvo is (and how incredibly dangerous). There are those two idiot FBI men who don't have a clue, thinking they are a match for the guy.

The scene where Lorne goes into Lester's house, not knowing that the unbalanced insurance salesman has literally set a trap for him, is priceless. We have the appearance of the white wolf as Gus makes his way to Lorne's hideout. Lorne's face after he is shot is that of a vicious wolf. And, of course, Lester, who has been skating on thin ice for over a year, finally reaches the end of the lake. What a terrific show. I can't imagine how they can match this next year, but I'm hoping it works for them. Can't wait.

Blew the film out of the water for me. Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thorton were incredible. Episode 9 was the best out of them all. This episode was great too but a little bit anticlimactic. Lester's story, however, had a great ending.

Fargo: S1E10 "Morton's Fork" Review - King Cadmium
kingcadmium3 March 2022
Molly takes the lead while Gus pursues a hunch. Lester manipulates a situation, and Malvo finds a new target.

What I Liked:

The cinematography is solid, and each scene perfectly implements its beautiful and mesmerizing music score. On top of that, each actor gives a strong performance, with Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman being the clear standouts.

Malvo is one of the most intriguing individuals you will see on television, with Thornton's portrayal being nothing short of superb, along with Freeman's portrayal of Lester.

Lester's transformation saw him become the most interesting character on this show, even more so than Malvo. As he became the antagonist in his own story, it was great to see him one-up Malvo, the man who sent him on his dark path of destruction.

What I Disliked:

Numerous characters never received any closure. Chaz, Kitty, Gordo, Mr Wrench, The Hess Family, and Stavros instantly came to mind, as these characters never appear or are even mentioned in this finale.

Malvo's demise was anti-climatic and ultimately forgettable. While I'm not against Gus killing him, it would have been interesting to see him face some form of punishment rather than receiving a citation for bravery.

Overall:

Fargo's finale is not without its flaws, nor is it a highlight of this fantastic season, but this was still a high-quality conclusion that mostly satisfies. You would be hard-pressed to find many shows more tautly written and produced in its premiere season.

8/10

Slightly Disappointing.
nairtejas18 June 2014
I don't know why it was tad disappointing as the season finale. Maybe I was expecting more or had preconceived ideas of how it would end. Trust me, none of use would've guessed what happens in 2014's greatest show yet.

It starts off where last episode left. Lester tries to cover up what he did, although his accusations are fueled by Molly's ever-increasing doubts. Lorne Malvo is ever fine as he continues his prowl; his genius is again evinced throughout the one-hour tale. The episode felt like it was made so that the whole series could end. But I really liked the ideas of "commit a crime once and the world is made of glass."

Climax is slightly off to what we expect but still, it gives closure to the whole 10 week anticipation. The performances are great, no doubt but the plot also slightly deviates from reality. What was credible in the first nine episodes suddenly becomes incredible. Unlike Breaking Bad, the writers of Fargo fail to maintain the panache of quirky telling in their last episode.

BOTTOM LINE: This is not the best episode of Fargo neither it is the best finale of a series. But if you are a fan, try to see the glass half full. Like I did and rated it 7/10. And about accolades, I think it might get few nods.

disappointing finale
rdvljunk23 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Now the accidental meeting of Lester and Malvo was already questionable with Lester running of, this finally is just Malvo seeking revenge (why), trying to find Lester and kill him. Now the episode goes slooow, until the last few minutes. Now the death of Malvo was well set-up, but Lester sending in his pregnent wife into the place were Malvo was probably waiting was so-so (and why are the passports in his shop and not like with normal people at home) and questionable, but the death of Lester squeezed into the last few seconds of the episode made a disappointing end of of furthermore great S01.

A Beautiful Masterpiece of an Ending
serbian_00718 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. At the edge of my seat, all smiles. What a release. What a season. The story has ended. Some beloved characters have been killed off in dramatic fashion.

Lorne Malvo is the coldest most brilliant criminal I have ever seen portrayed on screen. Billy Bob Thornton's performance this season was simply epic. It was a beautiful ending, a just desserts; the characters all got what they deserved. You can run from the law, see, but you cannot hide from the "law". Everyone always gets caught, if not by the law, then by the "law", i.e. fate/ karma. Every man gets his just desserts.

I just don't understand how this show can continue into season 2 based on this ending. Will there be a new plot, new characters, a new time line based on another time period and another story? Will Fargo become like American Horror Story by having different stories in different seasons? I don't know. Probably. Or will season 2 see Lester has actually survived and be based on Lester's trial? I don't know. Probably, probably not.

All I know is, I really enjoyed Fargo. It was an amazing series. I hate to see it go. Come back for season 2, please.

The story ends spectacularly
TheDonaldofDoom20 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Wow wow wow. It was inevitable that a character like the slimy Lester had to get his comeuppance eventually, and he sure did, in a gratifying way. It's fitting that even after everything went down he escaped for two weeks and kept going all the way to the end, never giving up. That seems like him. In the end, he would rather fall through thin ice and die on his own terms than be captured. At least he got what he deserved. In fact, pretty much all the characters in the finale got what they deserved. Molly is the new chief of police, Gus is a mailman, Lorne is dead. It's a real happy ending, compared to the original movie which although ending in the capture of the criminal, had quite a grim tone.

Lester's journey this episode revealed what an unpleasant person he really is. Instead of crying real tears for his dead wife, he immediately thought up a plan to absolve himself of her murder and pretended to be all distraught at her death. In reality, he didn't care; the only way her death mattered to him was in how it could lead the police to him.

Gus, meanwhile, is pushed to murder. It can easily be seen as a victory given that Lorne is a villain, but the nasty smile on his face as he dies says it all: Lorne's last triumph has been to bring out the monster in Gus. What he has constantly been doing since episode one is bringing out people's deepest, darkest animalistic instincts and this is no different.

But Lorne hardly goes out in a blaze of glory. Throughout this season, seeing him carry out his objectives flawlessly has led us to believe he's almost a god. He clearly considers himself above everyone else, seeing people as his playthings. But he makes mistakes too. He puts his foot in a bear trap, something we wouldn't have expected Lorne to do. Then, when Gus shoots him in the chest, he continues breathing and for a brief moment, it looks like he's immortal. Then Gus shoots him in the head and he dies. Looks like Lorne Malvo was just an ordinary mortal after all.

Review of season 1 finale Morton's Fork
michaelchikliscares9 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Really good episode but I really hoped that that Billy Bob Thorton would surive for sole reason of getting phased into season 2. But enjoyed it never the less, I think this shows big mistake is to type cast Bob Odenkirk to play really really stupid sheriff of small town and everybody in a small town is portrayed as really fragile and stupid police officer , expect from Solverson.

Those dumb FBI guys were a really annoying plot line as well, how the hell they got into the field again is mind boggling writing.

But the thing if Fargo is based on real events I can't really change this scenario for the show.

My favourite of the three first seasons
searchanddestroy-118 January 2022
This one is for me the the best season of the three first. I have not seen the fourth yet; it was supposed to be aired on Netflix and it seemed to have failed. But I will watch it later. Back to this one, the FARGO the movie spirit and atmosphere is well followed and the ending is awesome. Unfortunately the second season was totally spoiled by a bad ending, it deceived me so much. The third is OK, just in the middle in my personal rate. Billy Bob Thornton and the other lead character are in the perfect adequate roles.

One of masterpiece in All over world's Film Industry
snlyadav15518 August 2019
Billy bob played the one of most prominent role , I've never seen role played in such a wonderful way that I can see him as Lorne Malvo all day. The on edge perfection of everything Thornton tops the role far ahead of Martin Freeman but still Martin played the role as of the requirements of character Both are great but you'll like the character of Lorne Malvo more and more , you would like to him on screen all the time but he will be there for very short time and will steal the show Like one is Las Vegas the role of him with beautiful Helena Mattsson will drop your heart From Direction point of View again 10/10 I wish this Lorne malvo character to see again in future This character I will collate with Mr White from Breaking Bad both were great and YES again in no one in near future will stand against their role Bill Thornton for Malvo and Bryan Cranston for Walter White will always be one of only their own Again for show Everything is just great music , direction , acting , location, character . I can't stop writing for this shoe but it will turn into total spoilers

Season 1 review
mjw230524 January 2024
Being completely new to the Fargo world (I never saw the movie) I was recommended this series by a friend and WOW! I need more friends like him.

After a wonderful opening episode crammed full of dark humour, intrigue and bloody murder. The series slows down a little to let us catch our breath and get to know the characters and their quirky accents (which I fell in love with)

The cast are all great, but Billy Bob Thornton steals the show with his brilliant portrayal of the "bad man" of the series. Writing, direction, pacing. It's all on point and makes for a riveting watch that keeps you wondering what's coming next.

I found the entire season deliciously funny and couldn't help myself from laughing out loud at the worst of times.

Really great season 9/10.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay first of all I love this show and this season

They first do a one year later thing. And They solve the problem in 1 Epidode and a half!!!!!!.So the whole season could have been that way are what this is mindless. Then Lester Nygard a guy who has absolutely no experience shooting guns.Gets to shot a hitman that has kill like 50 people this season and who nows who many more. Then again they find malvo (the best charecter EVER) and simply kill him.I know that he had his leg hurt but again this guy is a hitman.I get that the payoff, the cop finally gets him and kills him.But how can kill a character that is smart, dangerous and above all badass. And You and up killing them that way it would be more epic a gun fight we're at least the cops gets real hurt and end up killing him.there is now tension at all.Thats why(sorry that I had to compare) In a series called breaking bad a villain that same is badass, dangerous, and are hitmans have this fight with tension that keeps you at the edge of your seat.I think this could have been a better ending to an amazing series at General.Once again I love this show and I just simply think that the ending could have been better.

Way to ruin a great season (S1) with the last two episodes
electron_112 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
As if it wasn't bad enough to end the season on a formulaic happy note where the "good guys" save the day and come out on top--one of whom even gets promoted when she should've been fired or killed earlier in the season, the writers had to kill off the two greatest and most interesting characters on the entire show: Malvo and Lester.

Assuming the Hollywood ending was written to parallel the film's, the writers really missed an excellent opportunity to end the season on a less contrived note, one that didn't stink of the triumph of good over evil theme ever so present in storybooks and mainstream US cinema and TV shows.
