1. Pulp Fiction (1994)

R | 154 min | Crime, Drama

95 Metascore

The lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis

Votes: 2,219,994 | Gross: $107.93M

Why it's my favorite movie:

1) Samuel L. Jackson's brilliant and hilarious performance

2) The dialogue is unlike anything I've ever heard in a movie and is the definition of hilarious. I've never had a movie make me laugh and feel kind of bad that I was laughing at it. The dialogue isn't there to advance the plot and some of it isn't even needed at all, but it's a character driven movie. So whether or not we like the main characters or not, we feel for them in some one way or another

3)The plot is full of so many clever twists and turns and it all ties up so well. This produces a great, coherent, and unique ending, something very few movies are able to accomplish today

4) How the story is out of order, and the ending is actually the beginning. This makes such an impact on the viewer because what Jules is saying at the end is so much more significant considering that we know what is going to happen afterwards.

5) It is the most influential movie of the 90's and maybe of all time. Though there have been many attempts, there has not been a movie in the same genre as Pulp Fiction better than Pulp Fiction since it came out in 1994.

6) Marvin, The Wolfe, Jimmy, Dead N storage, Adrenaline shots, Gold Watches, Christopher Walken.

Like one critic said (the great Roger Ebert), great movies have a few great scenes, but Pulp Fiction has more great scenes than bad ones.

2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

R | 142 min | Drama

82 Metascore

Over the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.

Director: Frank Darabont | Stars: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Bob Gunton, William Sadler

Votes: 2,888,517 | Gross: $28.34M

Reasons I love this movie:

1) Morgan Freeman's voice.

2) Definitely the most inspirational movie I've ever seen. Even a man in prison, probably the worst place you could be, still has reasons to be hopeful. Just shows how important friendship can be.

3) The ending is absolutely beautiful. And I definitely cried the first time I saw it.

4) Brooks (and his crow). His story was extremely depressing, but it made for a great contrast with Red's transformation.

3. Goodfellas (1990)

R | 145 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

92 Metascore

The story of Henry Hill and his life in the mafia, covering his relationship with his wife Karen and his mob partners Jimmy Conway and Tommy DeVito.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco

Votes: 1,257,233 | Gross: $46.84M

Reasons I love this movie:

1) Joe Pesci is absolutely insane and the standout to me. The rest of the cast is great as well, especially Liotta, but De Niro, Bracco, and Sorvino are excellent as well. I think De Niro's performance is somewhat overrated, whereas Liotta's is very underrated. So probably not Deniro's best role, but there's too many to compare it to.

2) One of the most realistic portrayals of the mob and the consequences of their actions. So many scenes are oozing with such style and finesse that it's hard to ignore. The violence is just incredibly real as well.

3) How well Scorsese is able to cover so many decades of life in the mob and pace it so beautifully. Few movies have conveyed the life of someone from a kid up until he "retires" basically. Scorese is a genius and this is his masterpiece (Along with Raging Bull maybe).

4) The amazing soundtrack

4. Fargo (1996)

R | 98 min | Crime, Thriller

88 Metascore

Minnesota car salesman Jerry Lundegaard's inept crime falls apart due to his and his henchmen's bungling and the persistent police work of the quite pregnant Marge Gunderson.

Directors: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen | Stars: William H. Macy, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare

Votes: 726,618 | Gross: $24.61M

Reasons I love this movie:

1) Frances McDormand's accent: "He's fleein the interview!". Also, William H. Macy is exceptional. Steve Buscemi is excellent and hilarious and Peter Stormare is great. Harve Presnell is very good too. Really a movie of Shakespearean proportions.

2) How well it contrasts between the evil and good in the world. And how making bad choices can spiral things out of control.

3) The Coen's are geniuses and know how to fit morality into their movies, usually ending their movies showing the good people in the story, even if they aren't the protagonist, and how they are affected.

5. Reservoir Dogs (1992)

R | 99 min | Crime, Thriller

81 Metascore

When a simple jewelry heist goes horribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.

Director: Quentin Tarantino | Stars: Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn

Votes: 1,088,138 | Gross: $2.83M

Reasons I love this movie:

1) By far Tarantino's best movie if he had never made Pulp Fiction. It may be put in the shadow a bit, but it's impressive Tarantino could make this and then make an even better movie after it. And that's saying something when that movie is Pulp Fiction. Because Pulp Fiction is better, but not by much.

2) Well what can I say, the violence is absolutely graphic and realistic, but I've never seen anything like it.

3) Instead of focusing on the robbery itself (like the whole entire movie "Ocean's Eleven"), we get to see the realistic aftermath of a botched robbery.

4) I must say also, Steve Buscemi is just fantastic. Harvey Keitel is great. Tim Roth and Chris Penn are very good. Michael Madsen and the rest round out the cast nicely as well.

6. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

R | 169 min | Drama, War

91 Metascore

Following the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns

Votes: 1,496,359 | Gross: $216.54M

Greatest war movie there is except maybe Schindler's list if you consider that a war movie. The sequence at the beginning is one of the best shot and choreographed scenes probably in film history. Though the movie does take awhile to get to where it wants to go, the build up is perfect and the payoff is even better.

7. Donnie Darko (2001)

R | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

88 Metascore

After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, a troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes.

Director: Richard Kelly | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne

Votes: 850,018 | Gross: $1.48M

Pretty trippy movie but one of my favorites. Really unique with it's take on time travel and a great satire of American high schools and society. The movie also hits you with many ranges of emotions as it manages to be funny, creepy, sad, uplifting, or depressing at different points throughout the movie. It's also slightly difficult to understand the movie if you watch the theatrical version the first time you see it, but after reading an explanation of the movie it all makes more sense. So I didn't really know what to make of the movie my first viewing, but now it's one of my faves to re-watch over and over.

8. Almost Famous (2000)

R | 122 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

90 Metascore

A high-school boy in the early 1970s is given the chance to write a story for Rolling Stone magazine about an up-and-coming rock band as he accompanies them on their concert tour.

Director: Cameron Crowe | Stars: Billy Crudup, Patrick Fugit, Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand

Votes: 293,379 | Gross: $32.53M

As a huge fan of classic rock music, this movie is a great period piece that so well captures what it was like to be a rock band in the 70's, just as rock-n-roll was "starting to die". Being semi-biographical based on the director and writer of the movie and his own experiences as a teenager, he's able to capture the essence of that time very well and get convincing performances to go along with it, many by relatively unknown actors at the time.

9. Magnolia (1999)

R | 188 min | Drama

78 Metascore

An epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of love, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley.

Director: Paul Thomas Anderson | Stars: Tom Cruise, Jason Robards, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman

Votes: 328,458 | Gross: $22.46M

Great great great drama. PT Anderson weaves the lives of these characters together in such a unique way and every character is three dimensional. Really just shows how our actions end up effecting others and how life is full of coincidences.

And I cannot think of a fault in the cast either. Tom Cruise, outstanding in a bit of a different role for him. Also loved Philip Seymour Hoffman for his genuine kindness in the care-taking role, similarly John C. Reilly is superb as the truly honest and caring cop who crosses paths with Melora Walters' drug-addled and scarred character, also a fantastic performance from her. Then you have Julianne Moore who is just as fantastic as the rest of the cast, basically in total breakdown mode the whole movie because her much older husband (Jason Robards) is dying of cancer, who she only married for money, but fell in love with once he got sick. Robards is exceptional as well. Also Philip Baker Hall does a wonderful job, and William H. Macy as the former quiz kid brings a heartbreaking story, but eventually a hopeful one, and Macy is so great expressing this through his acting and range of emotions.

Overall great movie, the cast is a huge standout, but the feeling after watching is a great one.

10. The Dark Knight (2008)

PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Crime, Drama

84 Metascore

When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice.

Director: Christopher Nolan | Stars: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine

Votes: 2,870,494 | Gross: $534.86M

Not just the best superhero movie ever, but one of the best movies ever. So many great things about it: the action, suspense, thriller, fantastic ending and just overall great movie. The acting is also top notch- Christian Bale as usual who has become one of the best actors of his generation, Caine and Freeman are great as usual, Eckhart and Gyllenhaal also. But goes without saying, Heath Ledger steals the show with one of the best acting performances I have ever seen.

11. Back to the Future (1985)

PG | 116 min | Adventure, Comedy, Sci-Fi

87 Metascore

Marty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.

Director: Robert Zemeckis | Stars: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover

Votes: 1,306,707 | Gross: $210.61M

Not THEE best movie of all time, but a true true classic and I love great classics, so it's in my top 15. Again, a movie you can watch OVER and OVER again and not get tired of it. I wasn't born until 10 years after this movie was released, but watching it today it still has the same relevance that it had in 1985. The plot and story is TIMELESS and really this movie can be watched by generations for centuries to come. I would say the best element to this movie, is the cleverness. I'm sure in the 1985 it was clever as hell, but even today it is beyond its time.

12. Blue Velvet (1986)

R | 120 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

75 Metascore

The discovery of a severed human ear found in a field leads a young man on an investigation related to a beautiful, mysterious nightclub singer and a group of psychopathic criminals who have kidnapped her child.

Director: David Lynch | Stars: Isabella Rossellini, Kyle MacLachlan, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern

Votes: 215,699 | Gross: $8.55M

Weeeeird movie, but a very thrilling one. This is probably David Lynch's best (just ahead of Mulholland Dr. and The Elephant man imo) and most straightforward movie, but it still manages to have the elements of surrealism he is so well-known for. Examples being the scene at suave Ben's house and near the end of the movie at the apartment.

Also I have to point out the cast, as Dennis Hopper is absolutely great as Frank Booth as his character is extremely unlikable and bizarre. Kyle MacLachlan does a fine job as well in this pre-twin peaks role and Laura Dern is good as well. Isabella Rossellini's character is very strange too, but she gives a fine performance.

Overall, the movie looks at the darkest and most deep roots of evil and the world and contrasts this with the love and hope that is possible in life.

13. The Shining (1980)

R | 146 min | Drama, Horror

68 Metascore

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.

Director: Stanley Kubrick | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

Votes: 1,106,583 | Gross: $44.02M

One of the best horror movies of all time. It's not like the horror movies you see these days that are played for cheap thrills. The characters are developed well from the beginning, and the environment is one of the key parts to the chilling atmosphere of the movie. You have a guy simply overlooking a hotel during the winter, who turns insane. He seems to be a pretty typical guy at the beginning, but he slowly falls into a descent of craziness. Overall, my favorite Kubrick movie, and one of the best performances from Jack Nicholson.

14. Dazed and Confused (1993)

R | 103 min | Comedy

82 Metascore

The adventures of high school and junior high students on the last day of school in May 1976.

Director: Richard Linklater | Stars: Jason London, Wiley Wiggins, Matthew McConaughey, Rory Cochrane

Votes: 199,484 | Gross: $7.99M

One of Richard Linklater's best and one of the best "coming of age" movies of all time with a fantastic soundtrack and nostalgia galore. Great performances all around, especially from Matthew McConaughey, Rory Cochrane, Jason London, and Wiley Wiggins. I recently watched it for the first time and probably watched it 5 more times in a two week period. And probably thought about watching everyday since I first saw it. Tarantino has it in his top 10 movies of all time, so I am glad to have it in my top 20.

15. The Truman Show (1998)

PG | 103 min | Comedy, Drama

90 Metascore

An insurance salesman discovers his whole life is actually a reality TV show.

Director: Peter Weir | Stars: Jim Carrey, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich

Votes: 1,196,338 | Gross: $125.62M

Maybe not as clever as "Back to the Future", but a wonderful concept and the movie is set up and executed perfectly. Just coming out at the cusp of the 21st century, it shows how much technology and the media can affect and control us in our every day lives, and may even make you a bit paranoid after watching. Jim Carrey manages to be funny as usual, but also brings seriousness and innocence to the role. Ed Harris is awesome and brings a touching performance as well. Overall, very thought provoking and will leave you with a warm feeling inside.

16. The Elephant Man (1980)

PG | 124 min | Biography, Drama

78 Metascore

A Victorian surgeon rescues a heavily disfigured man who is mistreated while scraping a living as a side-show freak. Behind his monstrous façade, there is revealed a person of kindness, intelligence and sophistication.

Director: David Lynch | Stars: Anthony Hopkins, John Hurt, Anne Bancroft, John Gielgud

Votes: 258,432

This movie has to to be the most emotional movie I've ever seen. I was just expecting some story about a deformed man, but it just hits you right in the feels. He is an outcast and seen as that way by people, but he is a person just like anyone else. Never cried more watching a movie in my life.

17. Unforgiven (1992)

R | 130 min | Drama, Western

85 Metascore

Retired Old West gunslinger William Munny reluctantly takes on one last job, with the help of his old partner Ned Logan and a young man, The "Schofield Kid."

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris

Votes: 436,149 | Gross: $101.16M

One of the best, if not thee best, Western out there. Im not usually a huge fan of them but when it is Eastwood it's hard to resist. "The Good, Bad, and the Ugly" is great, but I find I can watch this many times and see something new I hadn't seen before. Clint is, of course, great, but Gene Hackman is excellent. Morgan Freeman gives another fine performance as well as the "kid" he teams up with in the movie. Great story, great movie

18. Good Will Hunting (1997)

R | 126 min | Drama, Romance

71 Metascore

Will Hunting, a janitor at M.I.T., has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

Director: Gus Van Sant | Stars: Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Stellan Skarsgård

Votes: 1,067,879 | Gross: $138.43M

Such an awesome movie. Much respect to Matt Damon, great actor and writer, as well as Ben Affleck. But how can you hear the name of this movie and not think of Robin Williams? Exceptional dramatic performance by one of the funniest to ever live. Some of my favorite scenes are the park bench scene, "it's not your fault" and basically any of the other interactions between Williams and Damon in therapy sessions, and also Ben Affleck's "you owe it to me" speech near the end, and obviously the ending: "that son of a b*tch, he stole my line". Even better it was totally improvised by Robin Williams. Love it.

19. Taxi Driver (1976)

R | 114 min | Crime, Drama

94 Metascore

A mentally unstable veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Albert Brooks

Votes: 920,630 | Gross: $28.26M

As a huge Robert De Niro fan, I first checked this movie out in my younger days and found it quite strange. But as I've grown up I've learned to appreciate it a lot more. Much of it is simply about a man's descent into madness, but also about a guy who may be crazy, but also means well. It also details very well all the scum that exists in the world. Again, hard to compare De Niro roles, but has to be one of his best.

20. Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

R | 101 min | Comedy, Drama

80 Metascore

A family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their VW bus.

Directors: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris | Stars: Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Greg Kinnear, Abigail Breslin

Votes: 518,056 | Gross: $59.89M

I first watched this movie when it came out, and was too young to really enjoy it. But watching it again now that I am older, I realized how great this movie is. If I could describe it in one word, it would be: UPLIFTING. And it's uplifting without really trying hard to do so. All the characters in the movie you slowly start to relate to as the movie goes on. The main plot, a family road trip across the country, sounds a bit formulaic, but the movie itself is anything but. The way the road trip plays out is quirky and unexpected at times.

From the beginning, we meet Olive, who dreams about being a beauty queen. Her father Richard, who is an unsuccessful motivational speaker, his wife Sheryl and father, who is a heroin addict and loud mouth. Sheryl's son, Dwayne, who wants to become a test pilot and is taking an oath of silence. And finally Frank, Sheryl's brother, who has just attempted suicide after a series of events involving a gay lover.

Everyone in the family is different, and throughout the movie you see each of them have their dreams crushed and hearts broken in one way or another. But the end really ties up the movie together wonderfully, when they all end up dancing on the stage at the beauty pageant, showing that you should just get up and dance and not worry who cares, and just follow your dreams. Steve Carell is really the standout to me, but the whole ensemble does a great job.

21. Die Hard (1988)

R | 132 min | Action, Thriller

72 Metascore

A New York City police officer tries to save his estranged wife and several others taken hostage by terrorists during a Christmas party at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles.

Director: John McTiernan | Stars: Bruce Willis, Alan Rickman, Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald VelJohnson

Votes: 945,526 | Gross: $83.01M

Best action movie OF ALL TIME. I'm not a huge fan of action movies, but this movie is an all-time classic. A movie you can watch over and over and over and it never gets old. Bruce Willis is at his best in this movie, very different than his character in Pulp Fiction, as the cop John McClane: tough, clever, and funny; he really owns the movie. Alan Rickman is great as the leader of the terrorists too, and Reginald VelJohnson is awesome as one of the few cops who is on McClane's side. The action is high packed and unpredictable even after multiple viewings. A movie that will never age and even enjoyable for those who don't like action movies.

22. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Approved | 178 min | Adventure, Western

90 Metascore

A bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.

Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef, Aldo Giuffrè

Votes: 811,152 | Gross: $6.10M

One of the best westerns EVER. Great story, Clint Eastwood at his very best. And that standoff at the end! Wow!

23. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

R | 133 min | Drama

84 Metascore

In the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse.

Director: Milos Forman | Stars: Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, Michael Berryman, Peter Brocco

Votes: 1,072,299 | Gross: $112.00M

Awesome movie, after the Shining, probably Jack Nicholson's best movie. Very sad but uplifting at the same time.

24. Aliens (1986)

R | 137 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

84 Metascore

Decades after surviving the Nostromo incident, Ellen Ripley is sent out to re-establish contact with a terraforming colony but finds herself battling the Alien Queen and her offspring.

Director: James Cameron | Stars: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn, Carrie Henn, Paul Reiser

Votes: 762,991 | Gross: $85.16M

Wow. Such an incredible movie. I really love "Alien" and think it is a true classic horror movie, but "Aliens" is one of the best movie sequels of all time. Probably one of the most action-packed movies of all-time while also being very suspenseful. I felt the original had better acting and dialogue overall and is a classic psychological horror movie for the ages, but this one kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

25. Apocalypse Now (1979)

R | 147 min | Drama, Mystery, War

94 Metascore

A U.S. Army officer serving in Vietnam is tasked with assassinating a renegade Special Forces Colonel who sees himself as a god.

Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest

Votes: 710,138 | Gross: $83.47M

One of the best War movies ever. Great performances by Sheen and everyone else. Also Brando gives a classic performance, though he has very little screen time.

26. Once Upon a Time in America (1984)

R | 229 min | Crime, Drama

75 Metascore

A former Prohibition-era Jewish gangster returns to the Lower East Side of Manhattan 35 years later, where he must once again confront the ghosts and regrets of his old life.

Director: Sergio Leone | Stars: Robert De Niro, James Woods, Elizabeth McGovern, Treat Williams

Votes: 377,689 | Gross: $5.32M

Very long movie, but definitely worth viewing. It's also a very strange movie, especially upon ones first viewing. But watching it over and over again I came to appreciate it much more. Not sure what it is, but the movie seems very nostalgic to me. Truly epic movie in all the sense of the word and great performances by De Niro and Woods.

27. The Departed (2006)

R | 151 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

85 Metascore

An undercover cop and a mole in the police attempt to identify each other while infiltrating an Irish gang in South Boston.

Director: Martin Scorsese | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg

Votes: 1,422,184 | Gross: $132.38M

Great crime drama thriller. Scorsese is one of the best directors of all-time, and even going into the beginning of the 21st century he's still got it. This one is right behind "Goodfellas" for me in terms of his movies. The whole cast is excellent, imo Mark Walhberg was a standout, but Leo was great as usual. Of course Jack Nicholson too and Matt damon was good but not quite on par with the rest of the cast. Definitely one of the best crime/ganster films of all time besides Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, etc. Not quite making it into my top 20, but rewatching the movie could change that at about anytime.

28. Gran Torino (2008)

R | 116 min | Drama

73 Metascore

After a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem both the boy and himself.

Director: Clint Eastwood | Stars: Clint Eastwood, Bee Vang, Christopher Carley, Ahney Her

Votes: 814,948 | Gross: $148.10M

A much different movie than the likes of other Eastwood roles, but will always stay in my heart. The old man who is at first just a grumpy old man, turns into a man with heart and compassion for the kid who is bullied by his own family members simply because he is different, not necessarily because of his the color of his skin. A bit of a slow burner, but the climax is absolutely excellent, and the ending always chokes me up.

29. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

PG | 124 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Amazing animation, story, characters, voices, and movie. Near masterpiece.

Votes: 154,615 | Gross: $57.50M

One of the best movies out there about the ghetto and African American life in the "hood". Really realistic movie and shows the harsh reality of living in the slums of America. A must watch.

32. Stand by Me (1986)

R | 89 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

Has to be one of the best coming of age movie of all time. Period.

33. Dead Poets Society (1989)

Director: Peter Weir | Stars: Robin Williams, Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke, Josh Charles

Votes: 545,920 | Gross: $95.86M

Sad and uplifting movie. Robin Williams is absolutely fantastic, one of his best drama role right behind "Good Will Hunting". Really shows how you should follow your dreams and not let anyone get in your way.

34. Pleasantville (1998)

PG-13 | 124 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

71 Metascore

Not really an entertaining movie, but a very educational movie. One that should be shown in schools to prevent drug use. This is a very depressing movie and really hits you hard. The first time I watched it I just stared at the screen in shock for about 5 minutes. Depressing movie, but powerful.

Director: Oliver Stone | Stars: Charlie Sheen, Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Keith David

Votes: 439,485 | Gross: $138.53M

Another fantastic war movie. Charlie Sheen following in his father's footsteps in probably his best role. It's not a story of a battle between enemies, but an internal battle between allies. Really shows how war has a great affect on the subjects involved and how they will go to great lengths to get what they want. Shout out to Berenger and Dafoe as well.

Votes: 658,112 | Gross: $18.35M

Absolutely great drama. Everyone, at some point, just wants to get away from their life and just live simply. This movie is a perfect example of this. Even though the ending is tragic, it's still an excellent representation of nonconformity, something everyone has deep in side of them.

Votes: 287,798 | Gross: $5.82M

Loved this movie even more than the first one. Falling in love and meeting up again 9 years later is absolutely genius. It's really a much more mature story than the original movie and I absolutely love the ending, it almost makes the movie for me. Very adult movie compared to the first. The dialogue is excellent between Hawke and Delpy, who are both phenomenal dialogue actors, as they can carry on the same scene for 10+ minutes without interruption.

Director: Sidney Lumet | Stars: Henry Fonda, Lee J. Cobb, Martin Balsam, John Fiedler

Votes: 864,964 | Gross: $4.36M

One of the best classic movies ever. I first watched it in high school, thinking it would be boring, but ending up totally loving it. The same goes for Dead Poets Society, which I also watched in school. The actors are just phenomenal, how they can carry the movie with virtually all dialogue and set in a single room for the large majority of the movie. So great how the only guy who voted not guilty slowly convinced the other men to do the same, with high attention to detail.

Great satire of typical suburban life in America and study into what it's like to go through a mid-life crisis. I don't think it's Spacey's best acting, but it's my favorite movie of his. Overall it's a tragic movie, but leaves you with a glimmer of hope.

Votes: 719,323 | Gross: $67.44M

One of my favorite true crime movies. We hate criminals in real life, but in movies they are cool. There are just so many great scenes in this movie, though some boring ones as well. One of the best is the shootout scene outside the bank after the robbery, and also the ending chase scene at the airport. The whole cast brings the "heat" in this movie, pun intended. Robert Deniro and Al Pacino, two of the best of all time, and also Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, and Jon Voight are great.

Ahhh!!! One of the best "badass" movies of all time. Maybe overrated in some people's minds, but overall it's a classic. I have to say it's Pacino's best acting in his career, even ahead of "The Godfather". Just a joy to watch.

Great movie with a similar feel to "All the Presidents Men" but with less of a thrilling tone and more three dimensional characters.

Great teen/coming of age dramedy. Logan Lerman is at his best here, and Emma Watson gives a great performance and not only her physical beauty, but also personality brings a loving aspect to her character. Ezra Miller perhaps gives the best performance, and Paul Rudd is very likable in a small but memorable role. Based on the book, which is also amazing as well, the actors fit the characters perfectly. An emotional movie that teenagers should see, as it deals with many areas of a teenagers life such as angst, depression, friendships, love, and tragedy.

Votes: 1,051,270 | Gross: $293.51M

A great movie and one of Bruce Willis' best. Obviously known for it's twist ending, which maybe only a select few saw coming the first time they saw it, is one of the best twists ever and totally came out of nowhere the first time I saw the film and shocked the hell out of me. Except for that, the movie itself is great and very re-watchable, the twist is just an icing on the cake. It's not necessarily scary, but has a eerie atmosphere to it. One of my favorite scenes in the movie is in the car when Haley Joel Osment's character tells his mom he sees dead people and he's been talking to his grandma who told him something about his mom's childhood, making his mom break down. Excellent scene and flawless acting from Osment and Collette.

One of the best war movies of all-time. Almost 2 movies in one, with the first half being about training for war and the second half about the actual war and the effect it has on people. Absolutely amazing performances by Vincent D'onforio and R. Lee Emery, and Modine carries the movie nicely. Not my favorite war movie but another great movie overall by the late and great Stanley Kubrick.

Votes: 339,276 | Gross: $5.54M

In contrast to "Before Sunset" this movie shows the story of these two characters slowly falling in love. Probably one of the best movies about this subject out there and it just feels so genuine. Again the dialogue makes the movie because it's pretty much 105 minutes of talking and this reveals the chemistry between the two main characters.

Pretty badass movie. One of the only Tarantino movies I've actually seen in theaters. Though I did see a special screening on Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs as well. But I had seen them before so wasn't as good as it would have been on first viewing. Django was probably one of the best movie theater experiences I've had. Watching it again on DVD a few times it's not quite as good, but still a great movie. Great supporting performances by Leo, Waltz and Goggins, and Jamie Foxx I thought gave the best performance. Samuel L Jackson as usual stole every scene he was in.

Votes: 383,803 | Gross: $7.22M

Another great Lynch movie. Of the Lynch movies on my list, probably the weirdest compared to Blue Velvet and the Elephant man, as those are both relatively straightforward. This movie is open to much interpretation, but my view is that most of it is a dream, and only the end is reality. It shows the harsh reality of trying to become big in Hollywood, and in a trippy way. Wonderful performance by Naomi Watts, and good performances by Laura Harring and Justin Theroux.

Great thriller movie. I don't see it as much of a horror, though it does have its moments. Good performances by all the cast, including Glover, Elwes, Leung, and Whannell. Also one of the best twist endings I've ever seen.

Great movie about a young man coping with cancer and having a "50/50" chance of surviving. Perfect balance between comedy and drama. The chemistry between Gordon-Levitt and Kendrick is great, and of course Rogen is hilarious with his crude humor. Though I sometimes find him too over the top, I thought he gave a convincingly funny performance here.

Votes: 546,565 | Gross: $178.80M

Maybe one of my favorite Tom Cruise movies. Great chemistry between him and Hoffman, who gives an absolutely outstanding performance as an idiot savant. After his fathers death, he realizes he was not in the will and discovers he has a brother. Through much of the movie he has very little patience with him, but slowly builds a beautiful connection. Even though Hoffman's character is pretty much socially inept, his brother begins to love him for who he is anyway.

Another great movie by PT Anderson. It shows the rise of a young man into a porn star, and eventually he goes beyond his limits and thinks he's better than everybody else. Great performance by Marky mark, but Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore are excellent as well, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, Don Cheadle, John C Reilly, and Willian H macy give stellar performances as well as Heather Graham. And also maybe overlooked but Alfred Molina gives a fine performance in addition to the rest of the great cast. Great movie with lots of style and substance. The ending is classic as well though maybe over the top.

Probably the best high school movie of all time. It brings 5 different students that have different stereotypes and shows their interactions and eventually realizing they all have problems and are not as different as they thought. Really a wonderful movie, mostly for people who didn't really fit in during high school. Judd Nelson is phenomenal and I loved Ally Sheedy. Paul Gleason is great as well, a bit over the top though. Molly Ringwald in another one of her teen movies, Emilio eEteves and Anthony Michael Hall give fine performances as well, even the janitor too. It's really a movie about that type of person we were in high school and how we may not have been as different as other groups of people than we thought.

Director: Gabriele Muccino | Stars: Will Smith, Thandiwe Newton, Jaden Smith, Brian Howe

Votes: 560,718 | Gross: $163.57M

One of the most uplifting movies I have seen. Showed very well how hard it is to live with being poor and how this effects daily life. Mostly though it as about dreams and how hard it can be to reach these dreams, but shows that it is possible if you give it your all and never give up. One of Will Smith's best in my opinion, and his son Jaden Smith gives almost an equally great performance as his son in the movie as well. The movie shows how much struggle this guy goes through just to have a place to live and food to eat. It takes him awhile to reach his goal of becoming a stockbroker, but you know the moment he is called into the office he got the job. The end is absolutely excellent and makes me cry every time. The part that always gets me is when the boss gives him $5 dollars that he owed him which at that point meant nothing to him, but showed how desperate he was before just for 5 bucks and paying him back meant nothing at that point. Also like that it is based on a true story, and Will Smith's character ended up being a multi-millionaire. Just shows how hard work and dedication can get you anywhere if you put your mind to it. Also a scene I love is him telling his son that he shouldn't let anyone tell him what to do and to never give up. Great scene.

Votes: 183,613 | Gross: $30.86M

One of the truly scariest movies of all time. The realistic shooting of it makes it very real and like something that could happen to anyone and almost feels like you're in the persons situation and feel what they are feeling. The second half is much better than the first with the suspense, but the first half has a nice build up. Excellent performance by Marilyn Burns.

Not only one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen but probably THEE weirdest. Pretty controversial at the time it was made and rightfully so, but it shows that sometimes we can't control our impulses. The main character, played by Malcolm Mcdowell is one that you both extremely hate and then feel kind of sorry for. Great movie (and performance).

A very depressing but important movie. One of the best portrayals of the holocaust put on film and realistically portrayals the horror of the holocaust and its impact. Excellent performance by all the cast including Ralph Fiennes who is fantastic, and Neeson and Kingsley very great as well. One of those movies you have to watch if you're in the mood, but a movie everyone should see.

Votes: 1,145,334 | Gross: $23.34M

Pretty good crime drama that weaves together the lives of 5 separate criminals who meet at a police lineup and team up to get back at the police and commit a robbery. The story is told to a police detective (Palminteri) after the fact by Kevin Spacey, who owns this movie. The rest of the "usual suspects" are great as well, mostly Benicio Del Toro, and Pete Postletwaithe gives a fine performance as well. Great movie with lots of twists and turns, including one of the best twist endings I've seen in a movie, perhaps right behind "The Sixth Sense".

Awesome movie about a hunter who stumbles upon millions in cash and subsequently is followed by a psychopathic serial killer, played by Javier Bardem who gives a performance of a lifetime. Obviously a classic considered one of the best movies of all-time. I find it slightly overrated, but that's not to say I don't like the movie. I'm a huge fan of gangster films and movies about the mob and this is about as good as it gets. Although certain things like it being slow at times and just the style of the movie puts it behind movies such as Pulp Fiction and Goodfellas for me. Still a great movie though, Al Pacino and Marlon Brando at their best.

Very good crime-mystery-drama about 3 cops with different styles. I honestly thought Crowe gave the best performance, Guy Pierce was great as well, and not Spacey's best but he is still good. The main plot basically being the 3 cops investigating a murder with their own brand of justice, and weaves their stories together nicely. Also it shows the corruption behind people that are supposed to be admired but take their power to their advantage.

Amazing horror/thriller movie with an original and quite a thought-provoking concept. The acting and casting was great all-around as well. Had never heard of Daniel Kaluuya before this movie, but he is great. The same goes for Allison Williams. The rest of the cast is perfect as well, including Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener as the parents. Marcus Henderson and Betty Gabriel bring a creepy vibe to the movie, especially Gabriel as Georgina. Caleb Landry Jones, Stephen Root, and Lekeith Stanfield were on their game as well. Loved Keith Stanfield in "Short Term 12". Also much credit to Lil Rel Howery for making the movie absolutely hilarious at times. Overall, a great addition to the thriller/horror drama, that stands out because of its comedic elements and somewhat predictable but awesome twist. Huge props to Jordan Peele for writing and directing it.

Loved this movie right after the first viewing. Not a lot of action, but the dialogue is great and builds up to a great climax. One of Kurt Russel's best in years, Samuel L jackson great as usual, Walton Goggins as well, along with Bruce Dern, Tim Roth, and Michael Madsen. But gotta give a lot of credit to Jennifer Jason Leigh, she was excellent.

Shy 14-year-old Duncan goes on summer vacation with his mother, her overbearing boyfriend, and her boyfriend's daughter. Having a rough time fitting in, Duncan finds an unexpected friend in Owen, manager of the Water Wizz water park.

Directors: Nat Faxon, Jim Rash | Stars: Steve Carell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, AnnaSophia Robb

Votes: 156,848 | Gross: $21.50M

What a wonderful, charming, and unique coming of age dramedy. This is the story of Duncan (Liam James) who's mother (Toni Collette) has taken him on vacation to her demeaning boyfriend Trent's (Steve Carrell) house by the beach for the summer, along with his daughter Steph (Zoe Levin). Once they arrive at the beach house, Duncan and his mother meet Trent's neighbors Betty (Allison Janney), her daughter Susanna (Annasophia Robb) and son Peter (River Alexander). At first, Duncan doesn't know what he is going to do for the summer, and it seems his only friend is the neighbors son, who is a few years younger. But after venturing off on a cute pink bike, he discovers a new friend Owen (Sam Rockwell), who manages a water park near by. As they slowly become closer, he gets a job and becomes more outgoing by making a name for himself at the waterpark. At the same time, he starts building a friendship with his Susanna as well. Meanwhile, there are problems going on within the household in which Duncan intervenes, involving an affair between Trent and his friend Kip's (Rob Corddry) wife Joan (Amanda Peet). This leads to a confrontation between these characters after Duncan and his mom suspect Trent is having the affair. Though this subplot contributes to the story, the real plot is the relationship between Owen and Duncan at the waterpark as they slowly build a father-son like relationship, providing advice to Duncan on growing up and dealing with his mom's boyfriend's degrading behavior, telling him it is not about him and he needs to go his own way in life. Really just an enjoyable and incredible movie. Sam Rockwell is absolutely FANTASTIC and hilarious, as is Janney. The chemistry between Liam James and Robb is lovely, Toni Collette of course gives a great performance and again retains her status as one of the best actresses in the world. And Steve Carrell's performance, though playing an unlike-able character, is great as well. Great movie that will definitely make you laugh, probably cry, and maybe even cheer.

Another great installment in the original Star Wars trilogy. Despite some people not liking the Ewoks, I thought they were pretty funny. I think this movie may be slightly overrated with it's imdb rating, but it is light years ahead of the sequels. One of the best scenes being Darth Vader's death scene and the revealing of his face.

Wraps up the "Dark Knight" trilogy wonderfully. Not quite nearly as good as "The Dark Knight, but again it's the perfect way to end the trilogy. A lot of action, new batman technology, the addition of Catwoman, and Robin (Joseph Gordon Levitt) all make the movie good. Along with another great performance by Bale and Caine. And Hardy obviously didn't quite live up to the expectations of Heath Ledger's Joker, but the villain itself was nearly as scary as the Joker.

Great movie for people who lack confidence in themselves and that they can overcome this fear. Colin firth is excellent, and Rush and Bonham Carter are great as well. Great uplifting and moving movie.

Director: Michael Cimino | Stars: Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale, John Savage

Votes: 362,183 | Gross: $48.98M

Very depressing movie. It could be considered a war movie, but it's mostly about the effects of wars and not actually war itself. It starts off pretty slow building up the characters and their personalities with the main story of a group of life long friends and their friend who is getting married. The first 45 mins or so show this and this group of men's lives in a small American town in Pennsylvania. Then suddenly they are in the war and captured by Vietnamese troops who make them play a very intense game of Russian roulette, being forced to pull the trigger at their head with a chance of the gun firing or not going off. The title of the movie is also important as the main character's and his friends favorite hobby is hunting deer which is a good contrast to the war. Great performances by the whole cast, especially Walken and De Niro. One of John Cazale's best and final movies, and Meryl Streep and John Savage are good as well. Great movie about the effects of war.

Another great superhero movie that isn't exactly a superhero movie but about the origins of a superhero. Love this movie because without it we wouldn't have one of the best movies of all time in The Dark Knight and TDK rises which wrap up not only the best superhero movie trilogies of all time, but one of the best in general.

Very very realistic portrayal of a slave who is captured and put into slavery. He's a free man who, as the title suggests, is held in slavery for twelve years and sees many horrible things but still is very hopeful. Chiwetel Ejifor and Fassbender are great, but Lupita Nyong'o is absolutely excellent. Also good performances of the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt as people who are sympathetic to this man's situation, and also Sarah Paulson is great as a wicked wife of a slave owner. Very sad and realistic movie but a hopeful one in the end.

Wow! What can I say, is that really Billy Bob Thornton? What an amazing performance in an amazing movie about a man (Karl Childers) who is getting out of a mental institution after killing his mother when he was a child. Then he meets a young boy and becomes good acquaintances with him and his family takes in Karl. This would be fine if the husband wasn't an abusive alcoholic. Good performances all around, but BBT at his best.

Votes: 485,819 | Gross: $90.14M

Another excellent movie directed by Clint Eastwood in the crime drama genre. It can be slow at times but the story is great and flows well, the acting is excellent, especially from Penn, though Robbins, Bacon, Fishburne are great as well. A story about a 3 friends who grew up together, one becoming a cop, the other an ex-con, and one a regular blue collar worker. These three men are all deeply affected by a childhood tragedy in which one of them (Robbins) was abducted by a group of child sex offenders. Fast forwarding to their adult ages, Jimmy (Penn), eventually comes to suspect Dave was involved in the death of his daughter (Emmy Rossum). While at the same time Sean (Bacon) and Whitey (Fishburne) investigate the crime. Such a great movie about broken friendships, regrets, and how the death of a family member of one of those men has such an impact on the three men.

Wow...really one of Pacino's best movies. Forget "The Godfather" and "Scarface", he is absolutely gold in this movie. The main plot is basically a bank robbery involving Sonny (Pacino) trying to get money to pay for his gay lover's sex operation. Also a great performance by John Cazale, who appeared in five feature movies in his career before his death, all in the IMDb top 250 and nominated and/or won many Oscars. Great thiller, that is intense throughout, and a shocking ending.

Very devastating movie. Based on real events, a man (Don Cheadle) houses as many Tutsi refugees as possible in the hotel he owns during the war between them and the Hutu militia. Such a realistic and visual movie about war and evil that is in the world. Cheadle is great of course, but everyone is good here from Nolte to Sophie Okonedo to Joaquin Phoenix, as well as much of the supporting cast. It is a very sad movie but shows glimmers of hope.

Great teen movie about a supervisor who works at a group home for at-risk youth and her boyfriend who also works there. Many emotional scenes between these supervisors and the children, in particular Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever) and Marcus (Keith Stanfield). Not to spoil it but the main character (Brie Larson) was also abused as a child and this is why she relates so well to the kids. Really moving movie and a sort of a coming of age drama to me. Brie Larson is absolutely fantastic and John Gallagher Jr is great as well, with Stanfield and Dever delivering equally fine performances. Watch this movie!

Okay, obviously not Tarantino's best as I have it behind 4 of his other movies, but still one of his best in terms of character pieces. The overall feel of the movie still has that cool feeling to it that made me enjoy it as I did other Tarantino movies. As great as Grier and Samuel L Jackson were, I thought De Niro gave a quietly great performance but Forester is probably the stand out. Keaton and Fonda are good as well. A bit of a different crime/drama in terms of Tarantino movies and the genre in general, focusing more on the characters than the actual plot which is more of a backdrop it seems.

Wow! Another great chick flick that is a guilty pleasure. I know it was promoted as a comedy, which yes it does have many funny parts, but it's also a deep drama. Dealing with many real life situations including cancer and suicide. Some people may say this kind of makes the movie not sure of itself, but I thought with this movie it was perfect. This woman (Collette) is obsessed with getting married and goes as far as looking in ads for men to marry who she doesn't necessarily even love. But her father is a very emotionally abusive person and this affects the whole family, particularly the mother. After some dramatic events that MAYBE seem a bit contrived, the movie ends on a very great note that makes up for this. The ending is absolutely perfect and one of the favorite movie endings of mine.

Probably my favorite Paul Giamatti movie, and Haden Church is great as well, and includes a good performance by the sister of the one and only Michael Madsen, Virginia, and a better performance by Sandra Oh (Grey's Anatomy) than I expected. It reminded me of "The Hangover" in a way, which don't get me wrong is hilarious, but Sideways had more character depth, but not really much of a storyline either.
