Series five begins with a clever mystery.

This is a terrific start to Series five, which sees Humphrey take on a case, which appears to be impossible to solve. How on Earth can someone commit a murder, when they were known to be elsewhere?

A very clever plot, with strong characters, and a funny side story of Humphrey acquiring a new yacht.

Emma Rugby and Neve McIntosh were both excellent, but what a waste of the talents of Julian Ovenden, I don't think he said a word, the show has always had a strange habit of wasting talent.

A great start to a very strong fifth series. 8/10

Solid, though not impressive.

Warning: Spoilers
"Death in Paradise" has been one of my favorite TV shows since I started to watch it out of boredom a month ago. After Ben Miller left though, the show has not been the same. The third season started well with "Death of a Detective", but then continued as average one could get. Same can be said about the fourth season, which was even more unimpressive than the third. The fifth season starts off on a good note with this episode, but I am very curious does the season maintains its goodness.

Let's start with what's solid about this entry,

. The production values are great as usual. The episode looks and sounds wonderful. The acting is pretty good all around.

. The murder mystery did mostly engage with nice twists, turns and a very satisfying solution (the women did the deed).

. Quirkiness of the humor is also back. Really liked the audience learns more on the JP character.

But...

. The mystery did not keep its intrigue and at times felt a bit dull- like it was missing something.

. Also, DI Goodman did not act like himself in "The Complex Murder". Was it just me or he was throwing accusations around? Don't know...

Overall, solid, but a not great.

Millionaire marine biologist Dan Hagen is the head of a team studying the effects of pollution on coral formation. He is found murdered in the cabin of his yacht, while the members of the dive team are underwater examining the coral reef.

Dwayne and J. P. investigate a locked storage container owned by Dan Hagen, Dwayne suspects they had been followed. The pair get locked in and, when DI Goodman lets them out they discover a quantity of cocaine.

The oceanagraphic team is beset with intrigue jealousy and animosity, but who would have the motive or opportunity to do the deed.

Humphrey wants to feel more at home on Saint Marie by blending in with the locals, knowing sweet f.a. about boats he buys a heap of tat forlornly hoping to lick it into shape. When Humphrey discovered that the Commissioner is a luminary in the island yacht club, he rather stupidly expects to be accepted as a member.

Warning: Spoilers
There are times when I watch a TV show and can't help thinking how actors get through scenes without cracking up with laughter and that it must sometimes require take after take. It must have been so when the very blonde wife screams open mouthed in the face of her very dead husband. One female character already did the body discovery scream but apparently they needed a louder, more piercing one. (And really, do people scream in the presence of a dead body? An unfortunate man dropped dead of a heart attack on a busy city street and my friends and I witnessed the event. None of us screamed nor did anyone else.)

Anyway, this episode of "Death In Paradise" is clever as usual with its twisty turny resolution and the requisite red herrings. It has a couple of things that would never happen in the real world such as an airline attendant becoming a marine biologist based on being the wife of one and within the span of mere months. And Florence continues to wear -- as did DS Camille Bordey -- inappropriate clothing. (C'mon, from a previous episode, she wore short shorts and an off-shoulder blouse for the courtroom where she was presumed to testify. An officer of the court wouldn't dress like that. And in this, she wore a very flimsy dress to go out on the sea in a boat. Sensible women wear pants. Because the odds of slipping and falling are high.)

All in all, and even with its little foibles, "Death" is still entertaining and clever. A good watch for mystery and comedy together.

Warning: Spoilers
Anyway, The Complex Murder opens season five of Death in Paradise, of which I became an instant fan when it debuted over a decade ago. I really enjoy watching Death in Paradise, and it's not taxing on the mind after a hard day getting through a world that's crazy and all init. Anyway, The Complex Murder guest stars Emma Rigby and Joshua Hill.

One thing, I wonder how the police obtain the photos of the suspects for their whiteboard, like really at the crime scene do they kindly ask the suspects to pose for the whiteboard init, I don't quite get it. Anyway, more credit should also be given to the two paramedics who turn up at the crime scene.
