1. The Impossible (2012)

PG-13 | 114 min | Drama, History, Thriller

73 Metascore

The story of a tourist family in Thailand caught in the destruction and chaotic aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

Director: J.A. Bayona | Stars: Naomi Watts, Ewan McGregor, Tom Holland, Oaklee Pendergast

Votes: 244,014 | Gross: $19.02M

Nice one about the disaster in India. I'm pretty sure that Hollywood took some liberties, but the drama of the family involved here was very touching. Evan MacGregor and Naomi Watts joined together again in a movie and I was glad they did, I remember to see them in Stay in 2005 and like it very much.

2. Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

PG | 101 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

72 Metascore

A video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.

Director: Rich Moore | Stars: John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Sarah Silverman

Votes: 458,311 | Gross: $189.42M

I have only one thing to say: BEST VIDEOGAME MOVIE EVER MADE, period!! Go watch it!

3. Life of Pi (2012)

Director: Ang Lee | Stars: Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain, Tabu

Votes: 666,727 | Gross: $124.99M

Brilliant!!! Just brilliant!! At the end I just wanted to applaud as loud as I could!! Oscar, keep an eye on that one!!

4. Jack Reacher (2012)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Mystery, Thriller

50 Metascore

A homicide investigator digs deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper responsible for a mass shooting.

Director: Christopher McQuarrie | Stars: Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog

Votes: 364,971 | Gross: $80.07M

Nice movie with Tom Cruise!! If you like police plots and private eye stories, then I strongly recommend this one!

5. The Last Stand (2013)

R | 107 min | Action, Thriller, Western

54 Metascore

The leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff.

Director: Jee-woon Kim | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Johnny Knoxville, Rodrigo Santoro

Votes: 145,324 | Gross: $12.05M

Arnold Schwarzenegger is back baby!! What can I say, after Expendables 2, this return of Arnold in the leading roles was just awesome!!! I'll certainly want to add this killer to my collection of Arnold flicks after the DVD came out!! A salute also to Rodrigo Santoro that did a heck of a job in the movie and made my country very proud!! If you're missing the old-fashioned 80's action heroes, then this is for you!!! The sheriff is back in town!!!

6. Amour (2012)

PG-13 | 127 min | Drama

95 Metascore

Georges and Anne are an octogenarian couple. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter, also a musician, lives in Britain with her family. One day, Anne has a stroke, and the couple's bond of love is severely tested.

Director: Michael Haneke | Stars: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert, Alexandre Tharaud

Votes: 105,675 | Gross: $6.74M

It's hard for me to even start drawing something in words. This movie shocks you, moves you and touches you all at the same time. It's love in it's purest form. As I watch, I see my grandma lying in her bed under the same conditions, and I cry hard, with the memory of that sweet and humble parent of mine that left me two years ago, it evokes on me a feeling of depression and heartbreak so strong that I feel like watching comedies the rest of the week to recover. This is not just a movie, it's an experience. I recommend it, but with caution. I watched on a Monday evening, don't do that! Try watching on a Friday or Saturday with some companion. Anyway, it's not an easy movie. It's an honest and sensible movie, but I don't feel like watching it again, I rather watch 2011 Intouchables all over again instead.

7. Django Unchained (2012)

R | 165 min | Drama, Western

81 Metascore

With the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington

Votes: 1,694,545 | Gross: $162.81M

Wow, what a western! I mean, really good! Don't get me wrong I'm still one of those that holds The Good, The Bad and The Ugly like THE ultimate western, for me no other western can be as good or better than Leone's masterpiece.

But Django Unchained definitely takes the cake like the best and most entertaining western of modern days. I've just watched the movie and I'm still overwhelmed by it! And you know what is the funny part? I'm not even a Tarantino fan! All I enjoyed from him until now was Pulp Fiction and Inglorious Bastards. Now Django just entered that list!

Highly recommended! Specially if you are, like me, a great fan of westerns!

8. Movie 43 (2013)

R | 94 min | Comedy

18 Metascore

A series of interconnected short films follows a washed-up producer as he pitches insane story lines featuring some of the biggest stars in Hollywood.

Directors: Elizabeth Banks, Steven Brill, Steve Carr, Rusty Cundieff, James Duffy, Griffin Dunne, Peter Farrelly, Patrik Forsberg, Will Graham, James Gunn, Brett Ratner, Jonathan van Tulleken, Bob Odenkirk | Stars: Emma Stone, Stephen Merchant, Richard Gere, Liev Schreiber

Votes: 112,290 | Gross: $8.83M

Geez! What have I just saw? This is bµllṩhit! Completely ridiculous and total nonsense! I don't believe it... Hugh Jackman in this movie?? How did they get Hugh Jackman for this?? And Richard Gere?? Halle Berry?? Naomi Watts... dear God, Naomi, how could you??

Seriously, this movie makes The Rocky Horror Picture Show looks like a normal picture, a sensible picture! What the fµ¢ƙ did the writers took to do this? Were they high or something?

I mean... seriously... a leprechaun? A guy with balls going down his chin?? Testicles? A woman who likes a dump? A homicidal animated cat? Where did you get this from?? What... who wrote this??? Really...???

Alas, some funny segments but lots and lots of bµllcrap surrounds the actual funny parts. Avoid it!

9. Flight (I) (2012)

R | 138 min | Drama, Thriller

76 Metascore

Troubling questions arise after airline pilot Whip Whitaker makes a miracle landing after a mid-air catastrophe.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Denzel Washington, Nadine Velazquez, Don Cheadle, John Goodman

Votes: 376,111 | Gross: $93.77M

Wow!! Just wow!! Robert Zemeckis, Alan Silvestri, Steve Starkey, all of them, I know somehow you know these fellas! Well, they finally return here with Denzel Washington in a live action movie, and it's... AWESOME!! Really, one of the best performances from Denzel that I've ever seen in the drama genre.

I'm serious! Great story, wonderful performances, you just can't miss that one! It made me laugh, it made me cry a little, it put me on the edge of my seat... it's sheer brilliance! I strongly recommend it!

10. Lincoln (2012)

PG-13 | 150 min | Biography, Drama, History

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Votes: 272,591 | Gross: $182.21M

Great inspirational movie! Spielberg hit the spot and gives Day-Lewis his well deserved Oscar! Go watch it!

11. A Good Day to Die Hard (2013)

R | 98 min | Action, Thriller

28 Metascore

John McClane travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack, only to discover that Jack is a CIA operative working undercover, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.

Director: John Moore | Stars: Bruce Willis, Jai Courtney, Sebastian Koch, Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Votes: 215,041 | Gross: $67.35M

I'm a long time Die Hard fan and I really think that the franchise will never go back to it's greatness from the original and classic trilogy. But at least I found, at first look, this movie a little better than Live Free or Die Hard. That's something. Now for the next one, guys, please, try to make a better one, because the clock is ticking, the age is... aging, I guess... and I still didn't see my friend John McClane the way he was in his prime, when he used to be ƒµckiɳ’ awesome, a little more human and trolling bad guys the way they deserved.

Yeah. Please, bring me back the "now I have a machine gun, hohoho" guy, I just love that guy! Still, nice action movie, but nothing really special. Oh yeah... thanks for not censoring the "Yippie-kai-yay ɱọțɦerƒµcker" this time! This isn't meant for kids, so please, back with the R ratings and leave your kids at home, goddammit!

And also, thanks for the Rolling Stones at the ending credits. Even if the movie was God-awful, Stones will always set things right!

12. Les Misérables (2012)

PG-13 | 158 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

63 Metascore

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.

Director: Tom Hooper | Stars: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried

Votes: 345,971 | Gross: $148.81M

Wonderful musical about the French Revolution! I never saw the Broadway version, but this movie adaptation of Victor Hugo's book really deserves credit! It's one of the best musicals I've seen in recent years since Sweeney Todd! Must watch!

13. The Croods (2013)

PG | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

55 Metascore

After their cave is destroyed, a caveman family must trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world with the help of an inventive boy.

Directors: Kirk DeMicco, Chris Sanders | Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener

Votes: 231,950 | Gross: $187.17M

Believe me, I was almost choosing Broken City to see instead of this! Glad I changed in the last minute! This is Pixar level, highly entertaining, pleasing, funny, touching, beautiful! Beautiful to see the visuals and the emotive story! Worth every cent!

14. Bullet to the Head (2012)

R | 92 min | Action, Crime, Thriller

48 Metascore

After watching their respective partners die, a New Orleans hitman and a Washington, D.C. detective form an alliance in order to bring down their common enemy.

Director: Walter Hill | Stars: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Momoa, Christian Slater, Sung Kang

Votes: 52,432 | Gross: $9.48M

Well Sly, dude, it's been a long time that you was this good on a movie! Nice! It has action, humor, it has sex and gore, everything that you would expect from a great example of the action alpha male hero!! This one delivers!! Plus, it shows us great pictures from a younger Sly, and there you can look and remember "oh, look, it's Rambo!! Oh, there, it's Cobra!"

I'm really satisfied and glad that I saw it! Great one, Sly! Looking forward for your teaming up with Arnold next!! Oh yeah, one more thing: don't forget Jason Momoa on The Expendables 3!! Imagine how awesome it would be!

15. Oblivion (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

54 Metascore

A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.

Director: Joseph Kosinski | Stars: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko

Votes: 553,028 | Gross: $89.02M

Jesus, what a hack: take the Wall-E plot made poorly, put a mix of The Dark Knight and Inception from Christopher Nolan as a soundtrack, with tiny bits of special sound effects from 2001 A Space Odyssey, steal concepts like Hal-9000 and the Monolith from 2001 again, Michael Bay it all the way (or you can also say, add some excrement to the mix) with famous actors like Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman to give it some credibility, render it all with astonishing special effects with unoriginal concepts and you have... Oblivion!

Seriously... not recommended!

16. My Sweet Orange Tree (2012)

99 min | Drama, Family

My Sweet Orange Tree begins with José Mauro de Vasconcelos (Caco Ciocler) receiving an edition of his finished novel. Then, the film starts to tell the story from the writer's memories, ... See full summary »

Director: Marcos Bernstein | Stars: João Guilherme, José de Abreu, Caco Ciocler, Eduardo Dascar

Votes: 1,466

This was a great experience! Brazilian writer José Mauro de Vasconcelos that wrote the 1968 classic is treated with respect and earns a beautiful and thoughtful experience in film. One of the greatest Brazilian movies that I ever saw. Worth checking out!

17. Iron Man Three (2013)

PG-13 | 130 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

62 Metascore

When Tony Stark's world is torn apart by a formidable terrorist called the Mandarin, he starts an odyssey of rebuilding and retribution.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle

Votes: 899,040 | Gross: $409.01M

Well, I finally saw Iron Man 3, the first big comic book superhero movie of the year. And how was it? Lisa Simpson feelings... Meh... Is it so bad? Well, no, definitely no. It was inconsistent. But I had some fun. It's like Superman III, unimpressive yet harmless. So my hopes of a real epic and impressive superhero movie this year still rests on Man of Steel's arms. It's up to Thor The Dark World now to save Marvel of an unimpressive year.

18. Camille Claudel 1915 (2013)

Not Rated | 95 min | Biography, Drama

65 Metascore

Winter, 1915. Confined by her family to an asylum in the South of France - where she will never sculpt again - the chronicle of Camille Claudel's reclusive life, as she waits for a visit from her brother, Paul Claudel.

Director: Bruno Dumont | Stars: Juliette Binoche, Jessica Errero, Robert Leroy, Jean-Luc Vincent

Votes: 3,936 | Gross: $0.02M

Well, that was a very uneasy experience for me. This story based on true facts brings the subject about freewill versus dogmas. It's a reflexive french flick that brings the discussion about wether religion affects art and creativity or not. What if you live an empty life trapped on a mental institution that will never let you create new things again? How about if dogmatic people cut your free will away and send it to the deepest circle of hell, trying to fill your mind every single day with dogmas and the way you should behave. What if you can't take that sorry little life anymore and are eager to escape, to create and think for yourself again, but they won't let you, and for that will to create and think for yourself they'll call you a crazy deranged person?

Sad, heh? The movie doesn't try to answer any question nor try to take sides, it only raises those questions. My position? As religious as you can be, nothing will ever replace your freedom of even deny the existence of God if you will. Not that I would do that, 'cause I have my beliefs myself, but there's no replacement for free will, no matter who you are or what do you believe.

Juliette Binoche's performance is strong and heartbreaking. Cinematography is wonderful and the slow pace of the movie gives you room to reflect about the matters exposed in it in a very contemplative way. Recommended.

19. A Royal Affair (2012)

R | 137 min | Biography, Drama, History

73 Metascore

A young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician - and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever.

Director: Nikolaj Arcel | Stars: Alicia Vikander, Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Trine Dyrholm

Votes: 50,861 | Gross: $1.55M

One of the best European movies I saw in recent days. Based on true facts, it tells the story of a XVIII century decoy king who has a beautiful queen. But this queen is seduced by the king's german doctor. Now one of the main points of this german doctor is that he tries to bring his Enlightenment ideas to the Denmark kingdom. The plot is interesting, the story of adultery builds up the plot and the acting is just superb! Mads Mikkelsen couldn't shine propertly as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, but here I think he flows his talents wonderfully. The other main protagonists are equally great, production values, excellent, I think this film holds huge chances to win an Oscar next year! Recommended!

20. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

PG-13 | 132 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

72 Metascore

After the crew of the Enterprise find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction.

Director: J.J. Abrams | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch

Votes: 497,039 | Gross: $228.78M

Evening, commanders of the IMDB star fleet! I'm just logging in to let everyone know as I still acknowledge myself in astonishment that Into Darkness is the most daring, the most bold, the most well crafted and well developed, one of the best things that I had the pleasure to witness in the Star Trek franchise, particularly the movie series, since their second endeavor, The Wrath of Kahn! I'm totally not joking and I'm totally not spoiling the details for you, as you'll have a bunch of great surprises to check, so don't waste any time and check it right now! Live long and prosper! That is all. Logging out.

21. The Hangover Part III (2013)

R | 100 min | Comedy, Crime

30 Metascore

When one of their own is kidnapped by an angry gangster, the Wolf Pack must track down Mr. Chow, who has escaped from prison and is on the run.

Director: Todd Phillips | Stars: Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha

Votes: 335,319 | Gross: $112.20M

Sorry guys! Unfunny! For more details, see my review, but to be short: it tries to be something it's not and after the credits it remembers what it should have been. That's it. Disappointing.

22. Monsters University (2013)

G | 104 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

65 Metascore

A look at the relationship between Mike Wazowski and James P. "Sully" Sullivan during their days at Monsters University, when they weren't necessarily the best of friends.

Director: Dan Scanlon | Stars: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren

Votes: 389,885 | Gross: $268.49M

Great prequel to the 2001 movie. It took even longer for Pixar to make some other Monsters related stuff than Toy Story and Cars, but it was worth every cent of the admission! The story is strong, the new characters likable, it's a well worth checking out movie for both kids and adults! Looks like Pixar learned from their mistakes in Cars 2. Go watch it! Oh, and the opening animation, The Blue Umbrella, lovely! Well done again, Pixar!

23. My Mom Is a Character (2013)

84 min | Comedy

After another spat with her kids, Dona Hermínia decides to take some time off from them and hides away in her aunt's house, where she reminisces about her kids in an age when they still needed her.

Director: André Pellenz | Stars: Paulo Gustavo, Rodrigo Pandolfo, Mariana Xavier, Alexandra Richter

Votes: 5,824

It's been a while since I last saw a Brazilian comedy. The fact is that most of comedies in my country just don't add up, they are just generic Globo TV "quality" formulas that are simply awful!! By word of mouth I decided to ignore my skepticism, take a deep breath and check this one out, and guess what? I had fun! I mean... I didn't watch the most brilliant comedy of my life, and it's still pretty generic, but it was better than most comedies that comes out in Brazil! There are flaws, and situations that just makes you cringe, but in general terms, I laughed, I had a good time with it.

It's the kind of movie that illustrates the everyday problematic Brazilian family, there are stereotypes of Brazilian people in every direction you look at. So yeah, that's why I let that one pass. I could easily identify some very regular situations that I already seen around in my city with other families and I have to admit, the characters were mostly very likable, specially the mother! So yeah, it's a nice Brazilian comedy. Again, you won't have the laugher of your life, but you'll still have a good time with your friends and relatives.

24. The Great Gatsby (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Drama, Romance

55 Metascore

A writer and wall street trader, Nick Carraway, finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his mysterious millionaire neighbor, Jay Gatsby, amid the riotous parties of the Jazz Age.

Director: Baz Luhrmann | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire

Votes: 596,722 | Gross: $144.84M

Wow!! When I saw that it was a movie from the director of Moulin Rouge, I got myself wondering... "well, that means that the movie will have mesmerizing visuals to compensate for the weak plot, right?" WRONG! I never read the book neither saw the 1970's version, but this one nailed it! Great direction work, strong and intriguing script and beautiful cinematography with a great score makes this one a must watch!

25. Neighboring Sounds (2012)

Unrated | 131 min | Drama, Thriller

77 Metascore

The lives of the residents of a Brazilian apartment building and the security guards who get the job guarding the surrounding streets.

Director: Kleber Mendonça Filho | Stars: Ana Rita Gurgel, Caio Almeida, Maeve Jinkings, Dida Maia

Votes: 8,748 | Gross: $0.03M

Wow!! What an experience! Finally, something different in Brazilian cinema. Emulating something from filmmakers like John Carpenter and Terence Malick with bits of his own, Mendonça made a contemplative and powerful movie that shows us that, even the bad situations can't make people give up from their lives because they'll always try to make the best of what they got.

Fantastic cinematography with shots from everyday situations made in a very disturbing and oppressive fashion. The main objective of Mendonça here is to take the everyday life of people and make it more interesting. This is a wonderful and thoughtful experience that worth every cent! I saw it and got myself trying to solve the puzzle while having some thought about my own life.

A wonderful piece of Brazilian cinema with a slow, yet great development and interesting situations. Must watch!

26. World War Z (2013)

PG-13 | 116 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

63 Metascore

Former United Nations employee Gerry Lane traverses the world in a race against time to stop a zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatens to destroy humanity itself.

Director: Marc Forster | Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale

Votes: 719,229 | Gross: $202.36M

Beginning of second semester. ----

It kind of surprises me the fact that Brad Pitt is in this kind of popcorn pleasing summer blockbuster movie. Generally he's into something more challenging for his acting skills. Generic zombie movie; apocalypse... check; people infected with some kind of toxin or disease... check; hero who finds out how to solve the situation before the government... check; people in panic, screaming for their lives as they are attacked by the ones who got the infection... check; and last, but not least, promises of a sequel in the end... CHECK! The only difference from the rest of the zombie movies around? It's a PG-13 zombie movie... yeah, you got it, less bites, less blood and more action. Pretty generic. If you want some kind of escapism for your weekend, go watch it, but don't expect anything new.

27. Now You See Me (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 115 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

50 Metascore

An FBI agent and an Interpol detective track a team of illusionists who pull off bank heists during their performances, and reward their audiences with the money.

Director: Louis Leterrier | Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Common, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson

Votes: 708,210 | Gross: $117.72M

"That was a great concert!" Those were my thoughts when I was walking out of the movie theater. Long story short: it's a heist movie with magic as a background turned into a huge visual attraction, almost glamorizing burglars. It's not something new, you probably saw this a thousand times before with movies like The Prestige or Ocean's Eleven, in fact, this movie not only takes a lot of the concepts from The Prestige by Christopher Nolan and being two steps ahead being the smartest guy in the room in Ocean's Eleven and mix them to work together with great visual and art concepts that would make a director like Baz Luhrmann applaud as loud as he can but also elevates these concepts to the heights, putting into practice everything we saw in the famous Christopher Nolan movie. So, there's nothing really new here, but it's well made, well orchestrated, gives you tons of fun and a thousand twists, I mean, holy moly, this movie has more turns and endings than Return of the King, when you think you had it figured out, it just fools you once again! Anyway, it's a nice spectacle, worth the admission ticket, go watch it! And also has great actors like Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson and others. I've just saw it and I enjoyed the ride, so yeah, it's worth of your attention. Just take care and don't play the fool in front of your friends thinking you know what the twist is gonna be. Pay attention to the details and don't look so close.

28. Man of Steel (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 811,740 | Gross: $291.05M

Finally I saw the new Superman movie! Wow! Just wow! Yes, it's different from the Chris Reeve movies, yes, it's an updated Superman, yes, I know! But it's awesome in it's own terms! And don't get me wrong, I still love the Reeve 1978 movie more, but this one is also beautiful, there's no question! Snyder, Nolan and Goyer made a Superman movie for the modern world and their vision couldn't be more adequate and exciting. DC, you have a great offer this year! We'll still see the other comic book movies of the year, we still have The Wolverine and Thor - The Dark World until December, but honestly, I think that it's not even necessary to see them! To me, it's more than clear that this year belongs to Superman. And in case you're asking, yes, this one has all the action and chaos that Superman Returns didn't! It's good, it's exciting, it's a wonderful start on a very promising story to be developed (undoubtedly) in other sequels and I loved it! Highly recommended!

29. Despicable Me 2 (2013)

PG | 98 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

62 Metascore

When Gru, the world's most super-bad turned super-dad has been recruited by a team of officials to stop lethal muscle and a host of Gru's own, he has to fight back with new gadgetry, cars, and more minion madness.

Directors: Pierre Coffin, Chris Renaud | Stars: Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Benjamin Bratt, Miranda Cosgrove

Votes: 425,958 | Gross: $368.06M

Sorry, not what I was expecting. The first movie was good, but this sequel... unnecessary, to say the least. A disappointment. It has something, but mostly it's an animation aimed for 5 year olds, cliched to death, nothing really interesting or compelling. Sorry guys, not Pixar level. I know it's not from Pixar, but they are today a very high standart to compare other animations, they really raised the bar that high on the genre. Anyway, take your kid if you want to, but if you're going alone, you'll probably get bored by it.

30. The Lone Ranger (2013)

PG-13 | 150 min | Action, Adventure, Western

37 Metascore

Native American warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice.

Director: Gore Verbinski | Stars: Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson

Votes: 244,454 | Gross: $89.30M

Typical Hollywood adventure formula for a movie. Take Pirates of the Caribbean and turn it to a western. That's it. When I first heard that the critics were bashing this movie and naming it as the John Carter of 2013, I got curious. Fortunately, I didn't listen to them and enjoyed jolly good fun with Johnny Depp, William Fichner, Tom Wilkinson and Helena Bonham Carter. If you have the chance, don't miss it. It won't change your life and it won't offer you nothing that you've ever seen before, but it's a very efficient movie in the arts of entertainment, like a good theme park.

I just saw this one on a special exhibition here in my town. Thought I lost this one on the first semester, but thanks to a movie theater here that actually cares to exhibit movies more reminiscent of the cultural circles, and not only the traditional junk food and summer blockbusters, I could check this one out. At first, I was staggered by the very presence of one actress... Keira Knightley?? The annoying love affair of the equally annoying Orlando Bloom from Pirates of the Caribbean? That just can't be! But then I thought about Natalie Portman doing the Star Wars prequels and the difference of her when she was in Black Swan and I realized... gee... she looks like a complete different actress here! I mean, a good one! Wow! I was impressed! Actors like Jude Law and Ruth Wilson and all the cast was equally good. I never read the Tolstoi book before, but I'm a little familiar with the story. I don't know if this take on the adultery and guilt treaty of Tolstoy is the best or if the other renditions have a better treatment, but it was a very nice and well produced movie, worth the price of admission.

Well, and here we go for another Jackman movie, playing Wolvie. As I just vouched before, no other Superhero movie this year will beat Man of Steel in my opinion, and honestly, I feel I don't even have to see Thor - The Dark World to get to that conclusion. Having said that, surprise... this Wolverine offer is far, far superior than the disastrous X-Men Origins - Wolverine!! Yes, and it gets better! They made like Origins never happened, it's totally erased from the cinema chronology! That's great and very uplifting! This new Wolvie is gory, dark, and really brutal, in fact, gorier than I imagined! James Mangold hits the target here with a compelling, yet problematic at times, story that takes the X-Men Trilogy's story further and prepare to connect every universe, The Trilogy universe, Wolvie's universe and First Class universe. And that'll happen next year with Days of Future Past, so stay tuned! There's a nice surprise at the end of the projection, so stay after the credits, as Marvel movies takes forward their crazy idea of connected universes. Still, as a stand alone offer, except the after credits scene, of course, this movie delivers! Go watch it!

I didn't watch the first one when it came out. And I didn't know that this was a comic book either, I never heard about this comic before and I grew up reading DC Comics characters. As I saw the second movie coming this month, I decided to watch the first one on Netflix and I enjoyed! Saw the second one now on theaters and enjoyed even more. I just missed Karl Urban in this second one, but in general, it was pretty entertaining, from the point of view of someone who watched a movie alone, and not an adaptation. Even though, it looks like DC is getting it's paws flying to intimidate Marvel, and that's good! Now we only have Marvel's Thor 2 in the end of the year to check out from the comic book movies of 2013, and I hope it to be good also.

Well, nothing much to add on this one, really. Good homage to the monsters x robots productions, specially the Japanese ones, nice brainless fun, good effects, and that's it, nothing new. Have you seen Independence Day before? If you did, and I know you did, well, it's this movie. Take the aliens, replace them with giant monsters, take the american air force and replace it with giant robots came from the Japanese tokusatsus and that's it, Pacific Rim. I'm sorry if I'm sounding a little disappointed, but coming from Del Toro, I was expecting something more, other than the generic summer blockbuster flick, I mean, I knew I would get that, but I had hope that it would have something different also. Anyway, if you have nothing better to see and want to shut down your brain for two hours with reckless destruction and monster carnage all enraptured in a nice and shiny package of visual effects, have this movie, then. Otherwise, read a book.

Votes: 103,851 | Gross: $16.13M

Nice as cinebiographies go, just a little over the top on the "heroic themes" that always make the real persons look more larger than life than what they really are. But nice, nevertheless. The movie has its problems, of course, I'm not saying that it's perfect. But what really called my attention was Kutcher's performance as Jobs, proving once more that the average overpaid actor that nobody gives two cents can really shine when properly directed, which is the case here. So two thumbs up for Kutcher's performance, you can see that he really had put his heart and soul into this.

Overall, great buddy movie. I mean, nothing that you never saw before in Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, the Lethal Weapon movie series, Tango & Cash, etc, etc, but it's pretty decent, Denzel Washington is amazing as always, Mark Wahlberg does a decent job, the villain is funny, the acting is good, I don't know the director, but considering this one movie, he must be decent, I'm willing to take a look at his body of work, but let's see from now on. So that's it, nothing new, but pretty good and I had lots of fun, definitely worth checking!

This movie punches people in the stomach when its resolution is presented to everybody. Pitty that it drags too much without reason. And one more thing one of the reporters say that everybody has the will of luxury. Me...? Well, let's just say that I rather spend my hard earned money with books, films, music, concerts, plays, you know, things that will bring me something positive, culture, a better understanding about the world I live in, you know, things that fast and expensive cars, clothes and self-indulgence never will. Of course, I'm not saying that I wouldn't have a really nice car if I could or maybe a yacht, or something else, that would be really hypocritical from me not saying that I wish to be rich someday though, but other than spend money only with vanity, I'm willing to spare my doubloons in order to get enough money to really make the difference to people, not the Nicki "make the difference" kind, not craving for vanity, but really promote some change in people's minds. All in all, not the best movie from Sofia Coppola, far from it, but still brings some thought to the table.

It's very hard for a movie to get a perfect 10/10 from me. Well, after a very weak season of Hollywood movies, I decided to take a look at this one that was screening in one of the theaters of my town, as part of the independent foreign circuit. And it was mesmerizing! The photography is simply amazing, portraying the agonizing situation of the main protagonist that goes on a road trip. As the very visual story progresses you see the pain that each character is going through, you witness the horrors of those bellic conflicts from the 1942 USSR in a slow-paced agonizing and self-contained fashion. It's a mesmerizing and visually stunning experience, thought-provoking and very elegant that you just can't miss.

Well, where do I start... Pixar learned with Cars 2; Disney didn't. They will continue milking this cow for what it's worth. Too bad, because we got a lousy remake of Cars but with airplanes. the movie is just a little bit better than Cars 2 but fails in originality. What will be next? Bikes? Submarines? Helicopters? How do the machines born in that world? I don't think I care. Well, I'm done with the Cars franchise. Hoping for the next Pixar movie will be much better than feeding the Disney franchise machine. And I must add that children in the theater I went weren't that excited with the movie. That's it, case closed. Move on, Disney, move on and leave this franchise alone.

This film is decent. That's it. Decent. Adequate at best. Nothing that you never seen before, but... yeah, well, I gotta say it, the acting is great, though, Matt Damon, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, Jodie Foster, Sharlton Copley, William Fichner, they are all pretty amazing actors and they surely deserve your attention for this film. As to the rest... it lacks emotion sometimes, all pretty rushed, action packed, no time to stop and have some thinking, though it has some food for thought, but as I said, nothing new. The soundtrack is pretty generic too. All in all, a good popcorn movie, but definitely, not a keeper.

God, I don't even know where to begin... this is simply one of the best space dramas I've ever seen in my life! The script, amazing, the photography, breathtaking, the concepts, mesmerizing!!

It's an experience best taken if you sit down and pay all the attention you can. Don't go to this movie eating popcorn, it's distracting! I did eat something just before I enter the theater and I'm glad I did! Believe me, this movie is enough food for thought alone, and it's just amazing! Suspenseful, tense and at times reflexive, thoughtful.

Sandra Bullock is an astronaut that has her team injured during a mission on the Hubble satellite. With 10% of oxygen in her space suit she's saved by Clooney's character and gets to the space station safely and there she has to face some difficulties. Through her personal journey we come to know her past and her struggle to overcome the difficult path to personal growth.

And when we finally get in contact with her past and her inner ghosts until the moment of the final climax, the catharsis in the end of the movie goes deeper and I just can't avoid not to give a standing ovation to the final outcome!

I can't recommend this movie enough!! Go see it!! Feel it, experience it!

Director Alfonso Cuarón excels himself and crafts his crowning achievement with this one! Well done!! I went over the final credits with a heavy chin, wondering how to talk, how to debate. If you like Science-Fiction and Space Movies, then this movie is for you! Don't miss it!!

UPDATE: saw it again, right after Escape Plan, couldn't resist. The only movie in 2013 that I just went back for more. This is sheer brilliance! And my grade is still 10. No doubt, the best movie of 2013.

Wow!! I'm really impressed! I just left the theater and I'm still laughing!! Geez, it's been a long time since I laughed this hard with a Brazilian comedy! This is really good! OK, OK, there's nothing sooooo new here, it's basically Ted's plot, yeah, I'm completely aware of it. An immature fella, living with his oddball friend left his relationship with a girl after they spend two years together with an animal. Plus, the animal is the reason for their reapproach lately and when the main protagonist loses it, hell breaks loose. Sound's like Ted, right? Even the very poster from the movie has some resemblance with it. But the gags are really different from Ted and great too, it takes a complete different direction from the McFarlane movie. The actors are great, three of them in the movie, work or worked in the Brazilian edition of the very popular TV show CQC, so it has a real proximity with it's audience and the idea of a narcoleptic dog just amuses me, making the whole experience really funny! The story is great, funny as hell, the direction is good, this is simply the best Brazilian comedy of the year, I don't know if it's the best comedy of the year, it could really be, but narrowing it only for Brazil, which is the targeted audience, it's truly the top comedy of 2013!! I guess even if you're not a Brazilian guy you can enjoy it, understand most of the gags and have great fun with it! Of course, it's not flawless, specially being a comedy, but... seriously, must watch!! It's that funny! Where The Hangover Part III failed with me this year, Mato Sem Cachorro scored big time!

Badass!! This is all I have to say! Think about Alcatrazz with Clint Eastwood meeting Commando and Cobra. Great and ballsy combination, right? But wait, it gets better! The soundtrack is so Commando!! The claustrophobic scenery is just scary and makes things even more suspenseful. The action is terrific, it's a fine example of old school action alpha male kickassery!! Sly and Arnie have great chemistry together, and Jim Caviziel playing the merciless prison warden is just awesome! Needless to say this is something you can't even think about missing! If you love old school action, go watch it right now! Great job guys!!

Lame. I don't know if it was me that was having a bad day, but this completely blew for me. Started promising, then suddenly it was more like a comedy show. In the end I couldn't care less for all the characters, and that upsets me because I kinda got hooked by the first movie, it wasn't that much of a good one, but decent, enjoyed The Avengers like a summer fun, but this one... tsc, tsc. Looks like Marvel Studios is losing it. Bottom line, Man of Steel still holds the title of 2013 best superhero movie.

Captain Phillips, who just got kidnapped by a gang of Somalian guys tries to get himself loose in 2009 with the help of the US Marines. Beautifully shot, tense and interesting, the movie keeps you hooked all the time and Tom Hanks is brilliant here, as always, and the same goes to the rest of the cast. I don't know how much of the real story was fictionalized, but overall, looks real and it's a nice dramatization. Must watch!

OK, this was interesting, it keeps you hooked, but it feels tiresome at times! I'm sorry, but when you invest into suspense in a kidnapping picture, you have to get closure for the things you opened. Alex, the guy that was burning in the steam shower didn't have his closure in the movie. And for Hugh's character... they just left the ending opened in ambiguity. We don't know if they ever found him or if he died there. But again, I think the intention is just that, so, I'll let that pass... barely. This movie is waaay long, it drags itself too damn much. I understand the effort of the makers in doing a legitimate suspense, and it feels legitimate, of course, but guys, you have to let the suspense go in certain times, not hold it for so long and certainly, not also dragging it to no end. Otherwise, good, athmosferic movie, nice plot but has some problems, and as I said, it's unnecessarily long.

What a movie I just saw!! Seriously, it's just an amazing and hypnotic experience! This movie was shot in 1993, mind you! All you see on screen was shot in that year. You can notice that Jonathan Pryce's hair is less gray than it really is today. Also, you got in the movie the strong and mesmerizing presence of the late River Phoenix, coming in a time capsule directly to the future to give us his mesmerizing swan song. Wow... freakin' wow! Great acting, a script that shines and beautiful backgrounds are the main attractions here. The story is told in the form of a road movie and the characters all goes through changes in their lives. The most powerful thing in the movie is its heart and soul. This is the engine that moves the narrative. As for it's body, it's unfortunately broken, for the lack of a better comparison. As the director George Sluizer states before the movie starts, this movie will always be like a three feet chair. It's slightly unbalanced, it misses something but with care, still stands on it's feet. With River Phoenix's death before the shooting process finishes, the director summarizes the missing fragments of the movie to us in order to complete the narrative. It works fine that way. In spirit, in heart and soul, this movie deserves a straight 10/10. With its broken, unfinished body, it takes a 8/10. If only they could finish it in time... but that from now on, until the end of times will only belong to our imagination, trying to figure out what it could have been. For what it is, it perfectly stands on it's feet. Must watch! Once again, thanks to the "37º Festival Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo" in my city by the SESC institution of culture and development, I could enjoy another amazing flick!

It's a journey about finding again meaning in simple things and reinvent yourself. Wonderful movie! A message of encouragement that you can't avoid to take.

Well, you know what they say about most of old actors (except for Clint Eastwood, of course)... they just can't beat their peak era. You just see great, amazing old actors in this one like Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline and freakin' Robert De Niro, you start thinking about Basic Instinct, Wall Street, Shawnshank Redemption, The Alex Cross films, Unforgiven, Seven, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Silverado, Chaplin, Raging Bull, Godfather 2, Heat, and other great films that those actors did and what do you have? A bachelor party in Las Vegas Hangover style... are you kidding me? Well... This is a reflexive movie. Probably, it's not for everyone out there. It's one of the most slow paced movies I've ever seen. There are scenes that have a load of anguish and desperation that I never experienced in any other movie recently. This movie makes you stop for a moment and meditate about your very everyday life. The only "friendly" scene in the entire movie is when the kids start to pick up names for the piece of cabbage they have. There are scenes that seemed to take forever and you're invited to come along and enjoy the dark tranquility. Paradoxically, it causes you a feeling of discomfort because we don't really know if we are really relaxed with everything. Sometimes, silence and tranquility can be deceiving.

This movie came to remind us about our loss of serenity in our very everyday lives. It tests you to the point of you feeling unconfortable before the long, looong, loooooooooong takes. It's not only just a movie, it's a deep experience within our own selves, our sanity, our capacity of taking a seat, stop for a moment and look beyond the environment that surrounds us, for us to enjoy the little simpler things, to ignore the noise, the problems and everything, stop going so fast and face the view, the silence and face our own existence, our moments, to make our peace with our own time again.

And I really hope that I can do this again at some moment in my life. Because life is going in such a hurry and such a speed that we kinda lost track of ourselves. So it's a worthy and rewarding experience. Once again, and this time at last, because it was the last movie, I thank the SESC's "37º Festival Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo" event for an appropriate and decent closure and for another great film.

What a great follow-up to the first film of 2012! Really great! One of the things that attracted me to this story was the 1984 political commentary. Also, the thing about everything being so beautiful that it tends to allure and fool you is also a great feat! This, along with the Hobbit, of course, is probably the only movie series these days that I really give a damn. Can't wait to watch the conclusion!

Well done! I had lots of fun during the movie! Not only the jokes were funny as hell but the reactions of common people in the movie were most amusing! Check out this one and have fun beyond belief!

Nice debut by Gordon-Levitt as a director, tackling on many subjects about relationships and about how people are superficial and hollow. If you insist on looking for the perfect man or woman, whoever you are, you'll end up alone. It has a social commentary that fits perfectly for people from our modern world. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Great follow up to the first prelude to the LOTR trilogy. A little dragged out maybe and there's a lot of things you'll probably not reading in the book, but the plot with this expansion in the story got well made. I only missed Gollum in this one. The dragon Smaug got a very intimidating look and seemed very threatening, a wonderful work here by the special effects crew and the voice talent of the dragon. Now it'll be like an eternity until next year to the final conclusion of this trilogy. Can't wait! My only complain is that it got a lot of darkness with the 3D glasses, and believe me, it was another waste of the 3D technology, you'll have a better time watching the 2D version. Anyway, good follow up and so I'm waiting December 2014 for the conclusion. Just hope it's not like Return of the King and its thousand endings!

58. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

What a great movie, really amusing! I never saw the 1947 version, but I intent to do it soon. Wow, I don't know what to say... I caught myself saying... you know, that's what happens when you face yourself into one of the many crossroads of life. And I really identify with the main character, because I caught myself countless times saying, "you know, I should've done this to happen that, but I did that which caused to happen these", and so on... sometimes you really feel lost in life, and daydreaming is kind of a escape valve for us to reflect about ourselves and our own choices in life. Great movie, I dare to say the best one of the entire Ben Stiller career, great fun, amazing characters!! Can't miss it!
