1. The Nice Guys (2016)

R | 116 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

70 Metascore

In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star.

Director: Shane Black | Stars: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer

Votes: 374,015 | Gross: $36.26M

Nothing will top this, seriously this is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. Yes the acting was good and Jackson Healy and Holland March are two PHENOMENAL and likeable main characters but the real stars of the show are Shane Black and Anthony Bagarozzi as this is the best screenplay I've seen in a movie in YEARS, even more than great movies like 'The Hateful Eight' and 'Nightcrawler'. If this movie starred Samuel L. Jackson, I would honestly feel like I'm watching a Tarantino movie, it's certainly good enough to be one, it's up there with some of his best work. This movie is legitimately flawless. A modern masterpiece in every sense of the word. A* (5/5)

2. Zootopia (2016)

PG | 108 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

78 Metascore

In a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.

Directors: Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush | Stars: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate

Votes: 546,887 | Gross: $341.27M

I wasn't expecting anything, what i actually got was one of Disney's best in the near 80 years they've been in the game. It had a great cast of characters, clever animation and a story about overcoming prejudice which wasn't cheesey, this film is SO close to perfect A (4.9/5)

3. Moana (I) (2016)

PG | 107 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

81 Metascore

In ancient Polynesia, when a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana's island, she answers the Ocean's call to seek out Maui to set things right.

Directors: Ron Clements, John Musker, Don Hall, Chris Williams | Stars: Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison

Votes: 378,545 | Gross: $248.76M

Wow, I thought 'Zootopia' would be Disney's peak for a number of years but they nearly outdid themselves just 6 months later! What a movie this was with likeable characters (Moana possibly being my favourite Disney princess ever) beautiful animation, a touching story and quite possibly, the best soundtrack in Disney history. Even being this close to perfect and this movie making me being the happiest whilst watching a movie I've been in YEARS, I can't believe this didn't take my number 1! A (4.8/5)

4. Captain America: Civil War (2016)

PG-13 | 147 min | Action, Sci-Fi

75 Metascore

Political involvement in the Avengers' affairs causes a rift between Captain America and Iron Man.

Directors: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo | Stars: Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan

Votes: 850,797 | Gross: $408.08M

Even though I enjoyed my most anticipated movies from other years ('Iron Man 3', 'Godzilla' and 'Age of Ultron') I didn't like them as much as I wanted to. This came VERY close to meeting my ridiculous expectations. I honestly loved every second and unlike most superhero movies I was completely invested in the plot. A (4.7/5)

5. The Conjuring 2 (2016)

R | 134 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

65 Metascore

Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to North London to help a single mother raising four children alone in a house plagued by a supernatural spirit.

Director: James Wan | Stars: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Madison Wolfe, Frances O'Connor

Votes: 300,768 | Gross: $102.47M

I enjoyed the original and went into this expecting a decent horror movie that was slightly less good than the original. What I actually got was a sequel that surpassed the original in every way, I enjoyed it more, I was more invested in the characters and the storyline and most importantly, it was scarier. A (4.5/5)

6. Me Before You (2016)

PG-13 | 110 min | Drama, Romance

51 Metascore

A girl in a small town forms an unlikely bond with a recently-paralyzed man she's taking care of.

Director: Thea Sharrock | Stars: Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin, Janet McTeer, Charles Dance

Votes: 287,486 | Gross: $56.25M

I'm not a romcom person at all, but this was genuinely stunning. The characters were incredible thanks to brilliant acting. The genuine plot and the relationship between Lou and Will was moving, I was completely locked in from start to finish and even though I had a feeling what would happen, the ending did make me cry. A (4.5/5)

7. Split (IX) (2016)

PG-13 | 117 min | Horror, Thriller

63 Metascore

Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan | Stars: James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, Haley Lu Richardson, Jessica Sula

Votes: 554,962 | Gross: $138.29M

Wow. This was very good! I really did enjoy the supporting cast's performances in this, I thought Anya Taylor-Joy was very good as Casey and Betty Buckley as the psychiatrist, and the plot of the film where - despite only having one kidnapper, the girls are essentially held captive by 23 people - was very creative. Of course though, the real star of the show is James McAvoy. He absolutely knocked it out of the park as Kevin and his 23 personalities, really showcasing an incredible range. The only gripe I had with the film was its realistic tone (which personally, I really love) was dampened in the third act when Kevin's 24th personality is uncovered (which I won't spoil). Otherwise, this was a great film and one of Shyamalan's best in my opinion. A (4.5/5)

8. Deadpool (2016)

R | 108 min | Action, Comedy

65 Metascore

A wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.

Director: Tim Miller | Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Ed Skrein

Votes: 1,126,838 | Gross: $363.07M

I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did, I honestly couldn't find a flaw with this movie (until I rewatched it and realised it isn't as good the second time round). It did everything it was meant to do and it did it excellently. This was just the second movie I saw in 2016, and walking out of that cinema, I thought nothing could top it! A- (4.4/5)

9. The Jungle Book (2016)

PG | 106 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

77 Metascore

After a threat from the tiger Shere Khan forces him to flee the jungle, a man-cub named Mowgli embarks on a journey of self discovery with the help of panther Bagheera and free-spirited bear Baloo.

Director: Jon Favreau | Stars: Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba

Votes: 292,226 | Gross: $364.00M

What a surprise this was. I was expecting a cheese-fest but I adored it. The kid playing Mowgoli was excellent and all the characters in the movie were just as good as they were in the animated disney version with Shere Khan still being my favourite and it was very entertaining! A- (4.3/5)

10. Finding Dory (2016)

PG | 97 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

77 Metascore

Friendly but forgetful blue tang Dory begins a search for her long-lost parents and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.

Directors: Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane | Stars: Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks, Ed O'Neill, Kaitlin Olson

Votes: 303,768 | Gross: $486.30M

Pixar have done it again with this heartfelt animation. Yes, it's not as good as 'Finding Nemo' but it's still well above average with impeccable animation, a sweet story about Dory looking for her parents, an incredible cast of characters (both old and new) and being very entertaining (especially for me as 'Finding Nemo' was the first film I ever saw in the cinema when I was just 3 years old) A- (4.1/5)

11. Hardcore Henry (2015)

R | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

Henry is resurrected from death with no memory, and he must save his wife from a telekinetic warlord with a plan to bio-engineer soldiers.

Director: Ilya Naishuller | Stars: Sharlto Copley, Tim Roth, Haley Bennett, Danila Kozlovskiy

Votes: 101,971 | Gross: $9.25M

Easily the most entertaining movie of the year, I had a great time and I like the idea of it all being in first person. This would be higher if Henry had more depth (I know he had to be a cyborg in order to make the movie work as if he wasn't he'd be dead pretty early on in the movie) but he did feel like a weak main character, otherwise, it was great. A- (4.1/5)

12. Bo Burnham: Make Happy (2016 TV Special)

TV-MA | 60 min | Comedy, Music

Bo Burnham tackles life, death, sexuality, hypocrisy, mental illness and Pringles cans in his dazzling new stand-up special.

Directors: Bo Burnham, Christopher Storer | Star: Bo Burnham

Votes: 16,466

I don't care what you think, I'm counting this because I can, without the Kanye part dragging on for an eighth of it's run time, this would be easily in the top 5, I loved it. A- (4.1/5)

13. Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)

PG | 95 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

66 Metascore

Continuing his "legendary adventures of awesomeness", Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to home.

Directors: Alessandro Carloni, Jennifer Yuh Nelson | Stars: Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie

Votes: 189,653 | Gross: $143.53M

A Very enjoyable animation courtesy of Dreamworks. The animation was fantastic, as to be expected from Dreamworks and I liked the story of Po becoming the dragon warrior. I liked that the movie focused a lot on the relationship between Po and his father but I wish that the reoccurring characters (outside of Po and Crane) had more screen time. A- (4/5)

14. Lights Out (II) (2016)

PG-13 | 81 min | Horror, Mystery

58 Metascore

Rebecca must unlock the terror behind her little brother's experiences that once tested her sanity, bringing her face to face with a supernatural spirit attached to their mother.

Director: David F. Sandberg | Stars: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Maria Bello, Billy Burke

Votes: 142,455 | Gross: $67.27M

I like the concept of the film and it's executed pretty well. Whilst this film isn't pushing any boundaries in terms of a new peak for the genre but it's a breath of fresh air as the scares aren't all false jump-scares and build tension nicely and I liked characters like Rebecca and Martin. The performances are also pretty good by the horror genre standards, especially Gabriel Bateman as Martin. It's also very entertaining B (3.8/5)

15. Deepwater Horizon (2016)

PG-13 | 107 min | Action, Drama, History

68 Metascore

A dramatization of the disaster in April 2010, when the offshore drilling rig called the Deepwater Horizon exploded, resulting in the worst oil spill in American history.

Director: Peter Berg | Stars: Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Douglas M. Griffin, James DuMont

Votes: 182,673 | Gross: $61.43M

This is a good, fun disaster movie with a solid cast and an enthralling story. All in all, this is a good film with elements of greatness like the visual effects and the direction. It's also a very fun film B (3.8/5)

16. Star Trek Beyond (2016)

PG-13 | 122 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

68 Metascore

The crew of the USS Enterprise explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a new ruthless enemy, who puts them, and everything the Federation stands for, to the test.

Director: Justin Lin | Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana

Votes: 258,633 | Gross: $158.85M

Enjoyable Sci-Fi flick, but I do think it's the weakest film in the reboot so far as I did feel less invested in the story this time round but with great characters (Scotty and Spock being my favourites) good action directed by Justin Lin and of course, being entertaining, it's still a good movie overall B (3.8/5)

17. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

PG-13 | 133 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

65 Metascore

In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.

Director: Gareth Edwards | Stars: Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen

Votes: 687,134 | Gross: $532.18M

I don't see where all the praise is coming from. Yes the film is well directed, yes Felicity Jones is great as Jin and the story is good and connects the prequels and the originals well, but this film did bore me at times and the only new character I care about is K-2S0. Not as bad as the prequels but it doesn't hold a candle to the originals or even 'The Force Awakens' B- (3.5/5)

18. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)

R | 92 min | Comedy

58 Metascore

When their new next-door neighbors turn out to be a sorority even more debaucherous than the fraternity that lived there before, Mac and Kelly team with their former enemy, Teddy, to bring the girls down.

Director: Nicholas Stoller | Stars: Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Chloë Grace Moretz

Votes: 130,240 | Gross: $55.46M

I liked the first movie a lot, but after 'Zoolander 2', I had no idea what to expect. Thankfully, this is one of the better comedy sequels I've seen as it's nearly as good as the original with the returning characters (Teddy in particular) getting better. B- (3.5/5)

19. Doctor Strange (2016)

PG-13 | 115 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

72 Metascore

While on a journey of physical and spiritual healing, a brilliant neurosurgeon is drawn into the world of the mystic arts.

Director: Scott Derrickson | Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong

Votes: 805,629 | Gross: $232.64M

To be honest, if anything I felt like this got TOO much credit. Don't get me wrong, it was still a decent watch and I'm looking forward to seeing how they integrate Strange into the MCU, mainly due to how good Benedict Cumberbatch is as Stephen Strange. The first act drags quite a lot, until Ancient One comes in and some of the jokes do fall a little flat. Certainly not bad, but not one of my highlights in the MCU (it's no 'Winter Soldier' or 'Guardians of the Galaxy') C+ (3.4/5)

20. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016)

R | 87 min | Comedy, Drama, Music

68 Metascore

When it becomes clear that his solo album is a failure, a former boy band member does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status.

Directors: Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone | Stars: Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer, Sarah Silverman

Votes: 68,486 | Gross: $9.39M

I had no idea what to expect here, but it looks like Andy Samberg still has potential as all around this was a pretty good movie. It had it's fair share of laughs and Connor was actually a pretty good lead character who I cared about. C+ (3.4/5)

21. X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

PG-13 | 144 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

52 Metascore

In the 1980s the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive through bringing destruction to the world.

Director: Bryan Singer | Stars: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult

Votes: 461,436 | Gross: $155.44M

I was sceptical about this as we had two generations of actors in this movie, and it was entertaining but it was very flawed. For example, this may seem like a nitpick but Wolverine being in Stryker's possession contradicts the ending of Days Of Future Past and Mystique is in human form in most scenes even though she's written as this "mutant and proud" character. Also, Quicksilver's scene in the mansion was very disappointing and Apocalypse wasn't the best villain. That being said, Magneto still remains awesome (even if Fassbender fails to live up to the exceptionally high standards of Ian McKellen) and I like the new, younger cast like Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and it was entertaining C (3.25/5)

22. Warcraft (2016)

PG-13 | 123 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

32 Metascore

As an Orc horde invades the planet Azeroth using a magic portal, a few human heroes and dissenting Orcs must attempt to stop the true evil behind this war.

Director: Duncan Jones | Stars: Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Ben Foster, Dominic Cooper

Votes: 279,022 | Gross: $47.37M

Despite being far from the best movie ever made, this very enjoyable fantasy flick has restored my hope in video game movies. I'd put this up there with the original 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Silent Hill' for my favourite video game movies. Very enjoyable with a solid cast of Orc characters. The humans however...they're a different story. C (3.2/5)

23. Triple 9 (2016)

R | 115 min | Action, Crime, Drama

52 Metascore

A gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town.

Director: John Hillcoat | Stars: Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul

Votes: 77,131 | Gross: $12.63M

Whilst the action and cast were very solid in this, I can't give it a higher score because it's so predictable and it's just so similar to other heist movies and whilst the actors in the movie are very good, the actual characters themselves are bland and generic. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch this again but it's still a decent film. C (3.15/5)

24. The Brothers Grimsby (2016)

R | 83 min | Action, Adventure, Comedy

44 Metascore

A new assignment forces a top spy to team up with his football hooligan brother.

Director: Louis Leterrier | Stars: Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Strong, Rebel Wilson, Freddie Crowder

Votes: 111,395 | Gross: $6.86M

Yes, the plot was pretty lacklustre and the acting wasn't Oscar-winning but it had it's fair share of laughs (even if some were a bit disgusting like the elephant scene) and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't entertained. C- (3.1/5)

25. Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland (2016)

R | 90 min | Comedy, Sport

When the Dean of Blue Mountain State threatens to sell the Goat House, Alex throws Thad the party of his dreams in an effort to get him to buy it.

Director: Lev L. Spiro | Stars: Alan Ritchson, Darin Brooks, James Cade, Rob Ramsay

Votes: 16,738

And now, we have a movie I was expecting to be awful. This was actually pretty funny and had a cast of interesting characters. But the story and acting were a little sub-par. C- (3/5)

26. Nerve (I) (2016)

PG-13 | 96 min | Action, Adventure, Crime

58 Metascore

A high school senior finds herself immersed in an online game of truth or dare, where her every move starts to become manipulated by an anonymous community of "watchers."

Directors: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman | Stars: Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Emily Meade, Miles Heizer

Votes: 140,347 | Gross: $38.58M

I quite like this, it's got a good and unique concept, it's entertaining and a bit of fun. However, it's not without its flaws, the acting isn't great and I don't care for the characters, Vee is a boring protagonist, Ian is the cookie cutter love interest, Tommy is the typecast awkward nerdy kid, Sydney is just outright hateable and the rest basically have no personality traits to speak of. C- (3/5)

27. The Forest (I) (2016)

PG-13 | 93 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

34 Metascore

A young woman's desperate search for her twin sister brings her to a ghost-filled stretch of wilderness known as the 'Suicide Forest.'

Director: Jason Zada | Stars: Natalie Dormer, Eoin Macken, Stephanie Vogt, Osamu Tanpopo

Votes: 45,711 | Gross: $26.58M

I thought this was okay. Nothing special but nothing terrible. It's probably not as good as some films below it but I'm just shocked that it's a horror movie that had a theatrical release in early January that didn't suck (see 'The Woman in Black 2' last year) C- (3/5)

28. Sausage Party (2016)

R | 89 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

66 Metascore

A sausage strives to discover the truth about his existence.

Directors: Conrad Vernon, Greg Tiernan | Stars: Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Alistair Abell

Votes: 210,227 | Gross: $97.69M

This was a disappointment, the animation being sub-par was just one of it's flaws. It was boring at times and some of the characters like Brenda were uninteresting and a lot of the jokes fell flat. The only saving graces are it's interesting concept and some of the characters like Douche and Barry. D (2.8/5)

29. The Secret Life of Pets (2016)

PG | 86 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

61 Metascore

The quiet life of a terrier named Max is upended when his owner takes in Duke, a stray whom Max instantly dislikes.

Director: Chris Renaud | Stars: Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Lake Bell

Votes: 217,529 | Gross: $368.38M

I don't have much to say here, everything about this was just meh. Not anything bad but I'm not exactly in a rush to watch this again. D (2.8/5)

30. Green Room (2015)

R | 95 min | Crime, Drama, Horror

79 Metascore

A punk rock band is forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar.

Director: Jeremy Saulnier | Stars: Anton Yelchin, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Patrick Stewart

Votes: 139,351 | Gross: $3.22M

Although the actors here are very talented and give good performances, they don't have the best material to work with on a script level. Because of this, it makes the ain't-rights a very weak cast of lead characters as they have no depth and therefore there's no reason to care about them or their fate which loses this film some points, shame really, I wanted to like this. D (2.8/5)

31. Pee-wee's Big Holiday (2016)

TV-PG | 90 min | Comedy, Family

63 Metascore

A fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger inspires Pee-wee Herman to take his first holiday ever in this epic story of friendship and destiny.

Director: John Lee | Stars: Paul Reubens, Jordan Black, Doug Cox, Linda Porter

Votes: 9,096

OK, I didn't laugh a lot, and the acting was pretty weak outside of Pee-Wee and Joe (not to mention how those two characters are the ONLY characters who mean anything to the main plot), but Paul Reubens charisma makes up for it all and it wasn't bad. D (2.75/5)

32. Ride Along 2 (2016)

PG-13 | 102 min | Action, Comedy, Crime

32 Metascore

As his wedding day approaches, Ben heads to Miami with his soon-to-be brother-in-law James to bring down a drug dealer who's supplying the dealers of Atlanta with product.

Director: Tim Story | Stars: Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Tika Sumpter, Benjamin Bratt

Votes: 63,114 | Gross: $91.22M

I was expecting this to be awful. While it wasn't that funny, Kevin Hart's energy makes up for it D- (2.5/5)

33. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

PG-13 | 151 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

44 Metascore

Batman is manipulated by Lex Luthor to fear Superman. Superman´s existence is meanwhile dividing the world and he is framed for murder during an international crisis. The heroes clash and force the neutral Wonder Woman to reemerge.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Jesse Eisenberg

Votes: 752,747 | Gross: $330.36M

Now we have a movie that disappointed many (myself included) but was it really the worst thing ever? I thought Ben Affleck was a pretty good Batman but yeah it could of been so much better and the ending to the "big fight" is the most insulting thing in any comic book movie since making Peter Parker emo in 'Spider-Man 3'. I have absolutely zero desire to watch this again, very mediocre E (2.3/5)

34. Laid in America (2016)

Not Rated | 85 min | Comedy

Two foreign exchange high-school students are kidnapped during their quest to get laid on their last night in America and it will be the best night of their life.

Directors: Sam Milman, Peter Vass | Stars: KSI, Caspar Lee, Bobby Lee, Madison Iseman

Votes: 7,223

The love story between Jack and Kaylee is sweet, but that's the only thing on a plot level worth caring about. KSI is just being KSI as Duncan, Caspar Lee is just the awkward guy as Jack, Josh Leyva is just the generic jock dickhead as Tucker, these guys are just cookie cutter characters...The film made me laugh occasionally but that's about it. And I guess it wasn't boring... E- (2/5)

35. Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

PG | 113 min | Adventure, Family, Fantasy

34 Metascore

Alice is appointed to save her beloved Mad Hatter from deadly grief by travelling back to the past, but this means fatally harming Time himself, the noble clockwork man with the device needed to save the Hatter's family from the Red Queen.

Director: James Bobin | Stars: Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway

Votes: 122,372 | Gross: $77.04M

I had low expectations going into this movie, I wasn't a fan of the original. This had a much more interesting plot (I'm a sucker for time travel) but I didn't like the Hatter as much in this movie and I nearly fell asleep like 4 times. Very poor. Technically speaking this is better than 'Laid In America', but I'd rather watch that again. E- (2.1/5)

36. Sing (2016)

PG | 108 min | Animation, Comedy, Family

59 Metascore

In a city of humanoid animals, a hustling theater impresario's attempt to save his theater with a singing competition becomes grander than he anticipates even as its finalists find that their lives will never be the same.

Directors: Garth Jennings, Christophe Lourdelet | Stars: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson

Votes: 191,415 | Gross: $270.40M

This was the subject of a lot of acclaim and I don't really know why...I'll start with the few positives here; the singing performances were all pretty good, particularly Taron Egerton as Johnny, which I think got him the Elton John role. The main characters are mostly likeable (I mean Mike and particularly Buster are difficult to root for) but as there's so many of them, giving them all screen time makes it difficult to see any depth to any of them, and as a result, they all feel like cookie-cutter stereotypes. A big personal gripe I had here was that there is absolutely ZERO reason for any of these characters to be animals apart from a couple of gags. The main plot of the film would be completely identical if the characters were humans. Also Buster, the owner of the theatre running the contest, bares a striking resemblance to Simon Cowell, and whether or not this was intentional, made him a detestable protagonist. Even if this was satire and an "eye-opener" to how Cowell treats contestants on his shows, it doesn't work because this film STILL tries to make the audience feel sympathy for Buster. Aside from a few good vocal performances, there's near enough nothing to ride home about here, really wasn't a fan of this one. F+ (1.9/5)

37. The Purge: Election Year (2016)

R | 108 min | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

Former Police Sergeant Barnes becomes head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, a Presidential candidate targeted for death on Purge night due to her vow to eliminate the Purge.

Director: James DeMonaco | Stars: Frank Grillo, Elizabeth Mitchell, Mykelti Williamson, J.J. Soria

Votes: 110,127 | Gross: $79.21M

Nothing offensively bad for me to tear into here, but also nothing really of merit either. Weaker than 'Anarchy', but better than the original F (1.7/5)

38. The Boy (2016)

PG-13 | 97 min | Horror, Mystery, Thriller

42 Metascore

An American nanny is shocked that her new English family's boy is actually a life-sized doll. After she violates a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.

This had potential to be serviceable, nothing special but still okay. The concept is cliche but interesting but they execute it horribly and the last 10 minutes are just hilariously bad (believe me if the whole film was like that this would be 'Suicide Squad' level bad) F- (1.5/5)

I wanted to like this. Whilst the odd action scene was quite well directed this movie was genuinely more racist than 'American Sniper'! The main character is more of a psychopath than the terrorists he's hunting and the acting (apart from Aaron Eckhart) was pretty bad. Maybe with a less hate-able main character and less racism this could have been a solid action movie. As it is, it just seems like a movie that had Donald Trump in the director's chair F- (1.5/5)

This was very disappointing, I wasn't expecting 'The Shawshank Redemption', but I wanted to at least laugh more than 3 times... a bad comedy. G (1.25/5)

Wow, this has to be the most disappointing film in recent memory. Considering how all the characters had me cringing (except from Deadshot) so hard it's not even funny (especially the joker) and the script was even weaker than 'Batman v Superman', this was doomed from the start. But with a basic plot and genuinely being as entertaining as a sodding death bed with some of the weakest directed action I've ever seen in a superhero movie, this almost hits 'Fant4stic' levels of atrocity... U (0.6/5) (If I'm honest this film could've been the worst of the year without the soundtrack)

I didn't have high expectations going into this, but this was honestly painful, I only chuckled once throughout and the most entertained was when I said "Oh look, there's King Bach...he's FAR too talented to be in this." U (0.2/5)
