Legendary entertainer Dick Van Dyke was as surprised as anybody when he arrived to record the CBS special “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic.” For our recent webchat he reveals, “I hadn’t seen anything until I got there, and they had built the old living room from the show. Behind us was the set from “Chim Chim Cher-ee” from “Mary Poppins.”
CBS had assembled an all-star musical tribute for the Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner’s to celebrate his 98th birthday last December. Van Dyke and viewers enjoyed big productions featuring songs from “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Mary Poppins, “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and “Bye Bye Birdie.” Performers included Jason Alexander, Zachary Levi, Skylar Astin, Amanda Kloots, Amber Riley, Rita Ora, Beth Behrs, Tichina Arnold, Jojo Siwa, Weird Al Yankovic and Rufus Wainwright. From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

"Teen Titans Go!" is a bit of a controversial cartoon among fans, as it is a much more comedic, kid-friendly version of the 2003 "Teen Titans" cartoon (which was darker and more anime-inspired). Some fans see "Teen Titans Go!" as representative of the uber-commercialization of art, a cash-grab of a show with none of the heart of the original. Of course, to think that would be to ignore one of the most subversive, hilarious, and most of all, bizarre superhero animated shows to date.
Then there's the movie, which gave us some of the best moments in a DC film (like Robin enthusiastically pushing Thomas and Martha Wayne into Crime Alley so Batman can exist), but also the TV show itself which stands alongside "Regular Show" and "Flapjack" as often breaking Cartoon Network's "no weird" rule. There are episodes where Robin teaches the Titans about equity, pyramid schemes, and even the IRS.

Ya know that feeling when you watch something dumb, and even though you know it’s stupid, you can’t help but laugh and enjoy yourself? The 1980s are full of comedies like that. Yeah, we know they’re dumb and not especially clever, but whatever, man, every now and then, you’re in a bad mood, and you want to turn your brain off. That’s why they made seven Police Academy movies. No one thought they were good, but we watched them anyway because they were stupid in a pleasing way.
This brings me to this rare comedy-focused episode of The Best Movie You Never Saw, about a movie I loved as a kid that doesn’t super hold up forty years later, but it is still kinda fun – Johnny Dangerously. This means something…This is important. That’s right, a beloved favorite of decades past is coming to 4K – no, not Close Encounters of the Third Kind but Weird Al’s Uhf, the cult staple that marked Yankovic’s first major big screen appearance and writing credit. And to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Uhf, Shout! Factory has put together one of the most fun releases in recent memory. So grab your mop and head on over to Uncle Nutzy’s Clubhouse!
This Uhf 4K comes with two 18” x 24” posters (one for the original artwork and another with an exclusive design); a retro prism sticker modeled after vending machine stickers of the ‘80s and ‘90s; a Spatula City fridge magnet; a stress relief toy modeled after an old school remote; and a Smell-o-Vision sticker set, with scents timed to match with sizzling burgers, Stanley’s mop and, yes, the Wheel of Fish.

Do you like the Stonecutters song? How about "See My Vest"? Were you impressed when Bart Simpson and Michael Jackson sang a birthday song to Lisa? How do you feel about the celebrity-laced barn-burner "We're Sending Out Love Down the Well"? Do you like the stage musicals of "Checking In," or "Stop the Planet of the Apes! I Want to Get Off!"? I'm personally fond of the song about Spirngfield's brothel, "Spring in Springfield," a throwback to bawdy farces of the 1930s. And who could forget when Lyle Lanley led the entire town in a musical number about a monorail? Or when Homer, Apu, Seymour Skinner, and Barney formed a barbershop quartet to perform "Baby on Board"?
Point being "The Simpsons" has featured many, many original songs in its 850-year tenure on television, and that doesn't even count the hit record "The Simpsons Sing the Blues" from 1990. Many of the...

Conan O’Brien’s tenure in late night may be over, but make no mistake: Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is still going strong.
The fan-favorite Robert Smigel puppet from Late Night with Conan O’Brien has been forging ahead with solo projects for years — including a sitcom with Jack McBrayer, appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and most recently, a performance taped in January live at the San Francisco Sketchfest.
The live show brought back Triumph’s 2020 quiz show podcast Let’s Make a Poop with Triumph roasting a panel of celebs and leading them through a game of “Poopardy!”.
The full show dropped on YouTube this week. O’Brien has already boosted the special for his hound friend via Twitter/X, and there’s a lot to love here.

Robert Smigel’s Triumph the Insult Comic Dog somehow found a way to add another goofy layer to “Weird Al” Yankovic’s iconic shtick. Yankovic was one of Triumph’s guests at his recent “Let’s Make a Poop!” live shows at Sf Sketchfest (now available to watch in full online), and to honor the pop parody king, Triumph asked if he could perform some of his favorite Weird Al spoofs — only he delivered some hilariously dumb, half-baked ones Yankovic definitely never wrote (though there was something about them that...

Peter Farrelly’s Ricky Stanicky concerns a trio of best friends who create an imaginary person to blame for their misdeeds. As the years go by, Dean (Zac Efron), Jt (Andrew Santino), and Wes (Jermaine Fowler) continue using “Ricky” as an excuse any time they want to skip, say, a family gathering or sneak out on a boys’ weekend. In such moments, they simply tell their significant others that Ricky really needs them right now.
That’s a solid enough setup for a film, a kind of coming-of-middle-age comedy in the vein of Jeff Tomsic’s Tag, where the characters’ commitment to a childhood tradition ends up jeopardizing their adult lives in the process. But where the antics of Tag’s characters effectively captured the stupid joy of acting like your younger self while hanging out with your oldest friends, Ricky Stanicky is stupid in a much less joyful way.

It was announced all the way back in 2022 that Paramount was going to be remaking "Naked Gun" with Liam Neeson as the star. There was little movement on the project in terms of additional cast members or a projected release window throughout all of 2023, leading many to believe the film had been scrapped or entered a new circle of Hollywood production hell. While many view the "Naked Gun" films as sacred comedy texts that dare not be remade, it's happening, and there's a pretty incredible team behind it. The "Naked Gun" films famously changed the trajectory of star Leslie Nielsen's career, so perhaps the new film could do the same for the gruff, action antics of Neeson. We're still quite a ways away from the release of the film, so here's everything you need to know about the upcoming remake.

The 1970's was an era of extravagant hair dos and fashion senses that will test the contrast option on your television settings! It was also the time of the Kung Fu Boom and therefore the inevitable attempt of Hong Kong studios to attempt to cash in. Long before Jackie Chan made his first crack at international stardom, we got “Slaughter in San Francisco” aka “Yellow Faced Tiger” with Wong Tao in the lead and Lo Wei at the helm. Throw in Chuck Norris as the bad guy with the incredible chest hair and you have a movie that is pure 1974, released by Eureka Entertainment in their latest addition to their collection.

Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man is heading to the big screen courtesy of Dreamworks and Universal, here are the details.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, written by Nicholas Stoller and directed by David Soren, is one of the funniest, most delightful animated films of recent years. Selena Gomez Can’t Seem to Quit Social Media
“Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.” The words of Mark Twain work surprisingly well when applied to Selena Gomez’s relationship with social media. The most followed woman on Instagram, fresh from a viral moment at the Golden Globes where she whispered something to Taylor Swift, announced to 428 million Ig followers on Jan. 9 that she’s “off social media for a while” to focus on “what really matters” (with a pic of music producer boyfriend Benny Blanco). The Muppet Babies say they’ll make our dreams come true but do they mean it? How long has it been that you’ve seen an episode of Muppet Babies? For some of us maybe since it went off the air in 1991 while the rest of us probably most recently caught it during its reruns not long after. And unless we’re talking bootlegs or VHS rips, that will probably be the last time we see the animated show. So what gives? Where are the diaper-clad versions of Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang?
According to Guy Gilchrist, who worked under Jim Henson (albeit not on Muppet Babies), the reason we will never have the show has to do with rights. If you remember, the show would frequently incorporate clips of classic movies, TV shows and more as part of the Muppets’ fantasies, putting them in the...

Every time I see Dick Van Dyke’s name in a headline lately, I fear the worst. But this week it meant a joyous celebration. In CBS’ new two-hour special “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic,” the legendary actor — who throughout his career has won multiple Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy Award — was honored on his 98th birthday for his many contributions to the arts.
The tribute, which is now streaming on Paramount+, features special performances by Jason Alexander, Rufus Wainwright, Weird Al Yankovic, Rita Ora and Amber Riley, among others. Meanwhile, the guest list is just as long and just as impressive as Van Dyke’s career. Dame Julie Andrews, Mel Brooks, Rob Reiner, Carol Burnett, Ted Danson, Stanley Tucci and Lin-Manuel Miranda are just a few of the celebs who appear during the star-studded event. And to top it all off, there’s a holiday number too.

20th Century Fox wasn’t sure what it had in Star Wars, and apparently, neither did George Lucas. The director was building up his company, Lucasfilm, and unleashed his secret weapon: Charley Lippincott. He whipped people into a previously unknown frenzy by working the fans at science fiction and comics conventions. He saw to it DelRey had the novelization out months before the film, as well as three of the six-issue comics adaptation from Roy Thomas and Howard Chaykin at Marvel. These people were lined up for day one, and the word of the month spread so fast that it endured throughout the summer of 1977.

Chicago – A long time ago (1978) in an America far far away, the one and only showing of the “Star Wars Holiday Special” took place on CBS-tv. Infamously miscast and difficult to watch, the history of the show is chronicled in a new doc “A Disturbance in the Force,” co-directed by Jeremy Coon and Steven Kozak.
Rating: 5.0/5.0
In 1977, “Star Wars” became a cultural phenomenon that single-handedly revitalized a stagnant film industry, and forever changed how films were sold, made, and marketed. On November 17th, 1978, CBS aired the two-hour “Star Wars Holiday Special” and was watched by 13 million people. It never re-aired and is considered one of the worst shows to ever be broadcast on national TV. “A Disturbance in the Force” co-directors Jeremy Coon and Steve Kozak combine celebrity insight – including Seth Green, Donny Osmond and Kevin Smith – archival/participant interviews and broadcast history perspective to understand why this show was created.

Leave it to “Weird Al” Yankovic to take a jab at Spotify itself in a video recorded for Spotify Wrapped, the streaming platform’s annual deep dive into the listening habits of each of its subscribers. As shared by fans on social media, Yankovic blasted Spotify’s meager payout model in a message thanking listeners for streaming his music.
“I just want to thank you all for your amazing support,” Yankovic said in the video. “It’s my understanding that I had over 80 million streams on Spotify this year. So, if I’m doing the math right that means I earned $12. So, enough to get myself a nice sandwich at a restaurant.”
He continued, “So, from the bottom of my heart, thanks for your support, and thanks for the sandwich.” Watch the clip below.

This isn’t about favourite actors. Those guys surf along on a wave of goodwill and personal adoration that means you’ll pretty much watch them in anything, regardless of quality. If Wes Bentley‘s your fav, for instance, you’ll have sought out Dolan’s Cadillac and Hirokin: The Last Samurai because you love the man, but you’ll be no better off for it.
This is about a different kind of actor – not your indulged favourite, but the one who’s earned your respect. When this actor’s name appears in a cast list, you sit up and pay attention because over the years, they’ve proved that they have the taste, integrity and talent to make their IMDb credits page if not a flawless, then certainly an interesting place to be. The collaborations they’re a part of and the projects they pick are worth seeking out.

Want to grab dinner with Bob Odenkirk or a Hawaiian shirt signed by Weird Al? Well, now’s your chance.
The Union Solidarity Coalition, an organization founded this year by Hollywood writers and directors, is auctioning off a host of film and TV memorabilia along with in-person hang outs with stars. The auction is designed to raise money to help production crew members whose healthcare benefits are at risk because of the work stoppage that has crippled production. The online auction opened for bids Tuesday evening and runs through Sept. 22.
Naturally, news of the auction took off online where Twitter/X users made up dream experiences of their own. Florence Pugh dishing on Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde, anyone?

For 24 years, The New Yorker has leaned on the talents of actors, writers, and others from the world of Hollywood to be a part of its annual New Yorker Festival, which will be held this year Oct. 6-8.
The ongoing Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes have thrown a wrench in many plans that have traditionally relied on Hollywood talent, but the festival will go on, New Yorker editor David Remnick tells The Hollywood Reporter. And there will still be plenty of star power.
The New Yorker, of course, is not owned by a struck company, but SAG has advised its members not to promote projects from studios that have not signed interim agreements, and the Condé Nast-owned publication has had to adapt accordingly: “We faced a challenge or two,” Remnick says.

Among his many other talents, Linklater has now proven himself to be a master of this form, delivering an uproarious film that equals and (maybe surpasses) his previous high with 2003’s “School of Rock.”
But don’t take my word for it: Just ask any one of the 1400 festival-goers who filled Venice’s Palazzo del Cinema with howls of laughter, who offered impromptu mid-film applause and adulation at several points, and who stumbled out of the film’s world premiere nearly drunk on joy. Put simply, “Hit Man” absolutely kills.
