1. Martyrs (2008)
R | 99 min | Horror
A young woman's quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.
Director: Pascal Laugier | Stars: Morjana Alaoui, Mylène Jampanoï, Catherine Bégin, Robert Toupin
Votes: 106,532
The single most terrifying, haunting, brutalising, moving, thought-provoking film I have ever seen. Not recommended for anyone except those with a desire to peek inside pandora's box of pain in search for enlightenment. Only watch if you dare to re-calibrate your sense of humanity's purpose, and what it is capable of doing in order to achieve the most ultimate of knowledge.
If this film bores you (as some claim) then I fear for your soul. If it haunts you for days, or weeks after, then it has done it's job. If your certainities are crushed and you find yourself being more philosophical about life, well, that is the power of great art. Astonishing.
2. American Gangster (2007)
R | 157 min | Biography, Crime, Drama
An outcast New York City cop is charged with bringing down Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas, whose real life inspired this partly biographical film.
Director: Ridley Scott | Stars: Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Josh Brolin
Votes: 452,718 | Gross: $130.16M
Great depiction of a Manhattan drug kingpin - or absolute badman - and how he works his operations. Great argument against prohibition, and a nod to the fact that the military industrial complex is complicit in drug trafficing. Who benefits in the end? The cycle just continues.
3. Avatar (2009)
PG-13 | 162 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy
A paraplegic Marine dispatched to the moon Pandora on a unique mission becomes torn between following his orders and protecting the world he feels is his home.
Director: James Cameron | Stars: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez
Votes: 1,387,088 | Gross: $760.51M
Thoroughly entertaining visual spectacle with thought-provoking connotations to those who pay attention. Ignoring obvious linguistic let-downs like 'Unobtainium' helps you to think about the concept behind this more deeply: exploring the outer reaches of the cosmos to obtain a fuel source which will help keep mankind in his narrow-minded status quo. And why not destroy a peaceful population of symbiotic and empathic 'aliens' (Na'vi - native americans?) in the process? A deep meditation on man's parasitic motivations, all coloured-in with never-before-seen beauty. You have to become the 'other', as Sully does, in order to realise your own flaws. If you are empathic, you will fall in love with Pandora's inhabitants and become 'a traitor to your own race' (which is Cameron's intention, I believe). A masterpiece of our times.
4. Savages (I) (2012)
R | 131 min | Action, Crime, Drama
Pot growers Ben and Chon face off against the Mexican drug cartel who kidnapped their shared girlfriend.
Director: Oliver Stone | Stars: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Benicio Del Toro
Votes: 134,549 | Gross: $47.38M
Exploring the modern weed culture of America through the entwined lives of a hippy and a war veteran weed-growing, girl-sharing duo, all the way to Mexican cartels via corrupt DEA agent John Travolta. Entertaining with a decent twist or two on the way. More than your average Cheech and Chong movie!
5. The Signal (2014)
PG-13 | 97 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi
On a road trip, Nic and two friends are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, Nic regains consciousness - only to find himself in a waking nightmare.
Director: William Eubank | Stars: Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Laurence Fishburne
Votes: 69,286 | Gross: $0.60M
Interesting exploration of extra-terrestrial mentality (xeno-psychology) and it's intersection with the mind set of computer hackers/geeks. Sounds weird? It's quite a weird film. But weird in a good way.
6. Detachment (2011)
Not Rated | 98 min | Drama
A substitute teacher who drifts from classroom to classroom finds a connection to the students and teachers during his latest assignment.
Director: Tony Kaye | Stars: Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks, Marcia Gay Harden, Lucy Liu
Votes: 99,219 | Gross: $0.07M
Simultaneously gripping and detaching exploration of failing schools systems in America, the kids who are left to be brought up by the schools by failed parents, and the failure of a culture which allows this to happen. Shown through the eyes of a damaged yet inspiring substitute teacher. Heart-breaking.
7. Jacob's Ladder (I) (1990)
R | 113 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

Director: Adrian Lyne | Stars: Tim Robbins, Elizabeth Peña, Danny Aiello, Matt Craven
Votes: 117,952 | Gross: $26.12M
Fanastic film charting the chilling use of experimental drug 'BZ' on US troops in Vietnam. Again, explores concepts of reincarnation and the Tibetan Book of the Dead, (see 'Enter The Void' for similar thematic exploration) as well as novel projected-into-the-future time travel whilst experiencing altered states between life and death. Deep, thought-provoking and very moving film, brilliantly acted by Tim Robbins. Is he alive or dead, or both? Watch out for the angelic chiropractor!
8. Enter the Void (2009)
Not Rated | 161 min | Drama, Fantasy
An American drug dealer living in Tokyo is betrayed by his best friend and killed in a drug deal. His soul, observing the repercussions of his death, seeks resurrection.
Director: Gaspar Noé | Stars: Nathaniel Brown, Paz de la Huerta, Cyril Roy, Olly Alexander
Votes: 88,090 | Gross: $0.34M
Awesome and trippy film, examining the concept of states between life and death (called 'Bardos' from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, which is referenced at the beginning), via the hallucinogenic drug DMT... like I said, trippy!

So much potential, could have been so much better...stylistically great, but terrible plot made this franchise reboot fall way short

Haunting first encounter with an extra-terrestrial entity which set the standard for outer-space horror movies. Psychologically very powerful, and scared the life out of me when I saw it as a kid (about 10 years old!) Great film.

Director: John McTiernan | Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Kevin Peter Hall, Elpidia Carrillo
Votes: 455,193 | Gross: $59.74M
Terrific film, exploring the concept of man 'the hunter' becoming 'the hunted' by an advanced alien trophy-hunting lifeform - the Predator. Scary from a psychological perspective as it makes all of humanity the potential victim/trophy. Gruesome scenes of jungle carnage are highly entertaining; if only Hollywood didn't need the 'happy' ending. Great lines from Arnie - "If it bleeds, we can kill it'.
