Best film ever. THE movie-making handbook. The default “best movie ever” that so many people say. Seems like the right answer, but this is my own opinion of it being the best ever. So innovative with its shots, angles and so forth that it’s just insane. While the plot vs story structure gets people going, it is ultimately the way it is filmed that gives it its backbone. You know that old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”? Well this happens all the time in ‘Citizen Kane.’ The acting and characters are so deep and so memorable, but let’s not forget the meaning of what the film is all about: “money doesn’t buy happiness.” It may deal with people trying to find out what “rosebud” means, but the meaning behind what “rosebud” is, is what makes this movie more timeless than most. No other movie before or since has had more brains behind filming and writing in a movie.

Old, grand epics are usually beautiful to look at, colour or not. This was the first big coloured epic, not the first coloured film in general. While it is lovely, the movie features mean, self-centred characters that feel real and that we know them. They aren’t annoying, and that’s quite the surprise. While Scarlett O’Hara is cruel, we fall for her. Rhett Butler is the ultimate cool-dude. The only real flaw I found the Ashley and Melanie getting married; they’re cousins! This romantic epic is ultimately the most entertaining flick. Nothing really life-changing about this, but has everything else that makes a flick great.

One of the coolest films is also one that features something I like: multiple stories. Not quite as grand as “Magnolia” or “Short Cuts,” but “Pulp Fiction” plays with story & plot like “Citizen Kane.” That bizarre narrative helps the viewer forget what’s about to happen next if they have seen it before; helping lack in its predictability. Quentin Tarantino has the ultimate knack for the best dialogue. Not deep, but memorable and fun while mostly still serving the story well. “Pulp Fiction” is magical. We’ve seen mafia and gangsters. We’ve seen multiple stories and strange narratives. But how often have all of them been combined to such high degrees in such a single high result? I can only count one.

A contender for the most legendary film ever done on Hollywood is iconic for very good reasons. It’s old-time romance always makes people a sucker for the love story during the war. But the story that surrounds it makes us proud to have known such people. “Round up the usual suspects.” “I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” These are some quotes we all use almost daily. And it was here where it all actually came to be. Hearing these familiar phrases in their original context makes this feel like you are hearing a favourite song. You know the words, so rock out to it! This is the most magical movie ever made. I always loved this, but out of the ten or fifteen times I’ve ever seen this, it gets better and better by the watch. There may even be a day where it surpasses “Citizen Kane.”

My third Hitchcock feature; my best Hitchcock feature. He knows how to use colours super well and this is a great example. Though not quite as gorgeous as “Vertigo,” NBTW comes close. One thing that will always make me a cinephile is that I love it when movies get me excited, hold me in their grasp, take me to a new land, and make me forget I am actually looking at a tv screen. Thrillers aren’t the only ones that do. But the main job in a thriller is to excite. NBTW jazzes up the viewer right away and takes you on a complex run of danger and identity from one end of the US to the other. Is there a more exciting movie? Some are arguable, but none are more thrilling.

8-year-old me called this the best movie ever made. This was before my knowledge vastly grew, but this final Lord of the Rings picture still makes my “top 10 ever” list. Goes to show that even though I didn’t have a big amount of film knowledge, I still knew greatness when I would see one. Nothing wrong with a movie being well made for good camera movements and positions, nor is wrong if a movie uses lots of computer effects and layers of makeup & outfits. As long as the effects do not overshadow the essence of the film. In the LOTR films, it is about creatures that try to destroy the source of evil. Sounds cheesy? Well if the writing is strong and the movie-making is high without being superficial, who cares? A feature film about a seashell was made and it was one of the most acclaimed films of that year. But LOTR is fantasy. This is about warriors, courage, and battles. The riveting intensity behind it all lingers all three hours and twenty minutes. Nothing made since 2003 has topped this. Some have come close, but this could not be topped.

The film that laid the groundwork for classics such as “Star Wars” and “Lawrence of Arabia.” Difference is while those are slightly better looking film (I don’t want to downgrade the beautiful look that this movie has), “The Searchers” actually does manage to have better filming. Shadows, canyons, colours, etc are all used in such ways to make the general filming of this to be as amazing as can be. At its surface, it is “cowboys & Indians.” Actually look more into the characters, including the Natives, and you can see tons and tons of layers. So much so that you wonder just how good the whites actually are. Some of the enemies are cut from the same cloth. Let’s single out John Wayne. Dude was the ultimate movie star. He may have won the Oscar for “True Grit,” but that was a case of them giving the right award to the right person for the wrong film. He should have won for this: a heavily layered man who is just about villainous.

Some kids aspire to be hockey players after seeing Sidney Crosby score the winning goal. Some want to be guitar players after hearing Jimi Hendrix do a shredding guitar solo. While I have always loved acting, it was ultimately Edward Norton in “American History X” that made me say: “That’s what I want to do with my life!” I don’t mean be a monstrous neo-nazi, I mean give juggernaut performances that blow people away. This is my favourite performance ever because of how it changed my life. Norton has three stages of this character where his nuances are just incredible. And as said earlier, he is a mammoth. Aside from the acting and editing, the general story of the patterns of racism is nothing short of astonishing. Even if Norton wasn’t the one that changed my life, I would still be adoring everything this hard-hitting flick had to offer.

Gotta include a foreign language film in top 10 too. It wasn’t that hard to do. Especially from my paternal family’s homeland. This is Italian neo-realism—very realistic films with non-actors. And I don’t know how DeSica was able to make such strong emotion behind everything. The movie’s main plot doesn’t take off, but we are overwhelmed once he finally gets his job. This follows a pretty simple story: a family man in poverty needs a bike for a new job but it gets stolen so he must find it. But the movie, on a deeper level, is about family and poverty. Out of pure luck, he gets a job that so many others would kill for, but it isn’t even really that good. When he goes on the quest for it, it becomes father-son time. The themes are all delicately handled. Best part about the film isn’t how real it is, but how emotionally powerful even the little scenes are. And when it takes off into higher ground later on, wow.

Gotta include a silent in the Top 10. This is also the only comedy in the top 10. As a comedy, I think there are some better and funnier. As a thriller, it is pretty high up there, but not number one. As a silent film, I think there’s no better; Chaplin, Keaton or Griffith. Is Harold Lloyd better than them in general? No, I think him making the best was pure coincidence. His other films are not as good as most other Chaplin, Keaton and Griffith works. This also happens to have the best and most influential shot in all of silent films too: Lloyd hanging from a clock. Endlessly emulated, it is always nice seeing where it all came from. Can’t help but also wonder “how did they do that?” For a movie so short, the laughs and thrills and amazement being packed together have me wowed every time I see it.
