Votes: 44,565

Jan 3

Intentionally awkward performances/dialogue would make this a difficult watch for most. Add to that a very odd set up and it seemed like a winner. Unfortunately the plot was more weird for the sake of weird instead of actually leading towards something. 6/10

2. Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)

PG-13 | 192 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

Votes: 494,772 | Gross: $659.68M

Jan 4

Even going into this with low expectations didn’t help. Figured it would be worth seeing in theatres for the spectacle of it. The 3D was nothing special and all the effects and style grew tired almost immediately leaving hours of boredom. Repetitive in itself but even more with the first film. 3/10

3. Orphan (2009)

R | 123 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

42 Metascore

A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she appears.

Votes: 252,537 | Gross: $41.60M

Jan 4

Decided to enjoy a rewatch of this before watching the prequel. Amazing how good her performance is considering how young she was when it was filmed. Very convincing. 8/10

4. Citizen Kane (1941)

PG | 119 min | Drama, Mystery

100 Metascore

Following the death of publishing tycoon Charles Foster Kane, reporters scramble to uncover the meaning of his final utterance: 'Rosebud.'

Director: Orson Welles | Stars: Orson Welles, Joseph Cotten, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead

Votes: 466,124 | Gross: $1.59M

Jan 4

Always a delight to watch. It holds up well and it’s amazing to think of how much of what is done in this film was a new innovation at the time. 9/10

5. Orphan: First Kill (2022)

R | 99 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

54 Metascore

After orchestrating a brilliant escape from an Estonian psychiatric facility, Esther travels to America by impersonating the missing daughter of a wealthy family.

Director: William Brent Bell | Stars: Isabelle Fuhrman, Julia Stiles, Rossif Sutherland, Hiro Kanagawa

Votes: 46,324

Jan 5

A worthy sequel as far as the story goes. Unfortunately this one falters where the other excelled. The actress is now much older and was not convincing as an even younger child. 7/10

6. Rent (2005)

PG-13 | 135 min | Drama, Musical, Romance

53 Metascore

In New York City's gritty East Village, a group of bohemians strive for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic.

Director: Chris Columbus | Stars: Taye Diggs, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Rapp

Votes: 55,933 | Gross: $29.08M

Jan 5

Only one memorable song though they were all pretty good. If the film was edited down some it could have been a great musical. As is it drags on too long. The emotional impact was also less than expected because of the way they chose to end it. 6/10

7. The Menu (2022)

R | 107 min | Comedy, Horror, Thriller

71 Metascore

A young couple travels to a remote island to eat at an exclusive restaurant where the chef has prepared a lavish menu, with some shocking surprises.

Director: Mark Mylod | Stars: Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hoult, Hong Chau

Votes: 392,798 | Gross: $38.50M

Jan 5

A clear case of the trailer doing the film a disservice. So much is shown in the trailer that it didn’t leave enough to make the full film worthwhile. Assumptions of what else is likely to happen prove better than the reality. 6/10

8. The Hunt (2012)

R | 115 min | Drama

77 Metascore

A teacher lives a lonely life, all the while struggling over his son's custody. His life slowly gets better as he finds love and receives good news from his son, but his new luck is about to be brutally shattered by an innocent little lie.

Director: Thomas Vinterberg | Stars: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm

Votes: 364,573 | Gross: $0.69M

Jan 5

A sad and infuriating drama that could likely be applied to some cases where people have been unfairly ‘cancelled’. Perfect performances throughout and just enough humour to keep it from staying too dark. 9/10

9. Violent Night (2022)

R | 112 min | Action, Comedy, Thriller

55 Metascore

An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage. However, they aren't prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus is on the grounds, and he's about to show why this Nick is no saint.

Director: Tommy Wirkola | Stars: David Harbour, John Leguizamo, Beverly D'Angelo, Alex Hassell

Votes: 99,146 | Gross: $50.06M

Jan 6

Setup seemed too simple to start with but it expanded nicely and allowed for some extra bloody/gory kills. Nice that it works to have a killer Santa who isn’t evil. 8/10

10. Babylon (I) (2022)

R | 189 min | Comedy, Drama, History

61 Metascore

A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

Director: Damien Chazelle | Stars: Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Jean Smart, Olivia Wilde

Votes: 167,817

Jan 6

Beautiful film from beginning to end. Stylistically directed, top notch performances and a score to keep the whole thing flowing. The fact that it’s about the movie industry elevates it even more for a movie fanatic. 9/10

11. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)

PG-13 | 122 min | Action, Adventure

65 Metascore

Indiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.

Director: Steven Spielberg | Stars: Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett, Shia LaBeouf, Karen Allen

Votes: 491,564 | Gross: $317.10M

Jan 6

So widely criticized for many reasons. Despite those criticisms, I still enjoy it. Ranks 4th out of the 4 Jones films but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. Still has the fun humour and action mix that makes these films great. 7/10

12. The Kings of Summer (2013)

R | 95 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

61 Metascore

Three teenage friends, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land.

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts | Stars: Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Arias, Nick Offerman

Votes: 84,405 | Gross: $1.29M

Jan 7

Didn’t hold up to my 9/10 rating from the first time. Still enjoyed it though. A natural and innocent feel to the whole thing makes it something special. 8/10

13. Strange World (2022)

PG | 102 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

65 Metascore

The legendary Clades are a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest and most crucial mission.

Directors: Don Hall, Qui Nguyen | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, Dennis Quaid

Votes: 45,883

Jan 7

Interesting twist that was underutilized. Some decent Disney characters though so still fun and better than expected. 7/10

14. Final Destination 3 (2006)

43 Metascore

Wendy Christensen and a group of teens who escaped a fatal roller-coaster crash face a bloody date with Death.

Director: James Wong | Stars: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ryan Merriman, Kris Lemche, Alexz Johnson

Votes: 153,787 | Gross: $54.10M

Jan 8

Consistently enjoyable series. The initial vision accident seemed less severe than any of the others in this one but still made it fun. The timing of the vision vs reality is something they should pay more attention to since it doesn’t work again in this one. 8/10

15. The Final Destination (2009)

R | 82 min | Horror, Thriller

30 Metascore

A horrifying premonition saves a young man and his friends from death during a racetrack accident but terrible fates await them nonetheless.

Director: David R. Ellis | Stars: Nick Zano, Krista Allen, Andrew Fiscella, Bobby Campo

Votes: 115,127 | Gross: $66.48M

Jan 8

Better opening accident vision this time around. Would have been great to see this in 3D. 8/10

16. The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

PG | 104 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

75 Metascore

A cooler-than-ever Bruce Wayne must deal with the usual suspects as they plan to rule Gotham City, while discovering that he has accidentally adopted a teenage orphan who wishes to become his sidekick.

Director: Chris McKay | Stars: Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes

Votes: 172,629 | Gross: $175.75M

Jan 9

Some of the same great humour from the Lego Movie. More of that could have made this even better. Overall I think it’s the mix of characters that keeps this from being as good as that. 7/10

17. Look Away (2018)

TV-MA | 103 min | Drama, Fantasy, Horror

Maria, an alienated high-school student, has her life turned upside down when she switches places with her sinister mirror image.

Director: Assaf Bernstein | Stars: India Eisley, Jason Isaacs, Mira Sorvino, Penelope Mitchell

Votes: 22,333

Jan 10

Simple setup that doesn’t do much to go outside of the box. Very predictable overall. Nothing special aside from the lead actress carrying the film despite being an unknown. 6/10

18. Run Sweetheart Run (2020)

R | 104 min | Horror, Thriller

51 Metascore

After what seems to be an innocent date, Cherie now faces a night of terror when her date hunts her down and tries to kill her. She now must run for her life throughout the city and escape his grasp.

Director: Shana Feste | Stars: Ella Balinska, Pilou Asbæk, Clark Gregg, Shohreh Aghdashloo

Votes: 7,382

Jan 13

Surprisingly creative but at the same time it would have been better if it was more straightforward. 6/10

19. Bright (I) (2017)

TV-MA | 117 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

29 Metascore

A detective must work with an Orc to find a powerful wand before evil creatures do.

Director: David Ayer | Stars: Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Edgar Ramírez

Votes: 201,707

Jan 14

Aside from going too heavy on the comparison between racism in the real world and racism in the Bright universe this was an original and entertaining fantasy action film. 7/10

20. Final Destination 5 (2011)

R | 92 min | Horror, Thriller

50 Metascore

Death returns to claim the lucky survivors of a deadly bridge collapse in this fifth frightening installment in the series.

Director: Steven Quale | Stars: Nicholas D'Agosto, Emma Bell, Arlen Escarpeta, Miles Fisher

Votes: 125,047 | Gross: $42.59M

Jan 14

Decent main catastrophe to start it all off. The rules seem to have changed suddenly in this one though there hasn’t exactly been consistency throughout the series. Still fun anyhow and looking forward to the next one. 7/10

21. Matilda: The Musical (II) (2022)

PG | 117 min | Comedy, Drama, Family

72 Metascore

An adaptation of the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical. Matilda tells the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a sharp mind and a vivid imagination, dares to take a stand to change her story with miraculous results.

Director: Matthew Warchus | Stars: Alisha Weir, Emma Thompson, Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham

Votes: 28,310

Jan 14

This was hard to enjoy since I love the original so much. The songs were fun and the story was basically the same but it was a pale comparison to the original. As a stand-alone I don’t think it would have much impact either. 6/10

22. Groundhog Day (1993)

PG | 101 min | Comedy, Drama, Fantasy

72 Metascore

A narcissistic, self-centered weatherman finds himself in a time loop on Groundhog Day.

Director: Harold Ramis | Stars: Bill Murray, Andie MacDowell, Chris Elliott, Stephen Tobolowsky

Votes: 685,365 | Gross: $70.91M

Jan 15

There is a reason this is the measuring stick for time loop films. Funny and true to its conceit for the most part at least. There are a couple moments where you question the timing of things but it does fully commit with him being stuck as long as he obviously was with what he accomplishes. 8/10

23. Source Code (2011)

PG-13 | 93 min | Action, Drama, Mystery

74 Metascore

A soldier wakes up in someone else's body and discovers he's part of an experimental government program to find the bomber of a commuter train within 8 minutes.

Director: Duncan Jones | Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright

Votes: 549,967 | Gross: $54.71M

Jan 15

Saw this listed on Netflix after watching Groundhog Day and figured it was a good time loop choice to follow up with. Very different use of the time loop but also very effective. 8/10

24. Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)

PG-13 | 104 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

55 Metascore

When Mr. Harrigan dies, Craig, the teen who befriended and did odd jobs for him, puts his smart phone in his pocket before burial. When the lonely youth sends his dead friend a message, he is shocked to get a return text.

Director: John Lee Hancock | Stars: Donald Sutherland, Jaeden Martell, Joe Tippett, Colin O'Brien

Votes: 38,198

Jan 14

A cool premise that doesn’t take the opportunity to take the story further. Likely because it’s based on a short story and didn’t bother to extend it enough. 6/10

25. Music (I) (2021)

PG-13 | 107 min | Drama, Musical

23 Metascore

Zu is newly sober when she receives news that she is to become the sole guardian of her half-sister named Music, a young girl on the autism spectrum. The film explores two of Sia's favorite themes: finding your voice and creating family.

Director: Sia | Stars: Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Maddie Ziegler, Mary Kay Place

Votes: 9,072

Jan 14

I feel like this is an unfairly criticized film. The songs were creative and entertaining in the way they were shot. The story was touching and the lead performance was well done. That performance may have turned some off to the film though. 6/10

26. You're Next (2011)

R | 95 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

66 Metascore

When the Davison family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of mysterious killers soon learns that one of the victims harbors a secret talent for fighting back.

Director: Adam Wingard | Stars: Sharni Vinson, Joe Swanberg, AJ Bowen, Nicholas Tucci

Votes: 109,498 | Gross: $18.47M

Jan 16

Takes the home invasion sub genre to another level in many ways. Sharni Vinson was perfect in her final girl role. 9/10

27. The Thing (1982)

R | 109 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

57 Metascore

A research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.

Director: John Carpenter | Stars: Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Richard Masur

Votes: 466,948 | Gross: $13.78M

Jan 21

The various forms the creature takes throughout the film is what really makes the film. While the effects could look much better now, it still works the way they are. 7/10

28. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2022)

PG | 74 min | Animation, Comedy, Drama

A new school year, his brother Rodrick teases him over and over and over and over again. Will Greg manage to get along with him? Or will a secret ruin everything?

Directors: Luke Cormican, Gino Nichele | Stars: Brady Noon, Ethan William Childress, Hunter Dillon, Erica Cerra

Votes: 1,593

Jan 21

The live action wimpy kid films are a guilty pleasure. This didn’t have any of the feel of the live action counterpart. The story was quite a bit different. The added plots would have been fine in the live action film. Some laughs but just nothing special for an animated film. 5/10

29. Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again (2022)

PG | 77 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

Nick Daley hesitates becoming a museum nightwatchman and Kahmunrah returns to conquer the world.

Directors: Matt Danner, Justin Lovell | Stars: Joshua Bassett, Jamie Demetriou, Alice Isaaz, Christie Bahna

Votes: 2,527

Jan 21

Another example where animation didn’t really do the job as well as live action. Museum exhibits coming to life in animation seems expected and uninspired. 5/10

30. The Conjuring (2013)

R | 112 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

68 Metascore

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga, Ron Livingston, Lili Taylor

Votes: 555,161 | Gross: $137.40M

Jan 21

Haunted house horror better than any other. Haunting of hill house series comes close (which I also rewatched this week). 9/10

31. Wendell & Wild (2022)

PG-13 | 105 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

69 Metascore

Two scheming demon brothers, Wendell and Wild, enlist the aid of 13-year-old Kat Elliot to summon them to the Land of the Living.

Director: Henry Selick | Stars: Lyric Ross, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Angela Bassett

Votes: 12,873

Jan 22

The character design would have been fine if not for the lines on their faces where you can see the parts connecting. The story was ok, but fails to stand out with many better stop action films out there. 6/10

32. The Conjuring 2 (2016)

R | 134 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

65 Metascore

Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Madison Wolfe, Frances O'Connor

Votes: 300,637 | Gross: $102.47M

Jan 22

Another great haunted house story. You could choose to criticizes for it being too similar to the first film but I look at that as a positive. Different enough with the entities differences. 8/10

33. Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

PG | 101 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

72 Metascore

A video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.

Director: Rich Moore | Stars: John C. Reilly, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Sarah Silverman

Votes: 458,682 | Gross: $189.42M

Jan 23

Impressive execution of a unique concept. Perfect voice casting. 8/10

34. Tár (2022)

R | 158 min | Drama, Music

93 Metascore

Set in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.

Director: Todd Field | Stars: Cate Blanchett, Noémie Merlant, Nina Hoss, Sophie Kauer

Votes: 93,888

Jan 24

A complete bore from beginning to end. Well directed but should have been cut down at least an hour shorter. Ironically it is nominated for editing. 3/10

35. Triangle of Sadness (2022)

R | 147 min | Comedy, Drama

63 Metascore

A fashion model celebrity couple join an eventful cruise for the super-rich.

Director: Ruben Östlund | Stars: Thobias Thorwid, Harris Dickinson, Charlbi Dean, Jiannis Moustos

Votes: 178,322

Jan 24

A surprising film that went many places I wouldn’t have guessed. Lots of fun throughout the bulk of the film. Started off a bit slow and I would have preferred a bit of a different ending. 8/10

36. Aftersun (II) (2022)

R | 102 min | Drama

95 Metascore

Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories real and imagined fill the gaps between as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't...

Director: Charlotte Wells | Stars: Paul Mescal, Frankie Corio, Celia Rowlson-Hall, Sally Messham

Votes: 93,846

Jan 25

Another slow moving (no moving?) film nominated this year. I can’t see any reason for the lead to have been nominated for acting. The performance was uninteresting and left me with little to no feeling for the character in any way. 3/10

37. Argentina, 1985 (2022)

R | 140 min | Biography, Crime, Drama

78 Metascore

A team of lawyers takes on the heads of Argentina's bloody military dictatorship during the 1980s in a battle against odds and a race against time.

Director: Santiago Mitre | Stars: Ricardo Darín, Gina Mastronicola, Francisco Bertín, Santiago Armas Estevarena

Votes: 31,196

Jan 26

Fairly typical courtroom drama. Well done and likely would have been more impactful for somebody familiar with the real life case. 7/10

38. Navalny (2022)

R | 99 min | Documentary, Biography

82 Metascore

Follows the man who survived an assassination attempt by poisoning with a lethal nerve agent in August 2020. During his months-long recovery he makes shocking discoveries about the attempt on his life and decides to return home.

Director: Daniel Roher | Stars: Alexei Navalny, Yulia Navalnaya, Christo Grozev, Dasha Navalnaya

Votes: 29,921

Jan 26

A surprisingly entertaining doc for the subject matter. While it is presented as completely pro-Navalny, to the viewer it is questionable what/who to trust. Questionable decisions by him yo say the least. 7/10

39. Puss in Boots (2011)

PG | 90 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

65 Metascore

An outlaw cat, his childhood egg-friend, and a seductive thief kitty set out in search for the eggs of the fabled Golden Goose to clear his name, restore his lost honor, and regain the trust of his mother and town.

Director: Chris Miller | Stars: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton

Votes: 192,442 | Gross: $149.26M

Jan 26

We really need more films with cats. All the cat scenes were the best parts of the film. I still didn’t care for most of the other characters though. Most notably humpty. 6/10

40. Fire of Love (2022)

PG | 98 min | Documentary, Biography

84 Metascore

Intrepid scientists and lovers Katia and Maurice Krafft died in a volcanic explosion doing the very thing that brought them together: unraveling the mysteries of volcanoes by capturing the most explosive imagery ever recorded.

Director: Sara Dosa | Stars: Katia Krafft, Maurice Krafft, Miranda July, Alka Balbir

Votes: 14,438

Jan 27

This doc made good use of the Kraffts beautiful footage of eruptions and the aftermath of several different eruptions. Makes me wonder if there is more footage of their last moments and wishing they’d shown more of that in this film. 7/10

41. M3GAN (2022)

PG-13 | 102 min | Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

72 Metascore

A robotics engineer at a toy company builds a life-like doll that begins to take on a life of its own.

Director: Gerard Johnstone | Stars: Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Ronny Chieng, Amie Donald

Votes: 142,644 | Gross: $93.88M

Jan 28

Exactly what you would expect from a film like this. And that is a good thing as it did very well with the premise. The doll is creepy at times but not so much that it feels like a constant threat so keeps some level of ‘reality’ to it. 7/10

42. All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)

R | 148 min | Action, Drama, War

76 Metascore

A young German soldier's terrifying experiences and distress on the western front during World War I.

Director: Edward Berger | Stars: Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Aaron Hilmer, Moritz Klaus

Jan 28

Top tier war film. One of my fave films of 2022 and one of my fav war films of all time. 9/10

Director: Colm Bairéad | Stars: Carrie Crowley, Andrew Bennett, Catherine Clinch, Michael Patric

Votes: 22,190

Jan 28

Slow moving film though it had a good enough story and an emotional last act that make up for that. 7/10

44. You People (2023)

R | 117 min | Comedy, Romance

50 Metascore

Follows a new couple and their families, who find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences.

Director: Kenya Barris | Stars: Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Votes: 62,804

Jan 28

Hard to say what they were really going for with this film. What came across was one set of parents being completely inappropriate and rude and the other parents trying really hard to be nice. The implication was that they were both in the wrong but it didn’t sell that for me even one bit. Aside from that this was funny and charming in just the way a romance film should be. 7/10

45. The Sea Beast (2022)

PG | 115 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

74 Metascore

When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters - and make history to boot.

Director: Chris Williams | Stars: Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Votes: 58,265

Jan 28

Some cute characters and an eerie similarity to How to Train Your Dragon. Not sure it really deserves the nomination it received. 6/10

46. Escape Room (I) (2019)

PG-13 | 99 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

48 Metascore

Six strangers find themselves in a maze of deadly mystery rooms and must use their wits to survive.

Director: Adam Robitel | Stars: Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Jay Ellis, Tyler Labine

Votes: 141,970 | Gross: $57.01M

Jan 29

The escape room setting and premise is perfect for a horror film. That being said this plays more like a thriller/sci-fi than horror. Still fun the 2nd time around. 7/10

47. Let the Wrong One In (2021)

100 min | Action, Comedy, Horror

A young supermarket worker discovers that his older brother is a vampire and must choose whether to help him or slay him.

Director: Conor McMahon | Stars: Karl Rice, Eoin Duffy, Anthony Head, David Pearse

Votes: 1,301

Jan 29

This could have worked as a horror comedy if it had better production. It failed to have any kind of cool feeling to it because of the low quality. Some funny moments that fail to connect quite right. 5/10

48. Escape Room: Tournament of Champions (2021)

PG-13 | 88 min | Action, Adventure, Horror

48 Metascore

Six people unwillingly find themselves locked in another series of escape rooms, slowly uncovering what they have in common to survive. Joining forces with two of the original survivors, they soon discover they've all played the game before.

Director: Adam Robitel | Stars: Taylor Russell, Logan Miller, Deborah Ann Woll, Thomas Cocquerel

Votes: 59,561 | Gross: $25.19M

Jan 29

Smart continuation of the first film. The way the group comes together would allow for any number of ‘prequels’. 7/10

49. A House Made of Splinters (2022)

87 min | Documentary

79 Metascore

Children and staff in a special kind of home: an institution for children who have been removed from their homes while awaiting court custody decisions. Staff do their best to make the time children have there safe and supportive.

The nomination for cinematography makes sense as it was noticeably well shot right from the start. It is surprising that voters went for this despite the completely bonkers scenes with the baby and some other odd stuff too. 6/10

Much like the first film I only liked the cat characters (and in this case to a certain extent the dog). There is enough fancy animation to get it the nomination but it really is not a worthy film in any other way. 6/10

The powerful performances from the whole cast is the only aspect of this film that allows the story to be told while maintaining interest. Far too slow moving even though it’s an important story to tell. The style used with the colour palette added something unique which likely has as much as the performances to do with this film winning the best pic nom. 6/10

Almost didn’t bother watching this as it’s only nominated for costume. Glad I did watch it as I liked it more than many of the best pic noms. Lesley Manville was perfectly charming in the lead role. The film was wonderfully cute with lots of humour and a surprisingly touching story considering the premise. 8/10

The style of live action backgrounds and the animated characters worked well. I know this started as a short film and realistically it probably should have stayed that way. The gimmick and the character got old long before the movie was done. 5/10

Nearly all bad movies have at least one redeeming quality. I couldn’t find one in this. The style of not showing the characters is one thing that could have been forgiven. Add to that the incoherent ’story’ and grainy film quality. A complete waste of a film. 1/10

Another entertaining entry to the series. It is a step down from the first 2 though as it comes across very cheesy. Me T and Hulk Hogan joining the cast doesn’t help keep it grounded in any way. The returning characters are still the same but just feels like they are trying too hard. 6/10

The cheese factor is too the extreme here but it is a much better film than the 3rd despite that. The advanced technology just add humour at this point. The much longer training montage in Russia with the mirroring between Drago and Rocky is a nice touch. 8/10

A step down from the previous 2 Antman films. Too much set in the quantum realm loses my interest fast. Most of the new characters were annoying in the same way many of then alien characters in Star Wars are annoying. This might be the best performance of the year. I think it deserves the nom more then Tar easily. As a film overall it could use some work though. It’s slow moving as it chose to start years after the win once the money is gone. Showing us some of her blowing the money for 20-30 mins would have made us care more about the character and the story. 6/10

Every time I watch this movie I have the same feeling that it would be so much better if it just stuck with him in the white room instead of the other storyline with the luchador.
