Norman Lear’s Cold Turkey is preferred by 4 out of 5 doctors, and the other doctor is a fool that doesn’t smoke cigarettes. Lear’s triple-threat writing, producing and directing effort is by no means a lazy comedy, with its twenty featured actors dashing around like asylum inmates for ninety minutes. It’s not the show to help one kick the habit, that’s for sure — even though it makes smoking look appropriately disgusting.

Tracey Ullman has been creating characters – and a string of successful shows, including Tracey Takes On… (HBO, 1996-99) and Tracey Ullman's State of the Union (Showtime, 2008-10) – for decades. But it was only recently that she's really embraced impersonating celebrities and politicians. For the second season of Tracey Ullman's Show, which originally aired on the BBC and is now available on HBO, she's back with her impressions of a rascally Dame Judi Dench (and her frenemy Dame Maggie Smith), a sexy singing Angela Merkel, and a version of Jerry Hall that will make you squirm.

Rebel Without A Cause (1955)
Director: Nicholas Ray
Screenplay: Stewart Stern; adapted by Irving Shulman, from a story by Nicholas Ray
When I was 12-years old, I don’t know exactly what it was that possessed me to do so, but I sat down one night and watched ‘Rebel Without a Cause.’ I was into old-time 50s nostalgia, such as ‘Grease,’ and ‘Happy Days,’ and decided to see this movie and the James Dean persona/image that influenced many of that decade. Yet, what I found was something else that day. the realization that a film could reveal hidden messages, meanings, and metaphors that aren’t just what the film is about. I remember it distinctly, Jim Backus, who you...

Octavia Spencer is having a good weekend, as she hosts Saturday Night Live, opens new movie “The Shack” and stars in what will inevitably be the highest domestic grossing Oscar contender, “Hidden Figures” (20th Century Fox).
Even though the Best Picture nominee won nothing, it nonetheless kept soaring at the box office this post-Oscar weekend, as it has for weeks, with the best gross among the top contenders. Adding $3.8 million for a current $159 million total, the movie is now certain to wind up the top grosser of the bunch.
“Hidden Figures” dropped 34 per cent, compared to 37 per cent for “La La Land,” despite its six wins including Actress and Director. “La La Land” added another $3 million, and should eke out about $160 million domestic for its total runs, and more than double that worldwide. That should salve Lionsgate’s disappointment over its dramatic Best Picture loss.

The lagging 2017 box office got a big boost as “Logan” (20th Century Fox), starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine — the first of three anticipated March juggernauts — opened like a summer franchise blockbuster. The offshoot from the “Wolverine” subset of X-Men movies marks the first R-rating for the storied franchise.
Even better, it wasn’t the only upbeat news this post-Oscars weekend. Hitchcockian thriller “Get Out” (Universal), the Blumhouse sleeper from Jordan Peele, dropped only 22 per cent on its second weekend, which is stunning.
And Lionsgate, fresh off eight wins from “La La Land” and “Hacksaw Ridge” on Oscar night, returned with the surprisingly strong faith-based “The Shack,” starring “Hidden Figures” Oscar-nominee and Saturday Night Live host Octavia Spencer.
The post-Oscar results were mixed to positive, as two of the top category winners are already available for home viewing. “Moonlight” (streaming and available on DVD/Blu-Ray) had both the widest break...

La La Land recently took home the top honors at the Cinema Audio Society Awards — but does that mean the best sound mixing Oscar is in the bag? After all, shouldn’t the folks who know make their career in sound mixing be the best ones to determine which film should ultimately go on to win at the subsequent Academy Awards? You might think so, but here’s a dive into why that’s not necessarily so.
The films nominated alongside Damien Chazelle’s modern musical in the best sound mixing category include Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. Upon first look, you might recognize that La La Land doesn’t exactly fit in with these other films, as most of them are in the war genre. Hacksaw Ridge is set during World War II,...

Not only has La La Land made history by tying the record for the most Oscar nominations ever, but it also has the honor of being the first-ever musical nominated in the best sound editing category. With breaking boundaries for the genre, Damien Chazelle’s song-and-dance masterpiece could also become the first musical to actually win the trophy in this little-known category. Let’s do a deep dive and try to figure out how the Academy will react to La La Land in regards to this specific race.
As mentioned above, La La Land is breaking new ground for musicals in the best sound editing category and is up against Arrival, Deepwater Horizon, Hacksaw Ridge, and Sully. Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which showrunner would you like to invite to Thanksgiving dinner and why?
Liz Shannon Miller (@lizlet), IndieWire
Think what you will of her shows (personally, I think Season 1 of “Scandal” is a modern classic), but Shonda Rhimes is a delight. After reading her recent book “The Year of Yes,” I’ve been semi-obsessed with Shonda’s (I feel like I can call her Shonda) wit, confidence, and positive outlook. I’d like to believe that if Shonda said yes to dinner, she’d be a lively force at the table, a help in the kitchen before and after, and damn right she’d bring some incredible wine with her to share.

Star Trek: 50 Artists 50 Years (Titan Books)
There have been a number of interesting books released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, but there’s no question that 50 Artists 50 Years is the handsomest. As the title makes clear, the premise is simple: 50 respected artists, all with wildly unique styles, were tasked with creating a work of art highlighting some element of the Trek universe. There’s plenty of original series — Glen Brogan’s jaunty representation of the bridge of the Enterprise is my personal favorite — and lots of Spock. Plus, Leonard Nimoy himself...

Musicals have always had their place in Hollywood, but they aren’t exactly hyped these days. One film, La La Land, could change that this year and — based on what critics are predicting — is poised to at least be nominated for, but potentially win, best picture at the Oscars.
Should the film — directed and written by Damien Chazelle and starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone — take home the top honors at the 89th Academy Awards on February 26, 2016, it would be joining an elite group of works as just the 11th musical to win the coveted category.
The list of musicals to have won best picture at the Oscars include: 1929’s The Broadway Melody in 1930, 1936’s The Great Ziegfeld in 1937, 1944’s Going My Way in 1945, 1951’s An American in Paris in 1952, 1958’s Gigi in 1959, 1961’s West Side Story...

Kate McKinnon’s gleefully reckless physicist is brainy comic mayhem, unlike any female character we’ve seen before. And there are more reasons to cheer. I’m “biast” (pro): love the 1984 movie
I’m “biast” (con): wary of the need to remake it
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
My reaction to the idea of an all-female Ghostbusters reboot? I am desperate for movies about women doing all sorts of things — including silly stuff like engaging in experimental particle physics, playing around with total protonic reversal, and saving New York City — but I would also like women to get their own stories and the opportunity to create their own iconic characters. I knew that even if this remake turned out to be completely amazing, any success would come with an asterisk. There would always been the “real” Ghostbusters — the original 80s movie, not to be...

How time flies when you're getting slimed. Ghostbusters turns 32 today, and the titanic influence of this nostalgia totem was obvious even before the upcoming all-female reboot prompted mass fanboy conniptions and the gnashing of Cheetos-stained teeth. To some fans, the attachment is so strong that any discussion of fandom's golden calf takes leave of basic logic. But the legacy of this 1984 juggernaut extends far beyond legions of nostalgic, anonymous misogynists on the Web. Steven Spielberg may have singlehandedly invented the modern blockbuster with Jaws, but nine years later, Ivan Reitman...

The Lonely Island's pop mockumentary Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping arrives June 3rd, and before the comedy hits theaters, Conner4Real – the fictional pop star played by Andy Samberg – has unveiled another new track, "I'm a Weirdo Freestyle."

The legend of Hugh Glass lives on.
After winning three Oscars, including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio and best director for Alejandro G. Inarritu, The Revenant proved to be one of the best movies to watch in 2016.
Viewers familiar with the movie not only discussed the performance by DiCaprio, but about the story of Hugh Glass, a fur trapper who was left for dead after a bear mauling in the 1820s.
One of the big contributors to this film will have to be historian Clay Landry, who served as a technical advisor for the film. With his help, he advised on the historical accuracy for the time period on the project. The production staff consulted on the details with him from the weapons, clothing, language and even down to the buffalo meat.
Landry has plenty of stories to tell about the production and his contribution to the project.

The Bad News Bears
Considered by some to be the best baseball movie ever, the film celebrates its 40th anniversary this month (April 7, 1976). Tina Fey and Amy Poehler is back together again as siblings in Sisters.
The comedy movie was a box office hit this past winter by earning more than $87 million and dare to open against Star Wars: The Force Awakens that weekend.
Now the movie is currently available on Digital HD and on Blu-Ray/DVD next Tuesday, March 15.
The two comediennes always have perfect chemistry by first starting to appear together in the heydays of Saturday Night Live and starring in the movies together for Mean Girls, Baby Mama and Anchorman 2.
Here’s the synopsis: When the Ellis sisters, the always-responsible Maura (Poehler) and impossibly hotheaded Kate (Fey), receive word from their retired mom and dad that their family home is on the market, they discover they have one weekend left to clean out the old junk in their bedroom. As they comb through the artifacts of their teen years,...

One of the worst things about the plethora of goofball comedies to hit theaters over the last decade, especially those that include SNL alumni, is that when something like Sisters comes along, it’s usually hard to differentiate it from the pack.
That makes it something of a surprise when it turns out to be really good, and it shouldn’t work that way.
Luckily, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have enough of a track record that most audiences are likely able to read between the lines of the less-than-stellar trailers. Or, they may just sell well enough that the trailers don’t matter.
Either way, easily one of the best comedies last year is headed home on March 15th, with a bit of an early window for the digital release, which is already available.
Here’s your chance to pick a copy for yourself. Just enter to win via the box below.

I have never laughed harder than I did on the night of June 2, 1984, and I doubt I ever will. I don't recall exactly how it happened in those pre-internet days, but in the previous couple of years I had stumbled upon some tapes of the comedy team Bob and Ray. What I am sure of is that I'd never heard anything like them: Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding were so deadpan that you weren't even quite sure that they were joking. There was no straight-man-and-punch-line-guy split; they were both playing it dead straight, a couple of guys in suits. Often, the sketches involved one interviewing the other — Wally Ballou, Bob's dopey-journalist character, appeared regularly, always missing his entry cue by a half-second — and most often the subject of the interview would turn out to be spectacularly clueless. Once in a while, a character would have a...

When one looks at the underground cult film scene of the 1960s and 1970s, the names Mike Kuchar and George Kuchar definitely come to mind. Twin-brothers who have spent the majority of their lives making short films, Mike and George utilized over-the-top titles and experimental storylines, all of the home movie variety shot on a rather “stylized” no-budget that Ed Wood would’ve been jealous of. Mike Kuchar’s work seemed to be inspired by pop genre films with a dash or two of wild fantasy: his best known film (well, best known in regards to the underground) is Sins of the Fleshapoids (1965), a trippy sci-fi/fantasy whatsit, all shot in color 16mm inside various rooms with limited art direction, utilizing dubbed-in narration and on-screen dialogue represented by optical cartoon-like speech-bubbles, and cribbing some music cues of Bernard Herrmann’s...

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...
