1. Inception (2010)

PG-13 | 148 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

74 Metascore

A thief who steals corporate secrets through the use of dream-sharing technology is given the inverse task of planting an idea into the mind of a C.E.O., but his tragic past may doom the project and his team to disaster.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe

Votes: 2,552,346 | Gross: $292.58M

It's built on an remarkably original idea that finds a thrilling balance between action and intellectualism. It continued Christopher Nolan's exploration of cognition and psychology and best of all, it didn't hold the audience's hand.

One of the most remarkable things that came out of this film was the spark of conversation in its aftermath - everyone was discussing the puzzles that it presented. I remember the screening where I watched it, you could feel everyone in the room holding their breath as the final frame played out, and the ensuing reaction of people groaning and shouting was simply incredible. It got me thinking about the value of the collective theatric experience.

2. American History X (1998)

R | 119 min | Crime, Drama

62 Metascore

Living a life marked by violence, neo-Nazi Derek finally goes to prison after killing two black youths. Upon his release, Derek vows to change; he hopes to prevent his brother, Danny, who idolizes Derek, from following in his footsteps.

Director: Tony Kaye | Stars: Edward Norton, Edward Furlong, Beverly D'Angelo, Jennifer Lien

Votes: 1,186,744 | Gross: $6.72M

It's a brutal story of race and transformation with harrowing performances from both its leads.

3. Amélie (2001)

R | 122 min | Comedy, Romance

70 Metascore

Despite being caught in her imaginative world, Amelie, a young waitress, decides to help people find happiness. Her quest to spread joy leads her on a journey where she finds true love.

Director: Jean-Pierre Jeunet | Stars: Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz, Rufus, Lorella Cravotta

Votes: 794,482 | Gross: $33.23M

I just love the vibe and quirk of this film- it spins magic around you and pulls you in.

4. Back to the Future (1985)

PG | 116 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

87 Metascore

Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover

Votes: 1,307,571 | Gross: $210.61M

I'm a sucker for Time Travel stories and Back to The Future is a classic. The character dynamic of the two leads is just great fun on top of an already exciting film.

5. Blue Valentine (2010)

R | 112 min | Drama, Romance

81 Metascore

The relationship of a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.

Director: Derek Cianfrance | Stars: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, John Doman, Faith Wladyka

Votes: 211,424 | Gross: $9.74M

It's perhaps the most honest meditation on love that has ever graced cinema. The film is both brutal and endearing at times, with natural and believable performances by both the leads. At times its tough to watch but it's an important movie that rejects the fairy-tale lives we hold in our heads.

6. Children of Men (2006)

R | 109 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea.

Director: Alfonso Cuarón | Stars: Julianne Moore, Clive Owen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Caine

Votes: 529,587 | Gross: $35.55M

Alfonso Cuarón paints an incredible bleak universe and plants a tiny seed of hope in it. It's perhaps one of my most favourite movies of all time for both its craft and the nature of its human story. The long takes are masterful - they pull you in without you even realizing. If you ever get to see this on the big screen, don't miss it.

7. Cast Away (2000)

PG-13 | 143 min | Adventure, Drama, Romance

74 Metascore

A FedEx executive undergoes a physical and emotional transformation after crash landing on a deserted island.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Tom Hanks, Helen Hunt, Paul Sanchez, Lari White

Votes: 639,029 | Gross: $233.63M

The reason this movie sticks in my mind has mostly to do with the way it ends. I was pretty young when I saw it and it gave me a lot to think about with regards to the process of how a man in isolation would reintegrate into society.

8. District 9 (2009)

R | 112 min | Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller

81 Metascore

Violence ensues after an extraterrestrial race forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth finds a kindred spirit in a government agent exposed to their biotechnology.

Director: Neill Blomkamp | Stars: Sharlto Copley, David James, Jason Cope, Vanessa Haywood

Votes: 717,129 | Gross: $115.65M

District 9 was another amazing balance between entertainment and commentary. You start out seeing the aliens as absolutely repulsive, but by the end, to my pleasant surprise, I was empathizing more with these ugly creatures than I have with most humans in other movies.

9. Dogtooth (2009)

Not Rated | 97 min | Drama, Thriller

73 Metascore

A controlling, manipulative father locks his three adult offsprings in a state of perpetual childhood by keeping them prisoner within the sprawling family compound.

Director: Yorgos Lanthimos | Stars: Christos Stergioglou, Michele Valley, Angeliki Papoulia, Christos Passalis

Votes: 110,538 | Gross: $0.11M

It's a pretty odd movie and it gets you thinking about nature vs. nurture. While it doesn't quite take that conversation anywhere, it's worth watching simply for the shockingly distorted upbringing the children have.

10. Donnie Darko (2001)

R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

88 Metascore

After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.

Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne

Votes: 850,390 | Gross: $1.48M

Donnie Darko has a great tone and a great cast of characters. The discussions on time and space are interesting too. Patrick Swayze plays a role that's unique and odd considering his history, but he totally pulls it off.

11. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

R | 108 min | Drama, Romance, Sci-Fi

89 Metascore

When their relationship turns sour, a couple undergoes a medical procedure to have each other erased from their memories forever.

Director: Michel Gondry | Stars: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Gerry Robert Byrne

Votes: 1,078,526 | Gross: $34.40M

It's like quirky poetry with a beautiful and important surprisingly somber story at the center. It's a film that speaks to you much more when you look between the lines.

12. Fight Club (1999)

R | 139 min | Drama

67 Metascore

An insomniac office worker and a devil-may-care soap maker form an underground fight club that evolves into much more.

Director: David Fincher | Stars: Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Meat Loaf, Zach Grenier

Votes: 2,325,497 | Gross: $37.03M

Another one of my most favourite movies - as far as I'm concerned, Fight Club is a film that defines the 1990s. Fincher's hand on the film extends the satire of the story to a length that's just right. It becomes an amazing examination of nihilism complemented with an appropriately revolting mise en scène and a great story to wrap it all together.

13. Good Will Hunting (1997)

R | 126 min | Drama, Romance

71 Metascore

Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 1,068,902 | Gross: $138.43M

I love this movie for the relationship between the two leads. It's another film I watched when I was young and it made me believe that everyone, even a janitor, should be treated with respect and compassion.

14. Groundhog Day (1993)

PG | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

72 Metascore

A narcissistic, self-centered weatherman finds himself in a time loop on Groundhog Day.

Director: Harold Ramis | Stars: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, Stephen Tobolowsky

Votes: 685,381 | Gross: $70.91M

This film holds a special place in my mind because of my parents love for it. They would watch again and again, any time it was on tv and eventually they even bought a VHS of it. It became a weird meta installation throughout my childhood, the constant déjà vu of Bill Murray's character reflected in my own forced repeat viewing of this film.

15. Hard Candy (2005)

R | 104 min | Drama, Thriller

58 Metascore

Hayley's a smart, charming teenage girl. Jeff's a handsome, smooth fashion photographer. An Internet chat, a coffee shop meet-up, an impromptu fashion shoot back at Jeff's place. Jeff thinks it's his lucky night. He's in for a surprise.

Director: David Slade | Stars: Patrick Wilson, Elliot Page, Sandra Oh, Odessa Rae

Votes: 168,129 | Gross: $1.01M

Hard Candy is a shocking film with a brutal performance by Ellen Page. The stark cinematography and simple story have so many twists and turns that it's entertaining down to the final line. It's almost difficult to take repeat viewings but it's one of my big favourites.

16. I Am Sam (2001)

PG-13 | 132 min | Drama

28 Metascore

An intellectually disabled man fights for custody of his 7-year-old daughter and in the process teaches his cold-hearted lawyer the value of love and family.

Director: Jessie Nelson | Stars: Sean Penn, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dakota Fanning, Dianne Wiest

Votes: 155,337 | Gross: $40.31M

Sean Penn gave an unbelievable performance in this film and while it wasn't necessarily great cinema, it was a story that touched me. It stays true to itself and approaches everything with honesty.

17. I, Robot (2004)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Mystery, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

In 2035, a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.

Director: Alex Proyas | Stars: Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, Bruce Greenwood, Alan Tudyk

Votes: 575,684 | Gross: $144.80M

Probably the best robot movie in existence today. I, Robot is a succinct and exciting examination of Asimov's Laws. It makes the idea of a sentient machine really exiting and pulls off the 'pinocchio' story really well with Sonny, the lead robot.

18. In the Mood for Love (2000)

PG | 98 min | Drama, Romance

87 Metascore

Two neighbors form a strong bond after both suspect extramarital activities of their spouses. However, they agree to keep their bond platonic so as not to commit similar wrongs.
